I have Deore 1 x 11 on two of my bikes these days. I confess to installing an XT shifter, probably more for looks than real performance improvement. It's all working great. I rotate my chains to even out the wear, which should be low anyway because the cassette is all-steel. The only issue I had was a bit of skipping in the middle sprocket. Turns out I put the chain and quicklink on backwards without noticing. Swapped it around and it's all good. Cheers

Prolly a vertical wall. I have an 11-46 casette paired with a 30T front sprocket, the slowest gear is so slow that at this point it would be easier/faster to hop off the bike and carry it up those extreme inclines that require such gearing.

This will make a LOT of new bikes in 2022 a lot cheaper ..... or a lot better than the SX and Deore stuff we are getting now. And also a lot easy to upgrade the vast majority of people’s bikes ..... Thank the heavens .... well done Shimano. 11 speed is just not as fiddly than 12, much cheaper and much easier to live with ..... nice. Just sort the delivery issues out now 😬🤔

While upgrading to deore 5100, keep in mind that 5100 derailleur is made for 11-51 cassette only, and will not work good with smaller cassettes. 5120 derailleur actually works with 11-51 cassette, and if you plan to use different cassettes on the same bike, 5120 is better choice. Good advice here in this vid. Cyclists are frequently paying for more than they need. Even in cases where the price is not unfair relative to the costs of materials and technology it can be materials and technology that provide no real advantage over lower cost materials and tech. My current favorite example: spending hundreds of $ for over sized trolley wheels. The theory being the larger trolley wheel causes less chain friction when the chain links flex around. If a buyer truly believes that the larger trolley results in measurably less friction when the lightly tension chain articulates around then why would you be OK with your highly loaded chain wrapping around a 10 tooth cassette cog? In a lot of cases the chain isn’t even able to seat correctly on the 10 tooth cassette cog. Get a drive train with a cassette that starts at 11 or 12 teeth before throwing money at large trolley wheels.

Totally agree, this is what I was commenting with a friend recently, and it is also very budget friendly for people who already had 1x11 before and want to get more range. I previously had an SLX M7000 1x11 with a 30T chainring at front and 11-46 on the back. When this got released got myself a new SLX 12 speed rear derailleur and 11 speed 11-51 Deore cassette. As far as I know the chain is the same in both old SLX and new Deore 11 speed, the SLX rear mech has technically the same range and "unsurprisingly" the SLX 11 speed shifter worked really well with the 11 speed Deore cassette. For around $100 I upgraded to have more range even comparable with some 12 speed drivetrains out there, I could move to 32T on the front and I am even considering moving to a 34T just like you say, because of that 51T sprocket, it is very friendly for climbing.

@@thedownunderverse that's right :) indexing works perfectly. I am running an SLX 11 Speed drivetrain with a new Deore 11-51 11 speed cassette and an SLX 12 Speed rear mech, you can see how it works here kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpS7c3eLbJd8hrc. The only "downside" you can't even see in the video with the bike mounted on a stand is some gear in the middle (I think it's the 5th or 6th) require slightly higher cadence in order to downshift properly indexed and that's probably because I am running a non boost crankset on a boost frame, because I had I full sus (non boost), had a crash and had to replace the frame, so I swapped my parts into the new frame and as a result, the chainline is slightly out of place. Even so it still works pretty much fine as you can see.

I have used the M5100 groupset (minus the cranks and chainring) which I got for £120 on Ebay for over a year. It has served me well but the cassette has developed a fault I noticed recently. Where the the largest 3 sprockets join to the spider, the rivets have come loose allowing the 3 large sprockets to slide around a bit, as if the rivets have lost their tension or deformed (most likely the former). I have done some steep climbs occasionally but the cassette hasn't seen a a large amount of use (still on my first chain) and I don't think I'm super hard on the bike, it's a standard bike not an E-bike. It's also on the heavy side which is to be expected from a budget steel cassette and I thought it would last a while but sadly not, maybe I got unlucky. The low gears make a noticable clicking noise and are probably robbing some power on the climbs so it is a good time to upgrade to a lighter cassette. The rest of the groupset hasn't caused any problems except when I bent the deraillieur, although that was more to do with the fact I was trying to put a chain back on in the middle of a dark raining field when I was drunk lol (my dad has gotten me into bad ways). It was easy enough to bend it back though.

Mr. SickBiker that was a very informative video, and I thank you for showing it. It changed my mind to stay with my 11sp, but upgrade just my cassette to the 11-51 and the required Deore RD-5100 SGS derailleur. I do have one question if you have time to answer. With my XT 11-46 set up, I was using a SRAM PCX1 chain with a SunRace cassette. Which chain do you recommend so I may get the best shifting possible or which did you use? Thank you again

WARNING: that deore 11v cassette has a big problem: rivets on the bigger cogs get loose after a few uses (I've seen in three bikes), this is so sad because shifting is very smooth and despite some haters opinions Gear ratio is the best available, almost no weird feel on the legs. Do not buy, it will fail.

@@hansonwang2121 There's two versions (both 12 speed and 39-45-51 cogs as shimano): CSMZ601 630g and CSMZ903 587g. Shimano claims that with its propietary shifting points is more crisp and problem free, my experience with Sunrace is good but not as smooth as shimano (and no chain drop on backpedalling). Now I'm using Sunshine Ultralight 11-50. I will try that Sunrace

This is accurate on 2 of my mates bikes. How you can tell is by moving the larger cogs once you have torqued up the cassette. If it moves, well you're screwed. This issue is pretty common in my opinion. (Talking about M5100 11 speed 11-51T cassettes...)

Yes you can. If your bike also has a square tapered bb I'd recommend going for the bb52 68-73mm bottom bracket. This will let you use the supplied spacers to tinker with the chain line a little. I just installed this groupset last night, waiting for the chain arriving today like a kid at Xmas. If I run into any issues I'll pop back with an edit after a test ride over the weekend but all the research I've done indicates it should work fine 🤞

I want to ask how this 1x11 transmission behaves when driving on a normal road? I have never used this option before. I have a Nishiki Bigfoot K29 bike, with a Shimano Deore/Altus system, 27. The number of sprockets of the system is 3, the number of teeth is 44-32-22. Cassette: Shimano HG-20, 11-34T, 9 stars. It's hard for me to imagine how the bike will behave when moving at a normal speed of 20 - 25 km per hour.

I’m running on a 12 speed cassette 10-51 and in the front I have a 34 teeth and on the flat section I find my self in the 11’th speed (12 teeth). For the ones that are going to tell me to get a bigger chainring, well I can’t, my frame can’t take a 36 teeth chainring. So for me the 12 speed Shimano system is perfect.

@@TitoJoebs I have a one piece cassette for garbaruk mounted on a sram xd freehub. I like more the sram xd freehub over the micro spline because when you are in the lower gears (10, 11, 12) the power is better distributed throw the cassette. Contrariwise when you have the last sprockets separated from the cassette and your sprinting you put lots of power on a smaller portion of the freehub and the wear is bigger. After to years I changed a freehub dew to wear. Thank you for your recommendation.
