Just as an FYI - the mk 1 version has a filter over it which will reduce sharpness a bit. Granted, the mk2 lens is much better but still it would have been better to ditch the front filter.

Hi Julia, in 2019 do you think the canon 35mm 1.4 ii is top of the 35mm line in comparison to sigma and other brands, in regards to dependability, build, etc?
@TheGreatLoco4 жыл бұрын
Hi Julia, would you recommend me the Canon 35mm 1.4L, the II, the Sigma 24-35mm 2.0 Art or the 40mm 1.4 Art for a primary wide angle lens?
@SergSpace2 күн бұрын
Pictures look unnatural in this blog. You must be didn't compensate shadows with light against the sun (light on background) and pulled them in Lightroom. So they look like film camera low quality newspaper images with lots of noise, hazy, not sharp at all. Sorry.
@JervyHou6 жыл бұрын
I was in a similar situation where I had to choose between a Sigma 35 1.4 and the Canon 35 1.4 MKII. Went with the MKII after noticing how much sharper and consistent with focusing it was compared to the Sigma. Also, autofocus in video with the MKII is super quiet and buttery smooth, with no noticeable focus breathing. I noticed some comments about not liking the sharper bokeh. Yeah, it definitely is sharper but it tends to be a problem if your background is too busy to begin with. 35mm is a trickier focal length to compose and blur out backgrounds with than say a 50 or 85... and if the bokeh looks ugly, it's probably better to stop down to get everything in focus, adjust your distances between yourself/subject/background or just pick a different background altogether.
@juliatrotti6 жыл бұрын
You made some really great points, I completely agree! If the bokeh isn't working for me, looks too busy, etc, I would personally move my subject further away from the background to blur it out a little bit more as you mentioned.

Love your style, Julia, though I prefer the 35mm mark i to the mark ii because it seems to have a bit more "character" than the newer lens... I prefer the softer bokeh of the older lens, too. Thank you for sharing.

The 35L mk II is easily my favorite lens...and I own most of the other Canon L’s outside of the superzooms. The more you use it the more it will grow on you. Just stumbled across your channel btw! Very nice videos! Keep it up!

Hey Julia, I'm in the market for a 35mm prime for my Black Magic Pocket 4K. I noticed the MKi is selling used for $600 US, while the MKii is selling new for $1600. For a cinematographer, would you say it's worth the price difference for the ii?

It looks like you have UV filters on lenses. If it's not high end like B&W filters, could it be the reason why version (1) is not as sharp as v II? I got Canon 24mm f/1.4 (II). Do you think 35mm f/14 will make a difference?
@kirk08315 жыл бұрын
interesting!! I love 35mm first version, it seems version II also very compelling. Can you also compare 85mm 1.2 II vs the latest 85 1.4 IS?

This has been my struggle with the 35L II since I got it. It's clinical and lacks character compared to the original 35L. I even loved the way the 35L OG flared. They've over corrected the lens at the sacrifice of character. I may retire the 35L II and go back to the original.
@ccoppola825 жыл бұрын
PersianNight I know this is a 3 month old comment, but I totally agree. I just put my 35L on my Eos 1v after a while of shooting my Leica and I agree completely about the clinical look of the new version vs the character/imperfection of the original. Plus, I’m always partial to small lenses. Biting Sharpness is only super important to me in landscape photography, in which case I’ll bring my hasselblad out on a tripod.
@nickathos74283 жыл бұрын
The new versions are optimized for digital thats why they have way too many elements and lens coatings which make the image look flat and lacking character
@Furudal6 жыл бұрын
Hi Julia, I liked your photos with the 35 mm f/1.4 a lot! The lens is not in the budget right now but you inspired me to play around a little more with my old Canon 28 mm f/1.8. It goes in a similar direction and is not as wide as the 24 mm. Keep up the great videos! Furudal
@michonn26 жыл бұрын
The main reason to go with 1.4 is the bokeh which looks much better on first version and sharpness which look better on second verion but to see the difference you have to view your poctures on 1:1 And yes chromatic aberrations are easy to fix but green fringe is still pain to remove. I would say if the price difference would be only 300 dollars I would go with second version but 35% more price for second version is not an option for me.
@hemidesign6 жыл бұрын
I have both lenses and looking at the photos with naked eyes, it is impossible to see any difference in quality from the photos.. now the new version has some advantages, which they are: sharper in wide aperture, weather proof, almost no distortion, faster focus, no CA, and closer focus.
@emptyskullify6 жыл бұрын
Kill me for saying this but I actually prefer the MK1 over the MkII, simply because the bokeh from the Mk1 has wayy more character, which is what defines your style of photography. Not saying the mkII is bad but just has a different feel to it (resembling the Sigma 35mm f1.4art). But still extremely sharp. Awesome video and comparison tho!!!
@juliatrotti6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you there - the mk1 definitely has a character/magic about it. They are both completely different lenses in my opinion! Both with their own pros and cons!

Hi Julia, I noticed that you purposely don't put lens hood on your lens but you tried to cover the direct sunlight going into your lens by your hand. Is it because it would be easy for you to include lens flares on your photos if you wanted to?
@juliatrotti6 жыл бұрын
Yep! I love capturing lens flares in my photos, but sometimes catching focus is a little hard with all the sun streaming into the lens. So I use my hand to shield the sun, get focus, then I move my hand slightly before taking photos to be able to get those lens flares :D

Julia, do u find your mk 1 sharp at 1.4 at the center? Mine is so soft and fuzzy. Af is inconsistent Usable at f1.8 only. Is it Normal or I got a bad copy?
@juliatrotti6 жыл бұрын
Hmm that's a little strange. Mine is definitely sharp at the center at 1.4. Maybe you should try taking photos in a controlled environment and really take your time with getting focus to double check if it is the lens? For example just place a mug or object on a table with lots of natural light and see if you can get sharp photos that way. If not, maybe you could get your lens checked?
@polanialmoni62746 жыл бұрын
it is sharp but fuzzy, need to be sharpen in post to be acceptably sharp. at 1.8 it is sharp though. thanks for the comment!

