end product = great specs + fan-ism ? There's a good reason Canon and Nikon are the two big brand.. and nowadays Nikon is kicking Canon ass so they wake up (or stop their idiot market segmentation). Intel and AMD are doing the same .. some years Intel kicks asses, this year it's AMD.. so goes the market
@Koushikdbrp6 жыл бұрын
I'm a Canon user and couldn't agree more. Canon is just not innovating anymore. Their technology is old, they are trying to earn big by ripping off customers. In case of video, people say that Canon doesn't want to affect their cinema camera market by giving good video functionalities in their DSLRs... but Sony has a Cinema camera line too... how are they putting such great specs in their full frame mirrorless cameras for such a comparatively cheaper price? Canon probably needs new managers and marketing analysts.

I'm a Canon user, and I'll agree, the D850 is a much higher performing camera in almost every category. That being said, the camera that you can use the best/the most fluidly, will yield the best photos for you. I stayed with Canon and got the 5D Mark IV, for a few reasons. (1). I have, and am used to my Canon glass, how it renders how it handles different lighting scenarios etc. (2). I rarely need more than 20-25MP, much less 45. (3). I never shoot video, ever...if it was up to me they would take it out of SLRs and just make the camera lighter and less expensive. and (4). I prefer Canon's default color profiles, yes you can tweak raw to look however you want but that's just another step to add to the workflow. At the end of the day, there are a lot of non-quantitative, quality of life aspects that affect how a camera system handles, and how it influences your workflow. The most important decision is to pick the one that fits yours best so you can continue to enjoy photography and not be bogged down with gear and workflow quirks. Happy shooting everybody!
@Powerstroke987 жыл бұрын
I agree totally on these companies should take the 'video' aspect, right out of the DSLR! Buy a dedicated video camera for video! These dedicated video cameras are downright low cost items these days, and as you say, adding quality features plus lower weight would be much better!

hmmm... a lot of words. Jarad (aka, 'That Nikon Guy') just said the Canon 5D4 had better 4K video quality than the Nikon D850, and he also said the Canon has superb, market leading AF on video (and live view stills, btw), whereas the D850 has terrible AF during video. Miss focus, and your shot is toast. You Nikon fanboiz crack me up. The other issue not covered here is sports still shot AF. I do know the 5D4 AFs on birds-in-flight really well, if using Canon Glass, and drogonflies in flight down @ the pond should be no problem. Canon excells in this. What about the Nikon, how does it do with Nikon glass ? Most Nikon users in the 3 clubs I'm in seem to use Sigma or Tamron glass (doesnt Nikon make affordable glass ?) and how is the Nikons BIF AF then ? Real world vs specs on paper fanboiz.

This is SUCH a hard choice for me. You told me exactly what I need to do at 12:36 - you said, "If you're somebody that's shooting video and you need continuous autofocus, you're going with the Canon." That's ME. But the fact that it uses old technology worries me because I don't plan to upgrade for another 4 years or so. Am I making the wrong choice since it doesn't have all the latest technology? Or does that even matter if my main problem is that I need a camera that can focus really well? I have a KZbin channel and I'm a one-woman show. I have had plenty of shots ruined because my Nikon D7100 just doesn't focus. Hmmmm.......

Buy the one you want to buy; your customers won't care. No one will stop you and say: "Your burst rate was a bit low on this fantastic shot!" or "Let me compare your shots, to someone who shot the same event on the rival system". One camera does not destroy the other, in fact in the real world, one has absolutely no bearing on the works of the other, unless you are using both at the same time, and like to make visual comparisons; which of course no one does in the real world. At the end of the day, it's your money, there's no right or wrong; choose the one you want, and go take some nice pictures. To be fair, I think this is Fro's conclusion; could have just said that from the get go.

