Canon C70 in 2023 // Still worth buying even with the Canon 200 Mark II ahead?

Great video again Paule! It would be really cool to see Canon go for a unified cinema line. It seemed like they headed that way with the C300iii/500ii but it was late in the game being EF mount. A unified RF cinema line would be cool and the difference be the sensors and frame rates, but bodies be the same. Similar to how RED did with DSMC2 so accessories could be used among all bodies. Its a dream and I am well aware of that hahaha

Nailed the C70. “Organic image”. Exactly correct Not overly enhanced or saturated. Built in ND. Great high frame rates. Great log and raw. Pro audio And if you swing that way… great auto focus. Plus small and reliable. The only issue is the crappy screen which surely needs a hood of loupe of some sort. Otherwise quite good

Spot on. Love the C70 image and if you use the new Canon Rec709 codec it punches up the contrast and takes a couple steps away in post image correcting. Great start!

Great video Paule. I recently published a similar video, though I went the other direction and picked up a pair of C200b at their current price of just $2500 per. Ive had them about a month now and so far have only used them for youtube stuff, but I'm 1000% satisfied. At just $2500, that's a LOT of camera. I'd go so far as to say the best deal in cine cams I've ever seen (Komodo is a close second).

@@pauleporterdp Yeah, really the ONLY thing wrong with C200 is the lack of a 10-bit intermediate codec, although it does output 10bit 1080p over SDI and HDMI which is perfect for streaming. For recording though, 4K 12 bit RAW is its highest and best use, and the 12 but image is lovely. I'll keep my ear to the ground for the new C200 though as it might be a better pairing with R5C. I've tried using the R5C with C70 before, and R5C is WAY sharper. Using EF lenses helps soften it a bit though.

I picked up a c200 recently to go along with my c70 as well. I actually prefer shooting with the c200 because of the overall robustness of the body and evf. Image wise, the only time I can really tell a difference when shooting in raw vs the 10 bit c70 is in dark situations where you can tell the c70 has an extra stop or so of detail in the shadows.

Hi, Paul. Great video! Having C70 fills me with warmth. Just have one question: about the lens. In this video, I see you have attached Carl Zeiss Planar 50 1.4. Please, tell us, why did you decide to buy it, instead of Canon RF or EF lenses. I have a couple of RF and EF lenses, but still missing the best wide-angle lens. Which one do you recommend for landscapes, architecture, etc.? Thanks beforehand and good luck.

Thanks mate, yes that’s right it’s simply because I love Vintage lenses they have so much character which gives the image a certain look you don’t achieve with modern stills lenses. I also love my Vespid Cine primes since they also render the image nicely. I mostly don’t like modern stills glass since it doesn’t provide any feeling or impact on the image they’re without character is probably the best description. Personally I would get the Laowa 12mm zero D lens it is an awesome wide angle

Curious if you found the c70 monitor's luminance setting, I know a lot of operators who missed it, and since it's actually adjusting the backlight it makes a massive difference when shooting outdoors.

Thanks yes I know the luminance of the monitor is totally fine. But still having a viewfinder is better 😉

I follow 2 people who have switched to the fx6. Both said it's better because of the ergonomics but the image quality is about the same. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Fx6 is full frame and has the electronic NDs.

C70 and C200 are not made for the same thing. C70 and it's successors will always be the best for solo shooters, which is most of the people using these cameras.

I don’t like the C70s form factor, but I can’t see myself getting a C200 even at the fire sale price it’s going for, and I also don’t see myself spending >$8k on an EF mount camera in 2023…you don’t get autofocus on PL, obviously, and AF is part of why one buys Canon. Might as well buy an Ursa Mini in that case for half the price.

Sad to say, but never saw a really cool image from the C70 (same with any Сanon camera). Yes, it's pretty cool for a social media stuff, weddings etc, but in terms of the image's reachness it's literally on the same level with Sony's FX line. Harsh HL roll off, weak subtonal range, horrible rolling shutter. In other words, not cinematic. And I think that C200mk2 wouldn't change this issue. Who really cares about the 6K or 8K? I personally would like to see even a 2K sensor, but with ALEV capabilities in
