UPDATE: Hello again, and some of you have commented about A7iii's AF tracking results and settings and after doing some additional testing, the Sony does seem to perform better than shown in the video. In the video, I was using Sony FE 35mm f1.8 lens, in AF-C, lock-on AF: Expand Flexible Spot mode with face priority off, and I was using the AEL button as my dedicated eye AF button. Maybe I'm not remembering the settings correctly since this was a few weeks ago, but I can't seem to recreate the same results with any settings. But the good news is, the camera performs better now. Some suggested that for the eye AF to work properly on A7iii, I need to set my focus area to "wide" instead of spot, but after doing more tests, I found this to be not true. When I'm using back button eye AF, it doesn't really seem to matter what focusing mode I'm in. Either way, this isn't how most people would normally shoot portraits and it did not affect the outcome of my review. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have here. Thanks

Thanks a lot for your honest review and Hyun and for being to the point. I've always been fascinated by photography and took a photography class .I want to be start taking serious photos and maybe have it as a side job but mainly for passion. I want to do a documentary film too where I have to constantly take videos. I'll have videos of nature , babies and I'll do many of them while I'm walking. but honestly I don't know which one is better. I wish there was a camera that combines the best features of both of them . I love about cannon it's ergonomics, the plenty of lens it has and I like about sony its video slow motion, stabilization and AF. But I'm a new user of both and I really want to take advantage of black Friday deals. Which one do you recommend? Or is there a third cheaper camera close to them that you think is good? Thanks a lot 🌷

I have the M50 and i got my gf the A6400. Sony is more complicated. I was also tryinng to get the AF focus to work and it’s not that intuitive. If I didn;t have Canon glass already and if I didn’t buy my gf the A6000 + sony glass a few years back, I probably would’ve gotten the Sony for myself and the simpler Canon for her. Trying to set her custom menu options and settings to make it as easy for her as possible is not easy to figure out.

Just an FYI, for best eye AF results in the Sony, you'll need to change your focus to a zone, not a single flexible point. After shooting Canon for years I had to adapt to shooting with the Sony. Best settings: Face detection OFF, set a dedicated eye AF button, continuous AF, use wide/zone or center focus point. I've been testing the Canon R myself and I haven't been as impressed with what I shoot professionally (events in the dark). So...everyone's experience differs. Thanks!

Great review! With the release of the RF 70-200 f2.8, the price gap at 15:06 becomes narrower ($10,500 vs $11,150). I still like the RF glass quality better, and the ring is a great and smart feature that adds to the already better usability by Canon. Canon has simply been nailing it with the RF lenses. I do think that the Sony has better video features, dynamic range, and having a higher burst makes it more apt for more kinds of photography. However, at $1,500 that the EOS R sells for right now (even cheaper if you are lucky, and with EF adapter included) and the RF lenses, I am sticking with Canon, especially since it has better 1080p video and the 4.2.2 4k30 external. I thought about switching to Sony for a long time but I like what Canon has been doing in the mirrorless field. They may have taken their time to catch up but they have been taking big strides with lens and firmware releases and the release of the m6 mkii, which has no crop at 4k. I really look forward to the newer model of the R.

The Eos R was very heavily criticised when it was released and the Sony bois had a field day, now that everyone is coming out with a 1 year on video for the Eos R peoples opinions are very different and much more positive. Anyone who's used the Eos R for more than an hour knows how damn good it feels in the hand and with the most recent firmware's autofocus performance is just about on par with Sony. Yeah the Eos R isnt without its flaws, I can see why wedding photogs crave a second card slot and the 4k video crop is a big challenge for film guys, but the rest of us who dont take photos/videos for a living, it's a pretty solid camera. Then there's the lenses. Man they good. 28-70 f2 is unmatched by anyone, the 50 and 85 f/1.2 are about as good as you can make them, the new 70-200 2.8 being the size of a coke can at its shortest is crazy. The Sony's are better on paper and they should be as they have a 6 year head start in the mirrorless game. Anyone who remembers the first gen of A7's will attest to how dreadful they actually were. Autofocus sucked and was bettered by mid range DSLR's, burst modes were middling at best with meager buffers, the A7R had some of the worst shutter slap in a camera ever, a terrible lens lineup unless you were into owning 4 or 5 different 50mm lenses and the ergonomics were straight up bad. Now look at them, class leading autofocus, really good DR and ISO performance, a really fleshed out lens lineup and video specs so good it's completely eaten into their pro video cameras. Sony are deserved number 1 in the mirrorless space but they had to work hard to get there and if that means Canikon need to pull their fingers out with new cameras that's only good for the consumer at the end of the day.

