Love your channel. So much information and common sense. I have been a cyclist / motorcyclist for over 50 years, racing and owning bike shops. You have shown so many small details that only time and am inquisitive mind can teach. Can only highly recommend every video to those beginners watching. This man knows his stuff, and also knows that spending money on gear doesn't make a good cyclist.

I was having problems with my spokes so I bought a new rim. Then I blew 4 tubes, one a ride, and all leaks on the inside rim side. I am sure this is the problem so I will check for my ride tomorrow. Thank you very much. Update 2 months later: That was exactly the issue, I put some tape over it and no more punctures. Had a comfortable 97km race with no issues, and 2 months later still on the same tube. Thank you so much.

I’ve asked so many so called experts why I kept getting flats and never got a solution. This is excellent advice and I will be checking the tape, the valves and the hole for any problems from now on. Thank you!!!

I'm replacing two tubes right now that have stem cuts on the valve from the rim. I was leaning on both the rim holes being to sharp and there being too much air pressure in the tire. I was filling the tire within its limits. I thought of making the valve hole just a bit bigger and filing the edges, just to relieve the pressure against the stem. The issue that I see with this is that the tube is always going to be moving within the tire as that is the reason it was cut in the first place. I like the idea of the electrical tape placed on the inside of the rim and folded over to the outside. Great video. In-depth analysis.
@JayB-lz6yd4 жыл бұрын
after having filed the hole, you can put a piece of electrical tape over the hole (about 2 or 3 inches long) and punch the valve through the tape. the tape will cover the edges and junction. it smoothens the line. easy to do and give a lil supplement in protection.

Great tips. The sharp edges of the valve hole on the rim is exactly what was cutting into the base of the tube's valve stem on my bike. Great tip and a black mark on the manufacturer for boring the hole without smoothing the edges. Wake up bike makers!

I just got a flat this morning in the weirdest way. My bike was (and still is) sitting here in my room, and I was watching a video here on KZbin when all of a sudden I hear hissing coming from my right side. It was my rear wheel. The tube failed somehow and was losing air. I take off the tire to inspect my tube and the hole is on the rim side, right where a spoke hole is. Thing is, when I put pressure on the spoke hole, I don't feel the nipple, and there are no tears in the tape at the hole either. The tear in the tube is about 3 - 4 mm long, and it doesn't look like a puncture, more like a tear. Is this how bad tubes fail and I could just have bought a bad tube, or did the nipple still somehow puncture my tube? My rim tape was free of sharp debris also.

Thank you for showing what the "professional" shop did with my $63 US dollars 2.0 x 26 Schwable Marathon Plus mountain bike tire. They pumped it up to extremely high pressure and the Presta valve at the base separated from the tube. Also now they put another tube in with an extremely long valve stem and did not use the nut that threads down the stem to hold it tight to the rim. I was told the long valve stem is okay but that it is a tube for a fat tire bike and not my 2.0 kind of tire. I let a lot of air out again to bring it down to about 60 pounds and another shop I'll be going to from now on gave me a valve stem nut. Now when I ride on very smooth new asphalt I feel a rhythmic lump and wonder what other damage that shop did when they inflated my $63 tire so high, either that or it's the fat time tube they put in my 2.0 tire, could that be it? If it is, could my tire go flat again because of a fat tire tube inside a 2.0 tire? I didn't complain but I know I won't go back to that shop again.

@333Orobas 666 Hi! Thanks very much for your cogent input! Since my comment my $313 worth of what were supposed to be very strong great wheels have failed! The rear wheel started breaking spokes and mechanic said it was too far out of alignment, so I had a Cliffhanger rear wheel with 36 hole double butted spokes and now 3 months later remains in perfect alignment, however it cost me $220, and then six days ago it was 95 degrees and I was riding very slow on good sidewalk and my front tire blew and sounded like a shotgun! My front rim split for 22 1/2 inches and 1/4 inch wide strip of my rim! I just had a new flat proof tube put in by a shop around 3 weeks ago, the kind of tube with the green goo in it. The tube split open for almost the same, 22 inches. The cost will be the same to build my front wheel at $240 with again Cliffhanger 36 spoke wheel. I thought a front wheel would be less to build but I guess not. I'll never buy used wheels again, the school of hard knocks! What do you think of the prices I paid? I don't own a car and commute by bike and exercise by bike and weigh 280lbs. I'm paying dearly but I really need reliability. Any input would be appreciated from you or anyone. Carpe Diem!

I do not use schwalbe tyres anymore. The are so wobbely, that you are not able to install then evenly. Most of them. I also do not use water. Instead I prefer talkum powder. The tube will not stick to the tyre and stretch, if not set right. For latex innertubes it is a must. Nice video btw 😅👍

My valve tears after 6 months nevertheless. Something about riding it makes the tube move while the valve stem is screwed in one place. It puts a natural pressure on the edge of the stem where the tube attaches and only in one direction, the forward direction it is constantly moving in. . It is bound to happen. The way to prevent it IMO is to let the air out every month and re-seat the tube in the right spot.

Instead of using water use talcum powder. That is what bike pros have been using for decades.
@myscreen2urs2 жыл бұрын
The talcum powder is for reducing the chance of getting the tube sticking to the tire which can cause flats in certain circumstances. It also helps with tube installation. The water method he was showing is more specific to getting an even beading of the tire.
