Mr. Julian " Cannonball" Aderly was a truly soulful jazz master. No one swings quite like this gentleman.

1959 the year we started our quintett and Cannonball Adderley still sounds as new. An amazing vitalite und a wonderful sound. A sound I still listen to with great happiness.

My favorite Cannonball album--and I've got all of his in-person Quintet and Sextet albums as well as the ones with Miles Davis and Coltrane. But this is the best of Cannonball on a single album--his giant soul, his humor, his pyrotechnics, his inexhaustible melodic language. The only other musician he's required to share his time with on this album is one of the very few musicians on his level---the great Wynton Kelly. Yet this album was never critically acclaimed or especially popular--even among jazz fans. All the more reason to treasure it. (Just one example to justify the price of the package: "Serenata" has never sounded more swinging or singing.

It is a great album indeed however ‘Something Else’ is the best jazz album ever produced not only in jazz, but also in any genre (of course that’s my opinion). What do you think of that album?

This rendering (by My Kind of Music) is as good as any I've heard on youtube--all the more reason to treasure this apparent survivor of the 2008 Universal fire that destroyed so many master editions by great artists. And a 2019 expose in the NYTimes claims the damage was greatly under-reported! Please upload this recording to a cloud or 2 asap!

The picture shows him holding a tenor saxophone, though...

@@AmiDeLaMusique Sorry, it's an alto. King Super 20 with underslung octave key. You've probably seen tenor with that key 🙂

Hmm... Wikipedia suggests there's more songs on the album than this, chiefly including "Poor Butterfly" and "I Remember You"

Why is it that so many jazz CDs speed up the original recording? Even by a micro-second it distorts the music, making it sound like something played by robotic puppets. I'll take my 60-year-old LP over this disappointing transfer.
