I have both and I use them both at the same time for my KZbin channels. They both have strong points. If I had to choose, it would be the A7III, lens choice are a huge part of that decision. If anyone goes for the A7III, then there is “ONLY” one lens to start with. That’s the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E. I recently picked one up and realized I have been wasting money on cheaper lenses. The Rokinon 85mm for Sony E is also an incredible value!

I bought the Sony A7iii but ended up selling it for the eos r. My main reasons were I found the Sony frustrating to use and my canon lens often did not perform well. Since getting the eos r I have found it to be a more enjoyable camera to use, the photos and videos are f the same quality as well, this low light argument is rubbish as they both hold up well unless you are photographing in a black hole.as for stabilisation the canon IS lenses perform just as good as the Sony. My experience was that they are both good cameras but the ecosystem is more important than the individual bodies.

Update your firmware and get yourself an Sigma MC-11 Mount. I don't have any issue with my canon lenses even when I do video. I don't think you even bought a Sony A7III because if you do. Also not to mention Sony is way better when coming to video.

Micky Finn I stopped reading when u mentioned “my canon lens often did not perform well”. Canon lens on a Sony body obviously would not perform as well as a Sony native lens on a Sony body, or a canon native lens on a canon body. If you want to get the maximum performance out of a Sony body, get a Sony lens. Genius.

That setup would work great. I was just sharing what I would use. I prefer the ergonomics on the EOS R and I rarely feel like I need IBIS for portraits (although I suppose at events it could be helpful if there isn't much light). If I'm not shooting RAW, I still prefer the Canon color right out of the camera (of course it depends on the use - in a RAW workflow it doesn't matter). I love my a7iii, so I'm definitely not saying it's not a good option. The truth is that it's hard to go wrong here.

Yesterday, I was all in on the Sony A7III after watching your in-depth video, but like you said “buy it nice or buy it twice,” and felt like I was doing myself a disservice by not fully examining all of my choices. I’ve eliminated most of Sony’s other lineups, like the A6600 & A7II in favor of the A7III, but I currently own a Canon 7D and will be focusing in content creation (KZbin video, vlogging, and even streaming), and the A7III seems to hit all of those points. But, I received my minor in photography and want to get back into that as well. This future camera is going to be used for just about everything. I haven’t fully invested myself in Canon glass as I only have the 28-135mm kit lens and 50mm 1.4. But my question is how bad the drop off of having stabilization versus not having the stabilization for video? I like the Canon EOS R flip screen and the 30 megapixel sensor, but I feel like maybe the Sony has more features with great Low light ISO, image stabilization, facial and eye tracking that will serve what I’m doing more. Tell me what to do?! Haha
@TechGearTalk4 жыл бұрын
It's a touch choice for sure. What did you eliminate the a6600? For what you described, it's an awesome option and will allow you to use these sigma lenses: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4C1hWSam8qGZq8 (for e-mount of course)

If this is a comparison between Canon and Nikon, photography fanatics will already know which one to choose without watching the video till the end. Lol. Sony comes to my mind when I think of audio visual electronics. And I always remember my first love phone camera back in 2005, best phone camera of the year: Sony Ericsson Cybershot. This, my friend, will be one of my strong reasons to go for Sony a7iii. Lol, but seriously, been thinking hard about this for weeks. Thank you for this video and the comments, guess I'll have more weeks of hard thinking. I do weddings using 5dmii and iii. My weak hands have decided to go for mirrorless cameras since last year, and Sony seems to be the best choice of all. But then this EOS R came along, my weak brain now go for it's simple operation, especially that I get used to using Canon for years. But, I have split with my photography partner who took all the gears lately, so that's it, for all the emotional reasons, I think I'll go for Sony! ✌😭

There's so many things pointing at Sony, however in all side by sides I've seen. Still, I prefer the look of EOS R video and stills. The Sony looks pasty a lot of the time, and skin tones not super flattering when graded. But I can be wrong...

@thomasfransson5 жыл бұрын
@mKey even after grading. But I've seen great examples too. Just not as often. Perhaps it's also to do with the s-log not holding up as well as c-log? From what I remember Sony is 100mbps VS canon at 480mbps. Then again, it comes down to what it will be used for and personal preference. I'm just doing youtube videos that mostly will be watched on smartphones. Then again, the R is not as future proofed and more expensive, and you will need that adapter if you already have canon glass or want to buy used glass. While Sony glass is expensive too. Let me know what you pick. I'm in the same spot 😕

As an owner of both and having the a7iii for a year, I can say that skin tones are very hard to bring back to a pleasing look. in white light, it’s difficult to get pleading skin tones without doing a lot of work. With the EOS R, you can literally add contrast and a tiny bit of saturation and the skin tone almost doesn’t need to be touched.

