Hi TM, I also own a Sony A6000 and love it. Forgive the length of this post, but you seem like a nice guy and it should be a decent read that may benefit you in the future. I'm following a parallel course to yours; I'm trying to find a handful of lenses I can afford that will cover most or all of my needs. I ordered my camera with the 2 kit lenses (16-50 & 55-210). Right after that, I bought a Sony SEL50F18 (not the newer FE model) and love it. It's the sharpest lens in my bag now, but the 75mm equivalent focal length is too long for many situations. A short while later, I heard about the Sigma 30mm f1.4 with the Sony E-mount and picked one up. Also a very sharp lens, equal to the Sony 50mm, though autofocus is ever so slightly slower and the lack of OSS occasionally comes into play. Also, even the 30mm is still a bit long for general shots. Low-light performance is stellar on both of the primes though, which helps since a lot of my photography centers around bands in clubs. The last lens I just bought is the Sony 18-105 G. I've read good and bad things about it, but thought I'd give it a try myself. I watched your comparison between the 18-105 and the kit 16-50, and I thought you did a good job. The only thing I didn't remember seeing from that video was much of a comparison in lower light, and I think the constant f4 of the G lens shines there. At f4, it's still not really a "low-light" lens, but at least it's f4 at both ends, while the 16-50 pops up to f5.6 pretty quickly. I just took 640 shots of a friend's band in club and stage lighting this past Friday using the 18-105 without flash, and it performed well above my expectations...far better than the kit lens could've done. Ideally, I'd prefer the same zoom range with a constant f2-ish aperture, but that either doesn't exist in an A6000-compatible format yet, or if it does, I don't have the Hope Diamond to pawn to afford it. Anyway, and finally, I was briefly interested in the awesome Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens paired with an MC-11. I spoke with a rep at Sigma about it, and during the email exchange he strongly recommended using only Sigma lenses with the MC-11. Apparently, there's more to the pairing than just mount type. Of course, there's a protocol conversion, but there are still some Sigma-specific differences. Though they don't state this, I don't think the MC-11 was entirely designed for Canon users to adapt to the Sony world. I think it's Sigma appealing to the Sony world without having to offer all their lenses in yet another mount variation. I'm guessing they sell most of their fine lenses with Canon mounts, and that's why the MC-11 is only available as an EF->E mount converter. It's the simplest way to serve their largest current base of customers, while still offering something for a growing number of Sony owners. While they currently offer 3 lenses with the Sony E-mount, part of my conversation with the rep confirmed that they don't have specific plans for more. Instead, they intend to keep improving the MC-11, then future customers can buy Canon- or Sigma-mount Sigma lenses to snap on it. Just thought this may interest you since you're experimenting with the A6000/MC-11 combo. Keep up the great work informing us of your Sony play, enjoy the beautiful places you seem to be visiting, and I hope your beautiful wife continues to pose for your excellent videos! Thanks!

Keep up the good work. I know it takes time and effort. I upgraded from a7 to a7II and a6000 to a6300 after I saw how well my Sigma MC-11 adapter works with adapted Canon mount lenses due to the ability to use phase detection AF with those bodies. I can post some videos, but will tell you now that lenses like the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L (great alternative to Sony G Master since you can find used copies easily for much less, especially 1st gen) focus at "like native" speeds. I use it in AF-C all the time since it's fast enough to keep up with babies learning to crawl and walk. With continuous shooting too! Another tip is that once you have a crop body that can utilise phase detection AF with adapted lenses, you can use focal reducers/speed boosters (ex. Viltrox) with full frame lenses (to retain similar focal lengths on crop sensors) and have similar AF performance with an additional benefit that an f/2.8 lens now exposes at f/2.0 on a crop body too. I am just starting to test that out now, but unfortunately, it also seems like there is some slight vignetting at all focal lengths (noticeable in areas with solid light coloured backgrounds) that wasn't present in the MC-11. Perhaps an unavoidable consequence of how a focal reducer works?

so long story short, the 10-18 mm doesnt work good enough on sony!

