100% agree. I've had a 5Dmkii for past 3 years and have achieved some breathtaking images. I've had the R5 for about 3 months and to be honest I always find myself going back to the 5D. It's like a an old comfortable pair of slippers. Still an excellent camera in 2022.

I ran a 5D2 as my main camera for 10 years, I'm now onto the 5D4 which I absolutely love but there's just something that feels 'right' whenever I pick my old mk2 up. Maybe it's just the familiarity and being 'at one' with it after all these years, but it just feels right. And, DR aside as you've mentioned, I still think it's an incredibly capable camera when it comes to the actual images it produces. I also know exactly what you mean when you talk about the shooting experience, I think it's amazing how far camera tech has evolved but I also can't help feeling it's taken some of the satisfaction out of nailing situations that are technically challenging. I'd also argue that if you've only ever used mirrorless cameras with the latest versions of DPAF you're probably not developing the skills that you really should be as a photographer.

Hi Paul, yes id probably agree with you there that learning on a dslr is more beneficial, i think mirrorless really brings the advantages as soon as you throw video into the mix but the 5d ii is really special.

The old 4/3 and m4/3 sensors have an optical density of 315 dpi. The newer 350 dpi while the Canon 5D only 72 dpi (Apple Mac 1984 standard 🤣 ). In practice, if you do not make large prints, it makes no sense to take pictures more than 5mpx because it is enough even for a 4K screen. Resolutions of the order of 8-20mpx are needed only for large photos and posters.
@paulnichols393
@paulnichols393 Жыл бұрын
@@AriusNowak dpi has no relevance whatsoever to computer monitors or camera sensors, it's only a factor when we talk about printing. The way you're approaching this is unfortunately rather flawed.
@mikafoxx2717

@@AriusNowak8mp is 4k monitor resolution. How large do those big tv look sharp? Yeah, you don't need that many pixels for the real world. But in practice higher resolution also doesn't matter. Noise doesn't go up at the same enlargement, it just has more fine detail hidden in that noise.

The 5D Mk.2 looks like a good camera for most situations , and is very good value on the 2nd hand market . I got one for a friend , in what I suspect was unused condition ( seems a kit had been split up and the 24 - 105 zoom sold separately) . My friend loves this camera , and is taking excellent macro pictures with it combined with a 105 macro lens .

I bought one today. Low shutter count. No signs of use for around $300. Judging from previous comments the price may have bottomed out. My son just bought a 1Dx mark II for about $1500 with 8000 shutter count in mint condition. He shoots concerts. It will be his second rig along with an EOS R. I'm anxious to see how it performs for him.

Definitely a thumbs up for having multiple cameras, I wish more photographers would do this instead of getting stuck in one system. I've spent thousands on all the new Fuji gear, I shoot film on load of old Pentax stuff which cost me peanuts. Then 3 months ago I bought a 5D Mark II because I saw one going for £150. I haven't been able to put it down since and absolutely love the look and colours coming out of it, especially with vintage manual focus lenses. Even shooting raw, I'm seeing things in Lightroom that I just don't get with my Fuji gear, and I do love the Fuji look but this old Canon camera just has some magic about it. Can't say I've noticed any real limitations as far as dynamic range goes, although to my eyes nothing compares to film, but between digital cameras I think it's largely a myth.

