This was the last ELAN camera and one of the very last film cameras in general released by Canon. Much like it's ELAN & EOS film camera brothers, it's an amazing camera for the price. I was very happy to find this copy on the used market a few months ago and finally get around to reviewing it. I love the ELAN series and this is the pinnacle of it. I can't recommend it enough. If you own one let me know or if you're thinking about picking one up let me know too! Thanks so much for watching!

Here are 2 great starter lenses for your EOS film camera setup. You’ll be good with either choice. The 50mm is usually more affordable, has a 1.8 aperture and renders awesome images. The 40mm is super sharp and compact but doesn’t open as wide and usually costs more. You can’t go wrong with either. ( These are affiliate links)

The 7NE is maybe my favorite camera of all time. I had one many years ago and it was stolen along with some other gear and I replaced it, but man... this video has me nostalgic for another one!!! Beautifully made review and I agree with your points 100%.

Finally! I was waiting for this review. This is my current go-to camera for film photography and I absolutely love using it. Thank you for providing a review of this. One thing that should be mentioned also is its compatibility with Canon's ETTL-II flashes. I use my Canon 430exii with this and my photos came out properly exposed. I normally wouldn't use flash with any of my film cameras but I would so with this camera. If any Canon user wishes to be a hybrid shooter i.e. digital and film, I would highly suggest getting this camera as it would provide a seamless workflow especially in regards to gear.

Great point about the ETTL-II flashes. And I agree, this is a great choice for the Canon digital shooter who wants to add a film camera to their collection. Thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate the feedback and support.

Great review - I use my Elan 7NE more than my EOS 3, mostly because of the weight - both terrific cameras

I have to agree on the weight. It's also why I would often reach for this rather than my EOS 5. If only this had spot metering though, it would be the perfect camera!

How would you compare the auto focus between the 7NE and 3?

Rumor has it that the eye control calibration system was supposely an improvement over the one of its predecesor the Elan IIe but miserably failed for the first "Made in Japan" production batch of the 7e. (This was an assembly defect) ... The issue was later corrected with the very latest "Made in Taiwan" batch of the same camera and subsequently fixed and improved for the 7ne which was entirely manufactured in Taiwan. By the same time digital was taking over and the entire eye control project went into Canon's recycling bin... Apparently they drooped the expensive patent for which would've been extremely costly to incorporate EC into their latest and already high priced and sofisticated Dslr's of that time.

Do you know if the sold in Japan model, the EOS 7s, is the same as the Taiwan made Elan 7ne? Or rather is it the same as the Japan made Elan 7e? I can't seem to find info online. I want to buy the 7ne, but currently there are only two available on eBay.
@francho2516

@@munkieluva The sold in Japan only 7s is the same as the sold in the Americas 7ne, there was not a Japan only version for the 7n. Keep in mind that for the models sold in Japan only it does not nesesarily mean that are from the batches that were produced in Japan. The 7e is the earlier version. For a complete list of all the eos film cameras in chronological order of production by year take a look in Wikipedia @... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_Eos The 7n/ 7ne are somehow difficult to find nowadays and depending on condition or what they may come attached with they may command higher prices than their predecessors 7/7e. I recently bought a 7n in Etsy with battery pack, flash and standard zoom lens for $400 shipping included and it is mint and flawless. I think the seller had more of those in stock if you like me to point you I need to look for the name of the seller and post the link. I hope this was of help. Regards! Fran

@@francho2516 Yes that was very helpful. That wikipedia page us is informative too, and it's references. I think I still want the 7ne. I want the eye control, even if I'll barely use it, and the newer finished surface and raised textures. Also if the 7ne has less likelihood of defects, then if seems like a safer purchase. Can you please point me to that Etsy shop? Thank you very much!

Thanks for all the info on the Elan system. I just picked up an Elan 7e and can't wait for it to get here so I can shoot with it. I also like the way you jump cut from one talking head segment to the next... very cool.

Awesome! Congrats on the Elan7e! One of my all-time favorites. And thank you for the kind words about my editing. This video was little more dramatic than most of my recent ones. I should revisit what I did in this one more often. Congrats again and thank you for watching and commenting! Best of luck with your camera! Let me know how it works out.

It's crazy how good the Canon Rebel T2 is. It's was released six months after the Elan 7n and is pretty much the same camera in a tiny body. I think I like the T2 even better as a result.

@@CraigBergonzoni Yeah you should! I use it with the 40mm pancake. The plastic Canons are so ugly compared to a nice FD-mount body, but man, sometimes it's nice to have AF and a flash for party snapshots and a hike when you don't want to be bogged down by a hefty metal camera. I do like the 7NE, too. I'm just less likely to grab it because of the size and weight difference. I got the version called the 7s from an Japanese eBay seller.

Again, another great review. The only thing I wish the 7e and 7ne had was the 45 point focus and spot metering like the EOS 3. Other than that, both are great examples of Canon refinement. However, just a bit of a heads up. For years I've wanted the battery grip and finally got my hands on one. The day I placed the order for the battery grip I also went out shooting. When I got home I went to remove the last roll of film I shot and the back would not open. Then all of a sudden the door popped open and a tiny piece of plastic went flying. The small nib of the latch broke off. Kinda hard to load film if the back won't close. Fortunately I was able to find a replacement latch on line. So, it looks like I'll be playing camera repairman as soon as the part comes in. For under $15 I'll be getting a replacement latch and the tools needed to do the job. Does the EOS 3 have the same plastic latch in the body?
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 4 жыл бұрын
Oh that sucks about the broken latch. The EOS 3 has a different latch than the Elan. It's more similar to that of the EOS 1 models.
@anyhoot47
@anyhoot47 4 жыл бұрын
@@CraigBergonzoni Well, things wear out and once I get the latch the 7e will be capturing the light. Today I had to bench another great camera because of injuries, a Konica III rangefinder with a Konishiroku 48mm f2.0 lens. Looks like a minor lubrication problem with the leaf shutter. Plan C, I've got a Petri 1.9 rangefinder with it's Orikkor 45mm f1.9. lens. If you are stuck with one lens, make it a good one.

Nice video series of the elan's. I just recently purchased a elan iie now thinking I should've held out for the 7ne. I'm more of a Minolta guy with seeing other camera manufacturers having back lot screen I feel Minolta did it best in the 800si. It'll back lite automatically in low light or not at all in daylight no button to press to activate the back lite. Anyway I hope to use my elan and compare.
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 3 жыл бұрын
That's pretty cool about the Minolta! I haven't shot with those yet. Let me know how the Elan IIe works out for you. And definitely keep an eye out for an ELAN 7 or 7n (7e or 7ne). Thanks for watching and commenting! let me know how it all goes for you.
