I’ve currently got an M50 and love everything about it. I’ve been making videos for about 2 years and I think the R6 is a really logical step up and will allow me to grow even more. Honestly, the 20MP count is a bit of a dealbreaker for me coming from almost 6 years of using the similarly 20MP 6D. I found my cropping ability in post to be severely limited at that count whereas my EOS R gives me just enough cropping potential to satisfy me. That said though, the IBIS demo looked absurdly good and was maybe my biggest surprise from the whole review. Great work!

The problem with R6 in video, is that it essentially overheats in every 4K mode. The R5 at least gives you no overheat options in regular 4k up to 30p, and in the APSC cropped modes ( which look amazing by the way, as its oversampled 5K footage). So for 4K video, the R5 is simply a much better option due to its flexibility. The overheating thing is very real on both of these camera's, but on the R6 you are totally pigeon holed.

Google "interframe vs intraframe" and check the first image. Basicly, IPB is is interframe, where 5 out of the 6 frames rely on information of the first frame, meaning less data needs to be restored, but editing with it is a bit harder on your computer (doesn't mean you will "feel" the difference while working with it, but it CAN cause a laggy experiance), because the software can't handle each frame individually. ALL-I is intraframe, which means every frame is "stand alone", which costs more bandwith per second, but it's easier on the editing software/your pc.

Great video! With respect to your question about the low-pass filter (AKA anti-aliasing), I think it accounts for a lot of the sharpness similarity between the R6 and the R, despite the 10MP resolution difference. I have a 1DX3 and 1DX2, and the 1DX3 is MUCH sharper because of the new low-pass filter tech. Having said that, I heard somebody from Canon (can't remember who) say that the low-pass filter on the R6 isn't exactly the same as on the 1DX3, but I'd bet that it's a quantum improvement over the R.
@paulmorris4759

@@n0f4ke74 The X2 didn't leave a lot of room for improvement, but the X3 definitely takes the AF with the OVF up a notch. The face tracking is better and I trust all the focus points, so it's easier to frame tighter and have more pixels on target. The smart controller is also helpful. If you switch to live view, the AF is even better, especially because of the wider coverage and eye-AF. However, if you're going to use live view, you might as well go mirrorless with the R6 or R5.
@paulmorris4759
@paulmorris4759 4 жыл бұрын
@@n0f4ke74 Live view AF is always better than AF with the OVF because it gathers the data directly from the imaging sensor instead of a separate AF sensor that has to be calibrated with the imaging sensor via autofocus microadjustment (AFMA). The coverage is also much greater, so never any need to focus and recompose.

I guess the resolution point is a harder point for me to take because I come from the standpoint of a fashion and beauty photographer and retoucher. From a retouching standpoint, more resolution does a hell of a lot for me in allowing me to better target things that need to be removed/edited/etc and mess with less of the image overall. For studio environments with strobes especially (which is my primary workspace), differences in resolution can be rather pronounced in my experience just on the strength of the details I can capture with a higher resolution sensor.

Wow! Thank you very much! I just sold my EOSR and preordered EOSR6. At this moment, I haven’t received my R6. And now I am really anxious about my decision of switching from R to R6. Firstly, it is the overheating issue, which everyone is talking about. Secondly, I am a photo guy and I am always concerned about the low resolution of R6. Spending more money on a low resolution camera is really risky for me. But when I see your video, I finally get a clear idea about R6 and its capabilities. I chose the picture of camera2 and indeed I think the picture resolution is better. Happily, I camera1 is the R. Thanks to your video, I think I made the right decision to buy R6. (。・ω・。)ノ

Just want to state that you are incorrect about how the RAW mode is at a disadvantage because it uses regular c-log. You are mixing a few things together and I just wanted to shed some light on it. RAW is just that, RAW data from the sensor. It actually should not even be looked at as "video", because it is NOT video. It becomes video once it is compiled in your NLE, but before that it is pure data from your sensor, often in the form of raw images. You don't gain anything special from shooting RAW while using c-log 1, 2, 3, etc because c-log is a tone curve for video and meant for rec 709 video modes, like 4k all-i/ipb etc on the R6. So, you will see advantages in C-log 2, 3, etc. for video modes, which are the non raw modes. But when you are using RAW 8k video, you are in fact getting the highest quality from the sensor, there is nothing further that will make it "magically" better, such as c-log, etc. It is simply RAW data from the sensor in its purest form, simple as the that - you will get the highest dynamic range, etc. from the sensor when shooting RAW always.
@stalman
@stalman 4 жыл бұрын
I know what you’re saying, but Canon still regulates which tone curves you’re able to use when interpreting the raw data. So I suspect that there is enough information being captured to generate a beautiful clog3 image, but Canon would need to make it available for the R5 raw files in order to take advantage of that dynamic range potential. I also bet these sensors could handle clog3 in 10-bit modes but that’s just a guess

