This is the #1 lens I use! I absolutely love it. It takes exceptional pictures on my Canon 70D.
@rklmbd29348 жыл бұрын
This lens came with my 70D a few years ago and I automatically discounted it as a cheap kit lens, preferring more expensive lenses that I own. Thing is, I kept coming back to it despite myself for its versatility. If I only want to have one lens its often this. And that's what happened when I went on holiday recently including in my travels a friend's wedding in exotic Goa. I intended just to take some snapshots, there was a professional on hand for formal photos. I didn't even take a flash even though it was outdoor and at night. The lens surprised the heck out of me! IS is really really good. Dynamic range brilliant (Indian weddings are colourful!) and to my greatest surprise, because of the happy marriage of IS, wide open aperture and fairy lights I discovered that bokeh and out-of-focus is just creamy creamy creamy delicious. As distortion and CA are controlled in camera I have new respect for this lens and have returned its to its rightful place at the front of the cupboard.

I recently took a tour boat to see Pictured Rocks National Seashore in Michigan. I brought 3 lenses on the trip for my Canon 90D. A 70-300 zoom, a 17-50 zoom, and this Canon 18-135. I only wanted to bring one lens on the boat tour. You guessed it, the 18-135 was perfect. The light was lousy that day but I added a bit on contrast and saturation in processing, so the colorful rocks turned out beautiful.

It’s super sharp on my R6 mark II which crops adapted Canon EF-S lenses. I imagine it will perform the same on the R7 which has a higher pixel density. It’s just ok on my 90D but better than the older MKI EF 24-105mm (L) f/4. I’ve heard the better pairing on the 90D is the Mark II EF 24-70mm f/2.8.

@metube6859 Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris... I just purchased nearly the same lens, marked as 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. At 100€, it seemed like a bargain, particularly since I had in mind the good marks you gave to the STM version. Note that there's neither the STM nor the USM designation on mine, and all of the reviews I find here on KZbin refer to one or the other of these two versions. How likely is it that the optics perform in the same way? For a lens with the same optical references, when a manufacturer makes changes to motorization or other electronics, do they typically retain the same optical characteristics? Thanks for your reviews! They are great, and I have learned a lot.
@metube6859 Жыл бұрын
Just to add to the weirdness, in case anybody is actually interested in this, I connected my 50D and launched the EOS Lens Registration Tool. It showed my new lens as needing to be added (which I had already seen in the camera itself), but it shows it not as an EF-S but as an EF lens. There is no equivalent EF-S lens in the entire list. Physically, the lens is labelled EF-S, and it has the the little blocking pin that prevents it from being mounted on an a full-frame EF mount. (I tried to put it on my 6D, and no-go.). So, given that the EOS Lens Registration Tool sees it only as an EF lens, I really am curious as to whether or not this lens is equivalent to its EF brother except for the labelling and blocking pin. After running the tool, the camera shows that it now has the correction data, but it describes the lens as EF-S. It sounds like some kind of commercial trick. 🙂

Thank you for the videos. I had a 60D with 18-200 mm IS kit lens. It was a lemon and after 3 repairs went back. Now I am looking to replace it with the credit note under extended warranty. My question: which is a better lens? The 18-200 IS or the 18-135 STM IS? I loved the pictures that I got with the 18-200 - it really served all my needs from macro to zoom, in particular was great for close proximity action shots of the niece and nephew and it seemed to focus very fast. Unfortunately they no longer include it as part of the kit, and it is $700 Canadian on its own. I wish I had not brought the camera back and lived with its glitches! Thanks for any advice...

@christopherfrost10 жыл бұрын
perfectforehand Can't go wider / faster than f/5.6 at 135mm. Whenever you look at the name of a lens, look at the aperture number. That is always the maximum aperture
@rob4eva10 жыл бұрын
Chris explained it well but let me explain it again... depending on the mm your at it will have a locked minimum aperture but you can increase the fstop. At 18mm your start at f/3.5 and can go higher but if you increase the mm to say 135mm your minimum changes from f/3.5 to f/5.6 but you can obviously go to f/8 at 135mm but you can't go below f/5.6 The reason people love low aperture lens such as the 50mm f.2.0 is because the it can let more light into the lens making it ideal for night shots but the lens also has better depth of field which allows to blur the background a lot more compares to 50mm lens with the 18-135mm which is ideal for portraits. I recommend everyone should have a 50mm or 30mm low aperture lens within your kit, it best lens I've ever purchased.

favorite lens for me. However, I find that I must test longer zoom range lenses at more FL because decentering can crop up within a fairly narrow range. Actually Chris, I want to take advantage of the built in video capability. Both my slr and camcorder are way out of date. I think you are indicating that the 5ti is superior to the 3ti in terms of video capabilty. please advise, and thank you for getting back to me on this subject. Semi-pro here, New Jersey, USA. Have used the old slr Minolta's SRT-101 series w/ Rokkor lenses since 1972 w/ great success. I always felt that Rokkor "glass" was superior to both Nikon and Canon, but pros in the business now are overwhelmingly using Canon over Nikon, at least in photo-journalism assignments in this NYC metro area. Minolta had gone out of the camera business, selling it's technology to Sony. Their 7D dslr was too little too late in terms of capabilty and it came with a high price tag. Sales were mediocre and Minolta decided to end it's manufacturing of all cameras and camera equipment. Thus in the market for a new camera, and still shooting film at this moment ! Have about $750.00 to invest, so looking for a capable camera, as I only do photography as a side line. Mostly architectural and landscapes for the construction industry, ( photo-documentation ). Thank you again.

