The 24mm stm is my current favorite lens, but due to adapter in eos M, the 22mm is a killer and one of the best lenses I ever seen, not everything is about sharpness, that is why almost everyone else have to deal a shitty sigma art lens instead of a large format camera. Said this, the 22mm is truly the pancake, not a kit lens size due to adapter, loosing just a bit the point of a lens like this. The 22mm is a wide angle f2, for a smaller camera, there is no way you could get anything like this: the smallest, lightest autofocus, wide angle, nicely close focus and fast lens native for your camera, all at once. Sure, you can get faster and wider, but they won't be nearly as cheap, small and light which sometimes really matters above optics. You can't go wrong with the 24mm stm, but there is no point when the 22mm f2 is there.

Ditto! I have the 22mm, and I am constantly amazed how small and compact it is. It's fast, super light, even with the whole camera it fits in a pocket! Also, the image quality is pretty good, and has a nice color balance for video / vlogging, with a great view angle. The 24mm's angle is a bit too tight for me, the 22mm has the right angle, gives that little bit more that makes the shooting experience so much easier (for me)... although that might depend on one's shooting style, what angle one prefers. Yet, I'm coming from 50mm shooting (that used to be my exclusive lens I shot with for many years), and I much prefer the 22mm..

What I've learned from doing the same types of tests with my viltrox adapter is that newer lenses are just better. Sometimes newer low-end lenses are still better than old higher-end lenses. I wasn't expecting that as I figured glass science hasn't changed but apparently I was wrong. I'm looking to spring for a Sigma 56mm f1.4 to replace my adapted 50mm f1.8 STM now. I may not end up with any adapted lenses in the end.
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, definitely. I have video tests and compairson photos for a 56mm vs 50mm video, bit it will probably be quite a while before I can record more and edit it.
@GrantMcWilliams
@GrantMcWilliams 4 жыл бұрын
@@ScottJWaldron I think adapted lenses are a great idea if you already have the glass and in some cases OK to save some money. For instance the Yungnao 50mm f1.8 on a viltrox adapter is about $100. It's hard to beat that combination but if you start talking about a new Canon 50mm f1.8 STM with a Canon adapter then it's probably not that far off of getting the Sigma 56mm f1.4 which is going to be about 10mm shorter, 2 mm smaller around and about the same weight all the while being brighter and clearer. Going to the Canon equivalent lens (50mm f1.4) makes even less sense. It's much larger, much heavier and not clearer and costs double with the adapter. I was looking at the 85mm but you said you didn't like it adapted. I was also looking at the 24mm and 40mm pancake lenses but I already have an ef-m 22mm and I probably don't actually need the 40mm. I am in line to buy a couple of Canon's rumored new EF-M lenses if they every materialize though - 15mm f2 and 52mm f2. Maybe the 18-45mm f2.8-4. We'll see if they even make it to production.

The 24mm lens is really good, and even more so when you consider the price. Comparing a native reflex system with the 24 and a mirrorless native system with the 22 I would stay for quality with the 24. I love this goal. Very good video, it looks great how both goals work. Best regards.

If you like everything about the 24mm then I don't see a point. If you want a smaller lens then the 22mm is it.

I'm considering just using my cell phone's wide angle lens for things like vlogging. I feel like when the subject is arm's length I don't need the extra performance of a dedicated camera to see myself.
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, these two lenses are definitely not ones I'd use for vlogging. On EF-M I'd say the 11-22mm, 15-45mm, and maybe the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 though even that one is a bit narrow.

I was going to say that the auto focus looked horrible on what I thought was a great camera with great lenses. When I saw in the description that you recorded it in 4k everything made sense. I would love to see you record in 1080p next time as its uses the better and more reliable dual pixel cmos autofocus.
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 4 жыл бұрын
I don't remember exactly what is in this video, but most of the video tests are in 1080p unless I said in a test that I used the M50 in 4K mode (likely to see if either lens is better with the contrast based 4K AF). What I probably said is that I rendered the video in 4k so that image samples are in high resolution. I do that as a benefit to people with 4k screens so they can get a better idea of image quality through a youtube video. I definitely use the M50 in 1080p most of the time. Very rarely do I do tests or record footage with the M50 in 4K mode.

Great video! This is the exact type of video I was looking for, as I recently picked up the m50 and looking to improve my video quality. As such, I vary between a "sitting talking head" style and a "standing closing in and out from the camera" so seeing the different focuses and side by side comparison is great. I feel like my need would probably be more towards the m22 yeah? The only real concern I saw was in the autofocus, where it seemed the 24mm was a bit quicker. Or is that just my imagination? Would love to hear back from you!
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 4 жыл бұрын
These were bad tests for autofocus because the hat I had on was confusing the M50. The 22mm should be more consistent with video AF than the 24mm.

I have a cruel doubt! I recently sell my T5 and bought an M200 and I already own a efs 24mm 2.8 and a 50mm 1.8 yongnuo. I'm in doubt if I buy a Viltrox adapter to use these lenses (and I suffer with a larger set) or if I sell both lenses and buy an efm 22mm 2.0. What do you think? Thank you very much! 😊🙏🏻

Hello my friend, could you help me? I just bought the Ef-m 22mm and found the focus ring more harder/stuck to rotate than the 15-45 lens ring. Is it like that, or is it as smooth as the ef-s 24mm? I would like to know if I need to ask for an exchange/return. Thank you again!

It has a manual focus ring. Toggle AF/MF in the camera. The left button on the d-pad is usually that. I'd suggest using that in combination with the magnification feature in the camera. www.dpreview.com/forums/post/61925817

No contest at all. The 22mm is clearly the better and more versatile prime lens. If you look behind you, I believe the 24mm is almost focused. Nope. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't kick the 24 out of bed for eating crackers, but if you can only buy one, the 22 is the way to go. But, honestly, I'd buy a prime 35mm, a nifty-50, and 24-70mm before I'd buy either of these two lovlies.
@ScottJWaldron

My biggest mistake here was having that hat on. The M50 couldn't do face detection well so the results are not amazing. That said, I do think the 22mm is better.

I have no way of helping you with that. I have seen another comment in my videos about someone that needed to have their kit lens replaced. Maybe that's something to look into. If you think the camera is broken you need to contact Canon in your country. The two M50 that I have work well enough for photo and video.
