Samguw, this is the most complete description of the EOS R I have seen. I have been shooting Canon since the AE-1 Program in the 80’s. I just got the R 2 months ago and it has taken me that long to understand the possibilities and customizations of this camera. It is an engineering miracle. It is the most flexible camera ever. Yes, it’s not a fast action camera, but, for everything else it is amazing. If you can’t shoot fast with the R after fully customizing this camera, it’s on the user! I added the battery grip because I like a bigger feel and the extra battery power, though, the battery life has never been an issue. I have the EF adapter with the control ring and have it set to ISO. I find it super handy to have it right next to the lens, instantly available! You have explained everything I love about this camera I have found to love about it and agree with you on everything! Keep up the great shots!!!

Appreciate this so much man! Even with the R5, it's not as customisable as the R and I find myself shooting slower with it (had a pre production unit for a couple of days). The R is still a camera that holds its own weight even with newer cameras come out. Cheers man!

Firstly I trust you and your loved ones are all safe and healthy, during these unsettling times. 10/10, the best review of the EOS R, especially for photographers (the majority of reviews are focused on videographers) thank you. I currently have the EOS 500D & 80D, and will purchase the EOS R, precisely for the reasons you stated, it's more than the mere sum of it parts (or what's written on a facts sheet), the EOS R in many cases is equal to and may also out perform cameras, both in its class and the class above. It's reported limitations, should be looked upon as an opportunity for us to develop and increase our skills and knowledge of photography; again 10/10. Stay safe and healthy Samguw.
@samguw4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael! Thanks so much man, I really really appreciate the kind words. Glad I could help. 100% agree on looking at limitations as an opportunity but I also think critical comments are important to make sure camera companies constantly make changes. Hope you'r redoing well too!

As Hank Fink commented, I really enjoyed your video about the Canon EOS R's features. Mainly because you concentrate on the still photography aspect of it. As you watch the plethora of videos about the camera on YT, you quickly find out that many of those are focused on the video, which as funny as it may seem, to me, a camera packaged as a camera is something I use to shoot still. But the frontier between camera and video camera has now been altered. One other draw back of many YT videos is the necessity to speak fast. You do too. I know that you are trying to pack as much information in a specific time frame. And I am also aware that several watchers want to go fast. I am the opposite. I am concise and precise, and if the diction has to be altered to obtain it, then be it. I actually stop watching videos right away if the word flow is too high. I want to "absorb" the knowledge, if too fast, it takes an effort to decode the message. Or at least, it does to me. Or I lose concentration, or it becomes painful. Because the bottom line is, all these videos are "talking heads", and it is very easy to disconnect after a while. I could watch your entire video without being too bored, because you actually went through the topics in a fluent kind of way. You did not try to overdo it. I liked that you inserted some examples. I liked that you developed on the reasons why you got a specific view or opinion of the feature. There was a lot of good information in this video. I would rate it as one of the best out there, and as Hank did, I watched a lot of them, including on the EOS RP because this was the reason I got here in the first place. Deciding between the R and the RP. Your review has been very helpful to me, and I have now made up my mind, and I know which camera I am going to purchase to either replace or supplement on my 5D Mark III;

10:52 - TOUCHSCREEN on the EOS R is terrible compared to the 5D Mk4. When scrolling through images it's very sluggish when compared to the 5D Mk4, really embarrassing when I'd have clients try to swipe through images. Day and night difference compared to the 5D Mk4. It's definitely improved in the EOS R5 though so I'm happy for that (and getting dual card slots again).

Great review! It’s kinda hard these days to find an EosR review from a photographers perspective. It’s All video these days. I got into the R for the rf 70-200 for obvious reasons. Their lenses are a gem and Canon seems to be taking the mirrorless world seriously. I like the skins from Alpha GVRD. I eventually want the 85, 100-500 and 15-35
@samguw4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! If I was 100% in the RF, the first lens I would get is the 70-200. That is an absolute piece masterpiece of a lens design. the 15-35 is equally up to par and blows the EF line out of the water in terms of sharpness wide open. I do find them hard for manual focusing but the R holds up. pretty well in AF. How do you like the skins? thinking of getting one
@davetv81714 жыл бұрын
samguw the skins are very nice and leave no residue. They add a good layer of protection without being too thick like the easy cover. The easy cover does help soften the grip though but makes using some buttons tougher. I see you have the red one. One skin I know you’d like is the Red Mamba. People with the Z6 and Z7 says the rubber on the body can start to break apart. I also have the Z6 and recently ordered one for it. Funny story, I have the same skin on the RF 24-70 and 70-200. I was trying to put the lens hood of the 24-70 on the 70-200 thinking it was the latter. I wondered why it wouldn’t fit. Amazing how small they made the 70-200. It sunk me into the R. Now I’m really wanting the R5.

I plan on buying this as a replacement for my 5D II next year. I wonder how good the Eye AF is these days and if I can trust lenses like the 40mm EF pancake that feels pretty slow in my 5D II in the newer R. I guess mirrorless just focuses faster but I wanna know if it's truly accurate or a bit hit or miss (I use center point back button focusing with lenses from 16 to 50, so I guess it will be alright, since my current camera is 12 years old)

The R5 is amazing in the stills department but I find the 1dx much more reliable for video despite having "lesser specs". I prefer reliability over resolution. But the R5 is no slouch either. I left a comment on your Instagram about my issue with my eos r but I’ll write here too. I have a problem where when I take pictures of my subjects my camera (eos r w/35mm native) the pictures are too sharp! It would be great if I shot architecture but I shoot people. My photos are coming off very sharp from the hair and everything. Example is I took a picture of my cousin from like 8 feet away and his beard looks so details and glittery but when I zoom in the shine disaapears. So much that it looks grainy at some points. My iso is low so that’s not the problem. However I think the problem is the sharpness strength, fineness and threshold. I have strength at 1, fineness at 2, and threshold at 2. Does having the fineness lower make it sharper? Please help me I’ve never had so many options for sharp
@samguw4 жыл бұрын
Hey man sorry for the late reply. No.1 I definitely suggest shooting in raw. It'll take away all the over sharpening you find. Secondly, try using another lens. As much as we love sharp lenses, sometimes it can be TOO sharp. Something like the EF 50 1.2 will soften up your photos. Other than that your other option could be to soften in post. Hope this helps!

Hey Dude! I just watched the whole thing. Really like your review. I switched from Canon to the Sony A7III. (Still have my 5D mkIII though). The Sony produces incredible good pictures and the Video quality is so great (4k, Slowmo..). But..I still grab my Canon :D The Canon is just a nicer feel to shoot with. Same with your R. The Sony is a great workhorse, that really gets the job done and produces excellent results!! The Autofocus (and Eye AF) is hard to beat and the dynamic range in the files is amazing! But still, the Canon is more fun to shoot with, to hold in the hand, to grab. I'd love to have the R for like Everyday things and recording Talking Video. I'd still use the Sony for like Weddings and such. ^_^ Hope you're having a nice week Sir!! :) Dani