GeniusPanda It has a Canon's new AF motor called the "Nano USM drive" in it. I wanted to see how that worked, and also if the optics are really the same as compared to the STM version.

Hi, I dont use the Video option at all. So, Should I buy the Old IS Version as I am getting it for cheap or should i get the STM Version. How big diff is on the Image Quality ?..
@christopherfrost9 жыл бұрын
+Gopal Krishna From what I hear, the new STM version is a bit sharper, and it generally functions a bit better so I'd go for the STM version, unless there's a big difference in price

Hey Chris, great review. I am getting the Canon 700d and am in between the Sigma AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 II DC HSM OS Lens for Canon and the 18-135 that you have reviewed. Your verdict on A: The 700D that comes with the 18-135 or B: Get the 700D body only plus the Sigma 18-200mm lens. Thanks!

I didn't really like the Sigma lens, I'd much prefer the Canon. Check my review of the Sigma lens for more infoz

Thx for another excellent review. Any chance you will do a review of the Sony EP Z 18 - 105mm G zoom lens and how it compares? Just a note for Sony e mount users about STM lenses, they won't function without a Commlite or Metabones type adapter if you cross platform it with a Sony e mount camera.

+Vikingdescendent Don't cover Sony lenses, I'm afraid! My next target is the Fuji X system.

Hello, I'm looking for a lens that will serve the purpose of product photography (garments, clothes etc) and a bit of travel too. Planning to buy Canon 800D along with 18-135 STM lens. Is this the right option?
@christopherfrost6 жыл бұрын
It'll be a good start. You could get an inexpensive Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens too for the product photography if you wanted
@raunaqmurarka34226 жыл бұрын
Christopher Frost Photography thanks for the reply sir. Also, what are your view on using filters? Recently bought the OSAKA CPL filter and not happy with it. Just wondering if we really need filters for landscape and portrait photography.

so in your opinion, what is better for everyday walk around city street photography. the 15-85 usm OR 18-135 stm
@christopherfrost7 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I would go for the 15-85, as I quite like my wide angles

Bought it used as a Allrounder, didnt get a good oppertunity to test it fully from the picture Quality but from the feel of it, it feels solid. Not Cheap or high premium, just solid with good weight.

hi, i have 60D , need help.i am shooting video, i dont know what to do, i have canon 18-135, but i want to get sigma 17-50, do you prefer this? does 17-50 have other advantage except max aperture than 18 -135? for example for day shooting video. will i get with 17-50 more sharp or quality video in day time video than 18-135?
@christopherfrost10 жыл бұрын
The 17-50 has a wider aperture, so it will help you when shooting indoors or in dark situations, and it will help you get a more out of focus background
@JimboHamster10 жыл бұрын
Christopher Frost Photography you say it is very different 17 mm of 17-50 than 18 mm of 18-135 ? for 1 mm it is very different?

@gilean617910 жыл бұрын
Vugar Ashrafov Im also contemplating getting the Sigma 17-50 2.8; I have the canon 18-135mm STM as kit lens of my 70D. My apprehensions of getting the Sigma is there are many reviews saying they got a bad copy. Did you push through with the Sigma purchase?
@JimboHamster10 жыл бұрын
kRx md , i yet didnt purchased, but i think if you are going to buy the sigma for its quality i think your 18-135 STM good enough , and there is no big difference between these two, your 18-135 STM is new versia, but i have 18-135 without STM.

@christopherfrost9 жыл бұрын
+Ahmed elmarhomy No need to shout hehe. That lens will work with your camera. All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C Digital SLR camera (except EF-M lenses). You should make sure you get the 'STM' version of the lens. When it comes to the zoom range of the lens, watch this video, and you will see.

Hello Chris, I currently own a 550D and 70D, having just sold on my older 450D with 18-55mm kit lens v1 I am looking for something to replace he older kit lens with something better. Either the Canon 18-135mm STM or the slightly older 15-85mm USM ( now £ 150 ). Should I go for the Canon 15-85mm or do the bad distortions from his lens favour the Canon 18-135mm instead.

Hello Chris. I have some doubts about two lens I have ponder in my mind several times. One is the Canon EF-S 18-135 VS Canon EF 24-105. I know that some times expensive lens doesn't mean best quality. From your review of the Canon EF 24-105mm I gather it's not really good quality lens image just because it's an L lens. Thanks for your help!

look into the 70D. it comes with this lens. apart from that, the 70D has awesome autofocus for video. you just shoot and basically the cámara does the work.
@christopherfrost9 жыл бұрын
***** The 70D is much easier to use for video, and has many more options for video work. However, the 6D has much better picture quality at high ISO levels. Both cameras have horrendous problems with moire, which is not a problem for the 5D Mark iii, but which itself is still not as easy to get to grips with as the 70D. So best quality: 5D Mark iii. Good quality: 6D. Easiest to use: 70D

Hi, I have this lens with my T5i Canon (Crop), and i find it very sharp indoor studio. But i also have the Mark III 5D. If i want the best sharpness possible and use my 5d Mark III, what option do i have? EF 28-135 ? EF 24-105 ? better zoom option? Would i get a better picture quality than with my t5i and this lens combination? thanks
@christopherfrost10 жыл бұрын
You'll find you get better picture quality with the 5D and a 24-105, especially if you get the Sigma version, but it won't be a vast difference in sharpness, and the zoom range will be lower. I haven't reviewed the 28-135
@theoakleystore10 жыл бұрын
Christopher Frost Photography Thanks for your answer, i think i will order both the 24-105 and the 28-135 EF and compare them, cause my t5i rocks, i need the camera for studio low light and don't know why i get more clear pictures with the t5i vs mark III at same AEIso, thanks!
