Have you ever had the desire to put a trolling motor on your canoe?? Well you found the right video! This mount has been on our pelican canoe for over a decade and it works great! It's simple, cheap, and effective. I have been appreciating the canoe more and more recently because it allows you to fish on water you otherwise couldn't with a larger boat. The trolling motor gives you the freedom to travel farther without tiring out!

*Great little trolling motor **enjoyable.fishing** recommend had it hooked up to my 15 foot old town canoe and it pushed it pretty good with me and my son (220 pounds each).*

Really great and underrated tip on using the quick-release clips for the battery. Great build overall, saved the video so I can make mine up the same way. Thanks!

Thank you for your video . I use to have a setup, much like yours , and it works fine. You mentioned the square back a couple of times and didn't seem to be a fan of it . I prefer the square back . I just put an extension off the throttle control to bring it up by my side, next to my waist . For fishing purposes, I prefer the motor in the back instead of along the side of me . I run a very small down rigger at times, which I run off the side . This helps reduce interference or intanglement between the two. Great point about the battery cable hookup . Thank you . Have fun, Sir .

Your mount is set up very nice. I almost bought one of those flat back canoes, but then I thought about the discomfort too. I really appreciate you telling that the boat becomes a motorized vehicle after you put a trolling motor on it. I would have gotten pulled over. Thanks!

We found out the hard way about getting the canoe registered with an electric motor on it. NY state is picky about things like that. Have fun be legal. I am an unpaid associate of the Outdoorsman Channel.

Thanks for letting me know. I don't know how picky they are in Ohio, so I will definitely ask them what I need to do to be legal first. For now I will just use the oars. 🙂

If you are on a small pond probably not a big deal. If you go on a lake with state police boats or a "navigable waterway" it could be a problem. The department of motor vehicles in my state is pretty clear about it. We got stopped by the water police when the outdoorsman was much younger. They could have thrown the book at us but only gave us a ticket for not having a horn/whistle. There are a bunch of other things you need like an anchor, signalling device (whistle) etc. Good luck.

@@joesilverbliss1721 Thank you so much. I just bought the canoe about a month ago and thought it would be fun to add a motor. I was planning to take it on our local reservoirs like Charles Mill or Pleasant Hill lake.

I have a very similar looking canoe, if not the same (Pelican Explorer DLX) and had issues using a mount that was secure enough since the canoe had such thin and shallow gunwales. Using a piece of wood like yours in the video (looks like a 1x4 size) permanently drilled to the canoe and securing the motor mount on that would definitely solve my issue. Just a question, what size of screws did you use?
@joesilverbliss1721
@joesilverbliss1721 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I just saw your question. Stainless steel wood screws were used. I don't recall the length but I am guessing at least 2" or 2.5"long. You need to pre drill the wood. That thing is solid. It hasn't moved ever and you can lift the canoe with it. So I think wood penetration should be at least 1.5". I don't recall the screw size. I would go bigger as long as you predrill. I am a contributor to the outdoorsman channel. Good luck. Joe

great video!, what angle did you put your mount at ? (the one fixed to the canoe)
@joesilverbliss1721
@joesilverbliss1721 3 жыл бұрын
Hi just saw this. The angle was ergonomically what felt good. It depends on your canoe. Be careful not to make it too close to the seat to create a pinch point for your hands. I think I put it on the canoe and either marked the wood or used and angle gauge. A miter saw was used to cut the wood. I am an associate of the outdoorsman channel. Good luck with your project. Use stainless screws and predrill when attaching to the canoe

Yes, there is what he did was to install the board square to the side of the canoe not the center line of the canoe. I was thinking it's not a bad idea but do it the opposite way that would push your handle forward a few extra inches.

Did you extend the connector cables? What did you use? Thanks
@joesilverbliss1721
@joesilverbliss1721 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. We did extend the cables. The size (wire gauge) of the cables depends on the length of extension and how many amps your motor draws on max power. These cables were soldered together and heat shrink tubing was put over the connections. If your motor draws less than 20amps an inexpensive choice for wire is 12AWG outdoor low voltage wire sold by the foot at home Depot or Lowe's. It is twin cord like lamp cord all black. You should use red and black markers or battery clips. I am a contributing associate of the Outdoorsman Channel. You may also find something at an auto parts store or Walmart for the battery clips
