New pricing from B&H Photo for the holidays: an EOS R with accessories for $1499 or with a lens for a little over $2000: bhpho.to/2GzxnFn. That's up to $1000 off, making the EOS R very attractive for that price. That's cheaper than I bought it for!!

Yes...quite a bargain Dustin. And other items are often bundled with the camera and lens. The FF mirror less market is extremely competitive...and given the competition in mirror less in other sensor configurations, one might be able to purchase the Eos R AND the Fuji XT3 for just a bit more than the Eos R and kit lens alone about a year ago.

I hear you on that point. I just received an offer for an additional 200 off, bringing the cost to 1299. I have been on the Sony ship for a while now but the price is so cheap, that I think I’m going to buy another canon. Maybe in the future all cameras will be free as a means of selling 2k-3k lenses to the consumer.

B&H sent me a $200 off (up to) offer and no sales tax when paid with PayBoo. Wife says go for it .., bless her heart, but I'm still on the fence. Currently have a 7Dm2 and 6Dm2 and the R would probable replace the 6Dm2. We travel a lot and I would really miss the having the GPS. Have until the 18th to take advantage of B&H's offer.

I got my EOS 6D right when the EOS R came out, I'm really happy with my 6D, but I am super jealous of the eye autofocus for portraits, and the low light performance of the EOS R is just jaw dropping at higher ISO. Only thing that holds me back is the fact that I do quite a bit of sports photography, so that's pretty much a deal breaker. I really don't want to sink the money into a 5D Mk IV only to watch them drop a Professional EOS R variant a couple of months later.

Read somewhere that R mark ii is going to be announced around May, 2020. It's pretty clear that the R ii is going to be better than 5D IV in almost every aspect. I mean if you bump up the fps little bit, add a 2nd slot and a joystick to the current R, it's already better than 5D IV. In addition to that better ergonomics, better autofocus, better weather sealing, better evf and new sensor gonna make the R ii a force to reckon with. IBIS is also a possibility.

Nothing to be jealous about. The R is maybe 1/2 stop cleaner than the 6D, which isn't noticeable in actual use. www.dpreview.com/reviews/image-comparison?attr18=lowlight&attr13_0=canon_eos6d&attr13_1=canon_eosr&attr13_2=nikon_d750&attr13_3=sony_a7iii&attr15_0=raw&attr15_1=raw&attr15_2=raw&attr15_3=raw&attr16_0=6400&attr16_1=6400&attr16_2=6400&attr16_3=6400&attr171_1=1&normalization=compare&widget=1&x=0.148660594632093&y=-0.9975273897294425

As a 6D mark II shooter I am really interested in the EOS R for these main reasons: image quality, no focus calibration, better AF, eye AF. The downsides that stop me are: battery life, no R mount tele lenses (I need a native 100-400 or a third party R mount 150-600, I'm hoping it comes out in the next years), lower fps than what I have now. I am seriously considering it though, I like my 6D2 very much and it's giving me anything I need both in landscapes and wildlife. The struggle with AF calibration is a pain though, especially since I use mostly third party lenses that sometime can be not as perfect as first party ones. I don't know, I will try to try it out with my lenses adapted to see if I enjoy it but may just be better to wait for the next iteration of the camera

@RichFreeman
@RichFreeman 5 жыл бұрын
@@rumtreibbaer That's the boat I think I'm in. The current $1300 EOS R sale is very tempting, but I almost exclusively shoot action, and I mainly do so with Sigma telephotos. I feel like the EVF issues and slower frame rate will bother me with this sort of shooting, and it will be a long time before I'm buying $1k RF telephotos that are decent. The 6Dii isn't a bad camera at all, so it probably makes sense to just wait for a new generation where all the compromises have been eliminated and it is just a complete step up. Now, if I were shooting portraits/landscape/etc or cared more about the first frame than the next 10 then the EOS R would be a better camera all around.