A very nice review as always. You failed to mention some points and had some small errors here and there but no biggie. I "upgraded" some months ago to a new camera and took for testing over a 3 day period the Sony A7III, Nikon Z6, Canon Eos R and later Fuji XT3 (I think it's called) to decide wich one to buy (alnog with 2 friends both also long time photographers). I found the IQ on the R and Z6 to be much better (especially with people, clothing and contrast) compared to the A7III, I found that I can focus and take sharp pictures with the R almost in complete darkness (that really amazed me, never came across such capability on any camera), the high ISO performance on the A7III is better then the others however I never shoot at such high Isos that any camera can't keep up.Also don't see a point to recover dynamic range over 3 points (these cameras all have 5 +). I found the video quality on the R (and also Z6) to be far more superior to that of the A7III , that wasn't a surprise since it has 3 times the bitrate in 1080 and 5 times the bitrate in 4K, 1:1 speedcrop, dof,fov etc etc. But aside from the technical facts I mentioned my 2 main problems with all current Sony cameras is the ridiculous menu (it is horrendous no matter what anyone says or how big his hair is) and the ridiculous 2002 "touch" screen, instead of the animal eye focus (glad it works for you) gimmick they should invest the effort in those 2 areas and in the increase of their video output quality and the IBIS (that thing is there but it doesn't do anything...). Don't get me wrong all the cameras I mentioned are all very good and anyone owning any will be highly pleased (both pros and amateurs) but, Out of all the cameras I shot with llately, in opposite to youtube channels belief, I find the R to be the best mirrorless camera in it's range (I'll put the Z6 in second, A7III third and XT3(if I may) after that),the only thing it's missing is the speed (120fps in 1080 can also be nice and the stupid touchbar is poorly implemented). I find that very impressive since it's Canons first full frame camera, it will be interesting to see what mirrorless high MP and sports cameras they will release next (if they release them).
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input! I have not used the Z6 yes, but the X-T3 was probably my favorite camera of last year (although it's not FF for those who want that). Canon color out of the camera is spectacular. Sony menu is so confusing - no question. And what's funny is that Sony just needs to add a fully articulating full touch screen . Just do it, there is no R&D needed, it's already been created. I know animal AF is a super specific feature - but I really like it. The IBIS does help, especially for video but not in a way that means I don't need a gimbal. I honestly have no idea what the EOS R was dumped on so much. I think it's mostly people comparing specs rather than actually using the camera. Did you shoot video with the Z6? How was the AF?
@arthurmermelshtein17675 жыл бұрын
@@TechGearTalk I did, AF was one of the reasons I didn't buy it (one of my friends after that session bought the Z7 blindly) , however, yes it's not as great as Canons dpaf or Sony's AF but it is good , much better then Olympus,Panasonic (that ain't saying much) or Fuji. I think you'll really enjoy the Z6 both as a photographer and a video guy. P.S - it also has IBIS , a working one 😀, not the Olympus amazing one but still good.

Want to do travel videos/photography with some ability to do B roll and slow mo footage. I don't care too much about 4k but I know I'll have to go 720p on the EOS R for 120fps. I know everyone says the Canon colors are better but the Sony doesn't look too bad either (not sure how much more color grading work I'll have to do). Which lens family is superior between Canon vs Sony? Should I just go A7iii and have it all or get EOS R and start collecting good Canon lenses and hope for a 120fps 1080p mirrorless Canon to upgrade in the future?

Thank you so much for the kind words and support 🙏 I like where your head is at. Personally I prefer the EOS R because of the overall user experience. My a7iii gets me great results as well, but I do more work in post. I like that I can take EOS R footage shot on standard and use it rightaway. It doesn't mean that there aren't people who do the same with the a7iii. 120 was the only reason I went with the a7iii, I was done waiting for Canon. However, you can get an a6400 and use it for slow motion and save a lot of money. Either way, you thought process of investing in lenses is the right approach. For what it's worth, for a beginner, I tend to recommend Canon.

All I want is make pictures of landscape, portrait, and sometimes dance show, or concert. Do you think I'd better sell all my Canon stuff and buy the A7iii with 2 or 3 lenses, or do you think I'd better continue with Canon, given the lenses I already have? Hi Melissa - thank you for the kind words. Some advice: First, don't worry about battery life - if you're shooting photos, both give you plenty - and you should always have at least 1 extra battery if not 2 (you can't afford for something to go wrong). Low, light is a concern, I would make sure that you're using fast lenses. Quiet shutter - use electronic shutter. Confined spaces - wide angle lens. Hope this helps.

first let me say that i very much appreciate your review. due to just having one card slot i can say that i’m backing up my pictures with canons app directly to an ipad. so in the case that something went wrong ill have at least the jpgs saved. which is by far better than having nothing left. a positive effect of this method is, that clients can quickly choose their favorite pictures while or after the shoot … besides this i change the sd cards as often i can while the shoot to prevent card failures. im not sure if this a comparison but i was shootings flash cards for over ten years with the 5dmk2 and never had any issues …

I really like that strategy - immediate backup. Does it hurt your battery life?

