Great video. I've been interested in seeing what they would outfit you with. Would love to see a post mortem video on this meal plan. What worked? What didnt? Is happy yak any good?

I would really like to see a follow up video of packing all of these items into a bag. What does it weight? How much space does it take up? How many people came with you on this trip? I can't imagine all of this food fitting into an Ursak or a Bear Canister. Like the food ideas but part of my challange is dealing with weight and space.

I agree with the weight and volume. It’s heavy stuff, and it requires a lot of wood and time to cook which i don’t want to spend out there. I’m going dehydrated everything next time.

I take a vacuum sealer and separate each day and label it then seal it. That way you slit open the bag in the AM and you have bfast, lunch and dinner, and a handy trash bag for the day. Also, your food is water tight. Vacuum sealing bagles reduces volume and although compressed, they stay fresh for lunches by day 5. Depending on how long it takes to get to the put in and temp I dont do much fresh. I do bring a bag of apples.

I did similar on a recent trip, but did dinner, breakfast, lunch - and clothes in a ziploc - with the whole lot going into a 5L dry bag. That way I can grab one bag from the boat and have evening and morning covered.

I do dry and dehydrated meals for all meals with the exception of snacks and lunch ( usually tortillas and peanut butter). If I do bring fresh food it is only, and exclusively for day 1 , I can't bring myself to carry the weight, along with the steps for preservation to go beyond that. You bring alot more food than I do as well.

This is a great channel! I'm planning a kayaking trip down the Devils River in Texas. No ground fires allowed so we are gonna be pretty much mountain-housing it for 5 days. A lot lighter than your setup, but I can tell you from experience that even the 2 serving meals sometimes just aren't enough. Snacks are a MUST!!! Love the videos!!

Eggs last for two weeks on the counter. Most Europeans don't ever refrigerate eggs. Don't blanch them, the shells have a protective skin, blanching is probably worse than just leaving them as-is. In fact, European countries aren't allowed to wash the eggs because of that. Source: I've had chickens for over a decade.
@1984kylea
@1984kylea 2 жыл бұрын
Doesn't that only apply (eggs on the counter) if they've never been put in the fridge? Since most of us buy from a grocery store where they are already cold I thought we had to keep them cold.
@67HuntAway

If eggs are washed they need refrigeration. If the " bloom" is left on you can leave them on the counter.
@andrewb4984

Agreed. No need to blanche eggs. They will keep just fine. I've had eggs on the morning of day 5 many times and there were no digestive problems at all.

I get eggs right out of the grocery store and often leave them out in summer temps for upwards of a week. I live on the river from March to December and have eggs every day.

Being gluten free for legit health reasons, my camp food list is extremely simple since _none_ of the stuff made for task - like _any_ dehydrated meal - or that most people would bring will work. Instant oatmeal Frozen pre-cooked Brat's or Canadian Bacon for the first day or two. GF Protein bars (lots of those) Hard salami Carrots Dried fruit. Trail mix Beef Jerky. Lots of beef jerky I drink tea rather than coffee since it is a lot less hassle and cleanup. I despise spending time on my camping vacation doing dishes.

I think it's a great idea. You still won't want the meat to hang around for long once it's thawed, but sounds like a great way to avoid a mess in your pack too!

I just wrap my egg carton in bubble wrap and put them in a hand carry bag with bread or chips. Just need to be cognizant of where they are and you'll be fine. I've done this multiple times on multiple portage trips and never broken an egg.

@PaddleTV
@PaddleTV 3 жыл бұрын
That's a huge trip! Very cool! Due to the length of the trip, and the potential for rough water, this is definitely more of a 'sea kayak' trip. I would strongly recommend taking a sea kayaking course too, as you'll be getting into some exposed and remote water.

Incredibly unimaginative menu. Packaged freeze-dried is fine but there are alternatives, with pasta or rice, pesto and nuts. There are outstanding Indian meal packets that are awesome for camping. For breakfast, try dehydrated apple sauce with cereals. Houmous and bagels? Bagels don't squish. How about learning to bake bread, even flat bread on the fire. Dehydrated eggs. Where's the camping spice rack? Where's the coffee? We've done all this and more, and makes for great meals. Maybe this is the difference between doing it yourself versus having an outfitter do it for you.

You're right in that there's endless possibilities for backcountry cooking. Unfortunately, it can be overwhelming for some, and it keeps a lot of people from even trying multi day trips. This video was designed to provide some foundational information... but maybe I should have mentioned how much more creative you can get. You'd enjoy these camp cooking videos with Chef Corso - a classically trained chef who has dedicated himself to creating backcountry meals that 'elevate the experience'. I'm hoping to have him join me for some videos at some point soon... kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYCsppVoe8-Wqtk

Seems dumb to be thawing frozen steaks on day one. While frozen they keep the beer, and everything else cold. Thaw the poultry first, if you must, since it doesn't tolerate warmer temperatures and save the steaks for day three.
@UguysRnuts

I use dry ice to freeze everything HARD before embarking, including a few bottles of Gatorade, which due to it's sodium content, will stay colder longer than mere frozen water. This allows me cold milk, etc. for a full five days.