i wouldnt call the first alphas bad nor i would say that their lenses were crap... i mean their 50's you mentioned (55 1.8 and later the 50 1.4 planar... and much much later the cheap one 50 1.8) are still unmatched... i mean the 55 1.8 is stellar and just this lens was the reason for me to switch the system... i mean i shot with with almost everything... and the small 55 1.8 was literally a baby otus with AF (okay lets forget about the CA's at 1.8) ... and the 7R ... had a loud shutter.. but i liked it :) and it had no vibrations or shaky images because of that.... but everything else you say is true... canon must spend about 2 billion dollar to recreate sony's stacked sensor design... and i dont think that they will invest that much ... what i see here is a pattern... canon tries as usual to do their marketing thing... i've heard from a lot of photographers that they receive money to make statements about how good canon actually is... (im not talking about this channel... but there is one famous guy who changed his mind literally overnight ;) and left almost all his groups where built up his audience with sony gear review... strange right? ) we will see what will happen next... im looking forward to see the tech war... but the only real competitor atm is panasonic... they've the power of innovations to make sony a hard time... canikon can just survive with their old-gen fanboy fanbase who investet a lot of money in the one or other system (i've been one of them and i know exactly how hard it is to give up the brand loyality)
@GorillaSnapper4 жыл бұрын
They were bad compared to other similarly priced cameras, especially in autofocus performance. The first announced FE lenses had many holes in their focal range and sure the 55 1.8 was/is a great lens, it took Sony years to get to where they are with their G Master line. The first F4 Zeiss zooms were pretty middling. Sony pushed the metabones adaptors pretty hard because the lenses on launch were lacking and it was how they could start converting people. It was really clever from them. The A7R absolutely had shutter shock issues, it was well documented and a simple Google search of 'A7R shutter shock' shows just how prevalent it was. We might just see a situation where Canon ends up having sensors supplied by Sony. If they wish to stay competitive in a drastically shrinking sector it may be their future. The RF mount is clearly their future and native EF to RF adaptation which works flawlessly fills in the gaps for niche lenses until native RF lenses arrive. Assuming it all doesn't go pear shaped before they get to 2nd or 3rd gen RF bodies.

@@GorillaSnapper Nope, had the camera... and it is well documented on youtube... there is no shutter shock... tested it on my own and there is NO SHUTTER SHOCK... maybe some paid canon "influencers" wanted to make it a real thing, but fortunatley it wasnt. it was a loud shutter, yes... but it was more durable than anything canon had to offer in that price range. however the 24-70f4 wasnt a great lens at all... i agree with you. but this was the only one which was mediocore. look at the 16-35f4 which is still sharper than the 16-35 2.8 III L from canon... i mean... srsly canon? the 70-200 f4 is rated as one of the sharpest zoom lenses ever made... so what we are talking about... the lag of fast professional zooms... sure this was at the beginning when sony didnt even want to release the full frame E-Mount system. but their lenses with Zeiss and Minolta knowhow were better sharper and lighter than the ones from the competitors... no doubt about that. 55 1.8 90 2.8 35 1.4 just to name a few... but i know what you want to say... and there is no doubt about that that canon is just at the beginning... but sony did not put that much money into their system to lose the game... they've been #1 in Digital photography... they're #1 again. :)

Canon is going to wipe the floor with Sony. Sony cameras are missing the soul of a photographer. There are so many things that are not photographer friendly like why would they low level format the memory card? With Canon, if you format your card by accident and want to recover your photos, you can... with Sony, forget it. Canon's smart, they have the best mirrorless glass in the industry with Nikon and Sony lost in the wind regarding their glass. Canon will release awesome mirrorless bodies over the next 5 years and as Sony users try Canon, they will feel like they are using a camera again and not a toy from Sony.