Thanks Martin. I started with film SLRs in the early 90s and that is why I love the modern DSLR's. In 2022 I bought a 5D Mk1 and a Mk3 and have gotten to love them. I prefer the simplicity of the Mk1 however. I have two lenses, a 24-105 and a 70-300, which have image stabilisation and these two lenses cover my needs and my kit produces pin sharp landscape and nature shots. As for the question are these cameras still relevant today the answer is : you bet they are. They are awesome tools and using them feels like real photography. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks! Dear Martin, I am a big fan of your channel and have been following it for while now. I am more of a Nikon DSLR shooter ("advanced" amateur). I own 5 Nikon cameras: D80, D200, D700, D610 AND D7100. I have been really learning a lot from you and I love your portraits as well as your landscape photos and I am vey impressed by the way you edit these (very obvious and clear improvement on the landscape ones). I have quite a number of old Nikon lenses, mostly AF-D series (primes and zooms) and some manual focus primes (135 f3.5, 200 f4 and 300 f4.5). I just watched a video of yours about the 5D MKII and, although I am very, very happy with my Nikon gear, I would be curious to try either a 5D MKI or MKII (the colors on the your portraits using these cameras impresses me a lot!), maybe with an inexpensive nifty fifty. Anyways, sorry for the extensive comment but mostly I would like to thank you for the amazingly useful and pleasant to watch videos. All the best and Happy New Year!!!

Very nice video, Martin, you're spot on, I think! I like the more natural outcome of the 5d mark ii, too much dynamic range often gives an artificial look. I like that it's sturdy when I want that, like today I travelled and walked a lot, so I brought an APS-C instead (Nikon D5300). Also the 5d mark ii is nice with vintage glass, the Helios 44 for instance.

I just purchased a 7D with 4K clicks on it for a song. That will be my introduction to wildlife camera ( I am ambitious). I can see a 5DII, 6D, and 40D in my future. Oh my... I am sounding like a hoarder, but at these crazy low prices it is almost a crime not to scoop these up while the scooping is good. I think they'll experience a bit of a price increase in the coming years as people begin to realize that their fancy pants phones and mirror-less cameras ( I have and like these also) can be a bit too automated and lack a certain tactile fun factor about them.

Hi Martin, thanks for your informative and well considered videos. I have just bought a mark ii and I am very pleased with it. The only negative so far I have is that in Manual the iso is locked at 400. Unless there was a firmware update or a workaround I am not aware of, that seems a curious limitation. It was surely one of the main advantages of DSLRs that you had iso flexibility on each shot. Auto iso works so well on other cameras in Manual.

Hello! I too have a 5D mkii with a 105 mm lens. I want to get into wildlife side of photography but I’m in a dilemma. My 5D works well, but is still quite old with low burst fps. Higher fps is important for capturing wildlife. After seeing this, I thought of purchasing a new camera but my budget only allows me to get either a Sony a7ii (2014) with the 28-70mm kit lens OR a Sony a6100 with 55-210mm kit lens. I cannot afford anything else more than this. This new camera with kit lens would run me about the same as a sigma 150-600mm lens for my 5D. So which one would you suggest: should I keep my 5D and invest in a good telephoto lens or buy a new camera camera and try with the kit lens for now? Thanks

@@bladewarm1969 Glass is always more important than body. The sigma with a 5D is going to be much better than the aps-c witht he kit lens... And 210mm is gonna be too short most of the time. I feel like there is more...prestige?? in those than the MK1800's. ;) I live perfectly fine with my 5D2, my 6D, 70D and the first version of the EOS-M (with a firmware upgrade). :) I used to be employed as a portrait photographer. And I was handed the 5D MK2 with a 24-105 F4 L. That lens is not great. I ended up using my Sigma 24-105 F4 Art instead. But for portraits, the 5D is wonderful. Rigth now it has a EF 85 F1,8 on it. Hi Martin, im a recent subscriber and have watched many of your down to earth videos. I have really enjoyed them too. I used to own this very camera when I first got into photography, I really didn't make the most of it as not long afterwards I suffered a stroke and it took a while for me to recover from. Because of this I sold all my gear as I just couldnt cope mentally with the challenges of relearning how to use it as it was enough of a struggle learning 'life' again. If you know what I mean? However three years ago (about 6 years after my ground zero) I got into wildlife photography and a bit of landscape, mainly using a 7dmk2 and a couple of 1d bodies, which I really like. But I really miss the 5D2. So I have finally taken the plunge and ordered a low mileage body and cant wait for it to arrive! Thanks again for your excellent insight. Its much appreciated. N

In order to use them I have to fix the RF to EF adapter and then I can use them. The only disadvantage ist, that the lens + the adapter is pretty long starts getting heavy. So I am wondering if if would make any sense to buy a used 6d mark ii or a 5d mark iv to easily mount this ef lenses - cause in my understanding the picture quality is nearly the same (and I don't shoot videos at all). Would be great to receive some kind of feedback, thanks and cheers!

