For what I do with a camera I couldn’t have dreamed up a better camera. When I only shot portraits I was happy with my 5Diii but then I started doing KZbin videos and went through the EOS RP and EOS R looking for a camera that could replace my 5D but also accommodate a quick easy video work flow. Both of those cameras lacked hard in ergonomics and flexibility when it came to stills- they were cumbersome and required way too many menu dives, they never reached that “part of my hand” connection that I had with my 5D because they required too many “stop and dig in this menu” moments. Then I borrowed an R5 knowing it would be overkill for my needs and after two days my wife says “hey you’re not cussing at your camera like you have been the last two years 😂” and five minutes later I ordered an R6. After setting it up I can use it blindfolded, it’s SO intuitively designed. Even though the DPAF is way better than on the RP/R it’s still not absolutely perfect but the R5/R6 can use dual back button focus so you can always have your single point ready in an instant. The “recall shooting function” button is also a game changer, if I’m shooting outside I’ll dial in that button to expose for the shade (exposure, white balance, all of it) and dial the main settings in for the sun, or if I’m shooting in my studio I’ll dial it in for the modeling lamps and dial the main settings for my strobes so I can instantly get crisp detailed shots or soft dreamy shots side by side of the same pose without touching a wheel. Actually setting that button to recall auto ISO (my “oh crap the scene is changing faster than I can change settings” button) has negated my need for aperture priority and aside from switching to video I never need to touch the mode dial. Sorry for the novel. Best camera ever. Literally can’t imagine why I’d ever need to upgrade again.

Picked up the R6 this weekend after a full year of shooting on the a6400, A7iii and the A7c. Packed up all my Sony gear and sent it off after a couple of days use as I knew this was the camera for me. I love this camera as I have every other Canon camera that I have owned. The colors straight out of camera are awesome. After not shooting on Canon for a year I was shocked at how easy it was to pick up this camera and everything be second nature, even though my Canon's were DSLR. I have no regrets on my purchase. Right now I have the RF 24-105 f4 but I cannot wait to get my hands on the RF 70-200 2.8....if they come back in stock lol. For someone who spent the last year as a Sony fan boy and following every KZbin opinion on why I should shoot Sony, I am proud to be back on Canon where I plan to stay. Don't underestimate the Adobe Camera Raw "Enhance" ability. I got my hands on raw files from the R5 and R6 taken in natural light, studio portraits and landscapes using the best RF glass. I used Enhance on the R6 files, then output the DNGs to 45 MP and overlayed the images with the R5 files. 9 times out of 10 the R6 image looked better/sharper/more detailed than the R5 file at it's native 45 MP. There is pretty much no situation where I wouldn't be able to print the same size with the R6 and R5. Same goes for cropping. And to add to that, I've had prints put on the side of buses that were taken with an 8 MP 1DMkII long ago and they were amazing.

I hate the R6 for photography! I have the r6 & 1Dx mark2. The R6 is good for video and vintage lenses. What i don’t like: - Evf needs one second to come on. - Battery is always empty because i always forget to power it off while i am on a shoot. When i power it off it needs 5 seconds until you can work with it. - why is liveview always on? I want to use the viewfinder to aim and the display like on dslrs. If you disable live view on the display, you can’t use it to review pictures like on any dslrs. - you need to push two buttons to change the focus points. - no lens tweaks for lens adjustments - too expensive if you can 1dx mark 3 for about 50% more. (R6, ef-adapter and battery grip) If you just make photos, I think a 1d, 5d or 6d dslr is much more effective and convenient.

