Canon Gets hacked, we get a couple of lens announcements around the horizon for Sony E-Mount, the Viltrox 85mm F1.8 Mk 1 can apparently be updated to F1.6, and it seems there's a way to record up to 4 hours of 4kHQ with the Canon EOS R5.

Obviously obviously a hard limit imposed by Canon to avoid cannibalizing cinema camera sales this is totally unacceptable to GIMP the R5 by software. The hackers should have also demanded that canon free the R5 of limitations!!!

always maintained that the recovery times seem bogus and limited by canon and not thermals. think abt it, it does not take 4-6 hours for heat to dissipate out of a camera body. also, several reviewers have tried ice packs and leaf blowers which would logically move heat but even these measures don't effect cooldown times. i'm betting that there is a large software restriction on these cameras

I have a 512GB CFexpress card (Sandisk Extreme Pro) and if I do nothing and just let the card in an usb reader after 5min the card is really hot. I couldn't keep it in my hand and the card was doing nothing (not reading/not writing anything) just idle in the reader. Can someone develop a dummy Cfexpress adapter to external ssd? I think it is possible the 8k raw comes at 2600/8=325MB/sec and Cfexpress uses nvme protocol the same as pci-express ssd.

Its actually the CFexpress card that causes the heat. Try leaving your CFexpress card in a card reader and watch it gets hot.

The new cfast/Compactexpress cards get super hot (people complaining they get almost too hot to hold just by using it in their card readers), go read reviews on websites like BHphoto. Now imagine that same card inside a small weather sealed camera with high bit rate video data being written to it... it really isn't a mystery why external recording doesn't cause as many heating issues. It's because you are removing this source of heat from the camera, and its even better if you have a dummy battery with external power source since batteries throw off some heat too. BUT cfast card is the main culprit here.

So what I’m seeing is that CF Express cards get extremely hot, which I can confirm in both camera and card reader. My card reader gets hot just sitting there. I have a feeling a lot of the overheating comes from a very hot cf express being inside the camera. I hope that’s not the main issue because that would be very hard to fix.

I've mentioned this in the comments of other videos, but it is my belief that this is a deliberate handicap from Canon that will be magically fixed with a firmware update around the time of the Sony A7Siii release in September 2020; in 4k HQ for sure; in 8k with limitations so it doesn't cannibalize their cinema line.

From watching many reviews I think the EOS R5 overheating is based on temperature lock time. for example, if the camera reaches 50c the cooldown time will be 15 to 20. no matter if the camera cools down below the 50c. you still got that 15 to 20 minutes timer cool down. I wonder if you change the time on the camera would that affects cool downtime. This is just an idea nothing I've tested but would like to see it done

the guys at vistek also did a similar video and they basically got the same results. maybe it wouldn't be so bad to pick up the atomos. they're reasonably priced and you can use them as a big monitor. that 4khq mode is money. but now, atomos, put out the 8k...

I’ve said it from the beginning that canon was using software limitations, the camera gets barely warm, even around the sensor, and the 30min rec limitations even after the tax law in Europe has been abolished is a sign of it, they just crippled the R5 to protect once again the Cinema Line! I hope that the release of the a7SIII will push them to remove this limitations otherwise is gonna be Sony to cannibalize their cinema line...

I think canon R6/5 does get warm and all dslr's will over heat but canon might be trying to cover up things to make it seem better as the years go on. The overheating issue is free advertising on canons part not good but its free. Now I think its a software limitation and they will have to address that soon or they meant to cripple the camera and unlock features later making this seam like its getting better over time. Canon added codes and missing features in the cameras like clog 3 and ALL-I for R6. Its not set in stone but I got connects saying canon is thinking about adding Raw recording to the R6 later down the line in a software update or making you pay for it like they did c-log for the 5d4. The only problem with canon is everyone has a different review some people that got the camera it works as represented, and others take over 6h to get the max record time in 8k after it overheated. I would not recommend anyone buy canons new cameras or any "new" camera right away and let the fist few shit batches go out until supply chains open more and quality can become more of a priority.

Image.Canon was down for several days and the icon in my system tray kept saying I wasn't signed in. If I clicked it to sign in, the site was down and displayed some message in Japanese. Then days later there was a message in English above the Japanese message saying some data on their server had been lost, but none of my user information had been stolen. Today it signed in fine and the service is working again.

Back in the days using a dummy on my 7D was eliminating heating of the cam. I seems same goes for the R5 (every battery gets hot during usage). The SD-Card "hack" is interesing and sounds to me like a software/firmware bug. Just wait for the next update which removes it lol :)
