I took the Canon EOS R7 out into the Real World to Review it's Auto Focus. I went to a Philadelphia Phillies and Union game. I used the kit 18-150 RFs, Canon 70-200 2.8 RF and 400 2.8 RF. How did the Auto Focus hold up and is it as good as the R3, R5 and R6??? How's it feel in comparison to something like the Nikon Z9?

I mentioned SUB $2,000 camera in the video, when in fact, the body only is $1500. I was looking at the kit when I made the sub $2,000 statement. So this camera in fact is only $1,500 which is insane for what it offers.

I had a 7D mark II and if I hadn't already touched an R5, I would be in heaven with the R7. Just having autofocus, EVF, and rotating touch screen. Incredible camera for $1500. I think for anyone who has been holding onto a 7D mark II and wants to get into mirrorless (and can't afford the R5 or R6 or doesn't want full frame), will not be disappointed. Just keep in mind that for bird photography, beware shooting birds in flight in electronic shutter mode. It really warps the background and their wings.

@@Goodwishes67 oh, that's so exciting!! I bet you're as floored with the autofocus as I was. So many more keeper images. The rolling shutter issue has proven to be overblown. Most of the birding forums see it, but it's not bad as people are saying. It happens, it's rare. If you're still not convinced, you can just use mechanical shutter and not have to ever worry. I have yet to experience it, or at least, notice it.

Just rented and shot with the R7. This is one I will be buying. The buffer fills quickly but it is manageable. I used the RF 100-500mm with it and that gave me a lot of reach on the long end acting like a 800mm f11. No problems with run and gun wildlife shooting and even with the smaller equivalent aperture I could still get decent subject separation. Found minimal difference in weight and similar size to the R5 (no grip). Took me a minute to figure out the controls and set up back-button focus but very usable. Body only for $1500 makes it a deal and a great second camera body.

Received my R7 June 24, body only and not having a battery grip like my 7DMk2 doesn't even bother me. The auto focus system and how efficient it can communicate and transfer photos to my smart phone is something that I very happy with and my capture rate is much higher shooting birds in flight. I paired with the RF800 f/11 and the reach is insane.

I picked up an R7 a couple months ago and after two weddings, a running track shoot, and a few model sessions I can say that I love shooting with it. I’d love to see how this camera pairs with canon’s sharpest prime glass given that it’s resolving north of 80mp on a full frame basis. Thinking of making a 1.2 purchase to bring out the full potential of the sensor.

For Lightroom users worried about the sharpness from the results of these r7 photos, here is something to note. I'm a pixel peeping monster, editing over 20k photos over past few years..so I do a ton of comparisons between the six or so canon bodies that I have. Those that are very very very familiar with Lightroom would have noticed that the sharpness default amount was tuned up or maybe around Lightroom 6, but definitely for cc/classic. The old standard was 25, the new standard is 40. The issue is that having your default sharpness this high definitely makes pictures look a lot better especially on newer monitors like apples laptops etc. At the same time, it also increases the noise visibility, especially in clear skies and shadows. For the purpose of accurate focus comparisons between new camera files and older files - when I adopted LR classic to replace my version 5.4, I made a custom import preset that only reverts the sharpness back to the old 25. With that sharpness level now being even between my newer Canon files and my older ones, I can do a more accurate review in terms of the image quality. If this doesn't sound like it makes a big deal to you, that's fine. But again the higher that sharpness setting is, the more noise you're going to see. The r7 uses the same overburdened sensor as the 32 MP sensor in a m62. The pixel smearing will reduce your overall sharpness (google it). That said, the higher default sharpness for Lightroom will cover up for it but your shadows and skies are going to look way worse. Again those very familiar with Lightroom will understand exactly what I'm talking about. Others who never paid attention and just defaulted to whatever Lightroom does this is probably not useful info for you. The main reason I bring this up is because I downloaded Jared's first round of test images and they were terrible in terms of sharpness and focus accuracy. I was super disappointed to see no change in image quality at all for 22 2022 Canon crop. (colors are worse also). They are using the old sensor Tech and so even with great glass, the pictures are going to look the same as older Canon crop cameras. Just like you guys I have been looking to upgrade from my M bodies, and once again Canon does half steps leaving me as a frustrated customer who really wants to upgrade his gear but sees no real progress in image quality. Hopefully this information is useful to you. Cheers.