Great to see your video on this. Back in December last year I bought 2 x R6 bodies, along with the 24-105 f/4, 24-240 and 100-500 RF lenses. The kind of still photography I do (I don't do video) is fairly wide, but given the chance, I do wildlife and scenic images. Still, if Canon were to release a 10-24 f/4, it would give me, in three lenses, a range from 10mm - 500mm and that's impressive! One big factor to which I often refer people looking for gear, is to ask what they are going to produce - to me the end product is the most important focus. There is a big difference between producing images for social media, electronic display and large, but not hi-resolution posters, as opposed to making large prints for Art (with that capital A). I agree about the R6 having an edge over the R5 in DR, and having the cheaper body allowed me to afford dual bodies along with battery grips (very handy for those heavier lenses) - as I have an aversion to changing lenses in the field, especially with MILCs to avoid getting dust in the body. As to the R5 - I see it as more of a hybrid unit: for those who want to do mostly photography with some video. In that respect, I think Canon's marketing department over-emphasized the video aspects of the unit. I think if people want high-resolution video for long periods of time it makes little sense to ask that of a compact body that has deliberately avoided venting to make it environmentally sealed! That is why there are true video cameras out there, although I understand a larger bodied R5C may be in the works for that constituency. For myself, I didn't see the point in investing in a camera with hi-end video and resultant use of the Express CF cards - still photographers just need decent SD cards and all the DR they can get. What I AM hoping for is a replacement for my venerable EOS 7DII, now about 7 years old, so perhaps an EOS R7. For me, the availability of a pro-level crop sensor body would enhance my ability to reach at the long telephoto end at which I operate quite a bit, and should have greater pixel density at a lower price than something like the R5 upscaled. For example, a R7 with a 40MP APS-C sensor would have the equivalent pixel density of a FF 104MP sensor cropped in post to the same FoV as the APS-C equivalent. The other unit I would like to see is a new version of the EOS 5DsR - BIG MP capacity FF sensor for landscape and large, detailed prints. No matter what, I hope they keep the same form factor as for the R6, especially the fully-articulated screen.

@trevor99343 жыл бұрын
@@DG-rm2fn Hi Denis: I was waiting for my RF 24-105 (on back order for 4 months!) and after checking reviews by Justin Abott and Gordon Laing, I bought one. Actually, for an all-in-one lens, it's REALLY good. Now I preface that remark with the comment that a lot depends on what you are going to produce, but if you are not producing and printing large Art images, I think you will be happy. I certainly am and I use it as much as the 24-105 now. One interesting aspect to this lens is the amount of lens correction going on. If one was to disable the in-camera correction and look at the uncorrected results, it would look ridiculously warped at the wide end in particular. As I understand it, the lens at 24 is actually shooting at 21mm and then making lens corrections via firmware that correct the distortions and give a 24mm FoV. This is the first lens that I seen with such extreme manipulation - but it works brilliantly. This may well become a trend in the future to correct a wide range of distortions and aberrations...

Recently got an EOS R and have been struggling with exposure in video when background is bright. It really darkens the center where I need it to be the brightest and exposes for the highlights. I know I can manually set ISO but I need a camera where auto ISO will just work. Does the R6 act that same way as the R? I never had this problem with my Sony a6500. Everything in the focus area was always exposed good and only having this issue after switching to the EOS R. Now deciding between the R6 and Sony A7C but if the R6 acts like the R will definitely need to go with the Sony.

Totally agree though I would include and recommend well experienced professional wedding photographers to buy an R6 as well. I love the 20.1mp file size for my weddings as I shoot between 3-4K images on day (I used to shoot medium raw on my 5D's which was 17mp) Like other photographers with over 20 years experience you tend not crop too much or need to so it's file size is not an issue. This camera's AF is so superior to the 5Dmkvi it's crazy. I can shoot with my Canon 135mm at F2 of a couple coming down the isle and the autofocus has the eye sharp close to 100%.. where the 5D would not have close to that hit rate. RF Glass is stellar too so out went my 2 x 5D's and in came 2 x R6's with some RF glass and 'm a super happy camper!. I would also say though you do not need to buy the RF glass as the R6 works perfectly with older EF glass with the converter, again my Canon 24mm 1.4 EF is much better on the R6 than the 5D. Add over hahahaha.

Brilliant for landscapes and just walking around, which is primarily what I shoot. Sure it was expensive, but I feel I got good value. I'm really interested in the 70-200 f/4 (love the 2.8, but the weight) but I'm going to wait a bit and see if 3rd party glass impacts pricing. BTW, if you could find another superlative besides "super" I think it would really punch up your videos.

