For a 5-6 years old camera, the 5D4 holds pretty well over time. Yes, it's older and it's normal that new cameras get better and better. But the 5D4 is still a serious camera.

My main camera is the Canon R5. Unfortunately I had to send it in for repairs due to a loose hot shoe. My 2nd camera is a 5Dmk4, but I decided to buy an R6 because the mirrorless AF/live view is just great. After shooting w/ the R6 for 2 weeks daily I am happy about everything except for the resolution. I think this camera is made for people who mainly shoot web-content. If my clients want to do print ads etc, I grab the 5d4 purely for the resolution.

I own both, and even though I love the great features of the R6 over the 5DMK4, I'm keeping both. The 5DMK4 is a war horse build to last and I'm used to its buttons, dials and wheels. It's been a great camera for 3 yrs for me.. But I also have to admit that the focusing system, the eye detection, the EVF, and the flip screen of the R6 are game changers for me. Thanks for the good video 👍

Do you use your EF lenses on the R6? If so how's the focus on these? That's the one part I'm hesitant about !
@juanjaramillo18542 жыл бұрын
@@seancoombes3446 - Hi Sean. All I have is EF "L" lenses and they all work flawlessly with the adapter. Focusing is fast and accurate, I would say this was the feature that appealed me the most when I rented the R6 before I bought it. I'd advice you to rent it first if your in doubt but I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I was debating between the R5 and the R6 just because of the sensor resolution as 20MP were not too appealing to me, but I have not had any issues with it and I have done some (moderate) cropping with my pictures with great results. Well, I could go on but I think this answers you question, Sean. The R6, in my opinion, is superior to the 5DMK4 I've been using for several years and I simply love it. Hope this helps and I if you need any extra info, I'll be more than happy to help. Good luck 👍

How do you feel about the image quality and the difference in resolution? Does the noise level and sharpness of the R6 compensate for the drop from 30 to 20 Mpx?
@juanjaramillo1854 Жыл бұрын
@@muresansergiubohdan - At the time I'm responding to this question, I no longer have the 5DMK4, I sold it as I completely transitioned to mirrorless. I continue to use the R6 and, in relation to your question, I don't miss/need the extra 10 Mpxs of the 5DMK4. I still regard that camera as a great one but the DSLR days are gone for me. The R6 has always met my expectations in sharpness, noise and low light conditions, pretty much in every field except in one: cropping from a far subject like birds. To compensate, I bought a canon 100-400 mm L lens with a 1.4x teleconverter and results have been fantastic. There was a time I felt tempted to get the R5 because of this reason, but as somebody wisely wrote somewhere in a video comment here..."you don't need to get another camera, you just need to get closer". That comment made me change my mind and saved me about $2000 dollars...I have not regretted doing so 😉

Thanks for the information, it was interesting hearing your take on this current photographic dilemma. I also spent a large part of my photographic life as a sports photographer. The difference is that when I started in photography there was not even autofocus never mind digital. The way of the future is without a doubt mirrorless, but DSLR's still have some life left. Probably because am really old, I still prefer the naked image in the DSLR viewfinder. There is one point you did fail to mention. The cost of new glass. Canon RF lenses have more than doubled in price over Canon EF lenses. Also the R3 will be out in a couple months. If the rumors are correct. The current pricing of the R5 is about a grand too high.
@kevinraposo3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to comment, sounds like you've had a lot of interesting experiences! You're correct, I failed to mention the increased cost of RF lenses mainly because the EF to RF adapter performance was pretty much flawless in my experience. @@kevinraposo Just remember that the amount of light doubles with every stop. Hence the ISO scale 100, 200, 400, 800 etc. If you took a very wide dynamic range scene and exposed for the shadows, the R6 would allow for around 70% extra light at the top end before the highlights clipped. A 15ev sensor would allow for 8 times the amount of light before clipping the highlights when compared with a 12ev sensor. Thanks for replying.

The sad part is that the R6 does not actually have the 14.3 as advertised. I tested the camera and it clearly falls below Sony's 15 stops. It's more like 13.5 stops. I did test the camera and i saw this for myself. Also confirmed by other reviews.

