It's only crazy if you look at it from the eyes of a psychologist. Or any sane person for that matter. But then again, I never claimed to have all my ducks in a row. That being said, IT IS fun to mess around every now and again.
That's how great ideas are born.
THIS however, might lie in the category of interesting, but ultimately not worth the effort. One motor (especially wired with a proper breaker) would surely move the canoe along just fine. And wouldn't freak out the battery as much. And would lift up out of the water easier when it got shallow...
ALRIGHT! I admit it. This idea might just be dumb.
But somehow, it still brings a smile to my face. Hopefully it brought you a few minutes of joy too.
On another note, this day I had filmed myself out there and then played around with those trolling motors, but I caught no fish. And the 'build' didn't take all that much effort. It smelt like it had all the fixings of a skunk and a less-then epic day. Many times like that have wound up the way of rotten footage that never sees the light of social media. But stories like that aren't always losers. We all have had days that didn't go as planned. Some that might have involved a bunch of drama. But that IS life. And spun just right, it makes for memorable times that eventually become the 'good ol' days' that we reflect back upon. Don't let them all go by without realizing you're living those 'good ol' days' right now! If you're reading this, thanks for joining me for this episode of real life and hijinks. It WAS fun. And I hope you're out there having fun during those types of days as best as YOU can too.

Good video as always! FYI, a j-stroke has the power stroke close to the canoe, and curves away from it as you rotate the paddle slightly. Looks like you were trying to curve it inward. The slight rotation with your top hand makes it pretty comfortable too. I've seen many trolling motors used on canoes, but just one of them. This should be fun. :)

I started canoeing in "75". A friend gave me an old kayak paddle he'd found. Man was that a game changer. Least for flat water. I still have a 17' alum canoe. Tho it hasn't seen water since I got a yak about 8 years ago. I been thinkin I'd like to get one of them lighter ones like they got now. Yer right, you can haul more. and you can stand up to pee. ... Ya, I'd like to get one I can get up on the truck rack without throwing my back out. Happy New Years, Marty!!!

I had a quick old Sawyer tandem canoe that I mounted a small electric trolling motor on when I moved back to MI from CO. I'd paddled whitewater with it for many years out west, but the flatwater around MI seemed tedious, especially paddling into the wind. The trolling motor worked just about perfect, although it was a bit awkward to steer where I had to mount it. I recommend electric trolling motors to anyone to propel their canoe at a pretty good clip. It sure beats paddling into the wind.

I set my canoe up with a single Thirty pound thrust and I often use two canoes together side by side. I've even had a third boat ,a kayak for extra people and gear. I love going down river on camping canoe trips. But that's what inspired me to be able to bring a group and when we're tied up side by side the boats are more stable. Also both the captain and other rear seat passenger can take turns operating the motor , from either seat. My nephew was catching fish from his kayak all going down river fully loaded with all seven seats occupied on a camping trip for instance. Total weight in two canoes exceeded 1500 lbs with sleeping and tent gear a grill and gas stove and lots of food, two marine batteries and fishing gear. I have thought to use two motors myself and love that idea . Also when out fishing by my self I set the ballast so the front is a little higher and can troll hands free by just leaning the direction I want the front of the canoe to go, allowing me to cast and reel. Going up river on a low rpm I can sit stationary or move up river slowly. I appreciate the pioneers of canoeing with a paddle and exploring waters even sailing in a canoe. I say do them all. 👏

Do both! Just make the trolling motor rig easy enough to put on and take off. I did that with a Wilderness 14.5 tandem kayak. I have a 40 pound trolling motor mounted to a 2x3 "A" frame of sorts, that puts the motor in the very back in the exact center of the boat. I took the head off and steer it with an eye bolt connected to a piece of PVC pipe. (Still working on a better pivoting setup here)Pull the stick, turn right...push the stick, turn left. One motor, and its easy to steer. I put the throttle in a watertight electrical box, and leave it on the floor in front of my seat. I used a piece of metal to spin the metal shaft of the speed control. The whole thing connects with 2 bolt holes that go through the top of the kayak. Its a blast to drive. The only issue is weight capacity. With the motor, and group 27 battery, I can really only go out with it alone. Its not very stable with my 12 year old son in it also. And I worry if we swamp it, the battery will be way too much for the float bags to keep at the surface. Id be hiring a diver or something...lol

I love canoeing, kayaking, all sort of boating and paddling. Canoeing it’s a whole different art, very nice for certain bodies of water and camping. But it is a lot harder from a professional paddlers standpoint. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at a sail in a canoe as well as a motor. A motor is also very nice if traveling upriver.

