Interesting video Ben, and thanks for the shout-out... it's frustrating that the 1080p options disappear when you mount an EF-S lens to the RP, but the bigger issue is that you're no longer using the full area of the sensor. When you mount an EF-S lens, it enters into a cropped mode and acts as if it had an APSC sensor - so there's no benefit over an APSC camera, like the 80D. There will only be a benefit to a full-frame sensor over a cropped one if you use all of it, which means using EF or RF lenses. Of course as you pointed out, that means APSC owners like you would have to swap the body AND the lenses in order to enjoy the full-frame benefit, at which point you might well ask, why not switch to a different full;-frame system, like Sony. I feel the RP only makes sense if you have a collection of mostly EF lenses, not EF-S lenses.

Well put. I was lucky enough to heed the warnings of other seasoned photographers when I decided to buy into Canon about 10 years ago. Eventually many enthusiasts will end up buying full frame....so all this expense is spared if you buy FF lenses from the start. Having said that, I've just bought an 80D to compliment my 6D...and give further reach. Do you know of any ef-s lenses that would be a better purchase (In terms of image quality/sharpness/micro contrast) than a similar ef lens ?
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
@@thelifeofjools8384 one of the most infuriating things is Canon never made an EF-S lens of L-specifications, because L is for full-frame only. So none of the EF-S lenses have weather sealing or their best designs. The exception which Ben points out is that the STM motors on most of their EF-S zooms are very smooth and quiet, making them ideal for video use, more so than standard USM motors (albeit not the nano-USM models which do both well). But video focusing aside, I can't think of an EF-S lens which out-performs the best EF models. But obviously if you want really wide coverage to counteract the crop sensor, then you'll get it cheaper, smaller and lighter in the EF-S mount. As a PS, I'd mention Sigma has several amazing lenses designed for APSC bodies.

@@cameralabs Both Nikon and Canon want people to buy into their FF cameras. Providing a range of premium APS-C lenses discourages that. I suspect that there are technical reasons Canon crops 4K, and why Canon hasn't done it to pundits' expectations. Heat generation would be one, from my reading it's not just Sony cameras that get hot. In the time since I got seriously into digital photography, Canon hasn't had a recall that I've heard of. Its cameras work, apart from some minor firmware problems. Ok, the original M wasn't great. Nikon has had dodgy shutters, oil spots, a failed mirrorless system and no good mirrorless cameras at all, up to the Zed system. Sony had, maybe still has, poor support, poor weather sealing, for year people joked "Another week, another Alpha 7," overheating.

The RP did get a firmware update after I made this video - which allows for 24fps. The RP and The R (which I use) both shoot 4K but there is still a massive crop on it. Hi Edward, since making this video I invested in the Eos R (I think I made a video about that). Since it is 2020 there are impending camera releases from Canon, which will drop the price of the cameras. Although the Eos RP didn’t come out looking great in the video of mine (in terms of video spec) the EOS R is a great camera. I have used it on a weekly basis and have done so for nearly a year now. But I rarely use it with my EFS lenses, as it crops in and isn’t really benefitting from being a full frame camera if it does that. The EOSR has a cropped mode built in, should you want to shoot HD It gives you a 1.6 zoom for video. Send me an email or other of you want to ask specific questions about lenses and compatibility. Note that Canon also support 24fps since I made this video.

Hi Erick, I have since this video posted a video called gear vs creativity. You will see that I ended up getting the EOS R. This takes EF, EF-S and their new mirrorless lenses, which gives a lot of flexibility. Note that EF-s lenses will force the camera into a cropped mode for stills, but for video that is just fine. The EOS R is definitely an upgrade to the 70/80D, even my old 5Dmk2 was better video quality, but now you have face and eye detection, plus amazing low light and all of the features that the 5d4 has; and you will quickly adapt to teh new features as a long term Canon user. I had the 90D in my hands last week, as Gordan Laing is testing it, so check out cameralabs YT channel for the review of that for video. In terms of lenses, yes if you go full frame there are no stabilised wide lenses that have STM quiet focusing capabilities, but with the right shotgun mic the 16-35 f2.8 I finf is my go to vlogging/video lens, then the 24-105 f4 is. I have kept my 24mm pancake EFS lens, and and the 10-18mm to use on the EOS R. Does this answer any of your question?
@TheMezaFamily5 жыл бұрын
I have a question: I’m thinking of buying the EOS R BUT I want to use my lenes from my canon 80d... I know the R is a full frame and the 80D is not! It’s possible that I will need some sort of adapter, if so, will I lose any resolution or clarity when shooting video if I use a adapter? Thanks in advance!
@benharveyphotography5 жыл бұрын
Hello. You will need to make sure that the adaptor (which there is only one, which adaptor R-mount to EF & EF-S lenses) is included in the bundle that you buy, or you buy it separately. For video and stills note that the camera will crop in when you put a cropped sensor lens on. This is fine for video, as you can still get the same resolution (1080/4K) out of the sensor (it just used the pixels in the centre of the sensor), however for stills that means you are going to lose resolution, which is not good and it is not something that I would do. It doesn't mean that you need to spend a load of money to get good quality images out of the EOS R though, you could mount the Canon 50mm F1.8 STM on it and that is full frame.

Investing in EF-S lenses is a path that leads to misery and sadness. The whole point of canon ef-s is to try out photography, see if you actually like it before investing in a full frame body and maybe eventually L lenses - I don't understand why you would keep buying ef-s glass as I've read many commenters have in this video. If you have a crop sensor camera, whether it be a t6i or a 7dmkii or a 90d, if you're taking it serious, you're definitely buying the 16-35 maybe some primes to just going the classic 24-105 route and just dealing with the crop until you purchase a full frame body.

Why would you use EF-S lenses on a full frame camera. Aren’t you gonna a shadow around the edges?
@benharveyphotography5 жыл бұрын
@rRUNNERGY - it is a good question, why take lenses that were made from one sensor size and use it on another. The answer is that Canon only make one full frame lens that had silent focusing and image stabilisation, released at the same time as the 6D mk2. I don’t own this lens, because 24-105 on a cropped sensor camera (80D) is a bit of a weird focal range. So you are stuck with EF-S lenses for filming yourself with autofocus and stabilisation. The EF lenses just have too much glass to move when focusing and you can hear it when filming, unless you are very careful. The other advantaged is that they are relatively cheap and light-weight. It depends what your needs are.

If you shot an entire video in 30fps then it could work, but typically I mix the footage from multiple cameras, and the rest are set to 25fps. It's really annoying that Canon acts against their customer base. Sony has made some mistakes in the past (poor battery, overheating) but at least they are trying to satisfy their clients and they made a huge progress. Same with FujiFilm, they improve their cameras even after release by adding new features in the firmware, while Canon only fix some minor issues at best and charge for other (c-log for 5Dmk4). Instead of innovating and improving new cameras they introduce some very small incremental changes, lagging few years behind their competitors. And it's not that we didn't tell them what we want, it's not that technology isn't there yet, it's by design, like they afraid to cannibalise their pro systems if they give us too much and that's simply wrong, because competition is growing and we can keep our glass using adapters. RP is a ridiculous example of their practice of over promise and under deliver by artificially crippling technology. It seams they care about their shareholders more than clients. Sad.
