I was seriously thinking about which lens am I have to buy (18-135 USM or STM) The main purpose is 90% video. I decided to buy STM. Very helpful video. Thanks.

STMs are good when used for video, especially with cameras using Dual Pixel AF as they have smooth focus transitions with very little hunting. USM motors are traditionally faster at focusing but with often focus slightly past the subject and then quickly pull back, as a result from a video point of view they aren't ideal but from a stills photography point of view they are much better (hence why all the STMs have been introduced into Canon's budget lenses rather than their L lenses).

L series uses ring usm. On EF-S lenses, thhere is an old micro usm which is garbage, and the new nano usm. Comparing the nano usm and stm 18-135, my personal experience is that the nano usm is lightning fast, much faster compared to the stm which is already really quick.

Great review as always! I think Canon made the STM line of lenses specifically for the dual pixel AF system found in their new line of camera bodies starting with the 70D and now with the new 7D Mark II giving it a very silent continuous AF on video mode.

It would be helpful to see an audio waveform from the soundtrack of this video. You could then give a numerical comparison. It would also be helpful to provide a comparison of sound picked up during video recording using the internal camera mic, a shotgun mic mounted on the camera, and an external mic just out of the shot above or in front of the speaker.

Video camera people can only use lenses with noise emissions that microphones cannot pick up. Others can use push-pull to avoid focus hunting when tracking aircrafts

very simply, USM will focus faster, awesome for stills, but is more audible. STM will focus slower, but if you are doing video it will focus without losing subject and is much smoother for video. it is also near silens So if you are doing videos with those lenses, get STM If you are doing still, Get usm

EF-s 15-85 is more superior, better image quality. USM is faster, usually.

I wasn't too happy with this lens on my Canon EOS 50D. I enjoy stills photography, mostly landscapes, and while the focus was good during the day, there was almost no auto focus capability at night. It would just continuously attempt to focus with no success. Manual focus is difficult to achieve with this lens; I had to use a trick I found on the internet that worked a little. Others may have a better experience but that is my experience with this lens on the EOS 50D. I know better now and the suitability for USM and STM.
