I'm an enthusiast nature photographer using Canon DSLRs for last thirteen years. With my new love Canon 5D Classic I have shot for last three weeks. I think now I can express my feelings about it. In fact, I fell in love with it long before buying it. Now I’ve used it for landscape images, the main purpose of buying it, for 21 days. I can confidently certify; it presented me the treasure I so earnestly desired - film look in images. They are little soft compared to modern cameras that I already own for some time however, the subtle and smooth feel in images with vibrant colors is the output I never got from other DSLR bodies. It wasn’t possible either because those aren’t made that way. Don’t get me wrong, those are also great cameras undoubtedly (5DII, 5DIII, 7D and 70D). But when I relax and watch the 5D Classic images, these are real classics. I was also mad for a film SLR but now, I can forget it as I already have one in 5D Classic. I do commend you for breaking a myth about resolution. Yes, it’s the basic science that bigger pixels capture more light and produce cleaner and quality images. High pixel count was the demand from ignorant photographers who bought DSLRs like popcorns from 2005-2012. Following the arrival of smartphones; those users never replaced their DSLRs and instead using their phones. Consequently, the DSLR market shrunk drastically. Now, only the professionals and serious hobbyists like me are buying cameras. Now is the time for manufacturers to get rid of the cheap gimmick and start producing real cameras again. Sony has already shown the way by introducing the 12 mp A7S III last year that has won the appreciation of users. Hope Canon and Nikon also come to their senses and produce photographers’ cameras again.

It's like that. Even Leica got up on this pixel marketing. Recently I watched footage from M10 camera. Excellent colors, but upon closer inspection, it's a pixelated mess. I watched something similar on my crop cameras. In the last camera, they increased the resolution even more.

I am happy with just one . Its good to know another person who can surely say the transition was worthwhile. Its hard to explain what film days were like. The transitional golden era was an amazing experience for me. I just don't get that level of rush no more, maybe getting old.

@@SuperSlackOff Yeah, being the first consumer FF DSLR, it was a worthwhile purchase. But my bottom line was the Nikon D3. Now that I have spent two decades each with film and digital, this round of transition into MILC isn't that much a rush. 🙂

Few know that the 5D classic's "Neutral" profile has a beautiful look to it, with incredible reproduction of nature and skin tones. I stick to this 95% of the time, and keep a RAW file just incase the highlights are blown. If you don't plan on using the JPGs at all, push the sharpness up ALL THE WAY - this won't affect RAW output, but on the small screen previews will look better! on my 7d, neutral looks "flat" - on the 5d, it's "pastel" ;)

Once i had a 5d classic but i sold it and with plus money i bought a 1st generation a7 (because of focus peaking and different perspective using the tilting screen -vintage lenses-). Its amazing but none of cameras can produce that taste of images what 5d classic can, so yesterday i bought one (140eur) and very happy with it :)

Exactly, I recently went to the camera shop myself and found 5d classics being fixed up and sold at a good price , the seller told me that there is still enough demand for them in the market. Your 5d will work great with that lens . I used one for a couple of days, they work great together. Also get the nifty fifty.

Another thing, most canon shooters swear by the ETTR rule. I find myself breaking this rule all the time with the 5d. I seem to get the richest colours (deep sunsets, sunlit forests) when the histogram is around the middle. These RAW files are 12 bit, and the sensor has a limited dynamic range - so think slide film when you expose for the scene! Do I want a rich sunset? then spot meter for the sky and allow the darker areas to be lost. you can always bracket if you need more range.

I had a Canon 70D before I bought this camera. Now I don’t use the 70D anywhere near as much as I use this. The pictures once take don’t require any or almost no editing if you have framed well. I mostly expose my pictures half a stop and this camera just amazes me every time.

The 5D was over engineered to capture a market segment. Glad you are enjoying yours. If you take care of it well, it will probably last forever. 70D is great for video work, so you are all covered. You dont need anymore camera.

Looking for this DSLR for a while already. Not because it's cheap. I would like to get it due to its bigger pixels that capture more light and produce nice images. Also I heard it creates a film look in images which I really yearn for.

Thx for your video! I agree with the big pixels and great tonality part, though it is not the only old low mp full frame dslr, the d700 has 12mp And 14 bit so tonality should be a bit better even. I think i am getting both 😀

@@SuperSlackOff thx alot, i have another question: is it had to micro adjust the focus points when you notice the camera back focuses on the 5D and the d700? I read that with the d700 you can do it in camera but with the 5DC you cant. thx in advance
@SuperSlackOff
@SuperSlackOff 2 жыл бұрын
@@gerben4875 it is true that you cannot micro adjust the focus on the 5D. I have no experience with the D700 but according to dpreview it does have it, it's called "AF Fine tune" . Here is how I solve it on the 5D, if I am buying a new lens, I check them until I find a sharp one, if its a Canon authorized showroom they do it for free. If I buy used, then most of the time I use a split prism focusing screen , let the AF do its work then check if the prisms are aligned if not adjust it manually with full time manual focus lenses. But in all 13 years of using this camera I only had one microadjust issue with 50mm non USM lens. So I wouldn't worry about, most lens work out of the box without issues even with adapters. If MF lens, well no trouble there either.

k but what about the repair? I just bought a used 5D and I'm hoping it will last as long as possible ... but I'm already changing my mind about the purchase because when it breaks I won't be able to repair it because repair centers certainly don't have spare parts.

The sensor will last a long time. Canon official service center will replace the shutter for you at no cost , even today. If something else breaks, it will be cheaper to buy another 5D classic. Anyone ever compared A-B between the 5D Classic against the 5D Mk II?
@SuperSlackOff
@SuperSlackOff 2 жыл бұрын
If you search youtube, you will find two videos on it. but a direct A to B comparision. From my experience 5D mark 2 if you think of technically is superior with addition of video functionality. From usability and the feel photography gives with 5D classic is totally different, every image that you gave time to looks and feels like a moment in time , has a very unique look to them thats not duable with modern tech naturally. Its very hard to explain, like driving a classic car. The imperfections of noise is like grain of film at high iso . The old age of the sensor and fat pixels gives it a certain look, the slow flap of shutter over the sensor makes a wonderful feel. You can simulate that with any modern camera with post processing or like Fuji's X-Trans and Film simulations. But these are all done in post processing. With 5D its like the best it can do with what it has, when your hardware tries so much to give you an image , its just special. Thats is why 5D is still used and collected, not used professionally but very much to enjoy.
