When it was released I was like MEHHHH! It was too expensive with very lackluster specs compared to the competition not to mention the horrible crop in 4k. I was shooting with Sony A7iii and A7r3, I'm still shooting with Sony for both photo and video primarily for my vlogs BUT then they made the price drops, the firmware updates which gave it an accurate EYE AF (the Sony is still king when it comes to AF performance IMO it is second to none), and the biggest thing that actually happened is they released the 15-35mm f2.8 IS RF lens! Now I only shoot my vlogs with the EOS R and I'm also thinking of buying another one.

I will definitely keep using it as my "second" for portrait work. But while I know the R5 and R6 are "out there," I just cannot afford the 5, and really DO love everything I've researched about the R. The Good Ol' R! For me....what you said makes SUCH good sense! I've been torn on getting one of these as my next upgrade. My 5D mkiii is my go to camera, but I'd like higher resolution for crop ins. I agree that not having a top display would be a big loss for me, so the new R6 (according to the predictions) wouldn't do it for me. The R5 looks amazing, but the price might be too much for my budget. I love having dual card slots especially for events, but I'm considering getting an R and using my mkiii for a backup. Great video Tom, as usual! Although I just got a M50 for my video....and it's awesome!

Thank you! There’s a new rumor that the R5 will be under $4000, which puts it in line with the other 5D releases. That’s beyond my budget, but much better than some of the other higher rumored prices. The biggest step up on any of the R cameras come from the Mark iii would be autofocus in video!

Form factor was exactly what I needed. Flip out screen was perfect for those 'round the corner shots (I shoot mostly real estate). Low light AF is amazing. I agree that the EOS R is pretty great but I must say some things that sometimes bother me are: -The absence of a joystick, I know that you can use the touchscreen and it works super smoothly after 1.4, but I feel like it's sometimes a little hard to reach without loosening your grip -The battery life is a little weak, I don't know if it's my batteries but I feel like I cannot use it for more than a day like I used to do with the 80D (I hope the new batteries from the R5 will be compatible!!) -Maybe IBIS, for smoother video recordings? But apart from that I am super satisfied!
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I can agree with your points. Even if not a joystick, the standard dial/scroll wheel on the back would have been nice. Battery life has been great for me, and most of my batteries are a bit older. It's not quite as good as my 6DII, but I think it's normal for DSLRs to have better battery life since they don't constantly consume as much power. And IBIS would definitely be cool, so I'm glad that the new cameras will have it.

6:12 Of course Canon is working on the EOS R Mark ii, and per the rumors, it's going to be a lot nicer than the R6. great video! I have about the same likes and dislikes as you. I'm one of the rare ones who thinks the 4k crop is kind of useful, allowing for more functionality out of wider lenses and ultimately letting me get more use from less gear (whenever very specific resolutions aren't as important as very specific framing). I also HATE the multi button press required for mode switching, and in that same area I hate that the auto focus modes (particularly annoying in photo) also require multiple buttons to change-- the 5Diii and 5Div have registered auto focus points so you can grab a different point or area by holding one button or another, to instantly engage whatever focus mode based solely on muscle memory without checking or changing anything, but the R and RP both require you to press a few buttons (and also a menu scroll on the RP) to switch from say, a single point in one shot to tracking in servo. It's the most infuriating work flow I've ever encountered with a canon camera and for some reason I feel like I'm the only one complaining about it.

Besides, I see a lot of people mocking about 'only' 20mpx on the R6, while the R5 has 45. But I feel like the R series are actually built for videographers in general more than photographers and now every photographer on internet is mocking about the mpx...

Great review. Like the positive vibe (tired of 10 things wrong with...). Also - you sound like the Bible project guy - or he sounds like you. Subscribed.

Great video! I was *also* thinking of your desire to have a *second* R for the b-roll of the R. 🤪 Thanks for the 1 year review!

