There's been a thing going around Twitter where people are sharing their unpopular opinions about video games. Rather than confine myself to 140 characters, I thought I'd share 10 of them here. Get your torches and pitchforks ready!
Music included in this video is from: Ori and the Blind Forest, The Secret of Monkey Island, Quest for Glory 4, World of Warcraft and The Witcher.

I agree with you 100% on enjoying shorter games. As I get older and time is at more of a premium - divided between work, upkeeping my house, and spending time with my spouse - I find that I like playing and completing those shorter games more than games I could potentially never finish.

Also many games are filled with with boring / unnecessary sections to straighten the game length... never was a fan of this. I tend to stop playing during the game and never continue.

Can we reach a middle ground and agree that JRPGs are their own genre and still descendants of the classic Dungeons and Dragons? There’s still leveling up, collecting loot, exploring dungeons, killing monsters and often saving the Princess, or prince in some games.

Let's Plays are a curious beast. About the only ones I keep up with are the players on the Hermitcraft Minecraft server. I think what keeps me coming back to them is that the dynamics between the players are interesting, and those people are so much more creative than me that it's interesting seeing their creative process at work in nice edited clips as you watch them build the world around them. Re long games, I think a distinction should be made between open ended games vs just tedious fetch quest filled games. Games like Factorio, Minecraft, city sims, Dwarf Fortress, Rimworld, etc are ones where I feel no regrets when I see the 3 or even 4 figure hour counts. Finally, holy shit what a wave of nostalgic awesomeness when the Witcher music started playing! The first one was definitely the best. I always enjoy watching your vids. Thanks!

@@txa1265 As far as I remember it had three flaws compared to Origins. Location recycling that was a bit too frequent, fewer combat options to setup companion 'AI profiles' as well as you could in the first game and very limited variety in gear for you and companions. But the core story, characters and aesthetic improvements over Origins made it reach just about the same level for me.

I like both short and long games but I think its harder to make a good long game than a good short game. Producing quality content in general is a difficult creative task, so coming up with 40 hours of content is necessarily harder than coming up with 10-15 hours of content. This might lead to a higher number of shorter games seeming better, but that's also because more of them can be made. I'd be interested to know if you think proportionally whether shorter or longer games have a higher percentage of "being good" instead of just total numbers. Good video tho.
@Cannotbetamed1

I hate over the shoulder/ cinematic 3rd person camera because of the lack of symmetry and it feels awkward. Also it killed the classical 3rd person camera, with the player centered in the lower half of the screen. "Cinematic experience" ruins the feeling that you have control and are one with the character. Cinematic camera position, quick time events... these things made me quit playing certain games. In the latest Tomb Raider games, every few steps you make, the camera starts giving you the "experience", and I'm always like "Hey! I'm playing here!".

Another unpopular gaming opinion I have: The Genesis has great sound. Some say: "Oh, the Genesis sound effects and music is horrible." Well, for some of the library, I'd agree with you. However, it has a grittier feel to it than the more orchestral sounding SNES. Listen to the Sonic games, the Road Rash games, the Streets of Rage games as well as the Shinobi games on Genesis, the music sounds amazing. I'll also make the argument for Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 on Genesis
@siahfishin5295
@siahfishin5295 2 жыл бұрын
I actually agree with you, but i also understand that this subject is super super subjective. On a technical standpoint if people are talking about the sound sonically, the genesis doesnt have as good sound, but if you are just talking about how it makes you feel and the technical sonic aspect doesnt matter then yea, i agree.

Hi there - I've been enjoying going through your back catalog of videos, seems you play a lot of the same games I do and have quite similar opinions on a lot of topics - I definitely agree that shorter games are almost always better. One thing I thought was worth mentioning is that while I totally get your thoughts about Let's Plays, I've kind of come around on them the last couple years. Partly because it seems that recently, demos aren't as available as they used to be, so it's hard to get a feel for how a game plays short of actually buying and playing it. So for me, odd as it may sound, Let's Plays kind of fill a gap that demos used to. Anyway, enjoying watching these videos, hope you enjoy making them!

As an avid Overwatch player I agree about it being addictive but not for the same reasons. The skins and loot boxes never really mattered much to me. But the quick pick up and play style always gets me. Like, I could start up and new game I haven't played... Or I could just play a few matches of Overwatch. I understand the appeal of unboxing videos all too well. Who doesn't like to open a new item? I don't think there is such a person, or that it ever has been, and an unboxing video is the closest proxy to opening a box yourself. That doesn't mean it's a "good" alternative, but it's an alternative for those who crave for it. As for "let's play" videos, I occasionally watch some. The appeal comes from either 1) watching someone play a game you like, 2) watching someone who is better than you so you can learn something, or 3) like to see and hear commentary on the game.