Thanks for that comparison. Ultimately, your first question is if you need to make any changes. If you've mastered your 5D and you're getting the results you need, put the wallet back in your pocket. If you're a pro and you do a lot of video, perhaps the 5D is now your back up camera. As a pro once told me: 'there's a lot of expensive equipment out there capturing mediocre images'. Yes, it is refreshing to see Canon finally innovating again (thanks to Sony), and with competition intensifying, it means innovate or die. So, the R6 you have now will probably get to the '5D phase' a lot sooner than your 5D did. With Sony discounting their models on a regular basis, you can bet the R6 (and R5) will be declining in price too...and more than 300.00. So if you don't really need it right now...be patient. In the meantime, let's see what Canon does with the R3 !!
@trouwfotomakerij2 жыл бұрын
I'm not so sure about that price development. I own my 5D mark IV three years now, and the price difference between what I paid and the price now is € 200,- The R6 stayed on the same price level pretty much the whole first year. I think Canon is counting on the loyalty of users just because they already own the glass. (Although with that in mind I feel they should have thrown in that EF-RF-adapter for free). I for one are still using my EF lenses and I don't plan on replacing them since I think they are absolutely wonderful and I still use the 5D IV alongside the R6...

Hey Great Video Kevin Thanks for all your inputs, few of my inputs i would like to Share have owned 5dm4 since 2016 still use it as my main body, Used R6 recently on a Safari , accidently my 5Dm4 took a fall and guess wat not a scratch thats how 5d/7d/1d bodies are . R6 on the other hand is great with AF and EVF ,Lot of cool things you can do is touch and Drag AF points while ur looking into EVF. You can do this with 5dm4 too using AF point selection Button just a trick for some one who does not know. For me i dont see any significant reason to switch from 5d to R6 at the moment, But if some one is upgrading from APSC or 6d line up or 5dm3 then R6 is an awesome camera to upgrade to. Images from R6 are a bit Sharper compared to 5dm4 i guess there no AA filter. 5dm4 : Landscapes, Portrait ,Wildlife (in low ISO) R6 : Crazy crazy camera ,one wont regret buying one. Really appreciate this. I've got/love my 5Div as my primary body with a 7Dii as the backup. I've found that I never pick up the 7Dii anymore - for me, the 5Div does a better job in all areas of my photography (birding, airshows, dog shows, watersports). Because of this, I thought it might be a good time to step into the mirrorless world IF the new body would be complementary to the 5Div or vice versa. From what I've read and what I saw in the vid - that isn't really the case with the R6. In many ways, they sound like they are very similar. With the exception of the autofocus, the pluses for the R6 aren't game changers for me, which makes me think that at the current price point, the R6 isn't a good investment for me.

For me, it's not a close comparison at all. The thing is, with the R6 I get image stabilization with my old EF 50mm f1.4 and 100mm f2, makin them so much more useful for me. Also, the autofocus is just amazing compared to the 5D series. Both these big-aperture lenses were really hard to focus correctly, as the focus plane is extremely thin, and it is curved. Now with this excellent AF, I get perfect in-focus shots across the entire frame 99% of the time. The improvement here is simply massive. As a stills photographer, there is no question at all which one to get.

While Canon don't recommend 'dangling a camera by fingertips', they recognize this dangling as an important factor for comfort. So, Canon has been designing their cameras considering many situations which includes dangling the camera by only one middle finger. 'Canon Imaging Plaza' channel told this point in their video on March 1, 2021. I think R6 isn't a successor of 6Ds, but real sibling of R5.
@HermesAndroidProject2 жыл бұрын
What usually works is loosely wrapping the neck strap around your wrist, while 'dangling' the camera in your hand. I never had a situation where the camera actually dropped on the floor, but I did have a slip on a stair case covered in moss, where my immediate reaction was to hold camera close to my body, bruising my shoulder. So I guess it's part of the initiation process on walking around with a camera. I personally hate using neck straps, it's fatiguing after a day's walk.

No blackouts when burst shooting animals? ✅ Advanced functionality with Q button in EVF instead of top lcd? ✅
@onlysublime2 жыл бұрын
One thing to keep in mind is while mirrorless cameras are great for simulating exposure before you take the shot you do need to be cognizant of the settings because in my experience when I'm under extreme fast moments, you can crank up your iso to increase exposure without realizing you turned it enormously because it's doesn't stimulate noise. Or if you turn down shutter speed too low and your subject is too blurry due to subject motion or camera shake since the simulation cannot approximate that

Thank you for this short and very effective comparison. I've been a 5DMk4-shooter for almost five years and I just recently (two weeks ago) bought the R6. Don't miss the "missing" 10 MPs at all, love the increased lowlight quality - and the new autofocus just blows me away. From my point of view your result (12 by 10) looks too close because I give by far the most weight on the AF. So for me the R6 is the way better camera although I love my heavy duty 5D4 with more than 400.000 shots and no issue at all. Will never sell it and still use it for studio work or good daylight conditions. But the R6 will be my new workhorse - may it wind up as solid as the 5D4.

