Star Ocean is the most special game to me. It was the very first RPG I ever completed. Everyone else was going nuts over Final Fantasy games but I was too poor then to buy newer games so I traded a couple N64 sports games to a friend down the street for Star Ocean Second Story and omg, the memories.

Excellent lineup; you genuinely warmed my heart when you named Parasite Eve as one of your favorites. Top 5 for me: 5) Tecmo's Deception ... primitive now, but at the time, it was something completely new and original. 4) Final Fantasy Chronicles ... at long last, the *real* version of FFIV. Still my favorite of the mainline Final Fantasy series. 3) Symphony of the Night ... let's be honest, every Castlevania since has been chasing this one. 2) Parasite Eve ... still one of my all-time favorite games, across all genres and all platforms. 1) Final Fantasy Tactics ... I've put more hours into this than I have most MMOs; I still love this (and PE) as much today as I did back in 1998.

Wip3out and Spyro 2 have left me with so many good memories. I sometimes go back and watch walkthroughs of Spyro 2, and I just sit there with a huge smile and tears in my eyes; such a heartwarming feeling. Spyro was my friend as I was growing up. I'm 22 now. That game means so much to me.

LOL, "I had to be social." I remember that feeling as a kid. I love that you included Parasite Eve! Great game. My wife and I bought it on a whim when we got our PS1, because it had a female protagonist, and my wife thought it looked fun. She didn't take to it, however, and I ended up being enamored with it. I never finished the long trek up the building in the epilogue to get the "good" ending, but the main quest alone was great fun.

Yeah, the Chrysler building is pretty brutal. I think I made it 30 or 40 floors up, but I hadn't crafted strong enough weapons earlier in the game, and though you don't really have to "grind" in the traditional JRPG sense, Aya just wasn't strong enough from my play through of the game to advance any further than that. I would like to eventually go back and replay the game, now that I have a much better sense of what I would need to do. Anyway, great video.

Xenogears and Metal Gear Solid are absolute locks, IMO. Xenogears is possibly my favorite JRPG ever. It just felt so revolutionary and unique at the time.

This is kinda late since this vid came up on my suggestions, but FF7 holds such a special place in my heart. I remember buying it when it just came out. I worked at Toys R Us and I even got a promotional shirt when I picked it up after my shift (employee discount included!). I loved your story. One thing that also makes it special is the intro scene (the clip you showed) shows a shout out to Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. That is one of my fav albums of all time and one of the game artists was a big fan at the time. In fact, some of the music is very reminiscent (the slower sentimental scenes). I feel like it would be a band you might like too. Shoegaze from the 90s. Back to FF7, i normally don’t feel the polygons age well but in the case of FF7, I don’t need it any other way. But I do wish the combat rate was less. Love your channel. So chill and real.

5. Soul Reaver (while probably not the best in pure gamplay, the concept and overall style blew my mind as a wee lad) 4. Soul Blade (First 3d fighter i got into, while ppl were tussling over tekken I was running the room with good o'l Taki) 3. Resident Evil Director's cut (Never had nightmares as a kid until this game, nuff said) 2. Final Fantasy 8 (The game that lead me to first discover the term "RPG". once I summoned my first "GF" i was locked in) 1. Vandal Hearts (Solid storyline, solid gameplay and the reason im addicted to tactical RPG's to this day. Undoubtedly the most sentimental game for me of all time, just hearing the soundtrack throws me back) Great video Really got me thinking back to my fond days with the system

Thanks for the unintended shoutout at 4:09 :P Cool list! A ton of good racing and car-based games in general came out around this time and became increasingly popular. I never got into the realistic racing games so much, but one of my favourite vehicular games is Twisted Metal 2. I used to play that all the time when I was a kid, and it's still fun as all hell today. I've never played Star Ocean, but keep hearing good things and might try to snag it at some point. Parasite Eve was awesome! It's a very cool mix of a bunch of different genres, and to be honest it's pretty amazing that they managed to pull it off as well as they did at the time. I love Rayman as well...that game oozes charm and is just super fun to play in general. With respect to Final Fantasy games, I never really liked 7 or 8, but FF9 is my favourite of the 3D-era FF games. I loved the characters in it, and I liked that the art direction was more akin to the original titles than the styles of FF7 and 8 were. They're all good though, just a matter of preference in the end, haha! My list would probably consist of Twisted Metal 2, Resident Evil 2, FF 9, SIlent Hill, and Rayman. I'm not the hugest fan of Symphony of the Night, at least not enough to put it in my top 5. Good vid! I keep meaning to revisit Rayman soon, so maybe I'll fire it up in the next week or so. - Adam

+Replay Ability FF8 is my least favourite of my particular FF "era" (I never played before 7, I didn't find anything after X-2 good enough to finish). I hated that Draw system so much, and the characters were kinda meh. Honestly, I think FF9 might be a better game than FF7, but 7 just had such a prominent place in my gaming history. I was thinking I'll do a Rayman review one of these days. I put it on to capture the minute or two of footage I needed for the video, and ended up playing through 5 or 6 levels.

