I bought that new in 2002 after shooting film for 30 years. If I recall correctly it was $7200-7300 USD! My experience wasn't quite as enjoyable as yours. Moiré was usually present in repeating patterns, and it was really noisy with any low light exposures longer than 10 seconds. I convinced a resort’s out of state ad agency to shoot digital since I had just bought the beast, even though they selected me based on my film portfolio. I shot tethered to my Apple laptop using the Canon software, because that's all there was. The computer Kernal Panic crashed while the art director was looking at it, all while twilight was fading. I sold it as soon as the 1Ds was available and jumped ship. I felt that was already an improvement. Then went through all the 5D series as they were announced. Loving my R5’s nowadays. A positive for the 1D is that the latest Lightroom Classic renders my DNG files from that camera WAY better than the OG Canon software did. That’s been my main reason to always shoot raw. I can revisit older files and usually get much better results from reprocessing. It would probably be better with current glass too. Thanks for your modern perspective. It’s good to see it through another person’s fresh eyes.

This was my first 1D camera. Loved it. Was sad when my teachers found out I was using this camera for my senior portfolio that they told me to get a new camera right away. Should have kept it and never told them what I was using. I've been moving a step up each time since and currently with the 1DX. Loved each and every one of them. The III was the best jump of them all. Wish I had the 1DX II for the better video. Enjoy it while you can with the batteries it has.

I’m so glad that someone is getting excited about old DSLRs today. Makes me want to pick up my 1Ds mkII again to shoot. I noticed you wanting a split prism focusing screen, and it’s actually one of the few modern cameras (film or digital) that has optional factory split prism screen. You want the EC-B screen, quite a rare option as it sacrifices spot metering capability on a camera with incredible AF, but they are more readily than the chargers. Also worth mentioning there are some real hit and miss issues on those third party battery charging ports. I had to modify my battery very carefully as bending a pin would be catastrophically expensive. Irony is they are essentially just a sealed set of 8x1.25 AA size batteries inside each of those NP-E3 batteries, if you feel brave I believe the EOS-1nRS uses the same battery with a different end plate, and also came with a AA battery caddy which might make a good alternative way of powering first and second gen 1D series cameras.

I just discovered your channel after watching you with Omar Gonzalez. I first owned the Kodak DCS 520 camera. The color was great on it, but the batteries were enormous and file size very small. I then coughed up to buy a used Canon 1D 4.1MP body for $2,400 in 2003. For me, it was a life changing. I was able to get great work and an autofocus system that worked well.

I am fairly new to Canon Digital. My first DSLR was, and I, still own the Nikon D200 which is also CCD. Short version, I bought a Sony a6000 then a Sony A7II mirrorless. Loved the tech and the small size. Then my employer at the time supplied me a Canon 5DMKIV, I quickly got used to it, fell in love with L glass and the ergonomics! Bought my own 5dIV and I came across a 1DsMKIII. The 1Ds MKIII blows me away, it is my favorite digital camera. The colors are just great to me! Yes, the camera body is a joy to hold and operate. I am going to stockpile parts just to get more life out of it when the time comes. So happy to have found this channel!!! I have yet to find other photographers that understands how great the old Canon DSLR’s are still.

I remember way back when, I was living in Charlotte, NC and Canon had a real nice gathering one evening with refreshments where they showed off their new products and the 1D was the showcase item. I remember the very large prints they had on display from the 1D and I was in awe. I really, really wanted one but I couldn't afford the price point back then. I had just started a new job and also went through a break-up that left me in a financial hole for a while. I had to wait a while before I eventually picked up an Olympus E-1. It wasn't until the Canon 1D MKIIn came out that I could finally afford a Canon flagship body. I've been rocking Canon cameras ever since for my professional work. I still prefer my Oly gear for my personal stuff but there's no question Canon had huge advantages with its bodies and lenses, though. I wish I could have gotten the CCD model of the 1D series. That would have been awesome. Back then, we didn't know CCD was going to be a thing in the years ahead. But I did notice that I never liked the colors from CMOS sensors near as much as those from CCDs.
@OneMonthTwoCameras2 жыл бұрын
I love this story. Thank you for sharing. It really is wild how CCD has become a thing, isn't it? I suppose it is inevitable that with the success of a universal like CMOS, everything would start to look the same and that is where CCD has now become so valuable as a differentiator. But rest assured CMOS will become exotic at some point in the future and we'll all be pining for an old Sony :P

Thank you for the video. As per my observations; the yearning for older model DSLRs are getting louder and louder these days. I bought the last iteration of this APS-H DSLR Canon 1D Mark IV fourteen months ago which has a CMOS sensor. It has been my dream camera since long. Naturally got it used however, it had exactly the same shutter count that the vendor (B&H) claimed. It was 42k. If things go well, this camera should give service to a hobbyist wildlife shooter like me for many years. I love it and won’t ever sell it. Needless to mention; I’m never going mirrorless due to its EVF-lag, ergonomics and poor battery life. As per my rating; Canon 1DIV is superior to even 1dxIII and R3 in some ways. Because, its focal length reaches out 30% more than those two cameras. Its burst rate of 10 fps is good enough for me. The IQ is great due to its large pixels which would translate to approximately 27 mp on a full-frame sensor. Large enough pixels to produce clear images which the camera actually does. That’s why, I’ve recently resolved for myself to use only APS-H and FF DSLRs for my wildlife and landscape photography purposes. Thanks again.