Great to see someone doing theatre photography! Do you use the R6 with mechanical or electronic shutter when in the theatre? Have you had any issues with banding with the electronic shutter? I have a 5D3 which I use in the 'silent' mechanical mode which still makes some noise and I'm reaching its limits in low light performance. I'd love to be able to switch to a mirrorless camera and use it in silent mode but I work under LED lighting and am wary of banding.
@TheZachMendez3 жыл бұрын
I use both & yes, sometimes banding is an issue unfortunately. I handle it on a case by case basis. Sometimes the benefits of the silent shutter outweigh any banding concerns. Hopefully the new sensor technology will fix this issue in future cameras. Thanks for watching!

I am pretty sure that the ibis works perfect in EF lenses without having to input the focal length. I had to enter it when I adapt vintage lenses that they don't have any electronics, but both my old Canon EF lenses and my Tamron EF lenses work great with the R6 ibis (even the EF-S lenses) . Anyway, I agree with you, it's a great camera and very enjoyable to use
@TheZachMendez3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching & for the comment! You know, you got me thinking about this. Someone told me that you need to input the focal length of the EF lenses to optimize the IBIS performance but what you're saying makes a lot more sense. This is an option for adapted vintage lenses etc. Also explains why that option disappears when you attach the EF lenses - can't believe I didn't think of this before lol. Can't believe everything you're told I suppose. Thanks so much for your input!
@RamonLinares3 жыл бұрын
@@TheZachMendez yeah, the focal length gets stored in the metadata of the photos so I guess the camera is able to get this information from the lens. I wouldn't be surprised if Canon crippled it somehow to make us buy RF glass, though 😂

I'm in the same "boat". I bought the R6 about a month ago, but the RF 100-500mm lens was not in stock then (and still not). I've got an airshow at months end to attend, but it is looking more and more like the old EF 100-400mm is going to come into play. 😩 At least they had plenty of EF to RF converters in stock. I can recommend the one with the control ring. I find it useful for setting ISO.

I use this camera for all my event capture work paired with the battery grip, the 28-70 f/2 and I couldn’t have asked for a better more reliable camera. I’m having a couple of technical issues tho after 8 months of using it. And I’m guessing it coming from the battery grip where I’ll get error messages that disrupt the shooting and the last set of burst shots I captured did not store in the memory card. I’ll either wait till the camera soft resets or it freezes up and I have to perform a battery pull. Sometimes the battery pull throws off the chip sensor to detect proprietary batteries. It will tell me that my genuine canon batteries are off brand and will lock my cameraa access to the interface. I’ve had to do about 1-4 battery pulls until it goes back to normal. I think it might be an issue more with the battery grip which is also canon brand. It’s not a regular occurrence but when it happens it takes me no longer than a couple minutes to troubleshoot. Other than that I’m happy with it
@TheZachMendez3 жыл бұрын
Really weird - Sorry that's happening! I don't know why. The battery issue is strange. The only issues that I had was with a bad memory card - it was actually the most expensive Lexar professional but the camera wouldn't write to it for some reason. I had the same issue with the Lexar cards on my C70. Now use Sony tough cards and have had no further problems. Thanks for watching!

Very informative and much appreciated. One question: how do you find the R6 video files for editing? I have heard that the IPB files from it are very tough to work with on the computer. Nice video(s)! Thanks for the reviews. I do mainly video work but also some stills and a fair chunk of time lapse. I was fully set on getting an R5 but at the eleventh hour decided to dig a bit deeper into my bank account and got and went for the R6 and C70 combo (I also have a C200). I think I made the right choice! After being a 1DX MkII owner for five years it was so nice to have everything that camera offers (and more!) in a much smaller form factor in the R6. The one downside, I found out out the hard way, is the HDMI out thing. Pretty annoying to be honest but as it’s not my main video camera it’s something I can live with. Overall, a lovely little camera which I think is good value for the money.

Only the fact that Canon intentionally holds back on little but very useful video functionally like Zebras & Peaking at the same time, no Histogramm or White Balance or Af mode change during recording, not All-I or DCI4k etc. sucks! Btw: This new AI feature in Lightroom never adds Detail to your images (how could it?). It basically only uses some computational tricks to increase the details and sharpness perceived by our brain.
