Thanks Gordon!. Great preview. As far as I can tell this update addresses pretty much every complaint I've had with my R5 over the last four years. That being said, I'd feel a little odd giving up my R5 at this point. Nothing is perfect, the R5 is still a great camera and despite 4 years of steady use it shows almost no sign of wear. In fact, it performs far better today with current firmware than it did when I bought it. Great release but thankfully I'm not feeling any pressure to be an early adopter. The key to thriving in Canon's system is buying mid-cycle. For those that are in the market, It seems like a superb release. As it should be at that price.

The EOS 3 film camera was my first autofocus camera, and I learned to use the eye-controlled focus well, even with glasses. It worked better in some situations than others, so you learned not to use it in some settings. Because it was my first AF camera, and I got used to AF working that way, I have always missed it. I did buy the R5 last year and thought that it would be my last camera (in my late 60's) UNLESS they came out with a version that had eye-controlled focus. Well... let's say I was among the first to pre-order the R5 MK II. And to have increased dynamic range along with it, and improved AF generally. I was more than content with the R5 and large prints from it (on a Canon Pro-2600). I am really looking forward the the MK II.

Though many were unfortunate enough to have to deal with the poorly designed hot shoe on the R5, that big design flaw is rarely mentioned if not searching specifically for it. It’s certainly never mentioned in reviews. I shoot video and take photos and many times I need to use on camera flash. Thankfully I had paid for extra coverage and was able to send my camera in for the quick repair, but others spent hundreds of dollars to get theirs fixed when it shouldn’t have been a problem in ten first place. I hope and assume that the updated hot shoe isn’t screwed into place from the inside of the camera this time! If you’re unaware, many of us dealt with the flash becoming loose in the shoe and not making proper contact. In the middle of an all-day shoot I discovered I had to use one hand to push the flash forward when taking photos so as to have proper contact. Thanks for the great review! I finally subscribed.

Thanks! No, I'd no idea about that issue, so thanks for mentioning it. I'll take a closer look at the shoe in my final review.
@JohnAMorris4 ай бұрын
@@cameralabs I was also wondering if they addressed the hot shoe issue. I agree with @livemusic that you have to specifically search for this issue on the R5/6 or you don't hear much about it. That makes it hard to tell how wide spread the issue is but, for most it seems like the screws eventually just back out and the mount gets loose. Unfortunately, you have to take the camera apart to tighten them back up.

On paper looks like a good progression. I would've said that feature wise, it's a nice evolution. In practice, where I am, Canon wants 23% more money for it than for the R5 - that is a substantial price difference! Also I do not understand the presence of jpeg upscaling instead of pixel shifting of raw images in this model. Hi-res camera is bought for high resolution image sensor with the intention of pixel peeping every pixel shift - not a mobile phone jpeg computation. In R1 this feature had somewhat more validity where everything is about speed of transfer to the press. But here??

Awesome review (pre-production). Re: Batteries -I had an annoying exchange of comments on another thread that somebody posted on Facebook about third-party batteries versus Canon. I have always said that the OEM batteries from Canon outperformed any other brand that I had tried and I had tried 2 other third-party brands. They were failures… I shoot Airshows so with High-speed jets, I could rip off 4000 shots easily. My batteries still showed 25% left. 🤙

First party always work better in my experience. Plus they're often needed to unlock the full performance in speeds or af. I'm sure there's some deliberate restrictions or blocks, but the bottom line is first party batteries often deliver the best performance.

Great video Gordon. I'm still amazed that after all this time Canon still can't quite match Sony (and Nikon) on read out speeds and frame rates. I get that it beats them in a few categories but the A1 which is many years old at this point still has better readouts. I'm not a Nikon expert but I think the Z9 does too. The R1 is close but it only does it with 24mp. I would have considered switching back if I knew the readouts would not affect me. I can shoot plane propellers and hummingbirds now with no rolling shutter electronically. I don't trust this yet. I'll wait for your full review where I hope you can do some good testing of it. In R5 (Mark 1), if you are in a zone auto focus mode and start to track a subject, once the subject moves out of the zone, it stops tracking it. Does this still happen in the R5 mark II? I think I saw briefly in the clip that you had a center auto focus zone, it focused on the face of a basketball player and kept tracking him once he moved outside of the center zone (and R5II switched to full frame auto focus). If that is the case, that's a huge improvement!
@cameralabs4 ай бұрын
I think once it starts to track with the shutter half or fully pressed, it'll follow across the whole frame. The zone part only seems to affect what subjects are initially recognised BEFORE you half press. At least that's my experience as I recall.

It has all these excellent features, but does it have one of the most simple features that has been found on even cheap cameras from other brands for over a decade (that has been missing from most Canon cameras)? That is, can you keep the horizon level on during recording video? It may seem silly, but this one feature will decide whether I purchase one or not. I know it has some self-leveling IBIS thing, but that isn't what I'm asking. I just want to be able to make the camera level myself, because I can see the level on the screen. Any clue if it can do that?
@cameralabs4 ай бұрын
Do you mean a level indicator so you can adjust how you hold it?
@pinkflamingos694 ай бұрын
@@cameralabs yeah, the tool to keep an eye on your camera being level. Like for me, often times on a monopod it's easy for me to end up holding it a little to the right or left. Having that level lets me notice that and fix it while recording a wedding ceremony, for example.