@@xmj6830 yeah I dissected those first raws that he gave us a link to and they were overall pretty bad. At least in terms of focus, it was soft soft everywhere except for one or two frames. But as I mentioned I don't think it's necessarily the focus I think it's the effect of the pixel smearing at least for the r7 files. The r10 files I would expect to look as sharp and normal as any other Canon crop since it shouldn't have that pixel smearing density issue. Another thing is I've noticed that the color has really suffered on the recent m series. I have all the files to compare for myself as I have a m1, a M50 and m62. Some sleuths in one of the photo forums actually figured out that the color responses different in the latest Canon crops also that's why the colors aren't as great.

I think it’s a big compliment to the R7 that people even bother to make the comparison to the R5 and R6, then factor in that it’s pretty comparable in many areas and with faster frame rates I think that the R7 is a superb camera and for the price it’s punching well above its weight. Unfortunately canon is blocking 3rd party glass. Your best bet is adapting EF glass which works perfectly well, with the caveat they will be FF lenses. For landscapes though, my trusty 10-22 EFS has done wonders for me since the 7d days and could also work great now. 50 is too long for crop, and 35 is weird imho. There is no equivalent to the awesome 22/f2. Oddly enough, EFM has more critical lens lengths then RFS. Even the kit lens is better than the RFS downgraded trash. Happy shooting

A number of users are now reporting AF pulsing with the Sigma 150-600 C and Canon's EF/RF adaptor on the R7 and other R bodies e.g. see Duade Paton's excellent series. Others (e.g. Gordon Drake from DPReview) have reported similar problems with older Canon EF lenses on the R7, which may only manifest when using eye tracking AF. I loved my Sigma 150-600C and Tamron 100-400 VC Di for birding. But because I wanted to take full advantage of bird eye tracking, I ultimately upgraded to the Canon RF 100-500. While pricey, it's worth it if you can swing it.

@@wellingtoncrescent2480 Duade was able to stop most of the pulsing thanks to Simon. So at least there is a fix for the issue. @@honeybadger1656 Thanks. I saw Duade's fix. Though improved, I still found the pulsing annoying, which prompted me to trade in my Sigma 150-600 C and Tamron 100-400 VC Di (my "birding" lenses) for the RF 100-500. In the lead-up to Black Friday, I also benefited from a 20% off sale from a national retailer here in Canada, which brought the price of RF 100-500 down to more manageable levels. Despite some resentment at being "forced" to upgrade, I see definite advantages. Compared to third-party EF lenses, the dual response motors are more responsive; the lens IS is better co-ordinated with the R7 IBIS, which matters for video; and the image quality is just breathtaking. Having long extolled the virtues of the Sigma, I think the upgrade is worth it, if you can manage it. I was lucky, in that my wife decided it would be easier to only lug around one birding lens :)

I have "tested" the limits so I have attempted shots I would normally not even try. Some work, some don't, but that is how you figure out what the camera will do. That was great to see your EVF during the shoots. It makes me wonder if the new canons are that much better than my R, or if I have something set up wrong or there is something wrong with my R. When I am shooting 5fps with back button focus, once I’ve got shots in the buffer (not full), if I stop shooting to move the focus point I loose the EVF and basically the camera until the buffer is completely empty a few seconds later. Is this normal for the R? Instead of recomposing to see the reaction at the end of a race, I have to continue shooting straight through those extra seconds and hope my focus point hasn’t jumped to another athlete before the finish, otherwise I miss the finish completely. Love what I’m seeing, definitely plan to add the R7 to my gear, awesome review.

But the ISO situation I never shot over 800 ISO because the images would look horrible (in my opinion) tons of distortion that'd be visible even being printed out. I do alot with car photography and nature/wildlife photography. So constant variation in lighting with interior photos or photos taken where there is a lot of shade and bright sunshine mix and the camera being able to keep the image pretty crisp is another awesome upgrade. Also haven't made up my mind on lens yet if I go with the rf 15-35 f2.8 or the rf 24-70 f2.8 as some of the areas I shoot with cars like at events get pretty tight at times. My go to for the t7 is an EF 17-55. So having the added reach is nice. But not having to stand 20 feet from the car for a full subject image would be nice too. Any suggestions?

