Traded my R for the R6 at Henry’s Canada in September. I cannot stress enough how amazing this camera is. Zero issues with resolution. Everything canon promised is here and works really well. The AF alone is worth the investment. If anybody is on the fence here don’t be. The R6 delivers.

i tested the rf 24-105 f4 with the r6 and i managed 3.2 second exposure handheld (not 100% sharp but usable actually) at a success rate of 30%. and about 50% on 2 second exposure. the test was done at 105mm at f4 it really depends if i actually ended up shaking alot or not and its really hard to do but i managed to do it! i'd have to prove it maybe to make these types of claims. i am a small person and somewhat (im 5'4/163cm tall) my body shake doesn't affect the camera as much and generally i'm very stable actually. sidenote: this system gives a decent confidence level but it is not fool proof of course. shooting anything under 1/20th requires high levels of concertation in stabilizing my body so its not particularly easy to take advantage of the ibis completely but its there if i needed to use it. its just crazy how far i can push it once i am stable enough!

Great review as always! Thank you! Got mine delivered on the same day you published this review. It is a pity that Canon give almost no promotions on R6 and RF lenses this holiday season. I could pick up an A7RIV for 2473 dollars from B&H with edu advantage. And each GM lens is 3-400 dollars off for me. Instead I got a R6 paying 26 dollars more. Switching cost and familiarity to EOS system prevent me from getting a better deal. So far my R6 works great with EF 24-70 II and it adds 3-4 stops IS on my lens. I love my R6, but not satisfied with the deal. Looking forward to your 100-500 review. I am considering add that lens to my collection.

Thanks for your review. Very detailed and on point like always! I own the EOS R since it came out and I was a long time unsure if the R6 will give me much more but after having it for almost two month I have to say it was a good decision to buy the R6. Your review is more or less what I found using it. The biggest point I had was the 30 vs 20 MPixel thing but when looking at pictures taken with the same lens same ... I can't see I am losing any information having only 20 MPixel. Of cause using test charts you can find something but in practical use not really. As you said if you need to crop a lot the R5 is the better but the much more expensive way. The main points which impressed me the most: AF, IBIS I can get ok pictures at 2 sec with the RF 35 or EF 50 F1.4 hand held, much better 4k video quality, better ISO performance both in video and photo. What I don't like is the tendency for moire especially in 1080p. The EOS R is much better here. 4k video is almost free of moire. Sometimes I find the pictures too sharp when using LR's 40 standard setting but this personal preference.

You covered all the important points and offered a very balanced and useful perspective. I have been planning to get the R6 for a few months but have not placed an order mainly because the RF to EF adapter with control ring continues to be on back order. Since I have a many EF lenses, I need the adapter to make use of them; otherwise the R6 will be a useless brick. I am not prepared to sink a lot of money on a bunch of new RF lenses just yet, although, from what I read, many are excellent lenses. All the best to you. Thanks for making these videos. ~Earl

Thanks for the very informative review! I'd just like to point out that, in your high iso comparisons starting from 25:30 (iso 51200) the shadows are brighter likely because of the higher exposure: you shot ISO 25600 ISO at 1/6400s and both ISO 51200 and 102400 at 1/8000s. Given the nature of the sensor, I guess it's safe to say that you would then underexpose (in post) the last two shots and you'd obtain basically the same as ISO 25600?

There's often a practical limit to testing ISO because of the shutter limitations. That's true, and it requires a minor bit of compensation.