We were a die-hard Nintendo/PC family, so I unfortunately missed the PS train... at first. I bought myself a PS2 in highschool which opened up an entire library of PS games to me (thanks, Sony for backwards compatibility) I still play to this day. Thrilled to see some love for Parasite Eve, one of my favorites; and while I'm sure it has it's detractors, also loved the sequel. And, won't lie, Final Fantasy VII also was the breaking point for me in getting a PlayStation. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment was one of my favorite JRPGs for a long time; I'd recommend that if you get the opportunity and haven't played it before. Also the magnificent remakes of the Lunar series, which feels a little bittersweet now when I think back on my fond memories of Working Designs. (Although I also have may fond memories of PS1 games that weren't JRPGs, notably Tekken 2 and 3, Metal Gear Solid, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.) Great video!

Great list! Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is the game I got with the console. Damn the load times, but I loved that game. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. I think my most anticipated game ever. The game was sooo delayed, I would read every gaming magazine I could to get updates. Finally a demo came out in one of the mags. Must have played it 100 times, and still the game ways a ways away. Not alot to debate with these picks. ALL are great game's on multiple front's and for sure classic's. Our Parasite Eve experience's are kinda similar with us receiving the game during the holiday's & our game time was interrupted with family time. @@Cannotbetamed1 Have you ever played Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi, Fear Effect games, Dino Crisis games, Silent Hill, 40 Winks, Crash Bandicoot games, Spyro the Dragon games, or Tomb Raider games? I’m really into the original PS1 and PS2. They had a huge array of great games on the list. Ever played or heard of PlayStation Underground? I only had one from my childhood, but I recently collected them all. It’s a great collection. PlayStation Interactive CD Sampler Vol. 8 was how I first heard of Parasite Eve. Aya Brea is a terrific character! I’m thinking either Yvonne Strahovski or Willa Holland (Aqua from Kingdom Hearts) could voice her in the remake! Who would you choose to voice Aya, Pam?

Great choices. I never played the older star ocean games. I got into RPGs back around 1993. Dark Wizard on the Sega Cd and Final Fantasy 3 for Snes were my introduction. I had no real interest in RPGs and they seemed boring to me, until I got into those 2 games. After that RPG became one of my favorite genres. FF 7 was one of my favorite games on the ps 1 and really blew me away. Metal Gear Solid was another one of that caliber. Twisted Metal 1 and 2 I loved. Part 2 was especially polished and had alot of depth but the first one was really impressive to me at the time and got me into the series. There would be too many great games to mention on ps 1, and I have yet to experience many more on emulation, once I get this PC built, so its difficult to narrow it down to 5. Great videos. I can tell you have a genuine passion for gaming.

Ah,ok. I almost did. I was 13 or so in 93 and my friend was playing dark wizard and final fantasy 3. My thinking was , turn this shit off, lets play fatal fury 2 or something good. ha ha. Looked boring as fuck to me at the time. He showed me the games and then I got sucked into the genre. So I almost missed those early RPGs as well.

I'd add Castlevania - Symphony of the Night, Grand Theft Auto, and Psychic Detective (Vastly under appreciated! You have to play it a second time to begin to get what's going on). You may want to give a very obscure series some love and a chance, Suikoden 1 and 2 tho part 2 is one of the best games on the PS1(and the sequel follows some of the characters from the first game and allows the player to use the saved data after beating the first game in the second game for a secret character which I won't spoil)... Also Legend of Dragoon... But I have to give major props to you for the love you gave to Parasite Eve cuz that game was truly epic when it came out.

I recently watched the ff7 commercials online, nearly brought a tear to my eye. I was twelve at the time and it completely blew my mind, god what a magical time to be a gamer. Cheers on that, the og psx commercials were amazing

I didn't have a PS1 back in the day (had a Saturn) when emulation started getting good I borrowed a few games. There are so many gems on the PS1, I remember fondly of playing Tenchu, R-Type Delta, Symphony of the Night and Silent Hill. All amazing games. At my friends house who had the PS1 we'd play Tekken 3 or Street Fighter Ex2.

Final fantasy 7 was the reason I got a ps1 as well. In fact I bought an n64 because initially the next final fantasy was supposed to be on that system and the second they announced it for PlayStation I jumped ship immediately. At that time final fantasy was just too good to miss. Parasite eve is also another great game. Wish they would remake that for ps4

I used to play Gran Turismo 2, Resident Evil 2 and 3, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 a lot after School, I even had Final Fantasy VIII but I never finished it, I was stuck at the very beginning of Disc 2, I really miss those days but my PSOne stopped working. :(

Nice list. Rather diverse, even for just 5 games. RPGs, platformer, and racer. Parasite Eve is one of my all time favourite games of any kind actually, so I can relate on that. PS1 also intro'd me to JRPGs as well. I see it FF VII the reason you got your PS1, and not a bad reason at all. My reason for getting PS1 was actually 2 games. Previous console before PS1 was the Sega Genesis, so it had been a while I was solely into PC gaming. I discovered Tekken in 1996, and I'm a rather big Tekken fan as you can probably tell from my avatar. Also, I discovered Resident Evil as well. Being that I'm a huge survival horror fan, as some may notice from my username in tribute to Alone in the Dark, those 2 games were instant PS1 sellers to me. Needless to say, I would have gotten a PS1 for other reasons soon enough, had I not gotten it for those 2 games initially. Quite a stellar library on that system. I'll leave my Top 5 for interest's sake as well. :) 1. Resident Evil 2 2. Metal Gear Solid 3. Tekken 2 4. Kagero: Deception II 5. Parasite Eve Also, I had a similar situation with the memory card and Resident Evil. lol I'm sure there were many of us in that situation back then.