Using Canon eos r for half a year now. And my favourite feature is a manual focus assistance. It is not only very precise and reliable and joy to use, but it is also a manual replication of "eye af", when eye is being tracked and by rotating simply a focus ring on a lens eye gets perfectly in focus. That was the reason I pulled the trigger and add plenty of Zeiss and voigtlander glass to my kit.

Hi Dustin. I am glad u have it, can't wait for your reviews of rf glass👍 Since you have controlled ring adapter (as I do) i wanted to share with you and others my favourite way of shooting indoors with it- Camera in Manual mode with auto iso set and control ring set to exposure compensation(which effectively will be altering auto iso) - only some cameras gives you this possibility but thankfully Eos R does. Lets say you have 85mm lens - so we set 160 shutter speed(according to double the focal lenght rule - would not be comfortable shutting slower than this due to lack of is or ibis) and then set the desired aperture, and camera will set "appropriate" iso that most of the times will get you in the ballpark. Then I just turn control ring to finetune exposure either darker or brighter with peace of mind that my other settings - shutter speed and aperture stays the same. I love to shoot events/weddings like this. Its quick thanks to auto iso that always gets me in the ballpark in fast changing shooting environment and removes thinking ;-) about the settings as you end up just adjusting - darker/brighter with control ring. You also end up with the best possible quality image for the scene as iso will always be the lowest to achieve desired image as the other settings - shutter speed and F are already "maxed out". Shooting like this i have 90% keepers, I am quicker, not missing ibis as much as I set minimum comfortable shutter speed and can focus on pictures/moments more. I am not discovering anything new here ;) but not many people shoot this way and know about possibility of setting auto iso under M mode - and this feauture is awesome. Regards.

Hello. Great way to use a camera. I use the same setup with my a7ii. Difference is I use the dedicated control for exposure compensation instead of being on the lens, which would be incredible. As I think that most actions can be taken with 1/80th or 1/100th of a second, I would definitely say ibis is an incredible advantage. Just shot my cat with a manual Samyang 135 f2 at 1/60th just with aquarium light at night. Perfect sharp. Thanks for sharing.

Welcome back to Canon, Dustin. As I keep telling everyone: Do you really think the 28-70 f/2L, 50mm f/1.2L, 85mm f/1.2L and fabulous f/2.8 trio was really designed for the EOS R and EOS RP? Some good things to come with this camera system and its ability to adapt EF lenses so incredibly well make it a no-brainier for Canon photographers and those looking for a camera that really works well. I just wish they could have matched the performance of the new M6 Mark II...that camera is a wicked little speed demon and makes the EOS R look like a really lethargic camera.

Glad to hear, Dustin, that you will be reviewing more RF lenses. I did watch your original review of the R last year, and I agreed with many of the points. But I was so eager to start using the great primes that I did purchase an R, and it has turned out to be an amazing portrait camera. I've been able to customize it to have everything available with just a press or two through the EVF, including, finally, flash exposure-compensation (using the DOWN directional button to bring up the flash menu, then one more press and the FEC number-line pops up). Clearly this is not a jack-of-all-trades pro body, but it outdoes the 5DIV for portraits by a significant margin--because of its precise AF and real-time exposure feedback. There is no way to get around the cropped 4k video. It's a significant compromise, no doubt, for videographers, and Canon must move beyond it in the next R body. As for this "second look" review, it does seem that you are telling us the only reason you have bought it is so you can review lenses. Fair enough, but sort of anti-climatic after sitting through a summary of last year's videos. But that's ok! Your lens reviews are some of the best anywhere, and many photographers trust your insights. Happy holidays!

As a Sony user, even I’m considering the EOS R because of the RF glass, new price drop, and updated AF. But the single card and slower FPS for action are still issues for me. Maybe the next EOS R body will be the one for me, meanwhile the RF lineout will get more filled out with more variety and potentially affordable options. That being said, Sony A7iii and A7Riii is getting the job done fine. Can pretty much shoot anything in any situation with no real shortcomings.

