@@RunNGunPhoto 100%. I'd argue that having a less capable camera is better while you're learning. You don't get bailed out by the advanced sensor or autofocus systems and need to work on composition and exposure rather than the ability to save the image in post.

Bought the 5D Mark II back in 2008 and it's still going strong in 2023. I almost upgraded to a Sony A7R V a couple of weeks back, but to be honest, I don't really need all that tech to take great photos. I shoot mainly landscapes, nature and models, nothing that really moves, I rarely use auto focus, only post max 4k photos to web and never print to paper. Wider dynamic range would be nice, but I always shoot raw and use several exposures when shooting landscapes anyway. I use the 5DII with a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II, Sigma 14 1.8 ART and a Sigma 50 1.4 ART. For me it makes way more sense to spend money on good glass than a new camera with features that won't make the photos any better. If I were to upgrade, it would be more for the 4K and 8K video capability.

I wouldn't go for 8k video.. even the legendary Arri Alexa is only 3.2k that gets upscaled to 4k. Quality over quantity. Go watch House, season six episode 21. Whole episode was shot on the 5D ii. 1080p is great. 4k is usually excessive unless you're a big production. Just know what you're doing with 180° shutter/2xFPS, and use ND if needed. Manual focus is what proper cinematographers use.

I think the older cameras have that special je ne sais quoi: that special "it" factor that newer cameras don't have. I've been loitering around my local camera store and have noticed a lot of film camera gear FLYING off the shelves lately. Perhaps we've made it to a point where those of us who see it as an art are getting too fed up with the AI look of the world and are yearning for simpler times.

Totally agree! My daily carry is the 5D Mark IV, which I absolutely love. It really lets me get the images that I want. That said, there are times when I purposely take out the 5DM2. Same lenses. Same batteries. Same CF cards. Pull the body out of the bag, drop in a lens, and we're off... The beauty of the Mark II is that of simplicity: put ISO on auto and everything else in manual mode. If I'm really in the mood, pull out the manual focus primes and really go retro. It _forces_ my brain to slow down and contemplate what I'm about to do. I love that about this camera. The captures are spectacular, and any small bit of extra sensor noise is easily cleaned up using any one of half a dozen capable apps. The latest ACR has an absolutely killer noise reduction feature that is silky smooth without that gawdawful plastic-y look. It's still a wonderful camera in 2023 and will be so for many more years. Best! J

Still using my 5Dii and very happy without major let-downs. The only drawback is if I push seriously high ISO, then its a bit noisy in today's standards.... but it is still a very capable tool. Just look at the marvelous photos professionals took using this 5Dii when it was the go-to pro-tool. Proving that a skilled person can create magnificent workmanship with it. The camera has not deteriorated and got worse with time, it's still as good as it was when released.

Totally agree! It’s not efficient to rely on this, but the new Lightroom Denoiser AI tool does a GREAT job at fixing where the Mii is weak in this specific issue. I can’t do this for every image, but when I have a few that are particularly noisy, it really helps me save the image without investing in a new camera for the time being. Eventually I’ll upgrade when I’m able, but love this fix for such an old camera.

This was my first full-frame sensor camera. I bought it on my 40th anniversary as a professional photographer in 2011. I shot every day in 2012 for a gallery series, using Leica R prime lenses exclusively with adaptors. My main cameras today are a Lumix S1R and a Leica M-P240, however the Canon is still used extensively and the images are still superb. I've never been an expert on photography, but the 5D has always felt to me like a flagship camera - not just a flagship Canon camera, but a flagship in the entire DSLR space. Like, if someone has a 5D, they must be a superb photographer. Even though I know "better gear" doesn't make a better photographer, that's how the 5D has always seemed to me. Now I'm tentatively interested in photographing some sports, and I'm already looking at cameras at a local camera store. I don't think I can affort the latest version of 5D, but luckily they're selling a used Mark 2 at a very affordable price, so your words of encouragement concerning an older model are very valuable! It would be so cool to finally own a camera that I've always looked up to.

Great stuff! I just finished shooting an event today with my trusty 5D mkii. It was super dark in places so I had to crank that ISO to H1(12800) at times to expose the image correctly. I agree that the high ISO gets quite noisy on the 5D mkii sensor but with Lightroom's new denoise AI feature it make this camera clean shooting up to H1 even H2 today! I'm impressed that AI today can turn a 15 year old camera's RAW file into something (close to) on par with cameras today! Though I do miss the new focusing systems for moving subjects. It is such a solid camera, i shot all kinds of events with it, it is so easy o set color profiles and the sensor is massive, the quality and resolution is gorgeous! and the best part is that... yes the auto focus kind of suck and it is slow, does not work well at low light so... i just practiced manual focusing and it is what ive been using, its quite nice to not depend on auto focus to take pictures, just like the 35mm film set ups it is quite a connection you develop with the camera and lens, and doing it for a few months I just got used to it and developed a feel for manual focusing! For me photography was the main profession for 20 years. Two years ago, I finally retired from the industry, having sold most of the equipment. I left myself a Canon 5d mk2 and some lenses (Canon EF 35mm f1.4 L, Canon 90mm f2.8 TS, Canon 17-40 f4 L, Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye). And for my collection of manual optics from Nikkor (50mm f1.4, 24mm f2.8, 300mm f4), I bought a Sony a5000 for a penny. Most of the time I take photos on my Pixel 6 pro. But sometimes I take the cameras off the shelf when I want something more than the phone camera can give. And both cameras still makes me happy :) I have a desire to buy something more modern (maybe it should be Canon R and Sony a7lll), but so far I see no significant reason to spend around 3000 euros on this toys.