Thanks TM! I followed your tutorial and modified my Canon 10-18mm as well. I shoot With the Sony a6400 and AF Works perfectly fine for stills. In video there is really no need for AF on this lens (actually not for stills either). I usually shoot in daylight and with the lens stopped down to F9 or so, everything is in focus anyway. I've done some walk-and-talk vlogging with this setup and it works super smooth. So happy I didn't get the sony one. Saved several hundred dollars, with which I will by buying the Sony 85mm 1,8 instead.

I've just finished doing the conversion after watching your post a good few times, so many thanks for giving me the inspiration. I mainly do video, so the lack of continuous autofocus, or any autofocus in Video mode is annoying, but for the price of the canon lens, I think I can live with it. One thing I did differently to your conversion, was to reuse the section that was cut out. I gently filed down the diameter, a bit at a time, until it fit on the underside of the mount, and I just glued it back in. The lens tube (that sticks into the lens body) also had to be filed down by about 1mm too, but the result looks just like a regular lens, with none of the internals visible.

When I switched from Canon (with Canon 10-22mm) to Sony, I just bit the bullet and got the Sony 10-18mm. Because I do enjoy shooting ultra-wide. Even though it's crazy expensive, it doesn't disappoint. It's compact, light, and sharp enough. Nice little project you did, and informative video though!

Omg that was a while ago. You look so puppy. But I wanted to report that the combination of the MC11 and the Canon 10-18 and the a6700 is now compatible for AF. It’s not perfect in the sense that you have to flip the auto focus switch occasionally to wake it up but it’s really good. You don’t get the same sophistication of course but it’s good. I modified the lens after watching this video. It was very easy. Thank You. I also looked up on eBay for a EF-S to EF adapter and there’s a replacement part that looks like it would finish off the project very nicely. But it’s not necessary if you’re like me and dedicate the MC11 to the lens and rarely take it off.

Might be worth it to redo this test (and all MC-11 tests) with the a6100/a6400/a6600. They work a lot better with adapters, especially concerning autofocus. I've only tested with the Sony LA-EA1 and LA-EA3 but I've read the same about non-Sony adapters too.

i have an e mount camera and was looking at autofocus adapters, the best bodies for autofocus (from jason lanier's experience and shown in his videos) with adapters are the α6300, α6500, α7 II, and α7r II. the reason for this is because of the newer PDAF system on the α7 II and newer. the α7s and α7s II does not have PDAF . the other α7 models, NEX cameras, and ɑ6000 are using an older autofocusing system that doesn't work with PDAF for adapting canon lenses.

My Sony a6000 works very well with all of my Canon STM lenses when coupled with the $100 Fitodiox adapter. No sawing necessary. Works especially well with the 10-18 but vignettes at 10 mm. Most likely a function of the adapter adding some extra length.

I use a Fotga brand adapter with the Canon 10-118 and the A6000. Same result: everything works (IS, MF, A) but not auto focus. Cheap though ($35) and no sawing needed. The lens is easy enough to manually focus. But it would be better if I could just leave it at hyperfocal... I believe the magic of the MC-11 (which is making an EF mount lens autofocus well on an A6000) only applies to certain Sigma lenses. Then again, they definitely didn't test the 10-18 lens (because it doesn't fit anyway). Thanks for this report - I was wondering if this would be a working adaptor. But it seems adaptors have at least to be tuned to the lens in question.

Well, I have an SLT body, so I haven't been interested in an SLT adapter. Video AF is sort of a lost cause with A-mount except for point-n-shoot type videos. The aperture mechanism is not designed for video, and Sony limits the aperture to wide-open or f/3.5 which ever is smaller with SLT AF. FWIW: I bought an LA-EA1 for $76 on eBay. It happened to have the latest firmware.

