I used to be a total gear nut when I started 10 years back. As I grow further in my career, the less concerned I am about equipment and brand. Gear-wise, I’ve gone into a similar path - started with a Canon 30D back in 2012 because that was what’s available for me at the time when I wanted to learn photography. Upgraded to a 50D when it broke 2 years later, started doing paid jobs. Got a 5D Mark II in 2018 - and yes, it was funny how overblown the AF issues were. If you knew what you were doing, even focusing an 85 1.2 with the outer AF points worked. I sold my Canon gear in 2021 because I wasn’t using them - I got a full-time job in a studio in 2019 and the equipment was provided. I started using the Nikon system then - first the D800, then took the D850 when most of the people left after the pandemic. As we rebuilt the business and started hiring junior photographers again, it’s funny how they were complaining about how terrible the D800 is. I’ve shot with my personal 5D Mark II side by side with the D850 for weddings and both are amazing cameras. Just took a little more effort in extreme low-light scenarios with the older camera. Its sad how reliant on gear some photographers are. I’ve since moved to a different company, and the photo cameras are 5D Mark IIIs. A lot older than what I had been used to, but still gets the job done and with no complaints from the client - that’s all that matters!

I started with an EOS R mirrorless and was ridiculed (slightly) by the R3 and R5 people constantly reminding me of the things my camera cannot do, and yes only one SD card slot. I shoot 10 to 20 photos on a shoot in a full day, they do 500 - 1500 photos. I create the image and get excellent results, they spray and pray. I love what you say. So refreshing, Invest in what you have and not keep changing. There are not really any bad cameras anymore, just bad photographers who cannot settle.

When I got my current job. They only use Canon cameras (R6). I was a Nikon D3300. It was a steep learning curve. Now it feels like a second nature. But your words make all the sense to me and I can identify with them. The camera is just the box that holds the image. I make the same type of pictures with either one. Thanks again for the video 😊

Woweeeee, wow wow. I really love this video. At one point I almost fell into the "I have to keep up with the Joneses(KZbinrs)" mentality. A lot of them was talking about techniques in wedding photography and then switched to gear review like someone else already mentionned. I was following them since they had that going for them, plus they used the same gear as me. Then the whole I'm switching brands and only doing gear reviews started coming in so fast I started thinking the same way... I needed this video then. Good thing something got smacked into me(maybe it was lack of $$$ to be switching systems, and some other videos) but I'm glad I didn't for the same reasons you mentionned in this video. I started thinking more about how I can improve my craft and how to get better doing weddings and my workflow. It was time well spent rather than focusing on gear. I hope those who are at the same crossroads find your video to get them back on the right track. I will be sticking with Canon because I'm too lazy to learn another system, and I work less on getting to the look I am looking for.

I get what you're saying. I have always had a love for cameras, and once I got to a point in my life, where I could afford to pick up second hand versions of various cameras, I did just that, because I'm interested in how they work and what the differences are between different types and brands of cameras. As a result I have a bit of a collection, and I keep changing my daily carry every or every other week. I thought for sure, I would loose out in getting to really know one camera or camera system. But, I have come to the conclusion, that today I'm pretty much able to pick up any camera and produce photos, I think look great. It's not, that I remember all the details of different systems, it has just become easy - perhaps because I have been doing it like this for years. The Konica Big Mini... If my own was still reliable, I'd be carrying it every day. I'm still testing other compact film cameras to find a replacement for mine - perhaps my Nikon AF3 will turn out to be the reliable one for now...

Still love using my Nikon D200, similar philosophy it just feels like an extension of my brain, from the perfect grip to the excellent button layout in my hands, I've gotten more incredible shots from this old cam than any other new camera. I've owned Pentax 645Z, Nikon D810, Canon 1D mark iii etc, and sure the resolution iso etc is better but at the end of the day its a tool and the less that gets in the way of you capturing a moment is far better than any upgrade on paper.