@@allandresner As a photographer for more than 40 years, 30+ of them on staff for publications or private industry (as well as creatively of course), I can't even fathom what a camera "missing the soul of a photographer" even means. Nor can I relate at all to talk of how a camera company is "going to wipe the floor" with another camera company. As for Sony cameras feeling like "toys" I do remember as a real young buck encountering a few of the last of the hard-bitten, colorful old-timers on Chicago newspapers who had all retired by then. In their heyday, they wielded the standard Speed Graphic press cameras and dismissed the 35mm Leicas and Nikon F models as "toys."

I agree, but in case a Ferrari model has better specs than Lamborgoni model (120fps at 1080p), but Lamborgini is still more expensive it's worth taking a look into it. For example I would be more than happy with just full frame 4K and 60fps at 4K from Canon (I mean phones offer 4K at 60fps!) and I have everything I need in a camera. But nooo, Canon presented a camera with worse specs than competitors and priced it higher...I mean, there's a point at which you have to get humble and realize competitors are crushing you and stop raising prices just because of the name. Canon will loose (and has lost) a lot of its customers if they keep offering the same or worse product at the higher price. All I want is to futureproof my videos so I don't have to buy a new camera every few years (I own original 7D...still brilliabt for photos but the video is so dated it's unwatchable for example)....

One thing I really like about the Sony full frame cameras is the fact that there are three dials, which can each be tuned to whatever the user wants. When I shoot Canon I feel changing my settings, especially ISO is slower because pressing the ISO button to then change the ISO is so much slower than just turning another dial on the camera.
@HyunRalphJeong4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can see that. I've been using the back dial on the A7iii as my ISO dial as well. But I still set it up so I have to press the button to activate it because I didn't want to turn it accidentally. On RF mount lenses I can set up the control ring as my ISO/aperture dial too.

Hyun Ralph Jeong Mark my words, by next year, you’ll still learn some quirks about the camera. Most folks that switch from canon don’t even know about focus hold. Many don’t know about the secondary Fn menu, or issues about EFCS. It’s an extremely deep learning curve, and due to the stacked sensor, and real-time AF, the A9 is easier to use. The picture profiles settings are deep..... Bluetooth remote is amazing and so on. I’ve shoot canon for a decade actively, still have the M and waiting for the R pro, don’t want a single card For my “A” camera, and willing to go cross brands, would love to see the R pro or Panasonic S1H. If either has an actual lens lineup I would have gone for one over the holiday sales, instead, in bagholding my dollars.

Guy With Camera I’ve been actually using the focus hold button. I thought I’d never use it but it’s useful because I use back button focus on the Canon but I don’t like the placement of the button on the Sony and I use the AEL button as eye AF. I don’t like using electronic shutter in general with any cameras unless I have to be silent because of the issues. I don’t use picture profiles because I don’t shoot jpeg. The way I use my cameras is pretty simple which is probably why the Sony’s menu didn’t bother me that much.

@@HyunRalphJeong the AEL button is horrible, and you really dont need an eye AF button for sony, it has auto eye AF. if it's a single person, use wide area and regular AF. if you're isolating between multiple people, use medium or large spot, avoid the small. You need to switch the Metabones to Advanced Mode (hold button while mounting lens) to get video AF. A more recent FW update enables full Hybrid AF (OSPDAF + CDAF), where Green Mode (default) only uses OSPDAF. Older Advanced Mode is CDAF only, but still works well in video. Explains why video mode has issues with AF in your video, as CDAF is a big part of Sony's video AF portion.