Firstly, thanks for all your reviews, of which I have watched many. Re the R6, I love it. I am still not totally in control but that is one advantage to changing systems (in this case to mirrorless) ... you have to stop and think about things you haven't thought about for a while. I have two RF lenses and they are great, but my set of EF lenses is performing better in general. The one area which has me stumped though is video. I came from a Canon 5D MkIV and from time to time did the odd simple video without the need for editing which I could output to a simple file , view it on my own media player and pass it on if that is what I wanted. Not so with the R6. I have even asked Canon what to do about the problem and they gave me half an answer and avoided the difficult bit. They suggested viewing through DPP4 which I have done and I can view it in their player, but outputing it from there to produce files to view on another player or share.... no way. I am not realy interested in editing as I am a photographer and the videos I want are simple... not enough to warrant paying for expensive editing programs and spending a lot of time learning how to edit. So for now, I have a fabulous camera that I can only half use which is more than a little dissapointing. If you, or anyone else viewing could offer suggestions I would be extremely grateful. BTW... I am running Windows 10.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
There's no reason why shooting MP4 videos shouldn't play natively in Windows 10. They certainly do for me. I'm a little confused by the issue you are encountering.
@tom_something3 жыл бұрын
I'm eagerly awaiting the delivery of my R6. I agree that the main downside to a lower overall resolution for still shots compared to some other models is the ability to shoot wide and then crop without losing a lot of fidelity. Of course, in landscapes, it's just a matter of shooting lots and lots of tight shots so you have options on composition and don't have to rely on cropping. While if you're tracking something that's moving quickly, the IBIS and the renowned AF performance mean you can "compose in camera" and shoot something similar to what you want your final to look like. I'm using mine mostly for in-house stills and scripted clips for my company. I've got a 60D and a lot of good EF glass. For me it makes sense to stay under the Canon umbrella. I wanted full-frame 4K and a little better than 8 bit video, so the EOS-R was out on both counts. And I just couldn't justify getting an R5 for the price, when I already need to get an EF adapter and really fast storage*. The overheating doesn't concern me for my purposes because it seems to involve higher frame rates and much longer shots than I typically need to do. I am still hoping it's a firmware thing, but considering how many crucial adjustments and enhancements Canon has made in their R6 firmware updates since the camera's release... it seems like it would have been enough of a priority that they would have fixed it already, if it could be fixed just by a firmware update. *My 60D was never really satisfied shooting even 1080p 24fps on any of the SD cards I gave it. It would sporadically encounter a buffer overrun between 10-180 seconds into shooting, and automatically stop. For self shots, I had to keep my eye on the red LED to see if I was still being recorded. Sometimes I wouldn't notice and would just keep yapping for another two minutes, only to realize none of it was captured. I'm not doing that again, so I'm buying good, expensive storage.

Hi Dustin. I've read some R6 users complaining that the EVF lags in low light, as in the refresh rate drops significantly when panning around. Great detailed review, thanks! What surprises me, is that barely any reviewer talks about the system itself - including the lenses. The R6 seems like an amazing camera to me but what holds me back of buying one ist the fact, that the Canon RF lenses are HUGE and very expensive! The Nikon Z lenses for example, are generally a lot more affordable and deliver excellent results. It's not realistic for me to buy only f 1.2 lenses and neither am I a hardcore sports photographer... just my opinion right now. cheers from Switzerland

The review hits the nail on the head. The AF as well as the HighIso performance of the camera is fantastic, as I can already say after two weeks of use. Compared to my very good 20MP Lumix G9, which I appreciated very much at that time, the possibilities of the R6, e.g. in indoor sports are clearly extended. But also compared to a Fuji XT-3, which I used without hesitation up to ISO 3200, you win here. In addition, the camera is surprisingly light and compact for an FF model. Whether the 20MP is a big disadvantage compared to 24-26MP models is something you have to judge for yourself. The crop reserve is a little bit lower. At the end I think the camera is to expensive.

I think being too expensive is the only serious indictment against this camera. Probably a $2299 price point would have been about right.

Years ago, this would have been a dream at 2500. It’s a baby 1DX3 for half the price. It’s only the competition is what makes the price point high. I was with Sony for years and after having the R6, I’m not returning to Sony. I’m surprised Canon gave us a great sensor and fast focus system.

As usual Dustin, an intricate and painstakingly detailed review. Have been a Canon 6D and L glass shooter for some years. Yes, the 5 & 6 have some appeal, however, tbh, the 6D system and quality glass does all I need + entry price is a significant deterrent. To compound affordability, the new native Canon L series glass for these bodies would have me looking straight at the excellent offerings from both Sigma and Tamron- the Tamron current 70-200 VR is no longer the poor cousin of the past. With the drastically shrinking camera ( as opposed to mobile phone camera ever encroaching push) I wonder if Canon are pricing these products out of mainstream affordability. Thanks for the typically thorough analysis. Trust you and your family have a great Christmas and you are able to find some suitable subjects in heavy snow time.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
It's unquestionably a major issue that the new RF lenses are (for the most part) very expensive. Thus far Canon has not been open to Sigma and Tamron development on the RF mount, and that (to me) gives an advantage to Sony where there are many, many options at most focal lengths at a variety of price points
@robertcudlipp34264 жыл бұрын
However, it would appear that Canon "opened up " sufficiently with the non mirrorless body range to allow Sigma and Tamron to manufacture a wide variety of quality glass. Seems curious that Canon seemingly have felt averse to repeating the assistance with the mirrorless bodies. Strange. It has been said that Fuji, certainly for the X range of bodies, has and continues to travel on the same non IP sharing path Canon have ( disregarding their RF customer base) , therefore no Sigma or Tamron glass for X body owners. However, Fuji native X series glass, generally excellent quality and good value for money.

