This is probably one of the best EF-S Lenses ever produced, it’s plenty sharp, it’s autofocus and IS are silent (i thought it was broken when I first tried it because it was so quiet) and it’s so lightweight and compact, and it’s inexpensive, unbeatable deal if you get one second hand 👍

@@yogi6muhammad this focal length (35mm eqv. of 16-29 mm) is made for landscape shots and creative wide angle shots. And though build quality is not L like, it's decent enough. But the optics is where these STM lenses shines. You only have to buy primes and L lenses for bright apertures (shallow depth of field) or durability and environmental seals. Imho a kit with 10-18 is stm, 18-55 is stm, 55-250 is stm with the addition of the 50mm stm for portraits and a decent speedlite is all you need, even as avid amateur. Nice review. I typically don't advise the 10-22mm lens anymore due to the 10-18mm being of such good quality for less than half what the 10-22mm cost. All the "advantages" of the 10-22mm are not what I would call practical for lenses in this class. It has wider max aperture, but since on wide lenses you would almost always be stopping down to increase DOF and sharpness that is moot for most still shooting (If mine was max F8 it would still be useful to me in almost all scenarios). The 10-22mm can zoom to 22mm, but you didn't get a ultra wide to zoom in, you got it to shoot wide, and both these lenses go to 10mm, but one does it for less than half the price. The 10-18mm has IS, and this is a huge advantage, especially when you consider the cost of both lenses and how that almost eliminates the need for a tripod (I've shot as slow as half a second handheld a got sharp images, probably could go slower). For video work, the extra reach and higher stops of the 10-22mm might look appealing, but the USM motor is just clunky and noisey, and with no IS I just would not advise it over the 10-18mm, which has IS and is silent and smooth. Even for resale value, you are going to lose less value with the 10-18mm since it is so much cheaper. It will resell for about 150, while the 10-22mm resells for about 300-350. So you lose 150 dollars versus 300-3350 dollars. Image quality, I think is mixed. In all the examples I have seen the 10-22mm is sharper when shot at wider apertures when zoomed out. As I said already though you mostly don't shoot this way with these lenses. Compared to typical aperture settings, I don't see a practical difference, and if you shoot raw and use post processing the lack of contrast and color (which is minimal by comparison) doesn't even matter anyway. I just can't see a practical reason to get the 10-22mm over the 10-18mm anymore. This is not to say the 10-22mm is not good, I am basically saying that they compare well to each other. I am simply saying that the 10-18mm, for its price, brought practical reasons to own a wide angle lens to the consumer market. Another way to put it is that you can get the performance of a lens that cost more than twice what it does, and with IS. But if you have the 10-22mm it's not like you have a bad lens, what I am saying is anyone that doesn't have a wide lens and can't choose between these two should probably just get the cheaper lens in this case, as I don't see any real advantage to the 10-22mm for the majority of the reasons you would get either. This makes it so the average user can shoot wide angles without breaking their budget. More advanced users can appreciate that price as well, and also the advantage of IS.

... You never fail to deliver an excellent lens review! I just rented this and do like it. But I ,not too long ago ,rented the 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM and really LOVE it... Though the 70D's video mode in program mode provides decent compensation for the abysmal f/5.6 at 18mm on the 10-18mm, the additional stops, range, and build quality of the 10-22mm keep it in demand... And high in resale value... But 300usd cannot be denied... That STM function is smooth and silent and FAST

here is my tip for those looking for lenses if specialize in wide angles and landscapes, you're going to want something that can stay quite sharp with those wide angles. if you are looking for something slightly more manageable for taking photos from a single stand point or getting much wider apertures, you will want a slightly longer lens. the concept is simple. sometimes you will need two different lenses for two different types of photos. it's a concept accepted that you will get the best quality out of a lens due to its higher performance in that specific genre of photography. which is why it is very difficult to create an all time lens that can go from 10mm to 124mm and still have the qualities of taking wide landscapes and zooming in close. although this technology is possible. however it is also expensive and even a higher prices, you still aren't getting the best quality out of your lens.

Superb, Chris! Thanks a lot for this one and also for the many other excellent reviews. I just ordered one of those 10-18 STM beasts to complement my equipment on the wide-angle end. One question though: in your comment @6:57 you talk about distortion at 18mm focal length, but the label in the video is »11mm f/5.6«. I think it's indeed the 18mm what we see since I cannot imagine the barrel distortion to change so much with a change of just 1mm. Please double-check that when you have the time. The same 11mm label is overlaid on the camera-clock shots starting @7:17, but you don't talk at all about the focal length. Please check this one, too. I am looking forward to more reviews, for the most part for the information but as well because I like your (albeit slight) accent a lot. Kind regards to Cymru!

As a new SLR owner I appreciate your videos. I think you miss the point of the zoom range. Look at the lens that most often comes with the camera: 18-55mm. It's no accident that Canon offers lenses to nearly tie into this lens. I have both the 10-18mm and 55-250mm lenses. The three zooms match perfectly, leaving me without gaps in my coverage. So far, I have not been hindered by the limited aperture. Perhaps this is because the camera is capable of speeds far beyond the limits of physical film. We're not limited to ISO's of 400 (B&W) or 250 (color). A professional photographer may kvetch, but a novice like me has a long way to go before I run into the limits of this system.

