Canon's Digital Rebel XT (EOS 350D, EOS Kiss N) was an entry-level camera that today holds the title of one of the most venerable and reliable of the old Canon DSLRs. These cameras have withstood significant abuse and most of the XT cameras that I've seen have exhibited significant abuse, yet they continue to run well. At 8 megapixels, the images from the Rebel XT are small, but still suitable for use as a learning camera or for casual photography that can be printed to around 11X14.

I use this camera today in 2021 in my boutique photography business...as long as you know how to work this cameral in all the manual modes, then this camera still takes amazing photos. Amazing video on this camera.

I agree. The old sensors had some kinda magic to them. Maybe the huge pixels, or the limited dynamic range, but images from old DSLRs are generally very interesting and colorful.

Thanks for making these videos, David. I definitely agree the Canon 350D is an excellent camera. I bought mine when it was released on the marked, but now it's been collecting dust for some years. Picking it up again, I could use some updating on how to use it. Also, earlier I only used a few of the numerous features. Now I'm having a look at the rest. Hi David, The timing with which I found your videos on this camera is so appreciated. Been dabbling for years and the videos really help to explain the entire camera settings, modes, options, etc. For me this is much better than making total sense of the manual. I'll be referring back to them when I go through this old camera to make sure that I have it set up properly and can more easily make the adjustments that I want.

Thank you! I also find that manuals tend not to explain what things do, only what they are. For me, that's a HUGE weakness. I've been starting to make some select video manuals into books (available on Amazon, so far only three film cameras are published.) But I'm going to venture into digital cameras this year, too. Why manufacturers don't just explain how each setting affects photography is beyond me.

Thank you for the content! It is helpful! I have a question: I want to use my Canon 350D to trigger off-camera flash (Godox TT685II). How do I sync my camera with the off-camera flash, using the pop-up flash on Canon 350D?

Good question. Your off-camera flash will need to have flash-release control, meaning that it can be triggered by the firing of another flash. Set it to that setting and it should work as long as the off-camera flash isn't too far away.

Hi it's 2024 yaay lol I have always wanted to be I to photography my bf bought me this canon rebel xt a few yes ago it sat in a box...I want to use it!! Ty so much for your videos!! How can I put it on a timer with a burst??? Like set it up, hit the button and have it take multiple shots at once??? Do I need a remote attachment???

Hi and I can't recall if that's exactly possible (it's been a long time since I made this video now.) You could use a remote for this and set it in burst mode and then use a time on your watch, perhaps.

Hello David, informative EOS 350D video, thanks. I bought mine in Germany in 2005, still like new as hardly used, (unfortunately), but I plan to change that. As I see in your video, the menu content is totally different between yours and mine. For example, in my menu I can only set and record JPEG, what could be the reason for that? I have never changed/set/updated anything on my camera since I bought it until now, so was there a software update or something? If there was an update, can I still update my EOS 350D today? I could not find an update etc. on the Canon website (Germany). Also, I would like to ask you if you know what is the largest CF card capacity that can be used in the EOS 350D and which format is the best (FAT, FAT32, FatEx, etc.). Thank you and I think there's a seeing in the menus (I forget where as it's been a long time since I made this video) that turns on or off simple menus. I don't even recall the exact terminology for that menu item. But I'm guessing that is enabled, which would remove many of the menu options. For firmware updates, check the video's description. If Canon still hosts them, I'll have put a link in the description. For the CF, I don't recall the largest size it can handle, but given the file size on these, a 16gb will be highly usable.

How good is old cameras compared to modern phone cameras?

To my eye, better, but I'm looking at things like image quality, especially when printed. Phones are outputting jpegs and HEIF files, the latter of which I know very little about. Jpeg files use a lot of compression and with a small sensor, even if it's a boatload of megapixels, the images are likely to have artifacts that won't be the case with a camera sensor of a much smaller size. If you shoot and edit raw with an old camera, you can make those images look a lot better than phone images.

Given this camera's age, it might just not recognize it. You're probably going to have an easier time just moving the CF card to a reader and copying that way.

You can use the USB but file transfers will be faster if you get a card reader for your computer and plug the memory card into the computer.

Most likely that means your camera's firmware needs to be updated.

Thank you! For that your best bet would be to buy a CF card reader that plugs into your computer and transfer by removing the CF card and plugging it into the reader.

It's been a while since I sold this, but IIRC you have to be in one of the standard shooting modes -- P, A, S, M, or A-DEP -- and then there's a live view function setup in the second setup menu (yellow wrench).