One water snake motor on the back with a landing net pole as steering and a speed controller for motion. But I am considering just mounting it on the side like yours. Grew up on coastal waters, spent hundreds of hours on various powered boats, inboard, outboard, stern drive, kayaks (both fresh and saltwater) and even had a canoe Dad cut the stern off of and fiberglassed a flat plywood transom onto to mount a 12v motor to it.... never thought of doing a twin fixed prop drive system like this.... if you can rig up a fly by wire throttle you'll be laughing.
@barthanes1

Cool idea. The only controls you would need are throttle, forward/reverse, and steering. And steering would just switch one motor or the other from forward to reverse. I would use at least two batteries in parallel so you could have the same range as using one trolling motor. You'd have to balance the batteries first.

I clamped two equally spaced at 33% fore aft starboard and one dead center port. Originally thought it would be better to cut the long shafts but ended up extending them 50%. Starboard and 10% port side. The starboard motors are tilted 10 -20% at full extension. The portside tilt runs at 45° plane. Taxi is slow but from a float at full power I'm off the water in seconds and flying. Generally she settles down and balances on the props just as the portside burbles, this when I have yaw controll and lateral movement is weight shift.

Definitely got the best of both worlds there now you've walked away from that boat and living in that gorgeous caravan back at Zoffingers. I've fished from a canoe for years. It's just annoying in windy conditions. A lot heavier and a bigger pain when solo than a yak, but for carrying capacity, and shallow draft, not to mention dead simple it's fantastic. That said, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't considered how to add a little 2 horse motor or trolling motor to it.

Ingenious mind there Mr Z. What’s the advantages and disadvantages to a kayak vs a canoe? Appears to be more space inside the canoe but is it less stable? My inflatable kayak has an optional mount similar to your setup for an electric motor. I never use it as it makes it so heavy and pita to put in and out of the water..

This plastic canoe is very light and has a flat bottom which makes it surprisingly stable and capable of bearing a lot of weight. Some canoes are likely skinnier and faster but less stable. Like kayaks, they vary but generally are bigger and better for two people. Or three.

I've been canoing around on and off for over 50 years. I like the twin engines idea alot, same as my big boat. Those motors need be no deeper than the canoe's keel. Its not like you've got a planing transom to match depth to. Raise the motors up. I was in a huge local lake with a boating chanel well marked. I had heard it was shallow at the outflow end and was in my motorized canoe digging the scenery and the canoe tilted the motor swung up and i was in 4" of water. Hahahahah. Raised the motor up and unbent the fin on its bottom , and reset the depth so the propeller was just barely below. As soon as it was spinning it needed lowering a bit more.

I had a 7ft square back canoe, almost like a john boat but not that wide, as a kid. Hook a troll motor on it and I could go lots of places and caught a ton of fish. These days I fish from a Hobie pedal drive kayak. I am not so much a fan of canoes today. My son is grown and it is just me loading up and going fishing so smaller and less weight and less complicated is best for me as I get older. I take a few lures in baggies in my flotation vest pockets, a couple of rods, a paddle, water to drink, and a snack. Catch and release except for pan fish once in a while for a fish fry.

You must of been fishing some shallow water. Having to do the "J" Stroke in a sweeping manner usually indicates very shallow water. Trolling motors are nice to get from here to there but then it's a paddle for me when fishing. I have been in canoes all my life plus some kayaks and even Pirogues. I made one Pirogue and included a sailing set for it. Worked good when the wind blew. In my 79 years I like boats that require a paddle to get down or up stream. Motorized one's were for work even a high powered air boat. The best boat for you is the one you like.