Canon... I have been using a 7D-Mkii for almost 2 years now and am happy with it. Was looking to add a full frame and some new lenses soon but will wait and see if a 5D-Mkv has major upgrades (I suspect it will). I won't bash Nikon because they are definitely pushing the envelope right now, but I have always been suspect of some issues they have had in the past. My brother has a professional video company in Florida and uses 2 5D-Mkiii's for all his work. I asked him if he was gonna upgrade to 4K Video and he said "No way". Too much money to upgrade all of his equipment to edit it, and to this point no customer has ever asked him if he shoots 4K.

I love talking specs; srsly, I am a gearhead. When I baught my first DSLR I was checking facts and statistics what to buy. At this time it was only Canon vs Nikon, so I went to the store and tried both. The user interface / menu system and the Overall handling was the breaking point for me. What are the benefits of technical surpremacy when I don't like the camera as a tool? I went with Canon, I am invested in a sh**load of L- lenses and stuff. I see the aspects of a Sony A7R ii, Nikon D850... But I don't want to change, the features of other cameras don't make mine worst. The 5dIV is a great cam, and in real life some of my favorite shots were taken with a 70D, a 6D or even my old 1000D. And nobody looked ever at my wall and asked me what camera i used for this or that photo.

I just bought D850 and it is great. My skill is lacking miles behind. But if you consider shooting videos more than photos, I would still recommend 5D4 because of the focus system in video mode. Nikon has been ahead on their sensors for years. When the D3 and D300 were released Canon fell behind and stayed there. But they battled back with excellent feature-sets that kept them competitive, even if the Nikon IQ was a bit better. But with the D850 Nikon simply went crazy and nailed it. Best DSLR in the world, which is saying a LOT because all of the DSLRs out there are great. The D850 can do it all and leads in almost every area.
@smooth67184 жыл бұрын
I have a D850 and a D500. I use back-button focusing on both. With regards to the switching from continuous to single and back again, this can easily be done by assigning this function to this function, which I have done and switching is a joy. Also, one finds that shooting in 46 MP has its shortcomings like you say, it is very simple to change to a lower res in the menu of the D850. Thus, delete the two checks from the Canon and call it a draw.

Then why is that a reason to hate Fuji? The X-T2 is arguably the best APS-C camera on the market right now. I shot full frame for years before I switched to Fuji (the most recent being the Nikon D750) and don't miss full frame at all. Full frame doesn't offer that much over APS-C these days. The difference in a lot of cases is negligible.

Really love MyGearVault - so thanks for that. I think manufacturers need to lower their pricing faster if they have long production cycles. The Canon is already a year old, and shouldn't be priced the same as a brand new Nikon with newer features. They should lower by at least 15% each year. That would teach a lesson to the manufacturers as well - don't wait 4-5 years between models! I'm a Canon shooter, but I wouldn't buy the Mark IV. I also wouldn't get the 5DSR at this time. I think it's worth waiting for Canon's response to all the great products that came out this past year, i.e. Sony A9 and Nikon D850. But it drives me crazy to see how many people jump ship from one manufacturer to another just because of the latest shiny thing.

And my previous canon cameras and lenses have been flawless. I used the service center due to my own fault. I need the continuous video focus. 30 mp is plenty for me. 99% of my images are viewed on my iPad. My $8k canon kit is just fine. The equivalent Nikon kit would cost $10k. I won’t see a $2k image quality increase with the Nikon.

Thanks for the comparison, Jared! A slam dunk for Nikon, but you still went too easy on Canon!!! 1) 45mp vs. 30mp is HUGE. Just because you don't always need more megapixels doesn't mean the cameras should be considered equal. There are some people who really do need more megapixels. And the ability of your computer should not be considered when looking at camera specs. 2) 64 ISO vs. 100 ISO is important as well! When shooting outside in the bright sun, that little bit really helps with strobes. And the dynamic range is better at 64. Tip: Jared - You should set the AF ON button to focus lock. I leave autofocus in Continuous, use the shutter button to activate focus and shoot, then press the AF ON button to lock focus when needed. Much easier than switching back and forth between Continuous and Single autofocus.