Canon EOS Rm2 rumors floating around that they're already testing it, specs may come soon, and pretty sure IBIS and dual card slot are already coming. I'm highly motivated to purchase the R now for the new low price and upgrade when the next one comes, hopefully fixing the shortcomings of the first one. May as well start building my lens collection now:) I've been thinking about the A7III for a while and despite the great features I still find it missing something that really makes me wanna use it and keeps me as happy as a Canon. Canon got some kinda special sauce in their user experience, just gotta catch up a bit on the features now that they're pressured, same as Apple is doing right now.

Thanks for this, Dustin. After so many years avoiding Canon due to the ‘bad reputation’ of them crippling their cameras and that they were so slow going into mirrorless, I just bought into the EOS R system. First it was the set with the RF24-105 kit lens. Then added the RF35 a week after and shortly after the RF15-35. The entire system is amazingly user friendly, the lenses are spectacular, and the fully articulating screen is perfect for what I want to do with my photography. So exciting is this system to me, that I’m giving my Leica SL with M-lenses a bit of a rest; and contemplating some changes to that set-up in favor of Canon. The lack of dual card slots on the R do not concern me much as I’m just a hobbyist. The only minor annoyance is the lack of built-in intervalometer. Was not a deal breaker. I also bought the BR-E1 remote, which for my use is essential and works really well. I’m looking forward to what Canon does with future body upgrades. Although as it stands, the R is sufficient for what I need in the next few years. Didn’t think I would say this after >15 years with the hobby but, good job, Canon! Don’t let your guard down though. Sony is closing in on you for full frame camera market dominance. (And I used to own the Sony A7III too, still a great camera, but the R fits my needs better.)

Regarding ibis, I can tell you it will be extremely difficult to achieve the oly grounds, as the sensor is a lot smaller and the housing is not much different than ff sensors. It's impossible to rotate that much the sensor without increasing the size of the housing. My Sony a850 ff dslr has a better ibis than a7ii (by at least 2 stops) and I would say at least better by 0.5 stops compare with a7r4. So Sony knows how to do it right (they were the first ones), just doesn't have the space, and I imagine Canon and nikon will have similar difficulties. Best regards

@@noyesphotography1979 I suspect that it is just hard to deliver. I mean, none of the manufacturers have really delivered a spectacular mirrorless body for sports, which suggests it is just pushing the envelope. Maybe if they dropped the sensor resolution their processors could handle the pixels in realtime and make them more responsive with a higher framerate, but of course people focus on the megapixels, and then chances are you could still do better with a DSLR that doesn't have to drop resolution. While more fps would be nice I'm not a pro, so I don't need 14fps/etc. However, 6fps with an EVF that shows me what the lens is pointing at and not what the lens was pointed at 200ms ago would be a good start. Sony seems to be better but it makes me nervous that they still can't focus with an open aperture when shooting continuous. Maybe the next generation of mirrorless will make me want to switch over. It seems like they're better in every way as far as taking the FIRST shot goes, but after that they struggle.

