@hywel3143
@hywel3143 Жыл бұрын
@@RoyRiley I agree with your colleague! The sensor, ergonomics, particularly the placement of buttons, relatively small size and weight are all great features. It was somewhat eclipsed by the 5D Mk3 which came out in March 2012, the 6D being released in September of that year with a slightly cut down feature set. The only major difference is that the 6D only has one card slot, but that might be significant for a pro I suppose? If you ever had the time and inclination to review the 6D, I would find that fascinating.

@KC-in9px I'm excited for you! You're gonna love it. I considered selling all my other cameras and getting a couple more Mark II's for backups. I recently did some shots at ISO 6400, and they look great! I use On1 Photo Raw and Luminar Neo, so the software adds noise reduction automatically, and you have to pixel-peep to see any noise. Can you tell I'M excited! :-)

@@robertmccutchan5450 Tbh I haven't used cameras other than my phone since the 80's. I keep buying them but I've failed to launch. 1st purchase was a a used but perfect Canon M50. Then I found a like new Canon T4i (bought it for the cheap enough price). The Canon 5d mark ii caught my attention for its full frame sensor and its incredible reputation. It's a camera that was $2,700 when released so getting one that's like new for $349 was a no brainer. I'm committed to use the dang thing and then use the others as backups.....fingers crossed.

Roy, thank you so much for this video. It helped me get a greater understanding of that scary red menu. Lol I have always loved photography but didn’t give it a real go until 2018. Purchased a 1955 TLR. Once I understood it, I moved into 35mm and a year ago purchased a 5D MII, by choice, because of two qualities so many photographers highlighted which were important to me: filmic quality and the “x-factor” of the out-of-the-camera Canon colors. My favorite color film stock bounces back and fourth between Portra 160 and 400 and this camera, to me, puts out colors that are an gorgeous amalgamation of both. Can’t tell you how many times I run photos through the Lightroom presets only to keep them in their original OOC state.

I still use my 5d MKii and will continue using it in the foreseeable future, its not going on the shelf any time soon. I started back in the analogue days and if I compare this to my old TriX and Rodinal, then the 5Dii truly ROCKS!!! As long as you know how to use it this works wonders, I challenge anyone to look at my photos and tell me I used a 15 year old camera, and regarding Pixel peeping, that is a phenomenon that photographers struggle with, my clients do not have any ideas what that "problem" is all about. Besides that, the MKii it ridiculously cheap second-hand as well, if/when my dies I will probably get another one.

So its all about perspective. As a working professional I need the best tools for the job and so if a new camera comes out that is 10% faster or better in some way then I will probably buy one. Also cameras do wear out when you use them heavily every day so as soon as one of my cameras starts to show signs of age or begins to fail in some way then I will replace it with whatever is the current offering. Thats just the way I do things. However does that mean that the older cameras are suddenly no good? absolutely not!

Great camera. Still worth buying. My pictures taken with it were (mostly) not worse than with the 5DIV. High ISO performance is (slightly) better on the newer camera, as is the dynamic range (not that you'd notice it normally). A touch screen makes the set-up much easier. But to change aperture, exposure time and ISO using the dials is still much faster and easier.

Not a bug I have heard of.. worth reseting the camera in case someone has plugged in some weird settings?. lens switch set to AF? might be worth giving the contact between the camera and lens a gentle clean?

does back button focus work?
@SemiNeural
@SemiNeural 7 ай бұрын
@@RoyRiley Only back focus work in live view, in the viewfinder the back button focus does not work and the shutter button does, should've mentioned that earlier another weird thing, I'm using the 50mm f1.8 stm, full manual works only in live view which is also strange, I've also reset the settings multiple times and it still does not work sadly
@RoyRiley

@@SemiNeural weird. there is either a problem with the camera or some odd settings that are not being cleared when you reset. the trouble with this camera is that many of the custome functions do not make much sense so its a case of trial and error sometimes. maybe try with a different lesna nd see if there is any difference. apologies I cannot offer a better solution. good luck wioth it. hope you get it sorted. I am a long time fan of DM but not sure if I’ve seen that particular video. Saw an interesting one of him in Syria a few years ago with Anthony Lloyd. Maybe it’s the same film. I’ve been back buttoning since 1995. Not for everyone but it works for me

Thanks for this great video @RoyRiley ... I just bought a used 5D Mark II due to the low costs nowadays and look forward to what's next. As a fellow photojournalist, I'd love to see some of your journeys and assignments over the years. Subbed and thumbed up ... man, if your beat up well-seasoned Canon could tell some stories, lol.

In fact, I never found native lenses which I use exclusively, need calibration by AF Microadjustment. May be because I'm purely a hobbyist.
@RoyRiley

That’s good news! My experience is that it’s purely down to luck. For example I have had 3 or 4 50mm F1.4 lenses over the years. One or two were rather muzzy and needed accurate calibration. The other two have been very good. Luck of the draw!

I love my 5DmkII. I don't like very much that I can't change the dials: I like index finger dial set to apperture and thumb finger dial set to shutter - in my way of thinking my index finger is closer to the lens and the apperture ring (of course you need to imagine the old lenses with the ring) and my thumb is closer to the shutter, so it's natural to me I think (and I used to shoot a lot in AV mode). Seems to me a little bit confunsing that in M mode the front dial controls the shutter speed and than you change to AV mode and the front dial... simply changes! But I can live with that, it's not a real problem (and in 5DmkII I shoot in AV mode 95% of the time anyway - don't use it anymore for professional work, just my autoral work). Another thing: the auto ISO just work in the AV mode, in M mode don't work (but it's probably me). And about high ISO, I shoot a lot 3200 and 6400 (but noise/grain is not a problem to me, of course this is a personal preference). And I love the sound of the shutter/mirror, really loud.

I bought a 5DSR 2nd hand still yet to get a Cf card n reader etc ... Yet i noticed even with all the drive n upselling by Gear reviewers of Canon's RF gear . None of them questioned Canon's reason to increase the price of the Mrk4 by 100 . 2,799 . When a R6 is roughly the same price .You would think Canon would have reduced the price of the Mrk4 not increase it .

It’s tricky to think like this.. just choose what suits you best for your specific requirements and buy it at the best price. Dont worry too much about if you have lost money or not.. the camera is just the tool.. the picture is everything

Honestly I have not used it for a few years.. actually though the 5d2 has great video image quality when used well in the right way. On the other hand it’s a total pig to use…The R5 is so much better in so many ways.. still possible to tell great stories on the 5d2 though if there is a creative mind behind it.. hope that makes sense.