I think he went easy on the Canon because he looks past the spec sheet. Honestly is the final image, once its been processed, really any better ? If the final product is enough of a difference where the average Joe could tell the difference then I would say Nikon is clearly better. Unless someone is a photographer just shooting for other photographers approval likes.
@CameraMystique7 жыл бұрын
Dan, I tested personally the D810 vs the D850 with the Zeiss 135, and unless you print wall size you won't see a difference. The D850 seems to get the WB accurately in 90% of shots (the D810 sometimes needs a bit of post for the WB). 30 or 36 mp is not that dramatic of a difference from the 45 as you may think (12-15% difference). And unless you use a tripod and high shutter speed, you have more chances not shaking it with the D850 (double the focal lens rule...). The details may not be distinguishable, but the shaking is! I tried it on a trip - both cameras, my daughter had the D810. Not to mention diffraction - the D850 limits the aperture range one full stop in terms of diffraction. If you have a really sharp lens, you'll get better corners and the same center with the D810 at f/16 (!!!). And you'll be like "whaaaat". Yup.
@Lofote7 жыл бұрын
45 vs 30 MP is not huge. Just look at how many percent more pixels you have in one dimension. It would be huge if it would be factor 2x in pixel width or more. But then it would be at least 120 MP on the Nikon side.
@Mikri907 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's not so linear and simple as people think it is. 10 vs 25mp for instance, is huge, because it's 150% increase in pixel count. That's why even the jump from 13 to 21 from 5D to 5D mark2 was big back in the day. But now we came to a point of diminishing returns, 45mp is 50% increase in pixel count, which is already a way smaller jump, and the increase in actual image size isn't that huge. Sure, some people will find the difference useful, but for most people, that really shouldn't be a deal-breaker. Not that long ago (until 5Ds showed up), D800 was the MP king and the mark IV is now only 6mp shy off D800's 36mp. I guess we got really spoiled :)

Terrific video. You take the spec sheets for each camera, write them on a piece of cardboard and recite them back. Added value is next to nil. But, judging by the number of views, there are plenty of people out there who cannot compare two spec sheets on their own. So I guess there is a market for this kind of "expertise". Currently, you could not get the D850 if you wanted it due to supply issues. It is a great camera, but the 5D MK IV is not too shabby. The only thing is I wish Canon would stop using the anti-alias filter. Other than that, if you never saw the specs on either camera, I believe most of us would be happy with either one. Myself included, I wonder if we get hung up on specs instead of our skills. When the D810 came out, Canon responded a few months later with the 5DS and 5DS/R. I have to believe that Canon will announce and/or have available upgrades to these cameras within a few months. Cant see going wrong with either camera. Don't see the cost justification of selling one system to switch to another because of the 5d MK IV. Unless Canon really drops the ball with their next high pixel upgrade, don't see I real need to switch. Either way, I see both as great choices with an edge to Nikon at this time until the next Canon upgrade. Remember, Nikon was being knocked a few months ago and they came out with the great D850. Lets see how Canon responds.

Agreed about the AA filter. I think it's safe to say that the camera world has moved on. The benefits to not having one now outweigh any advantages in having one.

Wouldn't one expect a brand new camera to have better specs than a 1+ year old camera?

They may be a year apart, but the 5D MK IV is the Canon counterpart to the Nikon D850 so it makes sense to compare them. It's like comparing the 1DX MK II and the D5. It's interesting to see how they stack up against one another.

Hey Jared!, nice compare video, my congratulation to you. I'm from Argentina and I am planning to buy a Full Frame cqmera in a few months. I'm currently Canon user with my T4i lol, great camera. What Canon or Nikon camera do you recommend me for Birding, Wildlife and Landscape? I have 3 canidadates: Nikon D850, Canon 5DSR and Canon 5D Mk IV. I was always interested in 5DSR, but it does not have good quality with high ISO's. If you had to photograph the milk way, surely a D85o or 5D Mk IV works better than the 5DSR. In conclusion, what camera do you recommend me?, forget the crop factor b/c i love too the portrait photos. Thanks again!!! Federico Marenzi

That battery grip deal on the d850 was an excellent choice by their team in terms of marketing. It creates a clean upgrade path by requiring you to buy the d5 battery/charger! Both companies are great, but Canon has to step it up a notch in that and the memory cards.