The one of the very few guys, who is a pleasure to watch. Well done, Dustin. Do you remember what I told you about the EOS-R + RF50? ;) Glad you like it. Get your hands on the RF85. It is even better with its BR glass. The EF-RF adapter with the VND is a no-brainer for any OCF photographer - it makes a huge difference keeping you within the "normal" sync speed and being behind the lens, it is color casts free right up to the 9th stop. This reason alone is more than enough for flash and portrait photographers to get it without a 2nd thought. Not sure why you didn't mention this. I don't care much about Sony even if it can make pancakes for breakfast when I don't have even one lens (except the 24-70GM) which renders beautifully and has soul and art in it. Lenses is what matters, not the body. This is where decades of making great lenses and camera bodies comes into play. Canon have set the bar so high with the RF mount, right up there to Leica top primes, that it is super-hard for others to catch and totally impossible for Sony - too pity for them, considering the fact they own Minolta... I'm sure they will finally nail it with A7RXVIV... The focusing with aperture stopped down with their top-tier primes was driving me completely nuts. Never saw a dumber decision that this one, even my 30 y old SLR is opening up the aperture for focusing... khhh... Keep up the good work.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't talk about the Variable ND drop in filter because I haven't used it and don't know firsthand that color casts are well controlled. I'm not sure that I agree about lenses without beautiful rendering on Sony. I've got at least 4 in my kit that I love.
@alexanderivanoff
@alexanderivanoff 5 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI, I feel you - beautiful rendering is highly subjective and is a matter of a personal perception. However, I'm curious to know what are these 4 that you mentioned. One of the things that shows how strong a certain brand is, is the lens system and especially great 35, 50 and 85mm fast primes, which are the most used ones.They still struggle to get a decent 35/1.4, or 1.2 lens - the Sony-Zeiss is an adapted, retro-focus lens, which is far from being great. The 50mm is totally lacking a decent one... 85 mil. discipline is a bit better, but very far from what Canon have packed into RF85, not to mention about Leica APO 90mm. Their 70-200GM is even worse than Canon EF70-200/2.8L IS II or III in terms of performance. I struggled to find a lens that I really like (Their Planar 50/1.4 could be one, but stopped down past f2)... Cheers.

I really like the Sony Zeiss Planar 50mm F1.4, the Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 65mm F2, the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4, and I also love the little Samyang AF 45mm F1.8. The 135mm F1.8 GM is also special.
@alexanderivanoff
@alexanderivanoff 5 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI, my point was for OEM (system native) lenses and not 3rd party. I could agree for the Planar 50/1.4, although it is not up to the optical performance of the RF50/1.2, it still has some soul in it. I absolutely dislike the swirly defocus character of the 135GM - it reminds me of some cheap, Russian lenses from the 80s for $20. You see, that was my point - you're getting a Sony body and start to scratch the head what lens to put on it and reaching for some MF Voigts, Sigma, Samyang, etc... Not that these are bad, but OEM lenses will always be the best choice. Sony has to focus strongly on the quality lenses instead of dropping body after body. I'm also concerned about their narrow mount, which is a huge limitation in front of designing some really great lenses. I bet the future belongs to the RF & L-mounts. Cheers.

Thanks as always for your videos, Dustin. I’ll chime in and say I’ve had an A7III for a year now and shoot landscapes with my Canon lenses via the MC-11 adapter. Coming from an older 6D, the dynamic range is pretty insane and what keeps me attached to it but if it wasn’t for that and I could still have the same file flexibility I’d gladly go for the EOS R. I know one stop difference isn’t huge but it’s nice to have if you’re lifting details from dark files frequently and it’s nice to be able to avoid the noise banding as well. Being able to get the most out of my Canon lenses would also be nice though, as video is very limited with them adapted to the Sony and I’m sure even just for stills they’d be much snappier on a proper Canon mount.

Hi Dustin, Thank you for your trustworthy reviews and comments. I watched your video yesterday and I bought the EOS R today with the regular EF to R adapter and think I need some time to get used to it. Coming from a 5D MK 3 I miss the joystick and the option to go low as ISO50 and hate the sensor bar since day one when I had the chance to try it out at the on the first day at the Photokina in 2018. I think it will grow on me over time but I don't think I am going to sell my old releiable 5D MK3 workhorse. Still love it a lot. Prices in Germany usually are higher than in other markets so it was 2500 Euros when it came out, dropped to 2300 a couple of weeks ago, down another 100 Euros last week and with the Cashback and turn in an old camera option the price with my local dealer was as low as 1799 Euros inc. 19% consumer tax as of December 10th 2019. This plus the updated firmware to 1.6 including the now amazing eye auto focus I could not resist. It's asteal for that price.

