Here's why I wouldn't buy Reynolds wheels unless they improve freehubs...

My Reynolds rear wheel needed bearings replacement after 5 months of use.😅. Previous two bikes were on DT Swiss with no problem for 4 years each.

That was a nice opportunity to change the bearings with some ceramic ones (if you had the time to wait for a delivery). As soon as I hear something bad withy DT swiss, I'll order some smooth ceramic bearings for it.

I would never buy any other wheels, and hubs other than DT Swiss. Zero problems, lasting forever in any conditions! Also SwissSide are of the same top quality.

If you don't mind something out of the ordinary, try k-o-m from England. They have a super cool bearing+axle+freehub design. I think it is one of the first serious innovations in hubs since free hubs were invented.

I had to buy gurpil wheels for my old 26er cause nobody has decent 26" wheels in the netherlands. And so far it works (had to loosen the bearing thingy on the rear cause it couldn't spin normally..) But compared to the old days...even a 17mm double walled rim from maddux is already strong enough for most things. Now running 24mm wheels cause I wanted to ride 2.25" tyres without issues. DT Swiss however will stay at the top of my picking list when I'm upgrading to 27.5 or 29.

The pawl designs usually allow flex and if you push hard on pedaling you wear it out fast. I worry, just built a wheel with sun/ringle hub (same hub basically). My backup hub is a Shimano XT with 9000 km on it and working nice :) The previous hub to the XT was a Novatec Hub, it lasted 12km and cracked in 5 places. I also have DT swiss, they are very easy tech. My friend has Reynolds, i tell him DT swiss is better.

What do you use to lubricate the pawl and ratchet?

Good Luck with the race. I would immediately replace that axle if I was you. That looked really chewed up!
