Great explanation of something that is generally far too technical for me. I am the least technical, least handy, least fix-it person you will ever meet so it was nice to hear a pretty easy to understand explanation of this. And of course, its always just nice to watch a Dave Laffan video, no matter the subject. Glad you made it through the heatwave ok and now are back to somewhat normal temperatures!

Cheers mate……I honestly have no expectation of you whatsoever to watch something like this (let alone comment) so I won’t be offended if you miss these ones out. Basically just one for the search based algorithm to pick up in a few months more than anything else. I’m just struggling massively to get out anywhere at the moment 😫

Good idea to do a topic that isn't often covered on KZbin Dave. Do you get options in the Cannons to fine tune how snappy the focussing is? I know you can do that in a lot of Nikons.

Cheers Robert. Yes there's a fine tuning menu on the full frame cameras and on a couple of the higher end aps-c models.

Sorry if I missed this in the video but, for the USM is the racking for focus snappy for both auto and manual focus or just auto?

Hey, sorry for the delay, yes USM focus is faster to move focussing distance in manual focus vs STM - it's to do with the stronger rotational forces needed for USM to move the various elements and then hold them in place

Are DC lenses as good for fast photography as USM lenses? What I mean is, do DC lenses have the same focusing speed as USM lenses?

Omg!!! No, he said DC is the cheapest to make, the nosiest and the SLOWEST. USM is the fastest, the STM and DC comes in way last, 👊🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸

My 18-55 just died/only focusses one way (close to far) which leads to out of focus shots if it overshoots so i consider it completely dead apart from manual focus projects. Sadly the price of camera geat absolutely skyrocketed. for example the 18-135 more then doubled in price since the release here. I would love a USM replacement but those things start at 500 bucks. i love them and own one (canon 100 mm macro) but i just cant justify the price bump that is x2 or more. Seems STM lenses are out of the equation tho. Way to slow for animal shooting.

STM motors can do a decent job for animal shooting but (in my experience) only on prime lenses. The second you throw any zoom into the mix you're right, they are far too slow due to the arrangement of moving lens elements.

@@LetsClickPhotography Thanks for the reply. I have a love hate relationship with prime lenses. They are great for IQ but they are just not as versitile as i would like. I'm aimig to get a second older body for a prime lens on it as a compromise but as a main i prefer to take the IQ loss and get the right framing then to get a wrong crop of what i want or to have to crop and lose IQ that way.