Question: is it Sony Alpha or Sony A? Not particularly important, but curious when a japanese company uses a greek letter, would it be just for styling "a" or actually be α? When you mention Canon colors, I find that I often try to figure out how to affect the color before taking the shot on 250D. To me it almost always lacks some vibrance compared to real life, that I struggle to bring out the colors I am so enamoured by in real life. It definitely requires something like landscape setting regularly. However in this comparison the dark hallway with torch I can see what people might mean. They look like completely different pictures. One is amber, one is green. I couldn't excuse or explain that. After watching this I'm rather happy with looking into Canon range and deciding to just ignore others (limited time and brain capacity to explore all info on multiple manufacturer ranges and figuring out what's important). The years of leading the market in popularity and catering to your casual users, the way how fluid the use is on Canon is delightful. Even if you sacrificed a couple of better specs for the same money, the most important thing is how effortless the use is. After all you want to focus on shooting and expressing/capturing your creativity and getting work done, you don't want to work the camera but the content. With Sony you can get great things done and its very good in many ways by your witness, but it seems like you often come to moments where you start working with the camera and become alerted to its existence as one puzzle more than extension of your arm and eye. Professionals can get the job done and might not care that much after the learning period and lot of experience on their chosen tool, but even they must appreciate the ease of workflow when you don't have to think about the camera. That's a huge benefit from the experiences on the casual market, to make you not think about the camera too much in your workflow.

Appreciate the review and the content. Also appreciate not getting into the overly done color debate between Canon vs Sony when everyone edits photos anyway. But I would like to say that the one bad thing about a lot of these reviews especially on the Sony and Fuji side are that reviewers are prematurely doing reviews without actually learning how to use the whole product. I’ve seen too many videos where wrong information or inaccurate testing is being done because the user doesn’t know the features of product. One is the auto focus. Looks like you added a comment about figuring out a better setting for Eye-AF. But clearly Sony is the best in Eye-AF. Although Canon’s update is much better than introduced. You also mentioned complaining about one of the dual card slots being a USH-1 and slows the camera down. I’ve done events, wedding, and sports with the A7iii and never had a buffer issue doing redundancy to both. If you run this buffer out and lock out your camera, you are probably over shooting. Also, would rather have this setup than the only 1 card that the EOS R has. Your example of not remembering where AWB setting is simply you not knowing how to use your camera. There are tons of places you can customize the camera to your liking. Bottom line is, you are use to Canon cameras period. It will take a lot of time to get use to another camera of really any brand let alone about a months time and then try and do a review on it. YMMV

Every camera has its strengths and weaknesses but for me personally, canon doesn't seem to be the right fit for me . The first is the lens system, canon rf is currently a closed lens system, the L glass is too expensive for me, and if using the EF lens through the mount, there are often errors, and it is not stable. Sony E mount with many 3rd lenses such as sigma, tamron, samyang, viltrox, ... very good quality and price. The second thing is that I feel sony is faster in focusing, has more focus mode options, as well as when reviewing photos after shooting, the image immediately appears unlike the canon, which takes 1-2 seconds. The third thing is that 2 card slots will help me feel more secure, especially wedding jobs. There is only 1 thing that I want a73 to have from canon R is the screen, the screen of canon R is too good.

Great video! I always used canon cameras... went from compact powershot cameras to a 600D, from that to an 80D and now I have the EOS R... I see no reason to move away from canon... I won't say other brands like nikon, sony, pentax or fujifilm are bad, I'm sure they aren't... but I feel comfortable with my canon gear and isn't that what making pictures is all about?

Good review. Helped a lot. I am going to buy myself the Canon 90D, as I've also compared a lot of other videos and searched for the Sony A7 III. I do mostly videos, but I also want to shoot photos, so in this case I do believe that the Canon will suit me best... Despite it being also a bit cheaper than the A7 iii it has much of if not the same as Sony. Thing that Sony beats Canon in atm. Is shooting in low light... but that is fixable with a few lights or a flash.

