For me, the live view touch focus is the silver bullet. Put this baby on a tripod with the 100-400mm and 2x extender, and autofocus at f/11 is quick and accurate by just touching the screen where you want to focus. All the other points in this review are also bang on. I love my mk iv.

I use a 5D MK IV as a B cam for video and stills at concerts with a 2.8 70-200. The zoom range is perfect for shooting stills from balconies and with the crop in 4K you get that much closer for sharp, tight second angle shots. As the B cam file size is a non issue and the c-log files are very good. Almost everyone bashes the crop but for me it's a plus that makes this the best hybrid camera out there. I much appreciate the broad coverage of the strengths and weaknesses of the 5D4. I appreciate the info on the video quality in 1080p. This accords with my own experience. I haven't even tried 4K, as I've had no demand from my clients. The 1080 videos I've shot look great! And I love shooting with it as a stills camera, for many of the reasons you mention, esp the great color. I also find the files, esp when I shoot at fairly low ISO's, to be very nice to edit, with good latitude for rolling back shadows. Highlights--gotta be careful there. The Sonys and newer Nikons may be somewhat better in these categories, but the 5D4 does very well, IMHO. I love it for astrophotography also. With my Rokinon 20mm f/1.8, in a dark sky area, it can do a spectacular photo of the Milky Way.

I just bought the 5D Mark IV when one of the "big" online stores had a Christmas sale - the Body plus a Battery Grip plus a 64GB SD card - all for $1999. Upgrading from a 6D. I also have 7D Mark II and the controls were very similar so not a huge learning curve. Didn't think I was going to like the touch screen, but yeah, it's cool.

I am actually waiting on a used 5D IV to arrive, upgrading from the 6D as well! $2600 after taxes (CAD). I don't necessarily NEED to upgrade just yet...I could (and likely will) get a lot of life out of the 6D still. But this will give me more options, for increased D-range, WAY more focus points, etc.

Just one note, you can shoot 4K on the SD Card Slot. I've released two videos on this and use Sandisk Extreme Pro 512GB UHS 1 SD Card with no issues for 4K, for years.Thanks for the video!

Autofocus is great, but if you have a still subject, use the magnifier button on the left and use manual focus to really get it on the money.

I have a 5d Mk4 and now I'm searching for a backup/2nd/B roll camera. However for the backup camera I prefer a wayyy smaller and lighter camera yet high specced so I'm undecided between their M mirrorless or their cropped sensor DSLR. Thinking of the M50 or 77D

This is a pro grade camera. The sensor digic 6+ is the same one that's in the 1dx miii. Just has more megapixels so a little loss in light gathering resulting in loss of image detail capture, more noise and lower dynamic range. But the more pixels in a given area means more pixels on your subject say a bird. And when cropped or magnified the sharper your image would appear. Of course the newer the sensor, the pixel pitch, photosite area and the smaller the pixel density the better the image processing. With such an improvement over the rest of the 5d series. The pixel pitch comparison is as follows. The original 5d digic ii sensor and a 8.2 pixel pitch.The 5d mii has 6.41 pixel pitch on a digic 4 sensor, The 5d miii has 6.25 microns pixel pitch on digic 5+ sensor , 5 Dsr has a 4.14 micron pixel pitch on dual digic 6 sensors.5d miv pixel pich is 5.36um on dual digic6+ sensor.

It's nice to see that super-sampling is bult in. I've been doing that with my scans for years because averaging out several pixels greatly reduces the likelihood of noise showing up. It's cool that the video mode has that built in rather than just ignoring pixels. I've been shooting Canon dSLRs since just about the beginning with the 10D and this is going to be my 3rd body. It's a shame that they've already announced that they're basically done with the format.

FullandStarving Photography if you’re doing photography ibis won’t make a very big difference to you unless you do very slow shutter photography. If you’re doing video , I would jump on the canon r/rp or 5d mkiv. Canon cameras are always only a tiny bit better than the last , so you won’t miss any major features. I am a big fan of starting as soon as possible. Start now-make money-improve your craft and buy a new camera if you need to. But always better to start then wait 🙏🏻 I hope my response was education and motivational.