It must _kill_ camera manufacturers that there are so many "is this camera relevant today" videos that basically say, "Yes, this is fantastic and you don't need the latest." The moment I saw your title, I knew it 's another GAS induced review. But this is cool. I have not seen someone so passionate about old camera gear with CCD sensors from the early 2000s. I still have my 5D MkIV which is the last DSLR from Canon before it has gone mirrorless. I am intending to hold on to it until it (or I) dies. Its used price has come down quite a bit. It still produces superb images and skin tones. Pairing it with the 135mm L lens, the results can be magical.

I loved my Canon 1D. I used it for weddings a long time ago. Fun fact about the camera is that the sensor was actually made by Panasonic.
Have been looking out for one of these for the past few years - not many for sale over here in Australia! Started out with the 300D and then went to a 1Ds Mark II which was out of this world. Still have it - and it still holds its own surprisingly well to all but some of the latest mirrorless offerings (ergonomics are still king, though). Hopefully I'll see a 1D come up for sale at some point; really keen to see what my glass will do with that CMOS sensor!

They’re actually very hard to find here in the states as well. I totally lucked out.

Here's how I got mine Go to eBay and type in "Canon 1D" and save that search, as well as a few variations of it, like "Canon EOS 1D" or "Canon 1D Digital" and you will get emails alerting you when stock becomes available. I find one appears every three months. Good luck! BE SURE to change your defaut location to worldwide as this will help, and set your filter from "best match" to "newly listed."

You've put me into trouble dear but I like it! I have my Canon's R5 & R6 locked and keep using this 1D original and a Fujifilm S5 pro the last months. Which sensor do you prefer between 1D, S5 pro and kodak ccd's like the one in Olympus E1? Also an interesting ccd comparison is between the aps-h size sensors found in Canon 1D & Leica M8! Which colors you like best? 1D's sensor is sourced from Panasonic. Keep up the good work

Haha! I know this feeling. If I had to choose one sensor, it would be the Kodak but specifically in the Leica M8. It is something special. But the 1D, S5 Pro and E1 will never leave my collection.

Hello😁, I completely agree with you, it's a great camera, I own two, one of which belonged to the American photographer Roy Stuart, I would never part with it because I love their rendering, for 4mpx it is exceptional, the CCD sensor gives a particular image quality, you should not increase the ISO too much because of the noise but in daylight, it is very effective, I love taking portraits with a 50mm f1.4, thank you for your video which highlights this vintage and exceptional camera.😁👍🙏

Wooo! This is sooo tempting..., but considering the weight of the system... I guess I should buy an ND8 filter for my Pentax K-7 (Some call it as one of the most "film-like" digital cameras, may be because of the Sumsung CMOS sensor... the infamous high iso noise...) AE mode: dial to the sensitive priority (Sv) and choose ISO 1250 (the sweet spot, not 800 nor 1600) since you want to have THE noise from Pentax K-7. I used the Kodak branded digital ccd cameras with Canon ef mount before canon released this. They were very limiting due to the 3mp resolution. For serious work I still shot slide film and scanned it to 40mp. Digital cameras are only now catching up to what I was doing with slide film in 1999.

@danlee18112 жыл бұрын
@@yew108 Hi Yew, bit of an open question, but in my experience The d70s is a great image maker, it has a weak AA filter, and can shoot at 1/8000th sec. also he D40, small and great, both 6mp, both have simple menu systems wich I like, nothing to mind boggling.. D200 semi Pro beefier, more complex, but still easy to use, also weatherseald. You won't go wrong with any of these, especially with a 35mm f1. 8 prime.. I've tried others d80, d100, d50, d40x, d3000, but the previous mentioned are a bit special (in my opinion). As mentioned in previous reply, the d1x great image maker, big and heavy, dated battery system, but still super quality. D2hs, one off sensor, very very unique, I own two and wouldn't part with them. Hope this helps, all very cheap now, so no big loss if not for you. Regards Dan UK.

The Nikon D1 is slower, insanely slow in RAW and Single mode and has worse IQ but I think the files are still good, the colors are pretty good and the files are sharp. The Nikon D1 was older, it came out in '99, the direct competitor to the Canon EOS 1D was the Nikon D1H which was released on Feb 2001. The D1H solved all the issues of the D1 and used the same sensor but has a smaller resolution compared to the Canon, that's why the Nikon D1X (released at the same time) with its 6 mp sensor was more popular and sold more units than the D1H.