Just this morning I was taking inside my home some casual comparison shots (RAW) between my 5D classic, 6D, and RP, all with the 40mm pancake. The 5D I believe produces the better-looking files to my eyes; the combination of crispness along with those soft fall-off transitions between lights and shadows created a very special “pop”, something like a “medium format effect” which goes beyond color adjustments🥹. Talking about color, I can easily tune the 6D colors to match those of the 5D, however the RP’s files took me much longer to adjust, they completely different from the start. Tomorrow I will make another between the 5D/6D with the 40mm vs the RP with the awesome RF 35mm IS, maybe that will be a different story.

Hi, Martin. Sorry in advance for my english, because it's not my native language. But I have some questions. They are about 5d classic and 5d mark ii. 1) I've read in forums that they (5dc and 5d mk2) have same autofocus system. Is this true? I'm not talking about the layout, I wanna know speed differences and outer focus points accuracy. Can you share your experiences about this? (I'll pair camera with 50mm f1.8 ii or stm version) Actually all my worries are about autofocus and accuracy. Is there is differences, it that worth 100-150 dollar? 2) I had Nikon D5100 and 18-105mm kit. It was quite enough for me in autofocus speed (i know d5100 has no focus motor, lens did all the work). I never complained about autofocus and outer points accuracy. But when I pair my d5100 with Yongnuo 50mm f1.8, it was terrible. Most of the time I missed the focus, the outer focus points usually didn't work and I had to take shots with only center point. But 18-105mm was great. Have you ever tried d5100? I mean, what do you think, 5d classic (or mark 2) + 50mm would be worse or better than d5100 + 18-105mm? 3) Let me tell you about myself, then I will ask main question. I'm not the professional, I won't use my camera to make money(sometimes my friends invite me to photoshoot but it's not "work". I go for just my passion and to get experience). I usually do street and daily photography, sometimes portraits of my friends when we hangout in cafe or street. Sometimes I take photos of cars and every season I go to my granny's village where I shoot nature and landscape. Briefly, I need daily camera. I love film look but to be honest, even if I get film look straight out of camera, I'll edit my photos in Lightroom in any case. I have lots of film presets. What is your opinion? Which would better for me: 5D Classic or 5D mark 2? 5d mark 2 worth extra 150 $?
@MartinCastein
@MartinCastein Жыл бұрын
I think you should get the 5dii, the focus is exactly the same as the mark 1 but the mark ii is just an easier camera to live with for a variety of reasons, its much more refined. You will be fine with the 50mm stm on the mark ii, the focus isnt always great but it takes excellent pictures overall.

I completely agree Martin. I enjoy using the 5DM2 so much, and I also enjoy the EOSR. They’re so different in the way they operate that it takes a few minutes to adjust from one to the other if I try to mix them up. Having the R makes it really difficult to consider buying a 5DM3 or 4. I can’t see where those bodies would surpass the R. Especially when I consider how they don’t offer much over the 5DM2, either. I think I might look at getting a 1DX or 1DXM2 for the shots per second. I haven’t tried much action photography. There’s no way the 5DM2 can keep up with its 3fps! The R can do 7fps and it’s not terrible, at least when I tried it out on my dogs running around, LOL. Camera bodies are dropping in price so I might find myself with a 3rd one before long.

