Canon 1DS mark II

I just inherited this camera and the EOS 1 Mark II N. Both are good cameras for various reasons. I have a couple of great film cameras and points and shoot digital so the cameras are a nice entry into digital.

To be brutally honest if I wanted to do serious video I'd get a Canon EOS C200. I own a Canon 5D Mark II. After I bought the 5DII I eneded byuing the 1DS Mark II as a backup. How much do I like the 1DS Mark II... I bought another 1DS Mark II body. The 5DII is better in low light, but the 1DS Mark II takes me back to the 1970s when the camera bodies I used were built like tanks.

I already own a canon 6d but I've always lusted after a pro body. I bought one of these yesterday, one owner from new (he paid £5300 plus vat when he bought it) and it's in great condition. It cost me the grand sum of £200 and I'm stoked with it. It's built like a tank and I'm really looking forward to giving it a good test in the coming weeks. Another thing, I would like to thank you for saying iso, not i ess o, like all Americans do. It really gets on my nerves, after all we say laser and radar as a complete word, not split into letters and they are also acronyms. So for this reason I'll forgive you for being a Nikon user :)) Subscribed :)

Thanks for the review. I am wondering what firmware version you have installed and what the largest CF card you can format with this camera, if you know. I recently bought one in great condition however, it did not have the last firmware version installed, 1.1.6. As you mentioned, Canon no longer supports this body. They have also taken all the firmware updates off site including the last version. Canon will not send the firmware file to me, the only way to have the firmware updated is to send it to Canon and have them do it... at a cost. Currently with 1.1.4 firmware, the camera will only format cards under 2GB in size.

Could you make a video how to setup 1DS MI or MII with manual lens. When I mount manual lens with adaptor on 1DS MII. It give me error 01. Thanks.

I don't know much about Canon but is 1Ds and 1Dx different and how?

The 1Ds series was more of a studio oriented camera with resolution and immense detail at its side. Meawhile, the 1D series was more of a speed oriented camera, and had subsequently less resolution to meet those speeds. Both were built to the same level of build quality and shared chassis's, but the 1Ds line was more expensive overall. However, in late 2011, Canon would announce their newest flagship, the 1DX which merged the speed and versatility of the 1D Mark IV, and the high resolution, full-frame studio oriented 1Ds Mark III into a single camera known as the 1DX.

Is there any difference on how big you can get an image printed, from the eos 1Ds mark ii and from another full frame camera that is newer? Or is the raw file just the same? Appreciate it if you have an idea about this! I have this camera, and I'm wondering if it will hold up for a job that needs the photos to be printed aprox. 2 meters big. Or if I should rent a 5D mark ii or iii.

Hi. When it comes to printing large sensor resolution is King. So yes you would get a better poster size print from a camera with more resolution. having said that the 4mp from the 1ds2 to the 5d mk2 isn't huge. Also with careful upscaling of the image in Photoshop you can work magic. I have had d2x 12.4mp files published in huge prints which looked fab.

Canon eos 1Ds series are full-frame. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS-1Ds While the Canon eos 1D series is APS-H.

I had this model for more than 5 years, however, I still haven't found a way to change the former owners name in the system using the EOS Utility program. The program state, when the camera is connected, that the camera isn't recognized and I'm unable to go any further. It's not a huge problem, but it is kind of annoying. If anyone have a solution to this problem, perhaps alternative software, it would be highly appreciated. Kind regards.

You will need a IEEE 1394 card (and cable) and Windows XP setup to be able to do it. If you don't have old hardware, an old laptop with built-in IEEE 1394 port is still not that hard to find from eBay for dirt cheap price. You may also get a IEEE 1394 card and run a VM on your modern PC. Some additional options can only be changed when connected to IEEE 1394 as well.

Hi, you can ONLY change the name and have access to some other items/functions in EOS Utility if you are using the FIREWIRE port ONLY...i repeat:- ONLY THE FIREWIRE PORT WILL GIVE "FULL ACCESS" The USB port i think was just for direct printing to printers etc. although it will be recognised by your computer and EOS Utility will fire up with the USB cable connected, however it WON'T give you access to the USER NAME CHANGE, only the FIREWIRE port can DO THIS.

Sensor size. The 1D, !d Mark II and up to 1D Mark IV are in fact APS-H sensors with a crop factor of 1.3 The 1D"S" models are full frame. Remember that the 1D and 1DS can only use EF lenses. You will damage either series with the EF-S.

Mk3 3 has a much better screen which makes life easier I would recommend the mk3.