I sold ALL my Canon stuff -- bought a "Used" 5D Mark II for $450.00 and put my money into "L" glass. I can make it "sing" as I know this camera so well. It's about knowing your camera's capabilities more than having the latest/greatest and not using more than 20% of its capabilities.

I'd recommend a 50 f/1.4 or 1.8 like this: amzn.to/3RSIVHL The 16-35mm is great for wider shots: amzn.to/3RUtTBh A 24-70mm is going to be a solid mid-range lens that will do 75% of your work:amzn.to/3XudnJs And lastly, the 70-200 is great for portraits and distant things, AND it's really come down a lot in price: amzn.to/3E2rZZO

The D5600 is about 5 years newer than the 5D Mark II. It also has an APS-C (crop) sensor which may be a little better for Bird/Wildlife because of the "extra reach" it gives you. I don't think it would be a massive upgrade, unless you went with the 5D Mark III or IV.

As someone who buys used Canon cameras more than most I would say that the 5D Mk2 and the 6D mk1 are the best bang-for-the-buck cameras out there. The Mk3 crosses into a price point where I'd start to look at the R series, and the Mk4, despite being a professional tool, was a stop-gap before the R series launched. I have a 5D mk1 (among other things) and I think you need to love the idea of owning the "Classic" to buy one, it's a bona-fide classic, produces beautiful images, but was never the finished article. I love it so that's OK. The Mk2 is the finished article and has everything you need. It's a Pro camera for peanuts money. I still prefer the 6D to carry and use, and consider it the most underrated camera in history, but it's not truly "professional" in a couple of ways, like the 5D2. LOOK ...... You can buy a 5D, 5D2 and 6D for about $900 for the three. That's the same as a modern phone, so it's not like you really need to choose.

The first camera to shoot The President of the United states of the time. My first FF camera also, and is still my main camera to today. Im in the works for r5c and a r5 but as of now this is my tool of use. 21mp is more than enough even the 1DX has a 21mp, its the pictures not the camera so much. Yup Ansel Adams is still going even stronger today then when he did it. edit, one thing i can say is that this camera and the original 5d has teached me not to hope a shot is in focus or wasting useless rapid shots in hope of, this camera has helped me to really be educated in what I do to get the results im after with not much handed to me. @@RunNGunPhoto And a copy with no crazy high shutter count like 150K. But I realize that I don't have a single Canon mount lens so starting a complete new camera system? And then I have to hide it from my wife because I am on the brink of a divorce already. I think I will pass😁

I picked up one of these used for a good price, and added a 50mm f1.8 lens which i use for portrait photography. I had to replace the rubber covers on the left side of the camera, as they had rotted. The replacements were just cheap eBay things - not canon spares and they don't fit perfectly but they do the job. I also had to source a battery cover, as this one didn't have a cover. Same story, not a canon part and not a perfect fit but does the job. Probably not good enough for a pro, but I'm an occasional hobby photographer. Otherwise I can't complain about the camera, it feels solid and tough and I am amazed at the quality of the images I am able to get. I did my research before buying and I suggest the same for any beginner, but the best advice I had was to spend your money on lenses not the camera. Ans if you're aiming to be a pro ( Im not ) spend some money on tuition. Thanks for the video!

@RunNGunPhoto
@RunNGunPhoto Жыл бұрын
Muhammad, you can certainly use this camera for sports. But, I would probably recommend a camera with a higher continuous shooting frame rate (FPS). Canon and Nikon have some great alternatives. The 5D MKII wasn't really designed for fast FPS of continuous shooting.

I don't know if I am crazy in the head, BUT... I had the 550D since it released then bought the 5D Mark II NEW, less than 1000 shutter count. Then I bought the R5C (which is insane) but here is the catch... I prefer the photos taken with the 5D Mark II. The way it looks, color and detail is just so much more 'better'. Not in resolution but just 'better'. I don't know how to explain it.

What do you think about the 5D Mark IV comparing it to the 5D Mark II? Does it have the same feel to it? Reason for watching your vid, great vid btw, was installing Magic Lantern to play around with the 5D Mark II's video mode. Wondering what's possible to get out of it. Nowadays where resolution doesn't matter and even applications such as Dehancer exist I think it's intriguing what 'feel' the 5D Mark II video gives.

Hello! Great video and what a great explanation about this beast. This camera still feels like a benchmark in 2023, I seen some insane stuff captured with this camera. Whats your trick to getting those razor sharp photos with the 5D Mark II??? I own the Canon 85 1.8 and I struggle with sharpness and chromatic aberration. Thanks!
@RunNGunPhoto
@RunNGunPhoto Жыл бұрын
It’s all about your lens. I have some terrible chromatic aberration around the edges of my 300mm and I really won’t recommend the 24-105 f/4 L either. I wonder if your lens needs a calibration or repair? Sometimes elements can shift and cause a lack of sharpness.

I believe Canon has an EF 24-70 f2.8 that’s much sharper than the 24-105. This lens is known to be not great. I think the Version 2 is better though.

@RunNGunPhoto
@RunNGunPhoto 6 ай бұрын
The 5D Mark II is a great camera. However, if you put a cheap lens on ANY camera, you're not getting the full capabilities of the camera. That's the fault of the lens not the camera. IMO and 18-55 is a cheaper kit lens and you won't be getting the best quality out of any camera you put it on.