I have asked you a few questions which you answered perfectly. I have one final question (hopefully) If I purchase a Cannon RP ( You suggested I give it a look - Thanks), can I use EF-S lenses if I use the EF adapter? My thought is that I should be fine being I am creating more space between the lense and the sensor. Also, if I am correct, will there be any crop factor for photos and video? or will will be like a full frame camera? Thanks again!!!
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob. Yes, you can use EF-S lenses but you can only shoot video in 4k or 720 (NOT in 1080p). For photos, there will be a crop and you'll get a lower resolution. Hope this helps you make a decision.

Getting into my first full frame from a cropped Fujifilm XT3. These are the two I’ve narrowed down. Mostly portraits and product photography. Do you think Canon will progress and catch up to Sony or is the lead to far ahead. Reason I say this is because the canon glass is really enticing but the body, Sony seems to have everything I need except ergonomics. If I go the canon route I can always upgrade the body, but how long will the eos r be a viable option until they fix what they got wrong? What option would you take in my shoes?
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, thank you for sharing your thoughts here. Quick question - why are you upgrading from the X-T3?
@stephenl42665 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! Flexibility with low light, AF performance, more detail, iso capabilities. Overall I feel it’s a better all-around decision. I purchased the XT3 for product photography where I’m basically in one setting, the crop sensor didn’t matter but when I started shooting portraits, I saw limitations especially shooting with other photographers on full frame. bad case of FOMO?
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын
Look, there are no wrong choices here - these are 3 fantastic cameras. The X-T3 might be my favorite camera ever if I'm looking for 1 camera for both photography and video. Sounds like you're only doing photography. I very rarely run into meaningful low light situations kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2PLpGt4hLmLmJY so I don't tend to over-value that (relatively speaking of course). In terms of FOMO, it's a matter of what these limitations are (and are they real or perceived). But go to a store and shoot with both and see if you're happier with the results. Thoughts?

@@stephenl4266 I have an XT3 with the 23, 35, 56 and 90 lenses and the EOS R with the EF 35, and RF 85. I shoot portraits/fashion/couples. The IQ coming off the EOS R is better especially when pixel peeping but it's negligible in real world use. If you're printing, the differences are even less noticeable. You get shallower depth of field with the EOS R but most paying clients can't tell the difference - especially if the work is mostly being shared through digital mediums like social media. When do I choose the canon over the fuji? When I know I need better low light performance. Otherwise, I prefer the XT3 - especially if I'm out shooting multiple outfits and locations. If I could only have one system, I'd choose Fujifilm due to the cost to performance ratio.

Im stuck between these two cameras right now. I don't have any prior lenses for either system. Used to have a nikon dslr but sold it and decided to change systems. I hardly do any filming, just photography. Im not a complete beginner, but still got a lot to learn. I photograph only for me personaly; our pets a lot, children, some landscape and want to start doing some street photography. Maybe, depending on which direction life takes, i would want to do pro photography. What speaks to me with the canon is the canon colors (looks a lot better and that has big weight for me), the more ergonomic body, the backscreen. Im not loving that the rf lenses are so expensive, and that they are so restrictive against other brand making rf lenses. Of course there are adapters for ef and maybe they will open up for more brands. Really love sigma art lenses. With the sony, they have so many lenses from different brands to choose from which is good, eye AF for pets, two card slots (i have never needed it though), longer batterylife. On the negative side, i dont like their backscreen and it seems less comfortable to use. Their colors are less pleasing to look at. I havent really done any editing of raw yet but I hope to learn. I think im leaning more towards the canon.. which camera is best for the photography i want to do and the best camera/system for me to grow with?

To me, 120fps would be the main differentiation. Yes, of course there are other differences. For the casual (and I'm using this loosely because both of these can output professional results) use I would recommend the eos R because I think it's easier and more intuitive to use. I don't think you'll think about the 1080p quality regardless of which of these you got, because it's splitting hairs at that point. If slowing down 60 -> 30 or 24 (not sure what you like better) is good enough - EOS R. If 120 is a must, a7iii (knowing you're giving up a fully articulating touchscreen. Hope this was helpful.

I have never had a problem with any cards I have used. I am 43 now, have been photographing since I was 8 years old, and saw all the changes in the industry. Film, digital, one card, two cards... Never lost shots because of just one "slot" for film! Never even thought about losing pictures because of just one card slot. It doesn't make sense. Best - honest - on point comparison I have seen (I have watched many). Well done! I own both cameras and I find the focus (even with current firmware) quicker and almost always accurate on the Sony. The Canon eye focus is inconsistent at best. I much prefer the user interface on the Canon. With that said, once I have my Sony set up, it just goes. I agree 100% that the Canon is much nicer on the hands. When you nail everything just right, the IQ is extremely close. I like the colors on the canon better, but IQ on the Sony.