The I’ll be in a real pickle when I want b roll of both R’s! 😬

While the EOS R5 is basically a dream come true, it’s way out of my budget... but the R is more than enough for my needs, so I look forward to picking one up for an even lower price now that the R5 is all the buzz
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I’m also very curious to see what will happen to R pricing when the new cameras are officially released 🤔
@LeoNelBuilds4 жыл бұрын
The Enthusiasm Project you can already get one for $1499 on the Canon website.... I guess we’ll see 😁
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I’ve also heard that if you call Canon direct and ask for “Loyalty Program” ricing you’ll get even more. I’ve never done it myself though.
@kent20001004 жыл бұрын
I’d agree with is you in general, but really wish it had ibis.
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I do too, BUT a while back I was playing around with the R and the Sony A7III, which has IBIS. When I compared the footage I couldn’t believe how much smoother the Sony was. It looked like the R didn’t even have any stabilizer turned on...but then I realized I mixed up the footage and had it backwards. The electronic stabilizer of the R outperformed the Sony’s IBIS by quite a bit! Of course, this is anecdotal, but I found it interesting.

The Enthusiasm Project - About 9 months ago I bought my my first Canon, eos R. I really like it compared to my Olympus. Mostly, I’m a stills enthusiast. Video is a little over my head, bit rates, fps and 4K vs 1080p. It’s kind of all Greek to me. Enjoyed your video.

I’m glad to hear it!

Canon has a EF lens for every photo and video situation. They are still developing the RF mount so they are spending their RD into the new mount. Think about having a new baby compared to a pre teen. A newborn is going cost money every check; diapers, wipes, clothes, special food.
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
Yep- this is why I am currently sticking with EF lenses, especially since the adapter works so well.

Good video but this camera is expensive for $2600. 4K crop, no 60fps and no IBIS are stupid. I wanted to get it for videos but i am fine with my Canon EOS 77D 😁
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
The 77D is outstanding! But the R does have 60fps and is roughly $1700 ( opposed to $2600). 👍

I get it, especially with the insane deals now. I finally ordered my speedbooster for the R, so I’m excited to try that. And for the record, I was setting up a stream yesterday and said to myself, “You know, a third camera would be helpful here...”

I will definitely purchase and USSR after the price will drop a bit I'm still in the ABC world because of the price I don't want to pay too much still loyal to my 80d from Canon works great but I would love to switch to br40 better options and bitter Orleans elections but yeah thank you for the video you certainly help me decide I probably will buy one mirrorless full-frame mirrorless aps-c like and the m5 mark ll or something like it cuz I think I need one from each

Definitely got to do what works best for you, and the 80D is an absolutely awesome camera.

This camera is good but does have some real problems, here they are: 1. No ibis 2. No 1080 120 fps 3. Only shoots up to 5 fps with continuous autofocus 4. Not many affordable rf lenses If none of those things bug you than this is a very good camera to buy. I sold mine because the sonys didn't have these issues but I did like the eosr.

I mean, it is an awesome camera, but so are the Sonys 👍
@PaulFeinberg4 жыл бұрын
Use whatever works best for you......The Sony AF is better for sure, but like he said there isn't really a bad camera out these days. I think one of the biggest drawl backs for me on Canon is the weight and size. My sony lenses are so much smaller than the Canon RF lenses (and cheaper too lol). I like having no issues using the weebill S with my Sony with pretty much any lens.
@bojangbg4 жыл бұрын
It's basically overpriced. Missing so many features on those eos cameras that i sold my eos R after 2 months after frustration. But the flip screen is the best thing here...

Native glass is insanely expensive and therefore (no matter how nice) this camera is inaccessible. The camera made me want the native glass because it's so good, fast, and accurate, but it's just impossible unless it's your job to use your camera (or you have a lot of disposable income).
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
The prices are absurd right now, but it works great with EF glass, which I personally love 👍

40+ years with Canon. EOS R = Nope. The first two things that come to mind are battery life and that touch bar.
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I've found the battery life to be excellent. Easily on par with any other Canon DSLR I've owned, especially those that take the LPE6. The touch bar is definitely a "controversial" feature. Seems like Canon gave up on that one.