The MC-11 works best for A6300 and A6500 System ... Sony has improved the firmware/autofocus for using adapters. That's one of the main reasons buying an A6300 instead of A6000 nowadays (case and 4K being the other reasons ... ) In general NO adapter solution supports auto-focus in video which Sony calls continous auto-focus - even Sony does not support it on A-mount lenses. As I want auto-focus in video I personally ended up and bought the Sony SEL 1018. Actually I also have the canon 10-18 for my canon apsc system and I can tell you that the Sony nearly 3x more in price but also delivers better IQ and comes in a nice package. The borders in the image have more details which can be easiliy seen. It also has constant f4 and a metal finish.... If it is worth the price don't know - bought the sony for 618 € and the Canon including lens-hood for just €220. Also keep in mind, when shooting video the A6300 knows the lens and corrects the image accordingly. This is not the case for adapted lenses where the firmware has no correction profile. Adapting lense it's just a compromise ... Ok, I bought the MC-11 for my existing primes and the canon tele 70-300 which makes sense for me as these lenses will only be used in rare situations (and lightroom can do the correction). For bread and butter daily shooting and especially for video stick to native e-mount lenses or buy a different system ...
@ArthurR7 жыл бұрын
Good insight, thank you! I thought the LA-EA4 supports continuous autofocus in video for A mount lenses. Is that incorrect?

Chuck Moser Good info. What adapter are you using? I will have to invest in the Sony 10-18 sometime soon.
@chuckmoser96627 жыл бұрын
TechnologyMafia I'm using the mc-11 because the Metabones is over $400.00 and I don't have a collection of Canon EF Lenses. I bought the 24-105 used from Roberts Used Photo Pro. I do have a Sigma 17-70 for my A6000 and it works OK. It is nothing close to a native lens however. I'm satisfied adapting my 40 year old FD lenses to E mount. As long as I get infinity focus I'm happy. However, I really like autofocus and so far, I haven't fond much to be excited about. Most of the reviews I see are about how well these adapters work on the A6300, a6500 and the mark ii A7 cameras. I'm not ready to drop the kind cash neccessary to buy into that line any time soon.
@ArthurR7 жыл бұрын
Yea, valid points. The sigma 17-70 looks interesting, but like you said, not much to be excited about. These cameras have such great autofocus systems that it is almost a shame at times to put a manual focus lens on them. Unfortunately, most e-mount lenses that work well are pricey.

It would work, but with any adapter autofocus is not amazing for photos. It isnt usable for video in most cases.

@TechnologyMafia Hi.Could you please give me some advice. I own A6000 with kit lens, Sigma 16mm f1,4 and Canon 70-200 f2,8 IS. Should i sell C70-200 and buy Sony 70-200 f4 or invest in Sigma MC11 and try to adopt Canon lens? I know AF will work better no Sony lens but is the difference worth loosing f2,8 ?

Hey! Nice video! I noticed that your frame rate looks like 50 or 60fps for most of your videos, why do you shoot such high frame rates? Thanks!
@ArthurR7 жыл бұрын
Because one day, 60fps will be standard! Jk, no, I just like the ultra-realistic look of 60fps. It also gives me flexibility to slowmo shots if i want to achieve that cinematic 24p look.

Maybe after this video Sigma will make software update even for Canon ef-s lenses, so af will work as it should. This hakcing trick is old as 300d, when people try to use kit ef-s 18-55 on 10d's etc. It's really just Canon bs with rear plastic and rubber. You can even get some original parts from some other lense, and assamble that with metal mount back on it, make it even better lense on the end. Anyways, nice video, i also was thinking, why the hell you can't use efs lenses on mc-11, it's all clear now. Sigma really should just make little bit roomy adapter inside (like the competition did), but i guess it's some legal stuff involved or something.

Thanks for the video, can you recommend me some telephotos lenses (tamron, sigma, canon) for my sony cameras with the mc-11 adaptor.
@isaacsnowhite1044 жыл бұрын
I use a the sigma 150-600 mm C for wild life on an A6000. You can find these lenses for ~$6-700 and with the crop factor adds even more reach (~900 mm). Not the fastest but great for mammals, resting birds, surf photography, etc.

Doesn't the a6000 supports phase detection autofocus too with firmware version 3.10? I'm wondering if that would work like the a6300 does with this lenses.
