Thanks for the tips! I don't know why but people drop the garlic cloves in whole. I did an experiment decades ago where I canned a jar of dill pickles with whole cloves and a jar with crushed garlic cloves. The same brine/vinegar solution and spices were used in both. Six months later I opened them and taste tested them. There was just a hint of garlic in the uncrushed clove jar where the crushed garlic dill pickles had a nice rich garlic flavoring to them. I've crushed my garlic ever since in every canning recipe using garlic. The difference is amazing! CRUSH YOUR GARLIC CLOVES for max garlic flavoring!

Susan Robinson I completely understand mushy pickles. That only happened to me one time then I went straight to grandma and had her teach me. This is not an approved method that is my disclaimer 😁grandma never processed her pickle in a water bath canner. I’ve been doing it the same way for 35 years and everyone is still alive lol. Search on “Our Half Acre Homestead” Mrs Volfie shows exactly how I make pickles. The only difference is I don’t turn my jars upside down. I guess grandma taught me to be a rebel canner. Think about a boiled cucumber.... yucky mushy. Paul’s jars are beautiful! 🦋💜

Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge. This is my first time canning and I have a question. Should the ring of the lid be removed? I noticed your rings are gone from the finished product.
@PaulsRuleofThumb4 жыл бұрын
Hi Vickie.. I do store my jars without rings.. 24hrs after they come out of the canner I take the rings off, check the seal, and wash the jars thoroughly in hot soapy water to remove any residue from the jars before storing them. Leaving the rings on can create a false seal and potential spoilage. Hope this helps!😊👍

Anyway, my before work canning session today (I get up early with the puppy and working 100% from home) is about 5 pounds of leftover BBQ pulled chicken. Use "Pickle Crisp" in each jar with a Bay leaf, grape leaf or tea leaves and you pickles will always be super crisp. Don't pre-boil the cucumbers. Cold pack them like Paul does and add hot brine to jars with ingredients I suggested. Good Luck!

The blossom end is what makes a soft pickle. That is the only end you should cut off. I've been making pickles for 40+ years. And your recipe is tried, and true. If you cut off the blossom end when you eat the cucumbers fresh, they will not be bitter. Just an fyi.

If you haven't tried self pollinating your cucumbers i highly reccomend it. Sometimes if there's not enough bees or pollinated species around, the plants won't produce. This usually only applies to cucumbers because they are one of those plants that can't self pollinate. Most other veggies are ok

I didn't see anyone mention it, but I may not have gone far enough down. Those are poblano peppers used mainly in Mexican dishes. They can be mild, every once in a while I'll find a hot one. They're the peppers used most often for Chili Rellenos. They look amazing. I processed 3 poblanos Tuesday. I had bought like 8 to make salsa and salsa verde and didn't use them all. so we said pickle them, we can toss them in some taco meat later.
