Randal Clark teaches a lesson on splitting altissimo notes to get that overblown, cracked, dirty, feedback, raspy, screaming, multiphonic growl sound effect out of your sax high tones.

The greatest are yet quite unsung/unheard. The world is really unfair; isn't it? Thanks for knowing Randal Clark who deserves millions - wrongfully bequeathed to others [smile] Thanks for the video, Randal, Cannonball and, of course, You Tube.

I'm a beginner and play that way a lot. My family is about to smash my horn if I keep making that infernal noise. So thanks for sharing what not to play.

@@mjeffbr Listen to the song *Let's fall in love again* by Warren hill and you will understand. Used as a machine gun splitones are noisy and meaningless but with a good use it adds to songs so much more personnality.

Also, does reed strength and type matter? I am using Legere 2.75 synthetic. btw. I started on a 2.00 cane 4 months ago. I would appreciate any info on this. Thanks

Depends on the mouthpiece your playing it on and how your chops work with this setup =) When it comes to learning stuff in the altissimo range you don't want your reed to feel too soft, so it'll give you some resistance against the urge to pinch when playing up there.

Yes I have.. Playing for a long time with your neck hunched over can cause issues with your upper spine. I have had this happen and cause numbness in my arms. Try a different neck strap designed to take the pressure off of your neck, or practice with the sax supported on a stand instead of your neck. Always try to play with your spine as upright and straight as possible.

Maestro Clark, you are a bad MoFo; your sound on your great singles reminds me of Mindi Abair's, another tremendous player. This was helpful, I've had a hard time getting the feedback into my altissimo!

This is a great video. I can the what sounds like the undertone growl, but it's more like a buzz. He doesn't mention humming at the same time. Can anybody give me some advice on that please?
@ogulkoker
@ogulkoker 8 жыл бұрын
I think what he does is not growling, but multiphonics... He says growl, because it sounds like a growl :)
@Paul41186
@Paul41186 8 жыл бұрын
1st off it's not a hum. Listen to what he says and follow his lead you'll do it in no time but you have to make sure to push a lot of air thru your horn.
@JeremyMcCant
@JeremyMcCant 5 жыл бұрын
Split tones don't necessarily come from growling, use very fast air and open your throat and thr notes will split easier. With an open throat, you can split from middle G# to middle D.
