Thanks for mentioning the leaf shutter, with the tiny accessory flash attached, shooting fill flash in daylight is great and is something few current cameras can do. Years ago, i used to shoot with a flash in broad daylight with my Zeiss Ikon Contessa, and i do now with my Lumix LX100 mk i in the same way. I bought an LX100 for a NYC trip in 2019 and fell in love with it. I'm glad Leica has continued with the camera with minimal changes to the controls, the controls are absolutely fantastic for making changes while shooting without fussing with menus or unmarked dials. Considering the capabilities of the camera, which aren't easy to know without using it, the price is a bargain, in my opinion.

My LX100's sensor is filled with dust and essentially usable after f/4. I would buy this camera, or the Panasonic version when it comes out, if the sensor was perfectly sealed from outside dust. Otherwise, I find it hard to pay from a camera whose dusty sensor I can't clean.

I've posted this elsewhere but in the light of this review, I think it worth repeating here: I think that Leica may have missed a trick. Had they given it an APC sensor, I think they would have blown the Fuji VI out of the water. You used the term "gateway drug" ... I reckon that would be a gateway drug to the Leica systems. They obviously couldn't do a full frame version because that would wreck sales of the Q3 (and I'd be very surprised if there were ever to be a Q zoom because that would hammer M sales). But I reckon a zoom APC compact from Leica really would be the bee's knees.
@GrainOnTheGo5 ай бұрын
It already exists in the form of the Leica CL, which to be fair is in dire need of a refresh.
@acliffalay5 ай бұрын
If they did release an APC sensor version, they would need to design a brand new lens, which would be much larger to offer similar wide apertures, the body would likely be larger, and would therefore be significantly more expensive compared to the X100VI. There is a wide gap in Leica's 'entry level' offerings in terms of price, so a £2500 Leica APS-C compact would have a distinct price point in their line up, but would put it in a completely different price category to the other enthusiast compacts like the Ricoh, X100VI.
@GrainOnTheGo5 ай бұрын
@@acliffalay it literally already exists in the form of the Leica CL they just haven’t touched that system in years.
@acliffalay5 ай бұрын
@@GrainOnTheGo I am aware of the Leica CL, but given that it has interchangeable lenses, its not really in the same market segment. Also it retailed for around $2795 body only, you'd have to factor in lens costs on top. Maybe the best comparison within Leica is the Leica X Series, APC fixed lens, with a variety of fixed focal length and zoom ranges. The X Vario was a lovely looking thing. Note the size of the 28-70mm lens, and the slow aperture range required for an APS-C zoom.
@AndyKevill5 ай бұрын
@@acliffalay I agree about the lens requirement (obviously) but I reckon that if Leica did produce such a camera and kept the price low (-ish) specifically with the intent to make life as difficult as possible for the competition, they would sweep up all those who would like a Leica but aren't prepared/can't afford to buy into the M and SL systems and would at the same time create a really serious gateway drug for those systems. In terms of price they would need to go for a minimised profit in order to compete but I reckon it would be worth the effort.

Wonderful analysis of the DLux8 and its positioning and appeal. I have recently purchased the LX100 mk1 and mk ii and GX9 just because of the handling and styling - to add more fun back into the image taking experience that can be dulled by my other full frame and MFT cameras. For me, the unique appeal of the LX100 and the Dlux8 is the external aspect ratio control. This changes the way you approach image taking as you are thinking first about aspect rather than as a post production cropping exercise. There are also some nice monochrome options. Well done Leica! It's what the market wants and needs. Had just received my pre order email from local Leica store but already Sold Out when checking the order status!

My takeaway, which Hugh eloquently delivered at the very end, was simply that this new pocketable Leica "...maybe even rekindle one's sense of joy." As lucky as I have been to have photography and filmmaking as a means to make a good living and travel the world on my company's dime, deep down, I always knew that the innocent passion I once had for my pleasurable, inspired hobby might one day succumb to the temptations and seductions of "success". That if and when I allowed my passion for image-making to be turned into a career as a commercial/editorial photographer, I would risk the creative process becoming a dispassionate, cynical, bread-and-butter necessity. Which is exactly what happened. And despite several seemingly desperate attempts to rekindle my enthusiasm by switching platforms - not once, but three times: from Canon to Sony to Leica to Fuji, I still haven’t found my lost mojo. This D-Lux 8 might just be the antidote, the silver bullet, the prophylactic against the ongoing rot. Or not.