thank you for doing a follow up review. I also was very happy to say goodbye to AFMA and focus recompose. The body price that's sub-$2000 for a 5DIV sensor is a great deal. The autofocus on the R almost feels like cheating coming from a dslr. The slow burst rate in AF priority low continuous does bother me a little but for the moment I'll take the near 100% hit rate. Extremely on point talk, couldn't agree more. I moved from Canon to Sony about a year ago, no regrets but sincerely hoping Canon produces a real camera for it's users in mirrorless requiring pro level bodies. I could see myself going back into using Canon if they had all the lenses and better bodies but I do wonder when that time comes what will Sony be rolling out? I wouldn't be surprised if Canon is always years behind the next great technology. I do think all users can thank Sony for bringing viable mirrorless cameras to the forefront, without them I'm not sure any of the makers would be putting any energy into this. Once you use mirrorless it would be very hard to go back as you know.

I'm not sure it's quite as doomsday as that, but Sony did leave the door a little bit open with the a7RIV. It's a great camera, but not necessarily a home run like the a7RIII was (at least in terms of feedback from my audience). Canon definitely needs a knockout in the next round.

@@1WorldAroundYou Most of the differences have to do with size, the RP is lighter (about 200g), the R is easier for me to use touch and drag for the focus points (R I have lower right quadrant to keep my fat nose from changing focus points when using my left eye, with the RP my nose is in the lower right quadrant and I need a conscious effort not to touch or use my right eye). Outside of that I'd say the R has slightly better dynamic range. The upper LCD is a non-issue for me as I have the screen flipped all the time for the focus point feature. The differentiation in the focus system that was present between 6D and 5D is not present here anymore either. IMO, if you want best picture quality and/or have larger body features -> R. If the camera should be as light and small as possible -> RP.

I'm thinking that the EOS R would be a good upgrade from my 5D mk2, for when I'm shooting dimly lit indoor sports with my EF glass. What do you think of the touch bar on the back? It seems like something that everyone complained about when the camera was new, and I suppose the control ring adapter does something to move controls to the front of the camera.

Hey, can i drop in a question that was burning in the back of my head... i bought a 77D beginning of this year ... and i got (back) into capturing some photons. So i was thinking about upgrading to a Fullframe... and now when i finally sort of convinced myself that a EOS R might even be good for me with adapter-fiddling (i cant really afford those fancy RF lenses AND a new body) for my EF lenses (i bought EF as i was already sure to upgrade to fullframe later down the line soon after i got back into that photone catching hobby again). But now.. i heard about EOS R.. MKii ... whats your take on it if one can wait. How much of a deal is the lack of IBIS? As the rumors go the mk 2 might have ibis.. but... if it costs a liver and a half on release i would have to wait at least a year minimum.... should i wait? I have shaky hands... thus i rely a bit to IS more than others (i know people that can shoot my sigma 150-600mm hand held at 600...) Listening to you, having IBIS (with or without a lense with IS) sounds like a VERY helpfull (and hence miss'd) feature on the R? So... lets assume the Mark II would cost 3k or above... is it worth it? Or is the lack of IBIS on the R... well ... a negative point on the spec list but not so dramatic assuming the Mark II could cost easily double ? (knowing that Canon is into the mortgage busines with their pricing)
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, unfortunately you are asking me questions that are impossible to answer. I don't know whether such a camera will have IBIS, when it will come, or what it is will cost. It's hard to predict the future. If you aren't in a rush, though, you might as well wait a few months and see what happens.
@Axonteer

Hey, Thank you for taking your time to answer my question :-) I apprechiate that! I know you cant tell me the future, and i didnt try to force an answer in that regard... even i wish to know the future :-D I was more pointing at the lack of IBIS, is it really that hurting, or could you say for the current price (1800$ for the body + adapter here) its... "fine"? My "issue" is that i have shaky hands, more than others and im not even old... so whenever i hear someone saying "get a fast lense with f1.8 or f2 and you be fine" i have to sigh a little, that only really solves it in perfect situations. On another note, how was your expirience with Adapter juggling? (Assuming you used old EF lenses on it as the RF are apparently very good, but cost a small fotrtune)

I sold my beloved 6D mark 1 and upgraded to Canon EOS R few weeks ago. I love the result I am getting and I also love the constant update. I have a question Mr.abbott. I enjoy using the Eye focus feature. Does it make sense to buy Rokikon/Samyang 85mm F1.2 with EOS R? It is only 800 CAD at the moment and I really wanted to try Rokinon 85mm F1.2 lens but I am afraid that I am making a mistake.