Ratio of fun to addiction in MMOs is a carefully-calculated mechanism, developers do focus tests and try to spread the fun parts between enough grinding and busywork so much the players will crave another dose of the fun part without making so much chores you quit from boredom. Single-player games generally don't need that and focus on fun all time, BUT the budget constrains force devs to make a sewer/garage level, or reuse assets after every time-and-money-consuming epic level they make.

The length of behemoth games like witcher 3 is what beats me down. Witcher 1 had a great intermission when you get transported to murky waters and allows you to finally slow down for a bit and chill. Witcher 2 is great with how taylored each chapter is especially if you take the iorveth path and can absorb vergen fully. Flotsam was really well made as a believable town in the deep woods by the river. Witcher 3 suffered from it's size. Novigrad was great and kaer mohren too there were also many much smaller gems hidden in the vanilla game but the absolute behemoth size made the main game suffer and my body suffered through too much sitting to play it all. When you play the witcher 3 expansions you see where CDPR can really shine when they can focus their attention more and make more high quality stuff. The base game wanted you to travel and experience more of what a witcher would in his life - taking contracts to get rid of monsters but it did mean the game kinda suffered because it grew so big. It also kinda broke immersion from the story of finding ciri desperatly and quickly. Witcher 3 also lacked any true emphasis on non-humans except for the wild hunt, but honestly you could easily forget they weren't humans. I loved the dwarven town of vergen in 2 and flotsam had the whole iorveth conflict. 3's issues can be solved though by simply not trying to do everything on the map and completing every mission. Although that is hard given how many of the sidequests have quality cutscenes you'd expect to find only in main missions even in other AAA games. Hell Mass effect andromeda had over the shoulder dialog for almost everything except a few rare exceptions. Just ignoring most of the item caches on the map helps you get through the game immensely.

Hmm, so first of all, I actually found myself here by mistake. I was watching board game videos and this came up in the related (well, actually the first video in your top 100 series came up first and this was linked from that). I used to play video games a lot but once I discovered board games like three years ago my video gaming slowed down a lot. But I still play here and there and I was glad to find this video, it was interesting. Some thoughts: The JRPG comment makes sense. I guess they focus more on telling a story than they do letting you play a role, sort of like a tabletop RPG with a bad, railroading DM. I can see a historical link and probably the name just stuck, but at this point it's probably not exactly the right name. As far as Blizzard, I think you're mostly right at this point. I think you go to far in comparing Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch to those free to play skinner box apps, but there's definitely some relation. But honestly when I think of Blizzard the first games I think of are Starcraft, Warcraft 2, and Warcraft 3. Those were incredible games that I put many hours into when I was younger. But yeah, their modern games don't seem to hold up to that. And the opinion I most strongly disagreed with was the Dragon Age one. I haven't played three yet, but Origins was one of the last games I completed back when I was still regularly playing games (even when I was regularly playing I still stayed a few years behind the release schedule to save money), and probably one of my favorite games I've ever played. Then I bought DA2 and I was so disappointed I quit around the end of the first act. Recently my cousin mentioned that he was playing Divinity Original Sin and really enjoying it. I'd backed it on kickstarter right before I stopped playing games, so I went back to play it. I enjoyed it enough but it sort of felt like a wannabe DA:O to me. But this inspired me to give DA2 another chance and I haven't gotten far, but it all came right back to me why I didn't like it. It just felt like such a dumbed-down action spectacle game. The thing that bothered me the most was how they took away the overhead camera angle for combat, which made giving orders to all of your party much harder and forced you to rely on the AI and the minimal scripting you could set, removing the interesting tactical combat of Origins in favor of WoW style cooldown management and watching over the top particle effects. Plus the gear made it feel like you didn't have much choice in terms of stats, which took away a decent part of the character building. I liked the way they did abilities a lot though, that's one of my big problems with D:OS. In terms of story, the first act at least sort of just feels like it's spinning its wheels, just doing stuff to fill time, and from what I've read it seems like the whole story sort of feels that way. You're just some bozo doing odd jobs while all the important stuff happens somewhere else. I can't say for sure though as I haven't played it all the way through. And the fact that you only have the one possible background and have to be human (ok, maybe you can pick one of three adjectives as part of character creation a la Mass Effect, but who cares) is pretty lame. And yeah, the backgrounds in Origins don't have a huge effect on gameplay either, but they help with roleplaying. Actually I think it's interesting that you enjoy Hawke when he seems to be a step in the direction of the JRPG total control over characters and story, and away from an RPG. And in terms of the characters, what you describe sounds fairly interesting, about them living their own lives. I'll be looking forward to that if I manage to do a better job getting into the game this time. But I remember not really liking any of the DA2 characters to the degree that I really liked my main party and favorite characters in DA:O. Granted it also had Alistair who was insufferable, but I can't imagine liking any of the DA2 characters nearly as much as I did Sten, Wynne, or Zevran. As far as my unpopular opinions, I hate sidescrolling 2D games and my favorite Castlevania is safely a 3D one (probably Lords of Shadow, but I also remember enjoying Lament of Innocence). And Shadow of the Colossus might be the most overrated game to ever exist. Beyond Good and Evil might also go on that list, but I couldn't take myself to even finish that one so I guess it could have suddenly become amazing. Wow, this got long. Sorry.