@@nextpicture it’s funny you say the optical viewfinder is something you miss. I actually enjoy the digital VF on the R. In fact, there isn’t much I prefer in the 5D except the top screen, rear wheel, and the mirror itself. There is something special about the mirror clunking around in a DSLR. I kind of believe that if the RF lenses were cheaper or more plentiful on the used market, I’d likely switch over completely. I go back and forth in these beliefs so if you ask me next month, I might give a different answer! But I can say this, now that I have a much better working knowledge on the R, I’m very happy with it. It’s falls short in video but I don’t use a mirrorless or DSLR camera for making videos for my channel. I use a 4k Panasonic camcorder and have zero complaints. Camcorders are overlooked in my opinion. So my camera bodies take pictures and that’s it.

@@MartinCastein you’re right of course. After Canon starts releasing newer bodies and allowing 3rd party lenses, prices will come down. The original 1DX can be had for as low as $1,000 USD here. A 1DX2 is still a bit pricey, about $2,000 or so. I can find very good 5DM4 bodies for about $1200-1500 but the best deals are on the 5D3 and 6D. Each can be purchased for roughly $400. That’s an incredible deal I think. I officially retire in just over 2.5 years so I might wait and buy a special gift for myself at that time. Or maybe I’ll just plan a 6 month long trip through Europe! I never went to “discover” myself when I was 18, so maybe I’ll do it at 52!

I have R5 and R62 and can't get the colors of my 5D2. I needed a third camera for a shoot the other day and it felt like going back to the stone age, but it just looks better. There is nothing I can do to the R5, even with the same lens that makes it look as natural as the 5D2. I just can't risk using the 5D2 because I work so much faster with the R5 and I know I got focus. There are some important moments with important people and you don't get second chances sometimes. I've been able to capture some amazing moments with a 50mm 1.2 that would have had me guessing and nervous with the 5D2. It's a shame Canon can't replicate these colors anymore. I had an R3 for a couple weeks an it did seem a bit better.

This is a great post Luke, ive often spoken of the differences when it comes to focus and certain features. It all just depends on what you are doing and the significance of it. Can you take mulitple shots or is it just a moment and then its gone. So you have to decide based on that. Ive seen many say the same things. So I think its best to stick to having all these cameras and choosing which ones to use given what you are trying to do with them.

Much of the full frame experience for non pros started with the 5D2 I believe. It was expensive, but not as a pro body. And it had video, which was a first for Canon full frames. I love picking it up for a walk in the neighbourhood. When you are used to dragging around a 1D body, the 5D series feel small and light. The 6Ds feel almost to small to get a grip on….😁 As usual, nice video, and interesting to hear your opinions on what it is that makes these classics great.

@@MartinCastein Thanks! It’s my third 1Ds Mk.II. I sold my last one this summer. It was a bit long in the tooth, and at 286 thousand actuations it was probably up for retirement. But I missed it, so when I found an ad for this one I couldn’t keep away. It is a former studio camera, used by a pro for a couple years and then stuffed away for years. It’s absolutely mint. Not even the black of the flash shoe has been worn away. I heartily recommend the three 1Ds cameras to people that are looking at the early 5D’s. The images of 1Ds and the 1Ds Mk.II has much of the same “feel” as the 5D, and the 1Ds Mk.III reminds me of the 5D Mk.II. They are bulky, and non of them has auto-ISO, something I do like about newer cameras. But they have a greatly superior autofocus than the 5D’s. And they can be found quite cheap, sometimes cheaper than the 5D’s, because of their “cult” status. It’s also worth to look at the 1D models. They have the smaller APS-H-sensors, but look phenomenal. Their main drawback compared to the 1Ds’s are slightly higher noise levels and their 1.3-crop, that makes it hard to find good wide angle alternatives. But they are fantastic for anything that moves or needs a bit extra reach. The burst rate is between 8.5 and 10 fps. My favourites are the 1D Mk.IIN and the 1D Mk.IV. I have yet to find the original 1D in good or at least decent condition. But that one is probably a bit low in resolution for even us older guys. 4.15Mp is enough for for anything that’s supposed to be posted online, but it is limiting. Summoning it up, most of the older 1D and 1Ds-series cameras are overlooked in my opinion. They fit the profile of most serious amateurs. They are built to last and they produce great images. And as it is now, they can be found as bargains, since the mirrorless trend makes them stand out as too bulky. Merry Christmas from a cold and grey Sweden!