You sound like me, and how happy I felt after upgrading! I do agree the point system is flawed, but I figured it was the easiest way to quantify this comparison. Everyone should weight the categories depending on what matters the most to them

Do you find any differences in the raw files? The mark iv has dedicated picture profiles and the r6 does not. How much different do the skin tones look and which do you prefer,?
@stefanankerfoto2 жыл бұрын
@@kingofpresets8437 Hi, thank you for the question. Unfortunately I can't answer it because I haven't tested the difference in skin tones yet. And I doubt that I will do this in the future because I don't feel the need for comparisons. Maybe because there is no big difference. And picture profiles? Tell me if I'm wrong, but I think those are important for capturing videos only. As I really never do this, it's not relevant for me and I can't answer this question either. Sorry for not being as helpful as you hoped, but over all I'm more interested in capturing moments than checking technical details. What I actually prefer in a camera is a certain ruggedness, good ergonomics, and a fast and accurate autofocus. That's what I got with the R6. Have a nice day :-)

If you're a hybrid shooter the R6 is a no brainer. But if you focus mostly on photos the 5D mkIV, to me, still has the edge. I own both and the R6 feels like a toy, I don't like the button displacement (and the size of rear dial), the lack of a top display and the cheap feel of the body. I also like more the optical viewfinder over the electronic one. Sure, AF is inferior in the 5D, but, to me it's not that much of a difference all in all, unless you use servo most of the times. It's also important to consider that if you use EF lenses they're gonna feel really unbalanced on the R6 because the adapter. Last but not least: if you use adobe softwares and you also like the look of canon camera colors or, like me, you start to process from one of the camera colors, you're gonna be disappointed because there's no support by today and it's likely there's never going to be any. You'll be forced to process R6 raw files starting from adobe proprietary color profiles, for some people it's not a problem but this is something worth to mention. By today the only R camera that has this feature on abode softwares is the R. So, well, I'm keeping both bodies but as my main camera I still use the 5D, but consider that I shoot mostly stills. The R6 is my backup body for perfect AF needs and excellent high iso performances

Try the 5D4 in live view and you will see that the focus is on par with R6. At least for stills. For videos it won't make much of a difference either. When using the optical viewfinder focus you are actually using a 20+ year old technology and cannot expect spectacular results.

I shoot mostly still, but they are stills of action. The 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic, and eye and body tracking put the R6 in a whole different league. A game changer.

I have a R6 and an 5D Mark III. I love the 5D Mark III more, because of the build quality and it feels more like a camera not a computer. The AF is also fast enough for weddings, and the image quality is exact the same. I love top display and overall design. It is crazy because im a dslm user for years and first got the R6 (after some Sonys) and then the 5D III (my first Canon DSLR) on Ebay.

I swapped from the 5d3 to the RP and I definitely miss the feel of the 5d3 even though the RP specs are far superior. I ordered the R6 a couple of days ago. Hopefully the R6 has the video shooting experience that became so big with the 5d lineup

Thanks for the video, R6 just ordered, was about a time to move from the original 6D. I did not mind the picture quality at all, i did mind, however, the slow AF and a lot of action shots - kids running around, dog photos etc., were just problematic to capture many times. Looking forward to the new camera :)

The 6D was my first full-frame camera, one of my favourite that I've ever owned! But you'll love the R6, enormous upgrade.

Hi, I’m also hoping to take a lot of action shots - kids & dogs. So do you mean that 5Dm4 is too slow from your experience? Thanks! :)
@BrekoTa3 жыл бұрын
@@sylvoniaa Hey Pixie, if the question was meant to be directed to me, then I do not think 5D4 is bad camera whatsoever, but the R6 has autofocus advantage, tilting screen - big advantage for video, but I found myself using it super often for stills too. Just the reality of not having to manually choose autofocus point no more is a huge plus for me. Honestly since upgrading from 6D it is like day and night shooting experience. The tilting display is perfect for low angle shots of smaller dog breeds like ours are, and eye-level photography of kids is great with it as well, I barely ever use viewfinder now. Overall, if the budget is not a limiting factor, I would go for R6 any day over DSLR. Good luck choosing the right machine.

@@kevinraposo I think you understand cameras and explain it better than anyone else I have seen. I would love to see the same video on as many lenses as possible. It would be nice if you could expand your site to teach photography. By that I mean, take a subject, lets say interior, portrait, animals, landscape, family etc and show what camera, lens and settings, lighting, poses, does and don'ts are ideal to achieve the best result. The have a website to comment on peoples photos and how they could have improved it, by letting people to post their photo and explain what settings they used. Both for video and photos. This way you will can go on forever and increase your rating.