Hi Jared, I like your work and thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a question. Now that Nikon come up with the Mirrorless DSLR, do you think they'll still make the mirrorred cameras such as a D850 replacement. Thank you for your time.

Seeing all the features of the D850 makes me wonder what Canon is doing all day long. The Mark IV came out barely a year ago and is WAY behind the new Nikon! It's like they're sabotaging themselves!

but pentax won by far on the sensor side (for half of the price) : dynamic range, high iso, colors ... which put Canon in a ridiculous situation when you think it's about taking photo in first place :D But shooting in focus fake 4K might have interest, I won't say opposite

Wins doesn't really say it very well. How about the Canon got shot down and pissed on. That's a little more accurate.

I'm using the Nikon D850. I'm very much impressed with the picture quality and performance, but when it comes to shooting videos it's a struggle. The Autofocus in the D850 is so confusing and we can't trust on it. It keeps hunting always. Can you do a video about the Nikon D850 video autofocus and to resolve the issues.

no. this feature isn't that important. everybody is talking about dynamic range instead to learn to set the settings right I don't care about dynamic range to much because if you know how to work with your camera you really don't need to.

so, u are not a landscape photographer.
@deyvu7 жыл бұрын
i do sometimes landscapes I use my tripod, do multiple raw shots with different exposure and put them together in Lightroom also the most cameras have the option to do In-camera HDR. as i said: you have to know how to use the camera you have. the cameras these days already are capable of a lot and a pretty high dynamic range. it is indeed nice to have more but if you NEED more then... the best photos are thoose which don't need a lot of editing to look awesome.

I would go for the Nikon D850. My girlfriend and I shoot weddings, I own a D750,, she owns a D610. It would be a magnificent upgrade from the D610 to the D850 for her. I probably wouldn't have to wash the dishes for about half a year either! So it's a win win :)

So I am a Canon user, but I only have an APS-C Camera. I've been wanting to upgrade to full frame, but so far all new Canon cameras that came out were a bit disappointing (I do both video and photography, and no camera was really satisfying in both areas). Now that I see how amazing the D850 is I am seriously considering switching. Would that be a good idea considering I won't be able to use my APS-C gear anymore anyways? I do have 2 full-frame lenses however. I'm kind of torn - I honestly like Canon and they have a great lens selection, but I can't just keep staying with the hoping for a satisfying new camera someday when Nikon steps up and gets stuff like the D850 out.

Try the 5D4, hire one, use it, like it, It's a great camera, really great, and personally I couldn't wish for anything more. There are also a lot of people here who have to defend their Nikon purchases and comments like crippled, Nikon all day, Nikon running the race alone are kind of stupid and childish, the end result is what matters and Canon gives me the colours, the sharpness and faithful reproduction of the scene I shot. As for viewing on an iPad, for heavens sake, get a 27" high res monitor and see your photos pop ...
@thingsdemystified5 жыл бұрын
Just sell all your Canon stuff on eBay. It's so easy to switch systems especially if you don't really have that much stuff. Even if you already had all the main lenses, you could still switch.

The successor of the 5D IV, namely the EOS R had even lower specs than the 5D IV. The R5 was the camera which punched things forward. But when I looked at the prices in this video and at the R5 price when launched…

I'd say the Nikon seems better for photos and video, BUT I have used Canon and I have used Nikon, the Nikon DSLRs have a very confusing messed up UI... Also yes, the autofocus of the Nikon one is its weak point... Now if you can live with those two, then go and buy the Nikon since it's actually better, especially in video, but let me tell you that using Canon is a less stressful way of doing things.