I bought the D-Lux 7, and the shutter speed dial goes to 1/4000th. The D-Lux 8 only shows 1/2000th, yet the content providers on KZbin are claiming the D-Lux 8 shutter tops out at 1/4000th. Who has the right answer? And why might Leica make this downgrade change?

I used pro-Nikon & Canon DSLR setups for years...then, one day...I bought a Leica Q2 Monochrom....WOW!....My first ever Leica and it changed everything for me! I was blown away by the image quality, build quality, ergonomic design, and sheer utter JOY factor of using this camera that I could take anywhere with me. I immediately started to understand why Leica has the reputation it has, totally deserved. That's why when I purchased a second-hand Dlux 7 as an accompaniment to the Q2, I was massively disappointed and immediately sold it, it definitely did not have the Leica 'package' to it, it felt cheaply built, something that I expect today from the Asian market camera manufacturers. It wasn't worthy of the RED dot, and not a nice experience to use. Looking at the Dlux 8, Leica seems to have made a good decision and created distance from that market, where they should never have their brand competing. Gibson Guitars did the same for many years and it nearly destroyed their brand, thankfully the new owners have corrected this. Nowadays if you want quality products, especially hand-built or assembled, they come with a heavy price tag, if you want cheap and affordable then expect low quality. It seems that with any product, there seems to be zero middle ground between the two nowadays as there once was years back, which is sad... that unfortunately is how the World is today. I'm fully aware that, unlike all other Leicas, this camera is built in China, but it's obviously tightly QC'd by Leica itself...unlike the Dlux 7 which looked like Panasonic had free reign over it. I'm very much looking forward to trying a D LUX 8 out. Nowadays, I own a Leica Q3 too, which is just phenomenal! They have created something truly amazing there. I also have a Fujifilm Xpro 3 which I love too, hoping for the release of the Xpro 4, but judging by the cheap build quality of their new release models, I'll probably be holding onto the Xpro 3 and further investing in Leica.

I'm a Leica shooter with an SL2 and Q2 but like to have a compact for when I want or need one. I'm contemplating trading the RX100 for the D-Lux 8 for a few reasons, but mostly because it's a Leica and also that it shoots in DNG format. I don't expect it to be an SL2 or Q2, but it would be nice to have the Leica experience with a small carry everywhere camera.

Hugh I totally LOVE your reviews but this one was a bit of a head scratcher. If you go to DPreview and use their side-by-side tool to compare the DLUX7 (I still own the earlier DLUX) and this DLUX 8 it's as you said essentially the same. The prints you gushed over could easily have been made with the PREVIOUS DLux 7. The key seems to be about the "experience" and gestalt which it appears is something to consider when it is SOOOOOO close in visual cues to the Q. If the processor is from the Q then THAT would be something. But there's no mention of that. It's essentially a Q-affied version of the previous DLUX. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
@3BMEP5 ай бұрын
As I said and you've recalled, Peter, some will say it's a Q-iffed D-Lux 7; again, like you, I found nothing objectionable in that categorization. For someone who likes the idea of the but is more budget constrained, a used '7 or LX100 II may indeed be a better option. It's all good!