Your reviews are the best I've seen, and so, I have come to trust your opinion above others'. I switched to a Fuji XT-3 from a Canon 5D Mk III 2 years ago because the Fuji is smaller and more travel friendly, and its analog dials reproduce what I was used to growing up with a Nikon Photomic FTn. The little buttons of the Canon were a disconnect with me, so much so, that most of the time I just left the camera on A+ and shot it as an enormous point and shoot. What frustrates me about the Fuji, however, is its primitive autofocus system which is hit or miss with me. More than 50% of the images of people have fuzzy eyes, as opposed to 90% of my old Canon images having razor sharp eyes, even without today's eye autofocus. So I am contemplating switching back to Canon, as much as it pains me. I don't really have R5 money, though, and am contemplating the R6 with the 24-105 Rf lens. I primarily use my camera for travel photography with my family, and I would like to make gallery quality prints for display on my walls -- 16X20" or, at most, 20X24". What is your advice? Would I have more successful results with the R6? Is the image quality for the size prints I intend to make better with the Canon's full frame 20mp sensor than the Fuji's 26mp crop sensor? Should I stick to the Fuji and try to figure out how to take more successfully sharp images with it? I would appreciate your guidance!

The R6 would be high on my list as a hybrid shooter except for two important things (1) it has no video backup and (2) it switches from photo to video a bit clumsily. If you watch Taylor Jackson's review he points out its a excellent camera but the lack of video/photo switch like on the nikons slows the process down.

if you plan on cropping a bit and then printing keep in mind your largest print will be around 18x12. This gives your 900 pixel width and 600 pixel height crop from the original size. I think my 6D from 5 years ago had the same limitation. Really Canon 20mpix. I bought the R6 but starting to realize that I need something with more resolution for BIF and landscape. 20Mpix for my needs is a little weak and the R5 is out of my budget. The R is just too slow and the 5Dmk4 is not out because I started swapping my EF lenses to RF. I'm in a bind now. I should have just kept my R for landscape and casual photos and go with a used 7Dmk2 or 5Dmk4 for strictly BIF with my 100-400Mk2 and 1.4 Ext Mk3.

Between that fact and your comments, sounds like this is going to be a contender. I'm an airshow and aviation shooter and EVF lag has been the primary factor keeping me away from Mirrorless. A 350-400mph stunt plane (or vintage WWII wardbird) w/ a prop spinning 2000 RPMs can be a distracting target when the EVF and prop rotation are not sync'd. It's the camera we all wished the EOS R had been, I guess. If this had come to market in 2018, I would still be a Canon shooter, adapting my existing EF lenses. But today? At least in Germany you can get the Sony A7 III about ONE GRAND cheaper than the R6 and you can build a good and affordable Sony kit with third-party lenses, which the Canon system is still missing. Tough sell for me. Still, this would have been my favorite camera to move on from the 5D Mark III.

@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you for the reply. I am using the 135mm f/2, adapted. I know it’s technically not an action lens, but in the past I have used it for indoor sports and soccer games under poor lighting and it’s always focused fast and accurate (those times it was on a 6D and always at f/2). It almost seems like it’s just not tracking as well on the R6. I will try to test the 35mm 1.4II later and see how that is.
@Training_With_Pepper3 жыл бұрын
I think I figured it out. I believe it's the drive mode. For whatever reason, with the 135mm I can't have the flicker reduction enabled or I get like 3fps. The electronic shutter has to be enabled, too. On the 35mm 1.4II, I can have the flicker reduction enabled and shoot 20fps (or whatever it is) with the mechanical shutter. It's really odd. I found in the manual that flicker reduction has to be disabled in order to get 20fps, but with the 35mm it works either way. I find that as a bummer. If I ever wanted to use the 135mm for soccer again, the field is (poorly) lit with fluorescent lights, so I wouldn't be able to use it because of the flicker. I hope they fix this with a firmware update. Anyway, thank you for your response, brother!

Hello Dustin. Can you tell if the R6 is overall better than the A9 (mk1) that you reviewed last November? Is it better in AF, accuracy, hit rate, editing latitude, colors, AF speed, Eye tracking accuracy, distance eye tracking accuracy -compared to A9. What do you suggest? Can rolling shutter be an issue for shooting sports? The price of used A9 is same as new R6. Let me know what is your opinion on these aspects? Was a posterization issue fixed in A9? And, does this R6 makes 1dx II obsolete ?Thank you very much for your review.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
That's a lot of difficult questions. The R6 is very similar to the a9 in terms of tracking capabilities and buffer depths, so I would say the big advantage for the EOS R6 is that you get a much more robust mechanical shutter that will help with things like anti-flicker. The two sensors are more similar than different, I would say, though I give the edge to the R6 for ISO performance. The big advantage for the a9 these days is that there are far, far more native mount lenses available at wide variety of price points. As for a mirrorless camera making a DLSR obselete - I think the answer is no, because there are still those uninterested in mirrorless. It is still two different markets, though the R6 (to me) is more compelling.