Like every super-wide zoom I've tried (not many, but enough to form an opinion) -- this lens has *strong* field curvature, particularly at shorter focal lengths (a hemispherical focal 'plane'). This, however, is not a show-stopper. When worried about corner sharpness, I focus long and shove the entire outer range of the curved field past infinity focus (and hold the rest of my focus through its naturally thick depth-of-field). When I do that and process the raw image with Canon's DPP4 editor, the corners are *razor* sharp with no apparent lens artifacts.

ive been using the lens for a few days now. I still need to experiment with photo's but video has been decent. Only draw back for shooting in video is in very low light with AF on, its always seeks focus. The lens is lightweight and its great for one handed video operations. The AF sounds are very minimal, another good reason the lens is great for video.

Chris, I think in this review you mention how much you are using your 70D for video work and based on this lens and some of your other reviews I'd be curious to know what particular set of lenses you'd recommend for that kind of work with the 70D. Right now I'm pretty settled on the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS, the EF 35mm 2.0 IS and the EF-S 55-250 IS STM 4-5.6. All stabilized, two of them wide aperture. I had been toying with replacing my 100mm 2.8 Macro with the IS L version of it, but mostly for video closeups in macro and as you pointed out in your review of that lens the IS doesn't work well for macros. You also mentioned that such a lens was more important for full frame cameras, since they can't focus (in general) as close. I'm not a huge macro person (didn't hardly use my lens even for stills) but I would like to be able to cover the bases on any video shoot (and most likely I will be tripodless, as many of the places I need to shoot video don't allow tripods). Any other suggestions or thoughts on the lenses I have selected? I might toss this particular lens (the 10-18mm) in as well, although the variable aperture bothers me a lot (I'd much rather have just an extremely wide fixed one -- not fisheye, but perhaps something in the 10-11 range with a 2.8. But it would need IS for sure).
@christopherfrost10 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you've got a great kit bag already! Don't bother with the macro lens, as your 70D has a cool digital zoom feature that lens you do macro work. Check out my video on it. You might like to get the new Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8, when it finally comes out, that will be good for ultra-wide angle work
@MikeDKelley10 жыл бұрын
Christopher Frost Photography Thanks for the words -- I thought I had seen just about every video you've made (well, all on Canon stuff at least ) but I didn't see any video on 70D. Perhaps you could point me in the right direction of your (vast) site . (I did see your 60D video -- well, I didn't watch all of it, because that's not the camera I'm buying). The Tokina sounds like it might be a good choice -- I'm sure you'll review it so I'll wait and see how it stacks up. It might sound weird, but I always feel funny buying any non-Canon lens, even though I know optics from other companies can be as good or better. Just a brand name bias, I guess.

Bought this 10-18 mm lens a couple of years ago, but never managed to get really sharp images. But I have “discovered” last year how to make sharper images with my other 18-55 mm lens: it’s manual focus. Really, everyone should practice to focus manually and your images will become sharper than with the automatic focus option. So, with this experience I also made images now with my 10-18 mm lens, with the manual focus option, and the results are good and much better. So, since I know how to make quite good images with this 10-18 mm lens I have decided to keep it.

Also, how large is the paper that you use for the distortion and vignetting test? I would like to print one out and see how my lenses compare. Is there a .pdf or similar I can find on the net? Cheers,

It's very large indeed. It's an image I made myself - sorry, it's unavailable for others to use!

I just purchased this lens on Amazon for a low £189 with a nice discount. Looking forward to using it and seeing what photographs I can take with the lens!

Hei sir , can you also use this lens for landscape photography ?
@samuelwade4 жыл бұрын
@@yusufal-kathiri3693 Hi, yeah the 10-18 mm lens is a wide angle lens which is perfect for landscape photography
@20centurymodern10 жыл бұрын
It will be interesting to see a head to head comparison with the Canon 10-22mm lens. The main visual differences I can see are the different focusing system, narrow f stop and plastic mount. Wonder what the optical difference is like, as the Canon 10-22mm is twice as much as the 10-18mm lens.