@@3BMEP P..S. While I've watched (and loved) your fantastic honest reviews, I'm new to subscribe and that gave me the opportunity to post. I not sure you read the comment I made on your excellent take on the Sony A7CR. Thanks to your insights and thoughts I bought the A7CR along with the 50mm f1.2 Sigma based on your review and the samples (particularly the skate boarder in flight which the lens and YOU totally nailed!) that's like having a Noctilux with AF and the Sony 28mm f2 . Flickr is a great way to see the kinds of images lenses (and cameras) can produce. You should know I lusted for the Hasselblad 907X with either the 50mp back or the 100mp back. I've also lusted for the Leica Q3. I could afford neither. Your review gave me the idea that while I might not amass the elements of those wonderful cameras that generate a certain frisson of joy and inspiration to go out and use them (as you often say..."hold THAT thought!") I might be able get a BOGO. Here's what happened: I applied for an Adorama Edge card and was given a $5K balance. With that I bought the A7CR, the 50mm f1.2 Sigma Art, a used 28mm f2 Sony, and a Rapid Black "Metro" strap. (If you haven't guessedn already I think you cab guess where I'm going with this.) With the 50mm Sigma I set the aspect ratio to 1:1 and hold the camera vertically while flipping the rear LCD downward. This essentially (but, of course, not fully) re-creates the experience of using the 907X with the 80mm f1.8 XCD lens. It''s even about the same mass as that kit. A poor man's baby Blad. With the 28mm f2 Sony on board, I have a poor man's Q3 (remember it has a 61mp BSI sensor that could very well be the one in the Q3, it just doens't have the Leitz software touches). Do I mind the lesser EVF and rear LCD. Not really. Since the Lumix G1 which I bought after it appeared I use the EVF and LCD for basic composition and aiming. I use both eyes my free left eye for detail when using the A7CR as a Baby Blad, and the left eye for detail when it's like the Poor Man's Q. Noisy shutter. My god is it. Solution: for situations with subjects that are static or will have a peak pause or stealth is required, use the electronic shutter. For moving situations where Sony's unbeatable continuous AF running the show (and other situations where shutter noise will be unnoticeable) go mechanical. The touch screen is fantastic. And while the menu is vastly improved from previous ones and is still somewhat daunting, plow through it find the settings you want access to, to quickly re-adjust like aspect ratio or color/BW and set it up. For the rest keep the wheel access features as is and set C1 like you did. For other stuff use "auto". For the rest you can do what the late famous (or infamous) appliance huckster, Ron Popeil would say.."Set it. And forget it!" So, Hugh, thank you. Thank you. Thank you for your wisdom, advice, and brutally honest 360° reviews.

I am curious if they updated the auto lens cap to give a little more space to fit a filter. I recently put a polarizing filter on my DLux 7 and had to switch back to the standard lens ring and cap because the auto cap wouldn't close over it. And as a side note... I get it. I really enjoy my DLux 7 and am contemplating upgrading to the 8. I think people tend to get lost in the weeds in tech specs and forget about the holistic experience of using a camera. As you mention, this line certainly has shortcomings compared to other models (there's always something that does each individual thing better), but it has a lot of thoughtful, harmonious features which deliver a particular experience, and delivers it well. It is truly greater than the sum of its parts. You've got a very useful zoom range, great aperture, a good sensor/image quality, an excellent control layout/ergos (in my opinion), different aspect ratios, and crazy battery life all packed into an incredibly compact body for what it provides. I mean, where else are you going to find a zoom with that aperture on any other compact camera? Yes, it makes some sacrifices, but it does the job of a street/city/travel/daily carry camera exceedingly well.

I have the Leica D-Lux type 109 - the first of the series. It is such a fun camera to use. I use it for stills, time lapse and video and it delivers excellent results. I can't help but feel that most cameras companies have missed something whilst pursuing technological perfection. Leica and to a large extent Fuji seem to get the idea that the camera should instil joy in the user.

Thank you for the video. I ordered one in May hoping it would be just what you are suggesting it is. I love the image quality of my Sony a7rv but i can not stand the menu system. Everything in that camera gets in the way of enjoying the process. I have taken a long hard look at what i actually do with my photographs and realized that 61MP is a waste for me and my computer hard drive space. I am looking forward to getting the joy back in the process! And I am hoping the camera does not take too long to acctuallt ship!!

Great review. I own a LX100M2 and a Leica Q. The image quality from the Q is fantastic. It reminds me of Kodachrome, in many ways. The LX is great for shooting snap shots and fits in your pocket. They are both a lot of fun. Melding the two together is a great move by Leica. There is one thing though. The LX100M2 and the d Lux 8 are not weather sealed. I mention this because the lens extension and retraction when turning the cameras on and off is like a pump. I have had to send my LX100M2 in to have the sensor cleaned. Leica should find a way to prevent this problem. Otherwise, hats off to Leica.

I’ve been looking for a compact camera for video since the 7. I tired the 7 but the auto focus wasn’t good enough and the manual focus wasn’t linear so it wasn’t viable for me. Yes Sony’s ZV1 would be great but I have just heard so many things about reliability to not wanna try it. Canon’s GX7 III would be great if it had reliable auto focus or proper manual focus over the ring but it doesn’t. In the end the D-Lux 8 could be made to work if they’d fix the focus and include 1080p 24 frames. Because for a camera like this I really don’t see a point in shooting 4K for casual stuff.