Just havent had a problem since, but yeah it was a bad design for ages.

Hi Martin, I have this camera. And the mk I ..also Nikon d800. I have a wedding next month. Which camera would you use ? I only have a 50 1.8 g lens and a 24-70 f2.8 for the Nikon . But for my canons I have more lenses. I surpose a question is could I shoot a wedding on them two Nikon lenses . I know you shoot weddings on Nikon d600. But it died so you bought a d800 to replace it didn't you. Or would you use canon? lenses I have. 25-105 f4 85 f1.8 70-200 f4 50 F1.8 Tamron 28-75 f2.8 Sigma 105 macro Chears and thank you. Your photos are brilliant by the way.

Hi Stephen, i have questions as well but basically Id like to make sure you have enough storage space and batteries, you will chew through this much faster than you think. I would shoot the wedding mostly on the d800 with the 24-70 writing raw to both cards at the same time. Almost entirely auto iso aperture priority with the minimum shutter speed at 1/160. Id take the canon with the 24-105 70-200 and 85mm 1.8 as backup and for reach with the longer lenses. Imagine your d800 breaks during the ceremony for example. Ive had a camera break 5 minutes before the ceremony started, it has no effect if you have two cameras on you, if you dont then you have to explain to the bride and groom that you cant do anything more for the rest of the day. Take the 50 for the nikon as well in case of low light. Its a lot to carry so be prepared for that too. I use a roller case but if you have a large shoulder bag just put it on the ground as often as you can between your legs so no one falls over it. Ask any questions you want.

Just realised Martin, I never said thank you for getting back to me. So thank you for taking the time to advise me and for the amount you wrote. I watch all your videos, and come back to them when I can and watch them again . This is how I knew I never said thanks you . Because I have just come back to watch this one again. I am looking at a d610 to go with my d800 . Have you ever used the canon 1Ds mk3 ?

new here to the camera world! can anyone explain the manual mode on the 5d mark iii ? I feel like my settings are right but im still getting over exposed photos
@MartinCastein
@MartinCastein Жыл бұрын
2 things, you should look up some tutorials on how to use the histogram but additionally you should adjust your exposure based on what you see. If its too bright initially then increase shutter speed, for example.

Nothing wrong with old DSLR'S, I still am using my D500...The only thing the mirrorless wonder cameras will do is track the eye and show the exposure through the EVF..That's all fine but to me half the fun is trying to hold a focus point on a BIF and shooting full manual and having to have skill to get my exposure right..

Yeah i agree, i think mirrorless comes into its own if you do video though for sure, other than that, id really like a d850....

There is a photo store in my coutry that have two of these with about 90.000 shutter actuations. Should I buy one? Should I worry about shutter failing?

Depends on price. Can you try it out to see if everything works?

Don't worry about shutter fail. If it made it to 90k then it is a good one. These 5dmkii often go past 1M, sometimes even 2M.

I've actually never liked the 5d mk2 due to its button layout. Mk1 is MUCH better. But each to their own I guess. Canon 6d is about the same price these days and would be the best buy imo. It's pretty much a more modern, although not as sturdy Canon 5d classic.

Thats fair enough. the 5d classic is my favourite camera, I get on just fine with both though. the 6d is excellent too but its a different look from the 5d ii, I could easily make an arguement for owning all 3. Not really a logical one but certainly just for wanting them all.

Sounds a bit pedantic to me… the button layout is fine on either the 5D mkii or 6D and really not that hard to come to grips with
@TheDavveponken
@TheDavveponken Жыл бұрын
@@ESKATEUK Like I said, "each to their own".. I'm offering my opinion. The issue is I shoot in manual mode and can't change the iso as fluently on the 5d mark II as I can on the mark I (i.e. the back wheel). It's just a preference of a workflow that suits me. The button layout on 6d is like on the 5d mk1 in that regard.