First! I use a 40D and love doing landscape, motion blurred water,sunsets and so on.......I am really torn between the 10-18 and the 10-22, obviously the big price difference is one thing, but not the biggest for me. First and foremost is picture quality/sharpness, I do almost all my landscaping with a tripod, so Image Stabilization is not too important for me, does the 10-22 justify the bigger price? is there any real difference in picture quality between the two? and another things that bothers me is the plastic mount, or is that nothing really to worry about. Cheers Mike
@christopherfrost10 жыл бұрын
I personally don't worry about plastic mounts. I haven't put the 10-22 through its paces on my standardized testing yet, so I can't say for sure, but I think the 10-18 is a tiny bit sharper, while the 10-22 is a little more fun, for its better zoom range and faster aperture
@ObanHighlander10 жыл бұрын
The bigger range is nice and the faster aperture which seems more of a plus to me will probably swing it more to the 10-22 for me, both lenses get good reviews with the image quality appearing to be very similar, so take the lenses for their specs and not the money, it comes down to image stabilization vs bigger range, faster aperture and better build quality. With Canon's winter deal on just now, I will get €55 back on the 10-22 which makes it even more attractive (will pay for the lens hood) I think if the 10-18 had a metal mount and a lens hood included I would not be able to ignore the price difference. Thanks for the reply anyhow Chris and have a good 2015 taking pics ;-)

I want a wide angle for a long time, I thought about the tokina 11-16 but it's a little bit expensive for me, but this is not so expesive an even has IS. It's might be my new lens :D
@SAGGING_GUT10 жыл бұрын
Get a Tokina 12-24 F4. Better in every way (except for no IS.) But, I imagine you'll be using it on a Tripod anyway...

I'm shooting shot films with my camra, they most of the time just handheld so is could be very usefull xD but i will look at the tokina. :D

ThrashedKidder I use the tokina also and I do miss the IS. It is also rather heavy. I would like to compare these head to head, and since my brother is thinking about buying one of these, we'll be able in a few weeks :-)

***** Mine was broken too. But it was fixed under warranty. The build quality is way better than my canon lenses. It only was broken because of a small fabrication fault. The lens on itself feels firm and solid :-)

Its a great wide angle lens for crop sensor. Considering the wide angle for the full frame is 5 X more expensive, Its great for landscape and architecture etc.

As usual, nice review Chris. I am close to pulling the trigger on buying a Canon 70D mainly for video. I have a lot of Canon lenses already, but as you say, for video this looks very nice. I am trying to see if anyone sells the 70D body with this lens as a kit, not found one so far. If only this came with F/2.8 throughout like my 17-55 IS USM which I love, even though USM not STM, but I just use an external mic. I see you too do a lot of video, I don't know about you, but I wish the 70D had 60 fps 1080p, Panning is like silk at 60 fps, lower rates are terrible and stutter, and it needs an Audio jack. Then I could sell my pro video gear! I am looking into external hot-shoe-mic with line amp to audio monitor jack ... there has to be such a thing ... you'd think! My wireless mic system has this. Cheers.

That will be my next buy after the flash with HSS. Shooting with 50mm(85 equiv) is like going with a telescope in your hands i cant get used :( I need something for tight spaces and good handheld outdoor video, looks like that is my lens :)

Hi Chris, thanks for your comprehensive review. What do you think of the Samyang 10mm F2.8?

I'm testing it right now. It's nice and sharp but it has more distortion than I wanted to see (and it can't take screw-in filters)

I bought this lens to replace a Sigma 10-20mm, essentially for the image stabiliser which works very well. However I use this as a 12-18mm wide, taking stills at 10-11mm is a waste of time due to some shocking focus fall off at the edges, even when stopped down to f10.

Great video Christopher. I just have one question to ask. I will be traveling to the Andes at the end of the year and I want a good ultra-wide lens for the panoramic shots. I have, in mind, to buy the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 DC HSM. But the Canon lens above looks good as well. What do you think I should buy? Value and quality wise. Thanks
@christopherfrost10 жыл бұрын
This Canon lens is better :-)

Briefly, what are the differences between the two lenses?

Hey again Chris, I am more than happy to spend a bit more money for a lens. Should I buy the SIGMA 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM LENS or stick to the Canon lens. What do you think/ Looking to buy something soon. Thanks again.
@christopherfrost10 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Pautasso Hmm, if it's just for still photography then, for travelling, I'd rather have the Sigma 8-16 - those 8mm shots are amazing (although the Canon lens is a lot lighter, which is helpful)

nice review chris. can you please help me decide between this 10-18 or the canon 10-22 , i use a canon 70d with a tamron 24-70 as my daily lens , im relatively new to photography and i dont shoot videos im looking for a wide angle lens but cant decide between this 10-18 or the 10-22 which has a good reputation of a lens. would really be nice to get your advised or from other viewers. thank you

If you don't shoot video you might prefer the 10-22mm, it's a nicer lens. Everyone is asking me for comparison videos at the moment. When I'm back from South Korea in 6 weeks time, I'll do a big, ultra-wide angle lens comparison video for everyone :-)
@nesmusic4u9 жыл бұрын
Christopher, which one do you prefer personally: Canon EF-S 10-22mm 1:3,5-4,5 USM or Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM? I need it for a world traveling tour and want to make a daily blog. Whats your recommendation? regarding to your other video the USM creates loud zooming noises.

I've watched all of your reviews and I'm having trouble deciding. As a travel stills lens, would you choose the canon 10-18 is stm, the tamron 10-24 di vc, or the tokina 11-16? **I'm leaning towards the tamron. Colors look great, but the price and stm of the canon have me second guessing.
@christopherfrost7 жыл бұрын
I'd get the Tamron for the extra zoom range. That's what you want in a travel lens.