I will use it with my existing RF 100-500 and some 1.8 lens. What I want is the fps and AF speed with the ibis. It was a great packages in just 1.5k. Thanks Jared, beautiful review. I have a R6 with some EF L-Glass from 16 to 400mm. I sold all my old gear (non L-Glass and DSLR's) to buy the R6 and am quite happy with it. In the end, 20 Mpx are somewhat restricting and I consider to obtain more Pixels. A used 5Ds would be nice but outdated. The R7 looks promising. I feel your pain. For nearly $3,000 us, the body only has 20 megapixels. Cmon. I've been using 18 and 20 megapixel canons for so many years, that is not an upgrade at all. My m62 has 32 megapixels even though the resolution honestly isn't any better I almost always buy the one level below the top camera because the one at the top is usually beyond expensive. But with the r6? Only if my 5d3 fell off a cliff or something. Even the 5d3 has 22. When Canon cuts corners they do it in the absolute worst way possible. Them and apple should be really good friends.

@@DamoMatthewsPhotography glad you're enjoying the camera. Honestly I could get one, but since I shoot mostly landscape, the bigger file sizes allowing for more detail was the main goal and the flippy screen of course LOL. And to be honest it's nearly $3,000. That's how much my work critical MacBook cost so it just wasn't an option. To your point, the pixels are bigger on the R6 and that's why the image quality is better is the simple way to put it. I have noticed that even on my M50 and m62 as compared to my old original M body, the colors and the image quality are not as good in my opinion. Tinier pixels come with sacrifices. This r5/6 IQ difference was actually noticed on DPreviews test charts as well. At the end of the day I'm not totally against the R6 as a body, but it has less MP than my 5d3 and it still bothers me for the cost. But you won't hear me out here saying it's a bad camera it's definitely not. If I was back in SG doing my landscapes I will in mind having one I'll tell you that.

until you realize the crop lenses for it are bad, and the sensor tech is a decade old. remember, the r7 has 32mp~ (6,900px wide) did you see 32mp worth of detail in there? nope..because of this thing called "pixel smearing", which happens on super high density sensors super tiny pixels light gathering bleeds into other pixels, so unless you are very, VERRRYY still, chances are the smearing makes images softer than they should be. + Canons AA filter, to make it even softer. Look back at jareds first sample pictures with the eyes..they were super blurry. my point is its more than just the AF..its the sensor and tech around it that will determine your actual image quality. Lenses cant correct for sensor limitations, and vice versa. Even with Ibis.

@@borocotochacha I've had these conversations with fellows on the DP review forums, and to be honest a lot of people literally just can't see it. I know there's not a lot of people like me, my background is in digital design so I'm used to dealing with pixels and images at 100% all the time. It actually makes it easier for me to judge image quality because everything's at 100 and has been for 20 years now LOL. I see every nook and cranny of these files and it's no lie, the combination of shutter slap and slight movement plus pixel smearing means that many people are using these cameras and outputting soft images and since they're looking at them at small sizes they have no idea. For my Instagram the last Mile on my output is exporting at either 9:16 or 4:5. But soft images always have a certain look at that size also. This thing some photographer is called normalizing for comparison sake, will not make backup sharpness for a soft image at least not compared to a naturally sharp image. Once I add some additional sharpness at his native smaller size, you will never know that the source file had issues. But that's the magic of editing it isn't it? However for me and those of us that understand, the source file is everything. Just because the image will ultimately get shown on Instagram doesn't mean that it won't be pulled out of the archives for a book a poster etc.

@WhistleBit not super sure understand the phone pixel thing. So many phones are using fake 100 megapixel cameras that at this point it's all just a bunch of marketing speak. Don't forget all of the processing that's tossed on top of it to make it look good. Don't get me wrong is that really deep depth of field can make for some really nice phone pictures. But then you take a raw file with it, put that in a raw editor.. and you really see what you're dealing with.. it's not pretty.