I was told point blank at the Plant City (since moved to Dover) Florida tax collector's office (aka DMV) that you do not have to register a vessel with an electric trolling motor. I was told that only motorized engines have to be registered like a gas motor. I am still skeptical of this but for last 6 years I have been trolling around in my hobie pro angler 14 using R3 and then Minn Kota both 30 lbs and never once was I stopped by FWC or Sherriff on the water. So I don't know what to say there. I keep my fins and my paddle with me at all times so shrugs. I spent some time in a canoe and not a particular fan but only because I had my family members with me and it was a zoo anyways. I have seen people flip in cocroach bay losing everything in water so I honestly do not see myself ever purchasing a sit inside kayak or a canoe for that very reason.

I've been a powered canoe fan for many years and I'm still a bit fanatical about it. A good canoe needs very little thrust to exceed normal paddling power. I use a 55lb Newport and run it for hours at the 1/2 setting - thinking (right or wrong) that the bigger motor is more efficient at the half setting than a 30lb thrust motor would be at full power -- the motor doesn't weight much more. It is no big deal that I have only one motor on the left side - the canoe doesn't care. My battery is a 108ah deep cycle from Walmart and I'm quite sure that I can cover 6 or seven miles maybe a lot more. My canoe is an old Grumman 17 symmetrical and I have one of the original Grumman bolt-on transom mounts. I also have a new Suzuki 2.5 4-stroke and an old Johnson 3hp 2cyl 2-stroke. The Suzuki might as well last all day on a 1.5 litre gas tank and the Johnson can actually be too much if I don't have the weight of a second person. Its quite obvious that 2021 Suzuki and 1991 Johnson measured their HP differently. I'm a geezer and not spry enough anymore to be tossing the canoe on top of the truck so I got myself a trailer. Its handy to have all of the gear and battery or gas tank in the boat and then drop the motor on to the canoe when I get it into the water. I've also got the canoe wired up with nav, floods, fish finder and interior lighting running off of a 16ah lithium battery from Amazon. Geezerdom has also made me a bit wobbly with my sense of balance so I use a set of the stabilizers from Spring Creek Manufacturing. They work and they probably work better than the inflatable type. I'm searching for something better and have a hard time understanding why there isn't a larger demand for these and there are no better products available. New this year will be a pair of down riggers for lake trout.

If you design a counter weight and/or balance correctly, and hinge the motor mount, you can push them forward and out of the water, maybe a way to clamp in place, so it can come up if you hit something but also be strong enough for reversing. some sort of joystick might be nice or small throttles for control. Best of luck, and do it! Make it so you can put it on whatever you want with minimal change needed. (all suggestions, not telling you to do it if you don't like it)

I use a canoe with a trolling motor in New Port Richey and it works great.

Looks like a nice spot! Ha ha ha 2x4 was my first temporary kayak engine mount and it lasted 7 years it probably would have lasted years longer but to save weight now it’s pvc pipe and aluminium, it’s not as strong but folds up and it’s very light and can mount either 18lb cheap electric or 30lb minnkota or my homemade 2-3hp 2stroke outboard that is based on a 29cc rc boat engine and 79mm surface drive prop and makes around 40lb thrust it pushes my little Malibu mini x to around 8kts.

I never tried that with a cannoe but I had a small flat bottm jon boat and I used a high powered trolling motor on it and it felt like you was in a speed boat. It was a blast and wish I still had it.

12 volt trollers can survive on 18 volts but it is hard to find a 6volt lithium except hand drills. So two batteries, with deep cycle capability and some other stuff makes for a sure runner.

Thanks Marty. I love my canoe, have been fishing in it for 15 years and I'm just about to add a trolling motor...just one though. I have a short about it on my channel, and I'm in the process of making a longer update video about it, hope you'll check it out. And as long as you leave the ability to tilt the motors, you won't lose that shallow draft.

We’re doing the same thing with a 16’ aluminum canoe. I’m using salvaged 18650 cells for the battery and plan on linking the motors somehow as well. Lakes frozen tho 😢