Having bought the Leica Q and joined the Leica family, just by holding that camera and feeling the years of quality at my finger tips I instantly knew what all those years of hype about Leicas was really about. The D-Lux caught my attention instantly for it's size and weight and well because of it's pedigree. Micro 4/3's not withstanding is not an issue for me, it's about form factor weight and size. I like gritty images and I also always print my best shots. As I age I feel the need for less kit in my ever decreasing camera bag size and it's why I went mirrorless from it's inception. Thanks Hugh for your take on this camera. Always a pleasure to watch and particularly listen to your almost poetic descriptive style of delivery on cameras. Smooth as silk and effortlessly executed as always.

Lovely assessment of the Leica D-Lux 8, which I will likely buy if/when my LX100ii gives up the ghost. Your speculations about who might want and how they might use the D-Lux 8 strike me as correct. For me, my LX100ii is a long-time favorite camera to carry to parties and county fairs and the like, but also for maintaining my daily photo journal, and, as it happens, my favorite EDC is my Q2m and LX100ii. Lastly, the tiny flash is both functional and adorable and I wish like mad there was an equivalent for the Q line.

Im relatively young and learned photography on DSLRs, mostly as a hobby. I understand the potential but the size and heavy lenses were never something that felt natural. Aka user friendly all in one with the power of manual that is compact is very appealing to me. I also have always trouble/anxiety getting photos off the card/onto the computer so if the leica fotos app is able to aid the transition to Lightroom and give me more time to just take photos… I would be a happy camper. I may have to start saving for this.

If shooting film for for the last few years has taught me anything any larger sensor (4/3 and bigger) camera can take amazing images. The a99 I bought to go along with my old a mount sony/minolta lenses is all the full frame camera I need. That said I would still take an x100vi over this for similar money.

It will sell--but like hotcakes? Leica could not have offered a fixed-lens CL with a Q skin for a similar ticket? With the Maestro II processor? The target market does not print, really, do they? And if they do would they not prefer the definitely cool Leica Sofort 2? I'd be interested in an IQ comparison between this camera and an iPhone 15 Pro Max at 11x14 or even 15x20.

I own a D-Lux Typ 109 and a D-Lux 7. The latter has the same Sensor and Lens and Resolution. And the former has "only" 12MP and an older Sensor - which is BETTER in terms of the LEICA LOOK. Colors aren´t the same with the D-Lux 7 anymore, and although it´s great during Daylight and the Intelligent Zoom is way better than the one from the Typ 109. The Combination of Sensor and Lens are perfection in that one. If they haven´t made things more in the Direction of the Typ 109 with the D-Lux 8, no new Menu can sell it to me - and you can get 3 (!) used Typ 109´s for the same price as a D-Lux 8. Not that i´m biased or anything:).

So this D-Lux 8 is selling for about the same price as the Fuji X100VI. Seems like a much better bargain with the Leica zoom. M4/3 sensor is smaller but the lens is better. Do I sell my X100F (which is just fine to keep and use) and pony up the difference? Too bad they went the variable aperture route. F2.4 or 2.8 constant aperture should fit the body with the 24-75 (equivalent) zoom. Small nitpick here, TLDR; I want one. PS, I still use my Canon s100!😂

Careful! Leica is king when it comes to camera concepts, technical perfection, minimalistic design, ergonomics, durability, etc. But when it comes to electronics, their expertise is even below substandard. I got rid of all my Leicas that needed a batterie to function, because even with a new or freshly charged batterie, they were too often useless.

Thanks for doing this review. It's just what I needed. However, now that I'm an old guy, who owned Leica gear many decades ago, I think I may want to get this camera. With this limited info, do you think I should pursue a purchase? Cheers.

Enjoyable video as always! While I love my original LX100, the D-Lux 8's improved UI and menu system seems like it would resolve the few things I don't care for on the LX100 and could be a nice option if I upgrade. It really is a nice size for when I don't want to carry my Leica M system (and when I want more than my iPhone), plus the file size is fine for most of the prints I make.

I own a D-Lux 7. I love the compact size, the lens, and the tactile controls, but it’s such an annoying camera to use. This frustration comes from the amount of buttons, indicators, and software options to deal with. I mostly shoot film because it’s a simpler way to capture photos and stay in control at the same time. I always felt the D-Lux 7 provides a "you haven’t paid us enough to get less" kind of experience, and it’s frustrating. It’s called Leica, looks like a Leica, has a Leica lens, but feels like a Panasonic. That’s just not what I’m looking for in photography. I hope the D-Lux 8 is different. It looks like it is. Then I could probably exchange my 7 and switch to the 8.