When it comes to Dragon Age, the combat is the least appealing thing to me. I love classic crpg turn-based combat, but none of the games really gave that to me. I didn't use the tactical mode in the games, so when DA2 made combat less tedious and require less micromanaging of my other party members I was happy. I don't find Hawke a step towards JPRGs at all. JRPGs don't let you develop your characters or the story. I could make Hawke develop into whatever I wanted her to be. Also, I love Alistair, Shadow of the Colossus, Beyond Good and Evil, and generally think 2D>3D when it comes to platformers, so I think we just have very different taste in games.

Yeah, I guess so. Though, if we're both doing a good job of picking unpopular opinions there should be a decent chance for a good amount of disagreement. But actually you're probably right. As far as Hawke, maybe comparing it to the JRPG situation goes too far, it was just because that topic had already come up in your video. But the general vibe of a more fixed protagonist with the generic nice/zany/mean Mass Effect style conversation wheel combined with the removal of tactical camera all felt like a shift away from RPGs toward action games. And don't get me wrong I like some action games, Devil May Cry might be my favorite franchise, but for Dragon Age it felt to me like a cynical move to appeal to a certain type of console gamer which represents a bigger portion of the market. But maybe I'm being unfair with that assumption.

I agreed with you about streaming & let's plays... ...until some very specific videos were made. For instance, I played Wonder Boy 3 the Dragon's Trap a lot when I was a kid, and while I was waiting for the remake, I liked watching blind let's plays of it, to see how people manage to play and how they react to certain parts of the game. Also, if you like Zelda A Link to the Past and know the game quite well, you should definitely take a look at the Randomizer Championships. Link to the playlist of the 2018 Spring one (there was also a Winter tournament) : kzbin.info/aero/PLdoWICJMgPKUYgoE7Hf4Xfq2MU1A75bmQ And to tell the truth, I never was a Zelda ALTTP fan. I liked the game, but that's it. The randomizer adds so much depth and fun to the experience, it's incredible. Each tournament is basically 2000 hours of great fun. I've been watching one game every evening for a few months now, and don't plan on stopping. You may also participate / create your own randomized games on the website : alttpr.com/ Aside from this, I agree with you : most LPs and streams are boring and uninteresting.

I prefer going to thrift stores and pawn shops as well for my retro game shopping as well. I could've very easily went on Amazon and dropped $20 on a copy of Donkey Kong Country with little consequence to me but, for that same price, I got DKC, A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, NBA Hangtime and Madden '93 as a bundle at a nearby pawn shop. Spending $40 on Super Mario Allstars + World is something I could do for a collection of games from my favorite series in the world but how about finding it along with 7 other SNES games (including Space Megaforce, which I would NOT be able to buy online so easily) for less than $15 at Goodwill? I could go on, but then this post will be longer than it's already going to be. The point is, while deals like this don't happen very often (my last big find that I can think of happened late last year), the feeling of getting pricey games for chump change is quite the feeling to say the least and, even with the cheap stuff like -The Wrath of Cortex- Beach Spikers ( -Xbox- Gamecube) or Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? (NES), you get them instantly and can enjoy that gaming goodness the minute you get home. TL;DR - I like thrift store shopping for games too. EDIT: Okay so turns out The Wrath of Cortex is a bit more expensive on Amazon than I remembered, so it's getting replaced. Say hello to Beach Spikers! :D