I’ve shot for years on a Panasonic Point and shoot from Japan. Them switched on a Trip there to a japan exclusive Pana Bridge. They were awesome for what I needed. When my needs grew a bit bigger I changed to sony. Just because I can get with a a7III a decent hybrid for Video and Foto. And also I can use old Minolta Glass, Old A Mount Glass from Sony and the newer ones. Wich I really like. But I gotta say: I’m mostly in Love with lenses. So the reason when Sony Clicked was when I used the 90mm Macro with the a7III in the Store. And still love this lens… it’s practically glued to my Camera with the 200-600.

couldn't agree More. the amount of milage and money earned from my first Nikon d700 12mp is what made me stick with Nikon, had the lenses, easy upgrade to d850, doesn't feel as good as my rz67 or my sinar, but it is a professional tool, and does the work with minimum wasted time. I don't use 90 percent of the menu's, speed aperture iso and focus. great video and great channel.

When I bought my first "serious" digital camera in 2015, it was based on just two things:- 1. What did it feel like in the hand 2. Did I have any lenses from my extensive film camera collection that were compatible. I spent ages looking at various brands and models, and most were very nice. I particularly liked the Canon 6D. However, as I had a good number of Pentax and Nikon lenses and no EF ones, it had to be one of those brands that I got into. Well, the Nikon offerings simply did not fit my hands and Pentax did. So that is the camera I bought (a K3 which i still have and love) and the system I stick with. Sure I have meddled and flirted with other systems just for curiosity as I am now in a financial position to do so, but I still would take my Pentax stuff over all the others if push came to shove, though I really do like my Fujifilm X-T1 and a few primes for just carrying about willy nilly, as I have grown to know the system, the controls and menus. Sure there are some obvious faults with the system (AF ahem), but also some very good advantages (backward compatibility for lenses, excellent handling and build). I am sure though, had I had a couple of EF lenses, I could well be a Canon fanboy now, though I would not trade a FF DSLR for a FF mirrorless system. I find there is something special about a real, proper sized OVF.

Fit, feel, and fluency are things you can't get ftom a spec sheet. I don't do much studio work. I do a lot of events, indoors, poor lighting and, unpredictable lighting and opportunity. A key feature for me is on-camera flash. Not the pointless pop-up flashes, but a powerful accessory flash, often on a bracket with a TTL cord extension. I have tried a lot of brands and techniques in the last few decades. Nikon has been the one that has been most consistent to the point that I trust it for wedding and baptism photos. Sony, Canon, Minolta, Pentax, Hasselblad, Mamyia, kyocera/yashica/contax, Olympus, and Rollei all had various TTL offerings, and the one that survived for me was Nikon. I still have and use other cameras, more a hobby than a business now, and i use them because i like them, but when i need flash, it has consistently been nikon that delivers for me. A different subject matter, or a different market may have steered choices a different way. I may be a camera snob, but have never been a brand bigot. Use what works for you. While i do tend to agree about no single system gets a blanket "better" label, there are some things that are brand-unique that may be a significant advantage to a particular task. The haters whining about specs, or autofocus points, or face detection just elude me. What did they do before? How are these features make or break now, but didn't exist just a few years ago? For 180 years we have had practical photography and now some of our community screams "I can't work like this!" over the burden of having to use such primitive hardware that they may have to manually select a focus point.

I started on Canon and built my kit around Canon. Rebel xT, 7D, and then the 5D Mk III. I recently learned my 5D Mk III is unrepairable and so, it’s time to upgrade. I know and love DSLR, so the 5D Mk IV seems the next logical step; however, the R6 is the same price, and so I’ve been stuck trying to decide which to go with. Thanks to your video, I now feel the 5D Mk IV is the way in need to go.

I too just happened to stumble upon Canon when I was in a big box store and I decided to buy a camera to take photos of the music events I was hosting at my coffee shop. I'm pretty sure the Canon kit was like $10 cheaper than the Nikon kit so that was why I went with Canon. Purchased a couple of L lenses and shot on that shitty 400D for 12 years. I got some great shots too I might add. I finished a big project at my day job and the powers that be rewarded me with a very large Amazon gift card. I would have preferred money since that is what I have my day job for. Since I couldn't make a mortgage payment with an Amazon gift card I bought a new camera body. I should have got a 5D Mark but I stupidly went for an R and while it has been years I still struggle with the EVF and the goofy quirks of mirrorless. Not to mention going from a crop sensor camera to a full frame screwed up my brain as far as reach was concerned in my little music venue. I honestly still think I took better photographs with my cheap APSC camera than I do with my mirrorless Canon.