The sharper bokeh i a trade-off for the mark ii, but the shorter focusing distance kinda makes up for it. Gives it the ability to blur the background more.

Great video. I love my mark 1 too. Its been a legendary lens for quite a long time. IMHO The added sharpness at wide open, CA and Distortion corrected on the mark II isn't worth the price difference. Id probably use that money on other glass. But will surely upgrade to mark II when the right time and if the budget permits. As of now im keeping my old 35mm.
@juliatrotti4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah I agree, if you have a fairly new/still in working condition mark 1 it's still a great lens and to be honest I miss it from time to time! Mine was unfortunately dying thanks to many years of heavy, heavy use haha so upgrading was an easy choice to make at the time 😄

Thanks for the comparisons Julia :) You we're pretty much the 35mm go to for this review. May I ask why you shot at f2 instead of wide open? You usually shoot wide open and adjust the shutter speed. Also: do you use a top end UV filter or do you see it affecting image quality? I hear pros and cons on UV filters.

But Canon 35Lii at wide open is sharp and no CA.

Thank you! I shot those portraits as part of an editorial I was shooting, I usually shoot client work at f2 - but it was my first portrait shoot on the mk2 so I wanted to include it! I've done another shoot now which I will release soon of portraits taken at 1.4 :D And yes I use a UV filter and it doesn't affect the quality of my images! I don't use super high end ones, and I don't use the cheapest there is, just something in the middle and it works fine!

I like getting lens flares in my photos, but sometimes the lighting is too harsh/bright so it makes focusing hard. By holding my hand up, it works as a lens hood so I can focus, but then I just move my hand slightly so I can still capture the lens flare :)

I usually press the shutter as soon as the focus is hit where I want it to be - sometimes that's when the noise stops and sometimes the lens can still be moving but I can see it's at the focus point, so I press the shutter :)

Which lens do you prefer in terms of their "looks"? From my observations on the photos posted on Flickr, images from MKII look sharper, crisper and more modern and have 3-dimensional pop, whereas the images from MKI look more classic and have a somewhat softer (film like) look. Although sometimes I like the crisper images from MKII, I generally prefer the classic look of MKI. I mainly take photos of my family. Do you also notice the differences I mentioned? Any thought or personal preference? Thanks!
@juliatrotti6 жыл бұрын
Yes! I completely agree with you. It's why I'm keeping both lenses and sometimes bringing them both to shoots. I feel like the mk2 would be better suited for weddings and client jobs where people are after clear, crisp images. Whereas the mk1 would still be perfect for personal shoots as I love the classic almost film like look it produces in the photos!

I hired the 24-70 Mark 2 some time ago and was pretty impressed with it.I live in South Africa so these things are pretty expensive, bottom line I can only by one or the other.Is the Canon 35mm L mark 2 fast at focusing?
@PersonaN007Grata6 жыл бұрын
Do you find yourself using the 35mm focal length a lot on your 24-70? And do you shoot in low light? I love my 24-70 II and I would not give that up for a 35 1.4. The focal length is just too convenient. And it's prime sharp. Awesome color and contrast. Even with just f/2.8, I can shoot at 70mm and get really decent portraits with creamy bokeh. Personally, I would like to get a 70-200 2.8 IS II for portraits. I find longer focal lengths more flattering on the subject. And compressing the background makes for beautiful blur. Have you thought about 35 f2? Or Sigma Art? For sure, Sigma doesn't give up much if at all in sharpness compared to the 35 1.4 II but focus speed and accuracy is probably only 80-90% of the Canon. The Canon 35 f2 is probably one of the most popular 35mm because it performs admirably compared to the original 1.4 minus a stop of light. But as short as 35mm are, wider the aperture, easier to create bokeh. That extra stop might be worth it.

Julia, how do you want to protect your new lens against sun screen and the like? - Btw., which sunscreen do you use in the "harsh light" of Australia? - I am always very careful about my lenses. But I have to protect myself against the sun; even in Germany :)
@juliatrotti6 жыл бұрын
I use a UV filter to protect my lenses, in case I knock it into something, hopefully only the UV filter will break instead of the lens! As for the sun, camera equipment doesn't really need any protection from that :)
@thepirateshoots6 жыл бұрын
Julia, thank you for your answer. My question was unclear; should have been "which sunscreen / sun cream do you use (for your skin) and aren't you afraid it will do any harm to the camera 'leather'?" Last year I rented a car in South Africa, it was brand new. I used a lot of sun cream and after 3 weeks, you could see a lot of stains in the car interior... So I avoid suncream, when photographing with my own cam... But maybe there is a better sun cream, sun oil available. Especially in Australia, where you would need tons of that!

Hi Julia, i absolutely love your videos, they are so good without getting boring. Its like equal amount of theory and practical in a class :) . I am an amateur photographer , I have CANON 77D. I am looking to buy Canon 35mm mk2. Please let me know if it will be a good buy

Luckily, you didn't have to drive 4 hours round trip to pick yours up Julia lol. They didn't have this lens at all in my city but after I bought and tested it, the trip was well worth it.

Do you like this lens for large group shots?

Yes! I always use it for family shots at a wedding and a large group shot of everyone at the wedding too :)