R7 and R10. Started with an AE-1, which was a mule! Drop it in mud, rain, hurricane, desert heat - it still works 40 year later! Finally moved to digital with a couple of EOS Rebels: much less than a year of life; forget "Rain", a drizzle or humidity abovwe 49.9999999% sent them to the great beyond. I then learned the new planned-obsolescence term "weather sealing" the hard way. It was hard to wrap my mind around the fact that a camera company would make a camera that I was supposed to know that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES could I ever take it out of the box or (gasp!!!) take it outside! Here is what I really want to knwo about the R-"crooked numbers" series. Did on drop of sweat fall uopn it? Did you take any pictures outside the Zero-Humidity of Death Valley? Was there a single water unbound molecule within a square mile? If so, did it immediately go wonky and have to be sent to the North Pole for repair?

I have to wonder if the only reason they didn't put a stacked sensor in this was just to protect the value of the R3. One of the main advantages of APS-C is the sensors are cheap to make, so making a stacked sensor R7 would cost a lot less than the R3 sensor. No doubt everyone would be a lot happier with the R7 if it were stacked sensor at $2,000 but then Canon would probably sell half as many R3s.

@@felipecourtois7883 Just for anyone else reading this that might be interested - I wanted to point out that the R7 is quite the upgrade over the 80D. The direct predecessor to the 80D is the 90D. Then that's it for the DSLR progression. The direct path from DSLR to mirrorless from the 90D is actually the R10. That's the mirrorless series that picks up where the XXD series left off. The R7 is actually a tier up from the R10. So, you basically skipped over an iteration of the line you were in (90D) and moved up a tier from the RXX series to the RX series. So, that's probably a pretty big jump. I'm on a 7D mk II, and the R7 is the direct jump into mirrorless for me. To expand a little The 80D you were on is in the same "tier" or "line" as the original in that line : the 10D. Then came the 20D, 30D, etc....all the way to your 80D. They released a 90D and then discontinued the DSLR line and continued that line in the mirrorless realm starting with the R10. Eventually there will be an R20, R30, etc... With the two-digit model numbers, they just increase the number with each iteration. In the single-digit models (like the 1D, 5D, 7D, and now R7), they just at a Mk # with each iteration. I'm on the 7D Mk II, and the direct upgrade to that is the R7. And eventually, I assume the next iteration will be the R7 Mk II. Canon has done mostly a good job with keeping the model numbers as consistent as possible. For the most part, the D-series DSLRs have an R-series mirrorless counterpart - so the "line" continues. These are the transitions for some of what has come out in the R series so far : 5D Mk IV >>> R5 6D Mk II >>> R6 (the R6 Mk II has come out as well) 7D Mk II >>> R7 90D >> R10 (they don't use Mk #s so they just restarted with 10, and will go R20, R30, etc. as new iterations come out) There is an R3, but it doesn't have a D-series counterpart. It's a new tier they are squeezing between the 1D and 5D. Eventually, there will be an R1 to fill out the roster, but it hasn't been released yet.

I do understand this is due to the crop sensor but it doesn't change the fact. Oh well, as Jared himself said - "if you take pictures of birds and sky is in focus - it is not really a problem" 😁

This is the same Af as on the R10, right? I'm interested in the R10 as my next camera but won't be ready for it until Christmas time. ;)

Hi, I have the canon r8, and I'm thinking of buying a second camera, would you recommend canon r6 mark 1 or r7?

great review, thank you very much! is it possible to know your opinion about the battery and the electronic shutter? In France, 99% of the reviews seem distorted because of the sponsorship of denoising software and the "pressure" of the brand. We have just learned that the R7 will officially not have Grip. I no longer understand Canon's policy with its overpriced small aperture lenses (for example: 100-500 @ F7.1Vs 100-400 II @ F5.6) and the loss of grip will make you lose the possibility of doubling the battery and the ergonomics of the case for regular users. A great pity: I will not buy this device despite its qualities. thank you very much, once again.

Surely the EF-M mount is dead now? Canon has made an awesome APS-C camera in the R7 using the RF mount and kicked off the RF-S lens lineup. Any reason why EF-M is still needed (other than in the transition phase)?