Hey, the A7III overheats at 4K (basic 4K as it doesn't have anything over cropped 30 fps) and that was kept secret for all these years. I have noticed that most people that are using the R5 and R6 right now that are experiencing overheating issues don't use the battery grip. I go back and forth with my EOS R with and without the grip. Does anyone think that using the grip might alleviate some of the overheating since the battery area would be somewhat hollowed out and there would be more surface area to dissipate the heat?

Problem of it all is, that it is NOT a camera for real professionals who shoot video. Period. Unfortunately. Same goes for the R5. You should always be in control of the cam, not the other way around. It’s not like you tell your clients that this location is too hot or that day is too sunny. We have to have tools which just do what they supposed to do. And you control it at the way. And as Cinema5D mentioned, it is a fun camera, great numbers, big marketing from Canon, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to hard facts. And therefor, we got to wait until tomorrow. I guess we then get an almost pro-level, small body, awesome IQ camera, which is almost perfect for a lot of pros.

I like more pixels because it gives me leeway to crop. The more I have, the more I can crop. Doesn't mean I always crop but I usually do to some degree. Are you saying in this video that less pixels does not limit this? That 20 is equal to 30? That printing from 20 is the same as 30? Isn't 30 better than 20 from a purely image quality standpoint but we accept the lesser amount as a trade-off for low light benefits? Would we all have not been happier if it were the 30 MP sensor with all the same attributes? I shoot only stills. You did an amazing job at telling us what R6 is capable of interms of Video. This shot at 0:48, gives me a hope of what this camera can do. Can you give us raw clip so we can grade and see whats it like. Canon's official video which was shot very poorly, upload on HD. Canon should hire you next time to do their official video. Sony's official videos are always to the extreme limits, they really know how to sell their cameras, or maybe Canon has forgotten.

You mention the 120fps being softer on the R6. The 120fps with DPAF was the main reason I wanted the R6. Was disappointed in the 90D's 120 because it was too soft. Carp. Might have to go with the R5 now.

Got mine recently and been playing with it. My verdict: Amazing photo camera, that has very good 1080p (with the 10bit and 422 and all). But I wouldn't consider it a real 4K camera though due to overheating issues. If you go into it with that perspective, you won't be disappointed. I'm just not sure that we should have to pay this kind of money NOT to get useable 4K in the year 2020. But if photo is your main thing, this camera is suberb!

Before you buy, i purchased this camera 2 weeks ago. nothing but problems from the start.. So i do video and that what i got it for.. So right off the top i setup the menu's get it all ready, hook my Ninja V, then turn on the camera then go to the menu's and the Menus system gets displayed on the Ninja not the camera, so you can't use the touch screen to navigate though you menu's because the menu's are only on the Ninja, (Nice huh) LOL next thing i notice when you turn on your Ninja the Level indicator disappears, i'm like WTF, all the other stuff is there except the Level Indicator.. then i record some footage in Clog 3 Cinema Gamut , then once i take that footage in the editor, and apply the general LUT that canon provided, the shadows in the skin tone's turn a puke Green. so i found out you can't use Cinema Gamut with an external recorder, ok so i record footage in Clog 3 bt709, then in the editor again i apply my LUT, and right away the color scale is way off, skin tones cast a greenish yellow in the shadows, almost impossible to get rid of.. then I also notice a ton of noise in the footage as well, and my exposure was set 1 stop above exposure. I'm like wow this is a crappy camera.. then i notice the image is sort of soft and crappy.. The wort camera i have every filmed on.. So being that said there is other problems with it.. If you record video using internal settings canon uses this crappy Coded so when you take it in the editor it lags it's not even really playable.. Now before this camea i was using the Fuji X-T3 and the quality of the video was better then the R6, i mean The Fuji X-T3 is a APSC sensor and the Canon R6 is full sensor and the fuji is better quality, that is SAD.. So just to let you all know before you go spend $3,500.00 on a camera you should know this camera is terrible shooting Video, the worst..