For me (wildlife/bird) photography is just a hobby to relax. Despite that, your videos are really interesting and I think I can learn a lot. I really got into that hobby around 2 years ago, so there is really much to learn. Interestingly not so much about the gear anymore. What I have, is good enough (Used 5D Mk IV - that one will last for years to come). But more about learning to find good locations with birds/wildlife. Composition of the image. Which month of the year, which time of the day, planning ahead where the sun will be for good light, where will be the proper place to get images. Animal behavior. The newest, best and most expensive gear can't compensate the lack of that knowledge.

I'm also a hobbyist bird photographer. Completely agree with everything you've said. I bought a used 7DmkII and haven't looked back. The only thing that MIGHT improve my photography is upgrading my Sigma 150-600 to the L-series 600mm prime glass. I doubt it will really make a drastic difference though. All of my best photos are of perfectly timed bird behaviour with beautiful light, which has nothing to do with my gear and everything to do with planning and technique. Having 45 MP (or more) would be cool, but I doubt I'd really use it all that much other than to aggressively crop near-miss shots. That being said, nothing is as blatantly cool as being able to "zoom in" either optically or digitally, so I'll probably upgrade at some point when budget allows just for the fun of it.

I have been using a Canon EOS60D since 2012. Didn't feel the need to upgrade when the EOS70D, 80D and 90D came along. Now that all new Canon cameras are of the mirrorless type, I reckon I'll be holding onto my 60D indefinitely. Incidentally Canon is the only Japanese camera maker to continue manufacturing their cameras in Japan, when Sony and Nikon make theirs in Thailand, Fujifilm in China and Pentax in the Philippines. For this reason it makes Canon kind of special to me.

However, 60th on flash is a little slow. Canon EOS was a major switch in design and function leaping ahead of the competition until the mirror-less era. Great videos! Personally I think you have to have a good eye, good timing, good subject (or VERY GOOD eye), then give it some thought, and have a willingness to work it. I once knew a woman who looked exactly like Miss Piggy from the Muppet Show. She had basically the same face shape, same long hair, she used to flip her head and hair just like Miss Piggy, and same body. I could not imagine any good photo of her. She got married, temporarily, to my cousin, she later left him, but there were some wedding photos. The shot in the local paper was unreal, not the same woman at all. She was shot in profile, and she looked great, really great. So, talent, skill, patience can get you some really unreal results. Miss Piggy went on to abandon my cousin after he had done everything for her, including rehabbing and entire house, moving after that to some other place she wanted, and then having her move again a third time. He even bought her a Corvette, not new but very classic. He could do no more. She even had this shit little dog he had to deal with. We all drank too much at his bachelor party, since we all knew it would go bad. He was doomed. Yes, he had escaped her clutches several times in the years before they got married, even moved 1200 miles away, but she pursued him for years. She moved to follow him! Once she had him, and he gave her everything, she wanted to move on. She was a nut-job. Poor guy was worn out I guess. It was a nice photo though. Really nice job. High price in pain and suffering for some though. He learned a hard lesson. As for me, I would not have given that broad a second look, and sure as hell would not have touched her even for money. She was not attractive, BUT her personality was repulsive, and man, if that is not there, there is nothing for you to even consider. In the end, the stuff on the inside is the most important. Lots of great looking women are really kind of shit. Not all, but quite a few.

My favourite thing about you is you are NOT about the gear. So many KZbinrs who started off talking about the craft and then got subscribers and went full time gear review. And I get it, money is money and its fun to try new lenses but truthfully as someone who used to collect gear, I want like maybe 6 AF lenses and 1 camera and nothing more. It is so much better to master a few lenses then have so many lenses that everytime you use them its like you're testing them out again for the first time.

I follow the idea that the camera should not be an obstacle between the photographer and the image he is taking, but I am very technical about my photography. I wanted to know at which aperture is each of my lenses the sharpest, at which exposure time is the readout noise the lowest and of course at which ISO is the dynamic range the best. Since Canon EOS 5d MarkII i shared the sentiment that there is little to nothing to be done for a better photography, and I do believe that its still great camera for pro work. Much later I understood that way to go is miniaturization. Smaller and lighter bodies, smaller and lighter lenses. Somehow for me it was Olympus from 2015 up until 2019. The newer OM-1 became bestseller in whole M43 segment, but I own M1x and M5.MkIII. Both have same image quality, first one is class of its own in terms of build, the second follows the ethos of light and compact pro-grade camera. What is interesting that when people compare images from this Olympus generation cameras, they use word "organic", and I have to agree. I used to be film purist before sensors got better, but it was Olympus which allowed me to make and edit photos which really have look like a photography prior to digitalization. Therefore I believe that the tools are important to a certain extent.

