Pretty sure that was the union dam. Largest dirt dam in NS. Had a 5 mile headwater that was used to upflow Malay falls. The portage was around Ragged falls. Have been in this area for years.

I think NSP put this dam in the 20s to 30s. You can still see the tracks that dump cars ran on pulled by horses. I don't know why it was abandoned as it was a large source of green power. Sheet Harbour history may have some info.@@davegreene4100

Snow and rapids mix just fine. Once you start through a challenging stretch, you could not tell the difference between 2 C and 30 C. You sweat a tiny bit more at 30 C. Just a bit. No matter the outside temp, snow, rain, splash from the wave train, wet feet from lining the boat,,, almost all the wet near your skin is from sweat.
@Sailor376also
@Sailor376also 3 жыл бұрын
There are two basic tenets to read and run rapids. First, of primary importance,, follow the water. The river knows perfectly where the deep channel is and most of the water will head for that deep channel. Look for the foam direction from an exposed stick or rock. If it is raining the rain speckles can be seen moving left or right, the weed below the canoe will be stretched out in the direction of the flow, leaves floating on the surface,,, any tiny hint that shows where the water is flowing. Follow the water. The second tenet is normally think in terms of cutting to the inside of a corner. Tree snags are hidden around the next bend on the outside of the curve, in the fast water,, and can be very difficult to not get sucked in. This is in contradiction to the first tenet,, so this is not an always. The third is,, do not change your mind at the last moment. Straighten the bow striaght down the current and paddle hard. The bow is pointed inthe correct direction. You are not broadside to the current. (a boat breaker) And if you are going to make it through a bad place,,, you are MUCCH more likely to get through straight ahead,, with a couple of linear scratches. Exactly what you did when you had to rock for and aft to get the boat through that drop. Bow on,,, go for it. Turn sideways will never be better.

Nice bit of river! Maybe a little more bow weight for running down stream, it keeps the stern from being pushed about. just put the pack ahead of the thwart.
@NorthernScavenger
@NorthernScavenger 3 жыл бұрын
Agree that having extra weight in the front would have been smart for the lake travel but as a solo paddler in whitewater, I've found that having the weight in the middle of the boat helps with maneuverability around all the rocks we have in our rivers.

I've often wondered why you guys seem to paddle without any flotation in your canoes... The rigging is there for front/rear flotation bags.
@NorthernScavenger
@NorthernScavenger 3 жыл бұрын
That is a good point Alan, though we have yet to sink an Esquif Canyon. We have our spray decks if we were to anticipate the whitewater to be extra beefy.
@alankaye4382
@alankaye4382 3 жыл бұрын
@@NorthernScavenger True. To me running a canoe without flotation is like not wearing a life jacket. Even with a spray skirt, if you go over in big water, river or lake, you could find yourself with a canoe heading for the bottom. With flotation bags, even if your canoe gets swamped you can usually still keep it upright and muscle it to shore if you have enough water depth. It's like saying you expect your rain coat to keep you from drowning.
