People trying to rip Gerald a new one for favourable recommendations to Sony and Panasonic need to see this, he is one of the most honest reviewers out there and dare I say one of the most detailed and methodical, sort of a one stop shop for all that the camera does right or wrong. Canon was behind the competition for a long time but they seem to have caught up. Gerald rewards their efforts by giving this new model his highest recommendation. Pretty honest if you ask me.

Mentioning things like the lack of line level in the 3.5 jack are why I watch your reviews. Very few reviewers discuss those things but when actually using the camera for work it can be a major pain that is great to know about ahead of time. I do applaud canon for this camera overall, great features and exposure tools.

I've been using the camera since launch, and have been able to do what I want, when I want. I don't have the battery fan grip, but I will say that some time ago, I filmed a music video entirely in 4K 60 Raw. After about an hour of filming, the camera overheat and shut down in a room that was about 80 degrees F. I turned the switch off then immediately on again, and didn't wait for the camera to cool. I filmed for another half hour before it did it again. I just then shut off and on and was running again. Lol. It's annoying when it happens, but at least I didn't have to wait for the camera before I could film again.

@@Soul_Visuals_Photography Like who? I think Canon doesn't want Gerald to tear them apart so they find others that will just review and give good reviews. Sony on the other hand is unbias and gives it to anyone with a lot of subscribers to prove that their products are top notch. And to give the negative feedbacks for better improvements in the next version.
@xiaotianwan
@xiaotianwan 4 ай бұрын
Canon provides cameras to their ambassadors who will give feedback to Canon, but will not emphasize bugs and problems in their "review", the tests Gerald does are just proving their 16+ dynamic range is a marketing trick, there are way too many potential buyers who know very little about dynamic range believe the R5II has 16 stops of usable dynamic range
@harryvuemedia
@harryvuemedia 4 ай бұрын
@@xiaotianwan The R5-ii is great for anyone who doesn't own the R5. Otherwise, its pointless to upgrade to the r5-ii just for video if you mainly focus on photography. Nikon and Sony both seem to be unbias and gives it to anyone that knows how to review cameras. But I have never seen Gerald Undone released a video on the same date as other people. Rather he always releases it a month after the camera has been released and i cant blame him too. I think Canon has it out for Gerald.

A solution for piping line level things into mic jacks like this one: Shure A15LA or similar line to mic adapter. This will attenuate by 50dB and match the impedance. I used to use this with a C200 to get line level into channels 3 and 4 via the stereo mic level 3.5mm jack.

When making purchases or researching equipment of this caliber, it has become second nature to look for information from you Gerald. Consistently, there are numbers no one talks about, tests no one has the patience for because they want to get onto the next video, and opinions that I know will call out poor design, UX, etc. no matter how good or bad something is. You always find something positive to say about a product and I know it’s genuine because you understand how hard making a product and putting yourself out there actually is. Know that all your work saves me time watching every other video out to see if someone found a quirk that another didn’t. I eagerly await each of your videos and I learn something new from every one of them; even the banana reviews.

I realize crop is a naughty word these days but I would like to see some tests using the crop mode. The benefit of the crop mode is it overheats a lot less, the 4k 60 is oversampled from 5.1k vs line skipped and it likely has a much better rolling shutter since its using a smaller portion of the sensor. Since the R5 has 8k resolution its one of the few fullframe cameras that can do a APSC/s35mm crop and still have over sampling. The R5 ironically is actually a really good s35mm camera. APSC crop is 1.6x vs the typical 1.5x crop of s35mm but a 1.6 crop just happens to be the same as Academy 35mm film. It also has the added benefit of longer reach for those that need that sort of thing. I know some have made really good use of the crop mode on the first R5 to get around overheating and a way to get extra reach. Some have even added 0.71x focal reducers to recover some of that FOV. I always felt it was a good option for those shooting wildlife, wedding or live performance type videos. I sometimes use 5.1k raw from the first R5 to my Ninja V.

I mostly do still photography. I’ve been slowly reading the manual and there are quite a few features that Canon has added. Things I’ve wanted for some time. One is a “Priority” for the card slots. I can remove the CF card and close the door. The camera switches to card 2 but I don’t care. I move the files from the CF card to my computer and then put the CF card back in. The camera now switches back to the CF card. YEA!!! Before, I had to either not close the door while I downloaded the images or set the card back to the CF card manually. It has a lot of versatility in the auto focus. The area of the AF can be adjusted and changed in many different ways. Like all Canon cameras, it has the C1-C3 *modes* which is confusing to me. Now they have added the ability to save the AF settings and give these sets of settings names. This is a huge win I think. I’ve not really exploited it yet but I think that is most of what I’ve been wanting from the C1-C3 modes. The way the C1-C3 modes work just doesn’t fit my brain.

A well-done and thoughtful review of a fine camera. I fully intend to add the R5 Mk II to the R5 and R6 Mk II that I currently use, and probably before the year is out. I need to echo an excellent point made by a commenter on a different review of the R5.2: We get so caught up in the minutia of our cameras - pixel peeping, for example - that sometimes we forget the whole point, which is to take good pictures. Of course it helps to have a good understanding of the various technical strengths and weaknesses of our gear, but please don't forget to go make some art.

We've been looking to upgrade from the GH5 to a FF system for AF/Low-Light and pretty set on the A7sIII... but now the R5 II is looking to make that decision a bit harder.

Same, I hate the AF on the GH5 and the low light is not good. But if you use manual focus and decent light it looks great. But of course the main issue, Canon is 3-4x the price. So are you ok with paying $7k for an R5ii and one lens? I’m not.

The first true hybrid camera from Canon that doesn't have various "cripplehammers" built in. Incredible.

Gerald.. its all about the colors. RAW, Film, Arri, RED, Panavision. Nothing has to do with "quality" but pushing colors 😊

Overheating depends of ISO. What iso do you use in your tests?

All of these sensor interfaces are written with the ability to start and finish reading the sensor vertically at basically any point. There are just requirements like reading 15 lines at a time, or things like that. It is my guess that the slower/faster readout does not have to do with reading beyond the actual necessary resolution for a given mode. It's possible that we are seeing 14-bit vs. 12-bit readout in the 30 vs 60p modes, and that 12-bit already has as much dynamic range as Clog2 is really capable of dealing with, so we're not seeing a noticeable degradation. There just aren't that many things that effect readout speed. My only other thought is that it has to do with power consumption, so they chose to not read out at the faster speed during normal record modes to save power.

Thanks so much for this.. I was particularly worried about the over heating.. but it sounds like if I'm happy with some of the more stock modes then it's not such an issue. Sounds like a great camera.. now need to wait for when we can actually get it again!

@10:58 I cannot see any difference between 24p and 120p which lead me to believe that the difference is due to clock frequency boost that causes rapid increase of heat built-up leading to excessive overheating in a mode that would not be used for long takes anyways.