It's hard to give up Canon's ergonomics and video autofocus. 90D would be a great hybrid camera
@andreasbuder44174 жыл бұрын
In low light, it is not as clear. In Single AF, the Canon is as good as it gets, with a much lower EV and rapid, confident focus. The Sony is more proficient with continuous in low light, but not as nearly as consistent as the Single AF of the Canon. So, depending on how you shoot, one camera is better than the other and vice versa. It acually amazes me, how close these two cameras have gotten. Now, you can make your decision depending on your needs and are not bound to one brand, because the other suck.

The reason there being that the device really doesn't care about the source as long as it gets it's juice. I might have missed it, but what lens did you use to test the a7iii with? The Sony menu can get confusing but once I customized my buttons, I rarely, if ever have to go into the menu. Sony’s in body image stabilization, though isn’t as good as Panasonic and Nikon, is still extremely useful. I find myself hand holding a lot on wedding days. I don’t think the slower uhs i card of the a7iii is the bottle neck as I don’t think it works that way. There are a couple of KZbin videos demonstrating this.
@HyunRalphJeong4 жыл бұрын
Hello, I used the FE 35 1.8 and 24-105 f4. I saw Dan Watson’s video about the card slot speeds and I tested them too, and when I’m using both slots (uhs-ii for slot 1 and i for slot 2), the speed is pretty much identical to when I use uhs-i cards for both slots. And when I just use 1 uhs-ii card in slot 1, the buffer cleara much faster.

@CheeseOnEverything4 жыл бұрын
You hit the nail on the head there with the 2 clicks comment. That is kinda why Sony is lagging behind as far as form factor. Canon has made the eos R with all of its functions at the user's fingertips, there are no menus to fiddle around with anymore. I'm using the control ring adapter with all my ef lenses and the touch bar customized as Kelvin white balance adjustment. All that together means I dont ever have to take my eye off the evf or viewfinder and can focus on shooting and get much better photos. Iso on the ring, shutter speed on index, thumb on aperture set to the mode dial and wb on the touch bar makes for the fastest adjustment on any camera to date.

The Sony is super slow on playback of pix and if you zoom 1 to 1, its slow as well. Canon is almost instant. Sony even after years you get used to the menus by having to go through all to hunt down a feature. Sometimes you setup and dont use something for a while and good luck finding it. It might not be long as you play around, but with a client waiting, its a pain. And if buffer full, take a break until it clears. I like the Sony files due to no AA filter and large size 42mp, but the Canon files are certainly excellent as well But for work the files mean little. For me I am comparing A7R2 vs 5D3. But once you hold the 2 and try the build quality, the way it shoots and you can work with it, and the ergo,...I would grab the Canon 10 out of 10 times. I have both and use the canon in field more, and use the Sony in studio for slower jobs. Great video, and valid points!

But to talk about investing into each camera system. Canon is always more careful about that parts they're putting into the new camera bodies, its like they have the 120 MP sensor, but refuses to use it because they don't believe it will "fit" with the current technology like processing chips, etc; which on the contrary for Sony, is something they would do, and thats why they had 9 different A7 in the past 7 years. So for Canon whos trying to pump out professional lens that lasts longer, especially with the advantage of their RF holy trinity, it is the right move for the long run. And considering how fast manufacturers are at updating their cameras these days, how soon will canon have the next pro mirrorless camera, particularly with the new 1DX Mark iii's spec?
@callmedeno4 жыл бұрын
One thing I don't get about dynamic range comparisons are why it's always compared in post. If one camera has better dynamic range than another, I would want to able to see that when composing my images in the EVF or lcd screen so I can make decisions. But it seems most similar cameras (like here) have virtually the same dynamic range when composing in camera but one will be able to bring underexposed shadows up more in post. Do you ever see much a dynamic range difference in-camera without editing between products like this (or even a canon m50)?

I don't agree with lens cost. I'd swap out 2 GMs for equivalent Tamron's offerings. Sony has a lot more affordable third party options from Sigma and Tamron whereas Canon RF is more isolated. Plus you can use E mount lenses on all Sony bodies whereas in Canon you'll end up stuck in one of their three mounts.