Good list, Pam. PlayStation One had some really good games both from Sony themselves & great 3rd party support. My top five PS1 games I have the fondest memories of in no particular order: Resident Evil 2 Metal Gear Solid Final Fantasy VII Gran Turismo 2 Twisted Metal 2 Honorable mentions go to Crash Bandicoot 3 & Street Fighter Alpha 3. I have heard good things about Parasite Eve, but never got around to playing it. I might get through PSN either on PS3 or Vita.

nice :) I think we only got Parasite Eve 2 here in Australia, it was pretty good, luckily we also had SO:SS which i really enjoyed. awesome to hear Beyond Good and Evil is one of your favourite games, one of mine too. I confess i paused the video and searched your channel lol, was disappointed. Would absolutely love to see you do a video on it. Would be really interested to hear your perspective on it. I have a memory stuck in my head around FF7 too, the tiny TV set in my room died while playing FF7, it did that thing where the picture just shrank to a dot in the centre of the screen :( (it was up in the snow region). But serendipitously the lovely older lady down the road who used to hand out peaches to neighbours was asking neighbours if they wanted a couple sofa chairs and an old woodpanel color tv they were getting rid of after upgrading both their lounge sweet and to a flatscreen (still CRT lol), so we ended up with that as a replacement within a month, and it was bigger than the one that died so that was cool :D

The two games I'd definitely add to the list are my always beloved Valkyrie Profile and SF Alpha 3. I guess it is fairly accurate to say that those two games are my childhood.

Nice list! I also enjoyed Star Ocean and FFVII. I still need to try out Parasite Eve, it looks pretty cool. I'd be hard pressed to come up with a top 5 (or even top 10) list of PSX games because the system had so many good ones. However, I'm pretty sure any "Best of PSX" list I made would include Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I played the crap out of that one back when I was in high school, LOL. If you haven't played Symphony of the Night yet, I highly recommend it. It's an Action-RPG/Platformer hybrid whose gameplay, music and graphics (which still hold up thanks to making use of gorgeous sprite art) are, IMO, some of the best the system has to offer.

Star Ocean on the SFC is AMAZING and I greatly wish we had got it in the US back on the SNES. It looked amazing, had some really decent voice acting for being so compressed, but probably would have cost more to translate than they wanted to spend.

We have a similar FF7 story! I didn't have a memory card and eventually got out of Midgar but couldn't save so I tried to leave it on for days lol. Even tried to play sick to stay home and keep going!

We must be about the same age with Gran Turismo and driving. My friends and I were all into cars so by the time GT3 came out we owned or had owned several cars from the game. In GT3 and GT4 particularly the handling is surprisingly accurate to real life from the cars we had (WRX, FTO, RX7, Skyline, etc).

I didn't get into Gran Turismo until number 2, and really got addicted to 4 on the PS2. Love racing sims. Star Ocean 2 was a really fun game, but I never finished it. I started playing it again on the PSP when it was released for that handheld, but ended up stopping near the same point. I gotta go back to it. Parasite Eve was AMAZING! I LOVE that game. I'm right there with you on Final Fantasy VII. It sold the Playstation to me. I was actually kind of disappointed when I saw the gameplay graphics of Final Fantasy VII, but I loved it anyway. Great list. I need to actually go and grab my top 5 games. I don't actually have all of them! Soul Blade Armored Core Parasite Eve Final Fantasy VII Castlevania Symphony of the Night Well, maybe. +Brasel TheGamer I need to play Castlevania: SotN again. I never owned it (until recently), I borrowed it from a friend and never got through the whole thing. I wasn't used to non-linear games in that genre and kept getting lost. I think I've only beat Star Ocean once, though I've played through the first disc a ton of times. It's great, but it's really long, especially if you're trying to do everything.

The PS1 is one of my favorite consoles too, as I have many memories with it. Star Ocean: The 2nd Story, Breath of Fire 3, Xenogears, Final Fantasy 7, The Legend of Dragoon, and RE1 DC & RE2 are a few of my favorite PS1 games ... as well as Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey. (also love the 1st Parasite Eve & Vagrant Story).

Oh, I think you'll love Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey. 'Tis an innovative platformer that's one of a kind in atmosphere, story, & gameplay. Very odd! ;) I also have the 2nd one, Abe's Exodus. As for Legend of Dragoon, it is a terrific Sony game, and I never believed the media's comparison of it to FF7, saying its a Final Fantasy 7 killer. I love both, and Dragoon was its own thing. Loved it so much I got the figures on my game room wall. Too bad they canceled the sequel.