Even not taking into account the fact that I just don't have the time to invest in a 100 hour game, shorter, more focused games are a lot more fun than open world games where I wonder around for hours getting from location to location, doing boring fetch quests or kill this or that quests. You make plenty of good points and I'd never thought about jRPGs not being RPGs in the traditional sense. Having played so many jRPGs I came to equate the RPG genre as a whole with a long story, and stats & their progression rather than playing the role of a character even though I've played pen and paper RPGs since I was a teenager. I have to disagree about Nintendo making bad controllers. Granted this is an old video but the Switch joycons are a saving grace for me. I'm slowly but surely developing carpal tunnel syndrome which makes standard controllers difficult to use. While it's insignificant for most people the constant stretching required to hit buttons or move a joystick really adds up for me. With joycons being so small the movements my fingers make are equally small which allows me to game far more comfortably. Even if we ignore my specific need for small Switch joycons I'd say Nintendo's 8 and 16 bit era controllers were great. The NES is, to my knowledge at least, the progenitor of all modern controllers. It gave us the now standard layout. The SNES controller was less revolutionary but I think was the first to give us shoulder buttons and had probably the best d-pad to date. SNES fighting games are still my favorite specifically because of that last point. With the SNES controller they also made something far more ergonomic. They've absolutely made some terrible controllers though, e.g. the N64.
@QJ89
@QJ89 5 жыл бұрын
By all accounts, the Gamecube controllers were the best post-16B ones Nintendo have made. I've been thinking about getting one for the Switch! Yeah, the N64 pads were flawed, in retrospect. But since I grew up with it, I never thought those colourful, 3-pronged ships were terrible.

That is a good question. I'm not sure what I'd call them. It's difficult because the Japan part doesn't even need to apply. Like there are RPGs from Japan that I'd call RPGs (like the Souls games) and there are American games that are mechanically JRPGs.

I will say that the store on PS4 is a total mess, and I HATE that you can't delete something from your library. Once you play it...even a demo...it's there for life. This has actually made me not download demos. Whoa whoa whoa...Nintendo makes proper PRO controllers :P Seriously, the Wii U pro controller is fantastic. Lightweight, unbelievable battery life and really tight to use in games. I actually really liked the Wii U's traditional gamepad though. Part of the fun of game chasing is finding the unexpected. Sometimes digging through stuff will net some awesome games that you wouldn't have found otherwise, but the way game chasing has been for the past few years, I typically just purchase online instead. I actually stopped doing pickup videos aside from fan gifts just because they just weren't that engaging. I think LPs have their purpose but honestly I only started doing them occasionally because people wanted to see them. It's pretty tough to stay engaging in more in-depth games...I also tend to focus more on what's going on in-game than actually entertaining people when it comes to LPs, so I generally don't do them by myself. Like I said, it all depends on the game. if it's a game I know like the back of my hand or a simple beat 'em up, then it can be really fun. It's funny...your opinions on what makes an RPG engaging or credible as an RPG are the things I actually loathe about most western RPGs. I LOVE character creation, but I feel like that's where most of the fun resides. Most western RPGs seem to not be able to attract my attention. Games like Skyrim for example are really...really boring IMO. Blizzard is overated, and regarding short games...amen. Dude, I'm a busy adult. Anything beyond 20 hours, unless i'm completely enamored by it, i'm not interested in. Xenoblade Chronicles X is apparently a 100+ hour game. Pass. Great video :)

When I think about RPGs I think more about the isometric CRPGs like Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1/2, Torment, over things like Skyrim or Fallout 3/4. And though my feelings on the open world western RPGs are mixed, they do fulfill the narrative character building aspect (though not always well). In regards to LPs, I also focus much more on the game than being entertaining. Which is why I'd make a terrible streamer.

Here's mine: handheld gaming is much better than console gaming. The controls are simpler, way less sensitive and you don't have to toggle around a massive joystick. And another one: I don't care about story-driven games. I'd rather have something I can pick up and play multiple times. Wrestling games, driving games and sports games are all examples. I like Pokemon but other than that I'm not into longer-term "story" games or RPGs.

I really dislike haggling as well, yeah it can feel good afterwards when you've been able to work out a good deal in your favor, but I always find the process of going through it uncomfortable and nerve-racking. I also prefer shorter more focused games over games with really long campaigns with huge open-worlds. I had the a very similar experience in the Arkham Batman series as you did with The Witcher series where I found Arkham Asylum had a nicely contained game world with great pacing and length that wasn't too long, but as soon as I played the next open-world game, Arkham City, I found it less enjoyable because there were a lot more more things going on at once, with too many tasks and side-quests to do which felt overwhelming at first. I got used to it eventually but still feel the first game is better than all the open-world sequels in the series, which also happens to be my unpopular opinion compared to other people I know who love the series.
