Amazing lens that can be had as an add on for lots of kits. Amazing price with a kit at $150. One thing for people looking to use this for a first time DSLR and bird photography is you need the lens hood, lots of white washing with birds as sometimes more than not the bird and the sun is not in a perfect balance. I have a cheapo hood from Amazon and it works great. at 400mm EQFL it will work great for Passerine birds as you can usually get pretty close to them. It also tracks smaller birds nicely, much better than i seen off the old 75-300 kit add on. One of my favorite lenses to use with Extension tubes, just a all around fun and damn amazing for a $150 kit add on. Thanks Dustin for another great review!

As always your episodes are excellent Dustin. Thank you for your efforts. I have used the 55-250STM a great deal on the M1 (home built 2.5 magnification LCD cushioned viewfinder) and some on the 7D1, and recently compared the experience and results of my 300 f4L IS. Love my f4L and the images are better, but the IS of the more modern 55-250 STM is truley twice as good. With good PS skills, good support and generous amounts of frames I was able to get from empty nest to fledglings of a an Anna's Hummer with the 55-250 STM IS and the meager EOS-M version 1. Plenty of detail and accurate colors, from about 15 feet away peeking from behind a tree without mother chasing me away but a couple times.

Dustin, thanks for your reviews. We have had the old Canon 75-300mm for 10+ years. But we have to replace. I understand the cheaper 75-300mm is probably not worth getting these days, but this 55-250mm rates very well. However I'm concerned about stepping back from 300mm to 250mm. We want it for wildlife photography in Africa amongst other things. Do you think we'll notice the 50mm? The price step up to the newer 70-300 USM is large, but wondering what you think about going from a 300 back to 250mm...? Cheers

Hi Dustin. Currently I need to buy a lens in the 18-300mm range. A zoom lens. I have the Canon 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, and Canon EF-S 24 f/2.8. I have seen your videos and I was impressed by the Canon 50-250mm IS STM that you talked about very well, years ago. My camera is a Canon 77D which is APSC. I would like to know if the Canon 50-250mm IS STM lens is better than the Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS ['Nano'] USM II or if it is even better than the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5- 5.6 IS USM ['Nano']. ¿Which of those three should I buy? I want a lens that allows for sharp photos but is not that expensive. I can't spend on the L series and the Sigma Art is very expensive here in Peru. I also don't want to buy glasses that are second hand or used. Please appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thank you.

I've seen some guys who've modded this lens to fit a speedbooster with EF to EF-M mount by replacing the mount plate and using that to increase the aperture (although this can also increase the focal lengths too about 62-284). They say by doing that it improves the bokeh. However, won't it also reduce the quality of the photos? I mounted it on a full frame camera and it gives me a photo of only 9 megapixels. Not sure if this will be the same on a crop sensor+speedbooster 🤔 Your thoughts?
@DustinAbbottTWI Жыл бұрын
Speedboosters are hit and miss, in my experience. I'm not quite sure how it would work here, as typically speedboosters are used with full frame lenses on APS-C cameras. That wouldn't be the case with EF-S to EF-M.
@marknongkhlaw1674 Жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI you're right in pointing that out. And then there's also a risk of the speedbooster glass touching the cam sensor if one uses the wrong or faulty mod. Thanks a lot for the insight 🙏

Hmm, I think you may find the focal length a little long unless you've got a fair bit of space in your "studio" space. Something like the 40mm f/2.8 STM might be a better choice for what you want.

I recently purchased the Canon EOS M50 and I wish to add a budget telephoto lens. I’m debating between the Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM Lens and the Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 Image Stabilization STM Lens. I feel the 250mm (with crop factor 400mm), price and sharpness is the better decision over the EF-M telephoto. Do you have any advice to assist in my decision making? 🤨

Hey Dustin. I’m wavering back and forth between a 55-250mm and a 70-200mm f/4L. I can get the 55 for $150 brand new, and the 70-200 L for 999 brand new. My question is, how does the image quality really compare between the two? Is is really that much of a difference? A $750 difference? I would be using this on a cropped sensor, 90D to be exact. So not even sure if the benefits of an L would even show. I would be shooting landscape only. Never focusing on one part of the image over another. Never portrait. Also looking for that nice compression effect, exaggerating the background. Thanks!

I owned the 55-210 for a while, but I never found it very easy to focus with, and thus I didn't get as many keepers. I would prefer the Canon lens, actually
@diegobrava4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dustin, Great Vídeo! The big question is whether to choose 55-250mm (for portability + image stabilization + cost/benefit) or the 70-200mm (for clarity + image sharpness + best long-term investment). Taking into account the use basically for PORTRAITS, with the use of Canon Speedlite Flash Speedlite 430EX III, which would you indicate between the two lenses in question? I believe it is the doubt of many. Thank you in advance!
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
If your priority is portraits, go with the 70-200mm

Would ef 70-200 f4L is2 usm be a worthwhile upgrade to the efs 55-250 f4-5.6 is stm? I shoot all focal lengths of the stm lens at f5.6. I'd hope to be able to use f4 with the 70-200??

It is a solid upgrade. It's a fantastic lens.

It’s not bad, though you will need decent light. This is not a fast lens in terms of the aperture.

No, you could not. It will not physically mount.

It does mount with the same Ef to efm adapter, but then the FF camera mostly goes into crop mode and the image is only 9 megapixels

Hi Dustin, I love your videos and write ups as they have helped me a lot! I am not a professional but enjoy the hobby and taking pics of friends/family and out doors. I’m currently using a M50 and am looking for a good telephoto lens for the range I’m missing. Right now, I have the 15-45 EFM is stm Kit lens, EF 50mm 1.8 (with viltrox speed booster and the cannon mount adapter), and the 10-18mm which I really don’t use a whole lot. I’m currently debating between EFS 55-250mm IS STM in this video and the Tamron 18-200mm Di iii VC that you reviewed as well. The price points and quality on both seem great. Comparing both, which would you say has the better image quality overall? Any advice since you have used and reviewed both of these? Thanks! -ethan
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
I would say go for either the 55-250 or the EF-M 55-200mm. The later is smaller and lighter and has excellent image quality as well.

Hello Dustin. I enjoy your reviews very much thank you. I have a question. I have been using this lens for a number of years now on a 100d and enjoy airshow photography . I have been given a 60D and would like to upgrade my lens. I had thought about the Sigma or Tamron 100-400 but would like a lens I could use for travel etc. would I see a lot of difference if I upgraded to a Canon EF 70-300MM F/4-5.6L IS USM. Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
You would see some but not much difference. This lens is fairly good optically.
@andrewlamb31592 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you for your quick reply . I guess I would benefit from the extra reach or carry on saving for a 400. It would be the toss up between the Sigma and the Tamron. 👍

Yes - put the camera into Live View and visually see what you like best. In those settings a slight underexposure actually produces a more dynamic image.

The STM system is way batter at autofocus than USM. Guess it depends on the camera as well, but USM has to much noise from clicking gears for video.
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
For video noise, yes, and for smoothness of focus pulls. For stills photography, however, I would take USM any day of the week.
