Closed toe keen sandals with neoprene booties for cold weather works very very well for me! Keeps the feet warm, easy to dry overnight and the neoprene adds a bit mote protection from twigs and what not. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing!! I would agree totally. I use hiking boots for colder weather, but either one is great!

Hi Pete! I am not surprised at your number one "go to" footwear. I bought a pair almost identical to yours a few years ago to use as shower shoes at a Bible Camp as I cannot stand flip-flops. They are so comfortable that I find myself putting them on for almost anything other than dress up or yard work. I enjoy all your videos.

Thank you! I want SO BADLY to wear Keen sandals on portage, they make great sense but those instep openings are not very forgiving for big-ankled folks. Still on the hunt, and very appreciative of your reviews!

Hey Pete: 12 years ago, I snagged a pair of Keen McKenzie half price and still wear them kayaking to this day. Because of their extra mesh, I like them better than the Keen Newport.

Great feedback! Hopefully someone who's looking for a pair might heed your advice!

Hey Pete, hope you enjoyed Temagami! I wore my Merrel hiking shoes on the portages and in the water up there given how sharp and jagged the rocks were on the shores in Temagami’s waters. And kept a nice lightweight pair of dry shoes for campsite life in my pack. Also a big fan of closed-toe hiking sandals, though no matter how much I tighten them they still get sucked off my feet in the muckiest of portages! Cheers, Mike.

I ended up wearing my Scarpa hiking boots to Temagami with the insanely steep portages and lots of jagged rocks. I'm glad I wore them!

I have a pair of Keen sandals, similar to your first example and they're alright. However I find with portaging they aren't the best because you can end up with twigs under your foot. I've recently picked up a pair of shoes that have drainage through the soles and they're excellent for canoeing.

Thanks for sharing! Yes, even closed toe sandals can pick up twigs, but open-toed are way worse. I love shoes with drainage though they can be a bit pricey.

Good video about footwear for Canoe & kayaking. I do a lot of kayaking from may Through November if the weather is still warm. I only kayak the warmer months because I have big & very very Extremely wide feet 🦶 sz15 6E wide ( which is very very extremely wide feet 🦶 ) with very very chubby fat wide toes that are Evenly straight across making my foot very very Extremely wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. My foot outgrow shoes , socks , & boots when I was young & Flip flops 🩴 is the only footwear that will barely and I mean barely fit on my feet 🦶 because my toes are wider than the flip flops 🩴 straps. I can't wear shoes or socks because my toes are Evenly straight across & shoes are made for toes that are at a 45° Degrees angle & when I had shoes on my 4/5 toes will get crushed & hurt my feet & toes & flip-flops 🩴is the only footwear that will Allow my toes to be comfortable & Spread out comfortable. Because of this i have to kayak barefooted 👣 because it not easy at all trying to find a pair of footwear that a size 15 6 E wide in a store. I have 6 boys & they all have very wide feet 🦶 & we all go kayaking , kayak camping , kayak fishing barefooted 👣. Now when we are at camp depending on the camp site we are Either barefooted 👣 or wearing flip flops 🩴. We don't have any problems with things getting Between are toes & are feet 🦶 wearing flip flops 🩴 because we watch were we are going. I have been do this all my life since I was a lil boys so you are talking about 50 years now with no problem at all beside having very very Extremely wide feet 🦶. I was born with very very extremely wide feet 🦶 for a baby & now I am a chubby fat dude not Heavy but i am not Skinny At all. Good video buddy thanks you for sharing this video.

What are those thick toed sandals? Are they the generic one? I want a pair for canoe tripping to protect my toes in rocky areas.
@ruggedoutdoorsguide9904 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the closed toe sandals are generic - they literally have NO branding or writing on them of any kind. However, you can order lots of the same style from Amazon -amzn.to/43nANDq

aren't you worried about getting lyme disease by wearing open shoes?
@ruggedoutdoorsguide99047 ай бұрын
No, not really. I check myself at the end of the day and throughout the day for ticks. Most of my time is spent in a canoe (away from ticks) and on an open, rocky portage (also away from ticks). Most ticks latch on when you go trudging through thick forest underbrush, and on the rare occasion where I do that, I'll check myself over pretty well. Good question though! Cheers,