Great video Tyler & I completely agree with your opinion, for the most people out there this will be a great camera. I have pre ordered the canon R6 & it will be perfect for my event work. I believe that it's a good balance of high iso performance & file size. For me canon has the best ergonomics, the camera just feels right in my hands, I used to shoot weddings with the 6d / 5dmk4 & they were great. I now specialise in car photography & currently own the 5dmk4 & 5dsr ..... love the resolution in the 5dsr for car photography, especially as I sell very large prints & the files out of that camera look amazing when you print big. The canon R6 will be my go too event & travel camera, these are great tools to have & having the option to pick the right one for the job your doing is the way to go!

I really want a better sense of how large of prints you could do with the R6. I know it's not black and white, but I want some practical insight. I am also very curious about the difference in dynamic range between R5 and R6. Those would be the biggest factors for me to decide if the R5 is worth the extra money for my use.

How long can you record 4k video on a EOS R before it overheats? 4k overheating IS a big deal. People go gaga over specs, but when it comes to real world video you need a camera with a cooling fan (I.E. a real video camera) if you plan to do long sessions of 4k video - something to really consider.

"they are both JPEGS not RAW files" ... right the comparison falls apart. The cameras have different image processors. Digi X on the R6... Digi 8 on the R. I think there might be different results if you repeat this with RAW processing. Either way even 20 mpixel is enough for very large prints.

At the time of recording there was no way to process the raw R6 files. Either way, if the difference is so hard to perceive I’m not sure the jpg processing is all that significant of a variable

Thanks for this informative video! How is the battery life on the R6? I have a severe case of FOROOB (fear of running out of battery) so I always make sure I have enough power: Powerbase Edge Core for the BMPCC4K, battery grips for the M50 and Fuji X-T4. But the Canon battery grip for the R6 is crazy expensive and only adds one extra battery, as opposed to the two extra batteries on for instance the X-T4 which then has 3 in total. Point of the story is: I pre-ordered the R6 and now I want to add some juice for run ‘n gun shooting, but I’m questioning whether to get the battery grip or the powerbase. Powerbase adds more power at a lower cost, but the battery grip is a more elegant solution. Anyway, how did you experience battery life?

For stills is this is mos def a good buy. For video I still have questions. For IPB vs ALL-I, is there a difference in how easy it is to edit the footage? Especially in something like 4k60 10-bit? The overheating to me is quite a bit of issue because there still seems to be so many unknowns of when it actually will pop up. And that’s even with the documents Canon has supplied on that because the camera can continue to get hot even when not shooting video or even just shooting photos. Thanks again sharing your experience on the camera. Looking forward to more!

Don't get caught up in specs... 10 bit and ALL I won't matter if KZbin is your final viewing source (as it is for 99% of people). KZbin uses 8 bit, IPB compression. You can shoot in 16 bit raw, but when you upload to KZbin, those glorious videos will STILL have 8 bit banding. It's all marketing hype (except for people who output for pro use to be viewed somewhere like movies or television though I suspect a lot of TV stuff is also 8 bit IPB). Additionally, when you output your files from Resolve, Final Cut, etc, if you use MP4 that is only 8 bit output in most cases.

If the price difference was "only" $1000 or 40% more as indicated in the video, I'd be all over the R5. I don't need the 45mp just like no one needs a 911 Turbo S either but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be fun to own. However, according to B&H in the USA the difference is $1500 or 56% more and in Europe it's 1750€ or 66% more than the R6. What gives? I suppose it makes the decision easier but Canon's pricing policy or rather gouging policy leaves a lot to be desired.

Great video man! As someone who has used the R5 and R6 I’ll take the R5 just because the R6 overheats very fast and it becomes unusable and you’re forced to shoot in 1080P. In my testing the R5 in All-I never once over heated even in very extreme conditions.

you can't say that raw is less dynamic range than any of the c-log profiles - by it's very definition raw is the information that the sensor is capturing before most of the image processing is applied - this means that all of the c-log images can only ever at best be as much information as the raw file, they can never be more.
@stalman

It’s not either/or. Raw needs to be interpreted into a tone curve before you start editing it and currently Canon is disallowing the widest log curves

Appreciate you sharing about the overheating. I was hoping that the R6 would not have the same issue as the R5. I really like the colors over what I've seen in A7s III footage, though I am willing to grade to avoid getting a camera that overheats. Very disappointing. Why would they release a camera in that condition? Clearly Canon knew it would not be a good look for their reputation. Sony will continue to dominate.