Problem is I don't like making it more compact, I have big hands and using a full frame DSLR without a portrait grip feels like a small camera to me, especially when I need to use it fluently. Lighter might mean more brittle.. I think the big mag alloy cameras will always have a place in the lineup, especially now that we get to see the R3 and Z7 and such doing just that into mirrorless where you don't need any of the bulk.

My biggest problem at the moment is the dynamic range....I shoot both video and stills. After shooting the video I have to change the lighting to get my stills. Alexa, Komodo, c300MKIII all cameras have more usable DR. I dont know why they can not match the dynamic range on stills camera to video cameras. No complains after the r5 on canon autofocus :) I am glad those horror days missing focus are over - specially getting older, it is easier on the eyes after a long day shooting.

It is true that the equipment today is all very similar, but there are still differences and some are substantial. If you haven't already done so you should edit a file from your 5DSR and any GFX (even the older GFX50s) and you'll see that they are very different. The editing flexibility without degradation is superior in Fujifilm's GFX line. Cheers.

Instead of you getting 2 Canon 5D Mark II's you should just have the one - and the next upgrade path should always aiming to improve the prime camera - example Single Canon 5D Mark II & upgrade to single Canon 5D Mark IV using Canon 5D Mark II as backup , then next upgrade to Mirrorless R5 Mark II to have the Canon 5D Mark IV, as backup. You can't deny the new object and eye focus is game changer. In 10 photos you get 7/10 keepers with the old tech, with mirrorless you will get 10/10

All your said is what matters to you or your type of photography. It won't be the same for everyone. Canon R5, R6 and RF lenses bring one to a totally new world and they won't waste time as a new commer will learn from that level of technical sophistication. So, I didn't find this video anyway convincing.

Is there some audio bleed between your last video and this one, Scott? It sounds like the audio from the last few moments of that video (the one about Saturdays) begin this one. Maybe there's.a glitch in the Matrix or it's a very deep reference to Pink Floyd's The Wall. Hopefully it's the latter because otherwise I may need to see a psychiatrist. Great video as always.

Audio seems out of sync- by several seconds. I assume it is the cameras to the left of the screen that give you naughty thoughts, if not the manual film cameras that have disappeared from sight by the time you say this, by which point you are already gesturing to your 5D rig. Great content, though!

This is all common sense but it describes ideas and practices which are Revolutionary to some. When I got back into photography about ten years ago, after a 20-30 year gap, I ended up buying a Canon mainly because I bought a Canon fTb in the 1970’s. I guess I was programmed to be a fanboy.

@ritrattoaziendale
@ritrattoaziendale Жыл бұрын
@@jimgsewell usually at the tether station there's the digital/retoucher/assistant, or at least someone who can check your exposure and the focus, things that are not 100% safe when seen from the camera display by the shooter. Then, depends on your work: if I'm taking portraits/headshots/editorial, surely I'm on camera using the viewfinder, and someone else is at tether station and checking stuff for me, while if you're doing products/food/jewels/etc, especially if the set is complicate and crowded, then is more common for the photographer to be at the station, even using the monitor has a viewfinder, but it's not the rule. You may tether on a corporate headshot session with multiple people just to show pics on a bigger screen, so they can review them immediately and choose the one they prefer. There are so many motivation to tether without the obligation of using the screen as the viewfinder 🙂

I don't see anything wrong with being a fanboy. That means passion, and passion leads to good images. I have Canon (5Ds) and Nikon (D800e) that I use the most. I like them about the same. I agree that you can do good work with any camera. Steve O'Nions and Ari Jaaksi make breathtaking images with Holgas and pinhole cameras. If zillion dollar equipment was needed to make good images, then that would not be possible. A ten thousand dollar camera will not turn a bad photographer into a good one and a good photographer can make nice images with almost any camera. Which is not to say that a bad photographer cannot become a good one. Just that the path to better photography is not paved with expensive equipment.