Hi Dustin, I like your reviews. The only thing keeping me in doubt whether to buy this camera or not, is the burst. I rented the Sony A7R4 after having been drawn to Sony for years now. Their auto-focus system is unbeatable atm and the image quality is stunning, but I can't live with the sensor dust it seem to gather more than any other camera I've tried. A buddy of mine raves about this camera all the time. In your Canon guys experience: Is this camera truly better sealed than Sony's?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about internal seals, but what the EOS R has that Sony doesn't is a curtain that comes to cover the sensor whenever the camera is powered off. This helps immensely to keep dust off the sensor when changing lenses.
@JohnDrummondPhoto
@JohnDrummondPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI isn't that "curtain" just the shutter? That said, why don't other companies program their mirrorless cameras to close the shutter when turned off? Will they in the future? It seems simple enough. I've never had sensor dust ever on my DSLRs.
@DustinAbbottTWI

No, it is a separate mechanism from the shutter. It's sole purpose is to protect the sensor, and the R is the only camera to have it right now.

Dustin , I thought I'll ask you this question as you seem more non biased then most channels . A very popular channel that a couple hosts made the statement that duel pixel AF is to slow for fast moving subjects . This seems to be not a correct statement as there is a difference between AF acquisition or lock time and actual subject tracking . The two issues are separate I would think . Do you think it's the actual focus technology of duel pixel that makes it not appropriate for fast moving subjects or rather the slow processor that makes it to slow for subject tracking ?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think they've got that right. The new M6 MK II does 14FPS with DPAF. On the EOS R, I think it is processor and architecture related. We'll see a more sports-oriented model, and I'm sure it will utilize some form of DPAF.

I recently jumped from canon 5d markiii to a Sony a7iii (adapted glass) and miss the colors and have ran into lags using the Sony with flash triggers. I’m sure it may have something to do with adapted lenses but after watching this video, I am wondering if I should switch back. Any thoughts?

If you've mostly been shooting with adapted lenses, switching back should be pretty easy. There are strengths and weaknesses to all systems. You will miss the IBIS, dynamic range, and the superior tracking/burst performance of Sony, but you will probably like the ergonomics and color more on the Canon. You'll have to decide your own priorities here.

I've had the EOS R for 3 days now and can say that I really, really love it. I used it to shoot our church's Christmas program and every image was well exposed and tack sharp. I can usually count on 10 to 20 percent being throwaways. I will miss the GPS, intervalometer, and the RC-6 wireless remote. I have the Bluetooth remote and a new intervalometer on the way. I find GPS through the Canon app a pain but that could be my Galaxy S7. The connection between the R and the phone keeps dropping and has to be repeatedly reestablished. At the current price it can't be beat. Even better with the loyalty discount.

Hello Dustin! Thank you for this great review! I've only recently discovered you while researching for info on the eos r. I'm a long time canon user finally needing to upgrade my mk 3. I am, of course, in a great debate between the eos r and the mk 4!! I was almost sold on the r, when I started reading about evf lag due to the electronic viewfinder, and how it can make it difficult to capture moving subjects. As I am mainly a family photographer shooting little kids running around, this is concerning to me, BUT I am having a hard time finding any information about it, or finding any family photographers who use the eos r. Would you be able to address this? Is it something you've noticed? I'm also curious how the touchscreen holds up in the snow or light rain. Thank you for any insight!