5D all the way, flip out LCD Liable to be broken on R6, R6 no where near the build quality of the 5D, 5D 30mp. 5D Better ergonomics for someone with larger hands. The only thing ive really hankered after is the IBIS. This camera has years left in it, I know photographers still using 5D MKIIs - the kit doesn't get the photos.

I agree with what you say about Canon colors, they are the best imo also. I shoot with a pool of photographers in many events, I can always tell the canon images vs the nikon. Nothing wrong with nikon, just different and canon just looks best.

Agree the Nikon ergonomic's are so complicated. Canon custom feature and ergonomic's are superior by far. The flash menu for Nikon bodies are buried and you have to hold one button while adjusting another. And Canon's are just one button away and you choose the button or buttons for many optional buttons,dials or switches. Canon's flash exposure and ambient exposure are controlled seperately. And the newest 600 ex rt and 430 ex rt iii can both be used as a master or slave in multi flash set ups plus remote triggered and set up from your cameras LCD or LCD on the new ex rt3 remote trigger. So simple it's almost scary. All auto focus points available at f8 even when using 1.4 tele extender iii or the 2x iii with super telephoto or most Canon lenses.

I see it takes very great pictures and that's all I'm worry about. 30.4 megapixels and a good Tamron 24-70 that shit sounds good to me. Hi there! I am a filmmaker who usually works with a DP but want to learn to self-shoot and in this regard am a novice. I therefore want to buy my first camera with kit and Ive recently seen an amazing deal for the following kit: 5D Mark IV DSLR Camera + EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM lens + KamKorda Pro Camera Bag + Speedlite Flash + Advanced Camera Tripod + Home Studio Lighting Kit all for £3,000. I orginally had a £2,000 budget to buy a secondhand starter camera plus some sound equipment etc but then I saw the above and wondered if it might be worth it to buy it for this higher price brand new. SO my question is as a beginner should i stick to my original plan and get a cheaper camera which will allow me to buy more lenses, sound etc Or buy the mk iv package for extra money? Also as someone who is not very tech savvy, im wondering if this camera will be too difficult for a beginner to navigate. Maybe there is a better beginners camera out there that still gives quality images? Basically i will use the camera to make short films aswell some indoor straight to camera style projects. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance 🙂

Hey great question, and I love when people ask questions like this. I assume all your work is motion. In which case that 5dMKIV kit will be a poor choice. That lense, and flash/ tripod wont work for motion. I think I would recommend a fuji xt30/ xt3 for you, they have amazing video at 200MB with alot of built in film emulations. This camera will allow you to get really striking imagery right in camera with minimal editing. I assume you arnt working with a colorist at the moment. The auto focus in the fuji isnt great, but since you are working with a Dop, i feel like you will have someone pulling focus. Definitly invest in some good glass, fuji has lots of good lenses, I would get a cheaper fuji and invest in glass

I looked into the camera you recommended too and it really is lovely. I think however i had my heart set on a Canon as my first camera, mostly for the colours and also because alot of my collaborators tend to work with Canon so will likely make sharing kit, getting advice etc easier going forward. The key things i had on my camera wishlist were...shoot 24fps, Slow mo capability (ideally 120p but lower is also cool as long as it can shoot slo mo in HD), front facing screen, sturdy camera and good to hold (ie nothing too small and light like some of the mirrorless cameras but not crazy heavy either) 4k Isnt a massive need right now but a 4k sensor is a nice touch. Ideally full frame camera and decent in camera sound to tide me over until i can get a good mic. So finally i have narrowed it down to two VERY different cameras DRUMROLL: Canon C100 mkii OR Canon 90D!!! With the c100 i reckon i can make some great filmic projects (which is my aim) and entice some decent DPs to work with me, but the 90D might be more versatile, allow me to buy more kit and it has a higher shutter speed i believe? What would you choose i wonder?
