Mine is 12 years old and it's still in perfect condition. No AF issues, never serviced, nothing. My favourite lens for still and video, despite owning several L series and Sigma Art lenses.

This is funny. I have just found an affordable used version of this lens+camera, and here you are telling me how worth it is. I am gonna jump on the purchase)) Thanks

So, I couldn't resist and purchased... *EF 28mm f/1.8* and *Sigma 20mm f/1.8* too. Both are so nice for video (I have brief review on my channel) and the noisy Sigma AF is not a problem with wireless mics (the AF itself works perfectly with Canon's DPAF). So I use EF indoors for stationary scenes\live streams and I go out vlogging with Sigma instead of EF 16-35 f/2.8 now... Can't beat f/1.8! 😁

That’s funny - I just mentioned this in another comment. I’ve been watching your Sigma 20mm f1.8 review over and over. I was worried about that lens until I saw how good it looks in your video. Plus, I was so happy to see that the autofocus works so well. I’m definitely going to buy that lens now that I’ve seen your video.

I shot this lens on a 5D like 14 years ago, and I'm probably going to get another soon for my R8. Thank you for reinforcing that idea!

USM is faster then STM. They are kind of audible too. I have 50 1.8 and 40 2.8. Both are slow and loud. Noticed that mirorless version of STM is silent but not much faster.

I agree the dynamic range and low light performance on the RP leave much to be desired. Thanks for a great video on a lens I wouldn't have considered before! P.S. I purchased the RF16mm upon your recommendation from your previous video and am loving it for vlogging on my RP!

Oh, cool! I really enjoy that lens. That's my go-to lens for vlogging and walk and talk segments on the RP.

I bought it in 2010 (sadly it wasn't as cheap back then). I always liked it even though a lot of people considered it one of the weakest canon lenses.But it's nice to see that it gets some appreciation now. But yeah, probably still not a lens for everyone.

As a user of older Canons for some time now, I love the EF range and the USM motor is still plenty quick enough for stills :)

I really love them too - and what surprises me is how well they still perform after all these years.

@@steve_heise The biggest surprise for me recently has been how well the stock 18-55 kit lens (mk II) - the AF copes with near-to-far-and-back testing really well (no that I wouldn’t rather have the IS STM version!) :) [on a 40D]

Okay, you convinced me, I'll get it one day. Although I was thinking of Sigma 20mm f/1.8... But the AF on old third-parties sucks too often, while native is fast and reliable.

The Sigma 20mm f1.8 was one of the ones I considered, but it's just too loud for video with autofocus. It's a great lens though. I use it a lot on my Nikon D100.

Hi Steven, really enjoy your channel. Please keep up the good work! When you order from sellers in Japan, do you have to pay import tax when the items arrive in US?
@steve_heise
@steve_heise 8 ай бұрын
Thanks! And there’s no import tax. I was worried about that too. I’m not sure what items are subject to that but so far, I’ve bought two cameras and three lenses and there was no import tax.

I've also been searching for a good offer on a 55-250mm stm for my eos2000d. New they're like 300-400 or something and it's alright, but I'm still a broke student..

How’s it handle focus pulls?

The one I got my hands on has a very squeaky focus motor. It's the worst when going back and forth during manual focus (which I use a lot). It doesn't seem like yours is squeaking? Speaking of sellers. I guess the japanese sellers actually do maintenance on the lenses before selling them, contrary to KEH, MPB and other smaller sellers on ebay for instance. That's just my guess. Looking at disassembling videos on youtube it doesn't seem that hard, if you've got the know-how and parts (which would probably be easier in Canon (and more) motherland.

I got this lens, but i have a problem with it. Not sure if it only does it in low light ,but the focus is jumping back, and forth when doing video. Or in some cases it detects the face, but it doesn't focus to it. My other Canon lenses are not doing this which is weird.

OK, the RF lenses noticably the ones with stm motors are less fast in video so they make less sound than older usm ones thats pretty much just that, and it is sad, canon could just get those stm motors in the trash and use nano usm or new tech like electromagnet actuator like on sony that they are rumored to be working on (canon I mean)
