People trying to rip Gerald a new one for favourable recommendations to Sony and Panasonic need to see this, he is one of the most honest reviewers out there and dare I say one of the most detailed and methodical, sort of a one stop shop for all that the camera does right or wrong. Canon was behind the competition for a long time but they seem to have caught up. Gerald rewards their efforts by giving this new model his highest recommendation. Pretty honest if you ask me.

I've been using the camera since launch, and have been able to do what I want, when I want. I don't have the battery fan grip, but I will say that some time ago, I filmed a music video entirely in 4K 60 Raw. After about an hour of filming, the camera overheat and shut down in a room that was about 80 degrees F. I turned the switch off then immediately on again, and didn't wait for the camera to cool. I filmed for another half hour before it did it again. I just then shut off and on and was running again. Lol. It's annoying when it happens, but at least I didn't have to wait for the camera before I could film again.

Canon provides cameras to their ambassadors who will give feedback to Canon, but will not emphasize bugs and problems in their "review", the tests Gerald does are just proving their 16+ dynamic range is a marketing trick, there are way too many potential buyers who know very little about dynamic range believe the R5II has 16 stops of usable dynamic range

A solution for piping line level things into mic jacks like this one: Shure A15LA or similar line to mic adapter. This will attenuate by 50dB and match the impedance. I used to use this with a C200 to get line level into channels 3 and 4 via the stereo mic level 3.5mm jack.

I realize crop is a naughty word these days but I would like to see some tests using the crop mode. The benefit of the crop mode is it overheats a lot less, the 4k 60 is oversampled from 5.1k vs line skipped and it likely has a much better rolling shutter since its using a smaller portion of the sensor. Since the R5 has 8k resolution its one of the few fullframe cameras that can do a APSC/s35mm crop and still have over sampling. The R5 ironically is actually a really good s35mm camera. APSC crop is 1.6x vs the typical 1.5x crop of s35mm but a 1.6 crop just happens to be the same as Academy 35mm film. It also has the added benefit of longer reach for those that need that sort of thing. I know some have made really good use of the crop mode on the first R5 to get around overheating and a way to get extra reach. Some have even added 0.71x focal reducers to recover some of that FOV. I always felt it was a good option for those shooting wildlife, wedding or live performance type videos. I sometimes use 5.1k raw from the first R5 to my Ninja V.

I mostly do still photography. I’ve been slowly reading the manual and there are quite a few features that Canon has added. Things I’ve wanted for some time. One is a “Priority” for the card slots. I can remove the CF card and close the door. The camera switches to card 2 but I don’t care. I move the files from the CF card to my computer and then put the CF card back in. The camera now switches back to the CF card. YEA!!! Before, I had to either not close the door while I downloaded the images or set the card back to the CF card manually. It has a lot of versatility in the auto focus. The area of the AF can be adjusted and changed in many different ways. Like all Canon cameras, it has the C1-C3 *modes* which is confusing to me. Now they have added the ability to save the AF settings and give these sets of settings names. This is a huge win I think. I’ve not really exploited it yet but I think that is most of what I’ve been wanting from the C1-C3 modes. The way the C1-C3 modes work just doesn’t fit my brain.

All of these sensor interfaces are written with the ability to start and finish reading the sensor vertically at basically any point. There are just requirements like reading 15 lines at a time, or things like that. It is my guess that the slower/faster readout does not have to do with reading beyond the actual necessary resolution for a given mode. It's possible that we are seeing 14-bit vs. 12-bit readout in the 30 vs 60p modes, and that 12-bit already has as much dynamic range as Clog2 is really capable of dealing with, so we're not seeing a noticeable degradation. There just aren't that many things that effect readout speed. My only other thought is that it has to do with power consumption, so they chose to not read out at the faster speed during normal record modes to save power.
