I've had the RP for just about 3 months and I have to agree with your review. I got the 24-105 RF 4L with the RP instead of getting the R hoping Canon comes out with a higher end mirrorless. Using it in video mode at 1080 with the IS lens is great too. The 4k is fine if the camera is not moving very much but if you move around a bit, the rolling shutter effect is brutal. I got the camera I expected and Iove it. Thanks for your reviews Dustin! I watched many of your reviews to help me make my decision. Look forward to many more!! Take care!

I got a used 6D in early 2018 and was pretty satisfied (enthusiast here). Once I knew RP came out at such a low price, I immediately got the RP (sold the 6D later). I was impressed that there was a difference in photo quality (pictures are sharper). DPAF is amazing and overall the Grip of the camera is decent (or good for mirrorless). For a photos, I think RP is much more worth it than R (although I wish RP had the focus guide function & silent shutter other than auto/scene mode & and stupid dumbdown of no FULL HD (only 720p or 4K with no DPAF) when using EF-S lens!!!! (yes, you can adapt EF-S 10-18mm into RP using adaptor with 1.6x crop = 16mm)). If you are into videos, I say you should stay away from RP and get something else.

Been using the RP awhile now. Made it through 4 countries over the past year. I like it. I do NOT like how the screen swivels. I shoot landscapes mainly so preferred how the screen came in and out on the Sony A7iii. I love the focus of the camera, its great. Focus peaking is great. Images are good. VF is not amazing but fine. I dislike most the little sensor that turns off the back screen and sends it to VF. Its annoying. Highly. So much so I just started shooting 100% with the VF and screen closed on the back.

I really want to hear your opinion on this Dustin. RF 24-105 F4 vs Tamron 24-70 F2.8 G2 (use with adapter) for the same price. Which would you pick if you could only choose one? Consider IQ, IS (I do a bit of video as well), CA, color/3D rendering... For bokeh, is it really different from F4 -> F2.8? Currently I'm using this RP + Sigma 50mm F1.4, but it really feels not wide enough sometimes and I mostly shoot from F2.8 -> F6. Therefore, I want to get a lens that does it all for everyday shoot. Two questions I hope you can help answer! 1) Now that this is $999 (US), do you think it’s bang for the buck is pretty good or downright amazing? 2) If someone needed to shoot in an occasional super low light situation (at a home birth or outdoor at night for example), would you say this RP would definitely need a capable flash to assist/would it be possible to eliminate that discoloration effect with flash involved in low-light spaces?
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a lot of camera at that price point, and is a lot of fun to use. I would recommend going for a lens with a faster maximum aperture instead of going for a flash. You'll get more natural looking photos. The RF 50mm F1.2L is the big budget choice, but a lens like the RF 35mm F1.8 isn't a bad option, either.

And yep, Canon is not known for dynamic range, so one must be a little more careful to get it right --- shoot over and under when possible on important shots. Or use bracketing -- I assume it to have. Yes, I am 9 mo late in seeing this, but when I saw something about RP, I clicked on it. Canon is made in Japan and lens in Taiwan, which is good to see -- freedom countries and supporting homeland jobs for Japan -- way to go!

Hey Dustin , cool video as always. How is the video bit rate on the RP ? is it the same as on the R ( in 4k the R has almost 5 times more data then the Sony has, and in 1080p over 3 times more) ? actually I find the R to be the best 1080p hybrid video camera, if the RP is the same then it's a big plus. What about the RAW file sizes compared to the R? And how is the sensor stack on this compared to the R? as good in producing tonal details & deep color gradations? I find the R to be a great camera , if the RP is close then it's a damn fine option.

The RP unfortunately takes a step back on the video front, though it is still pretty good at 1080P. Read my text review for more analysis on all your questions.

As a landscape photographer who carries gear hiking, I have wanted a mirrorless camera with FF sensor with super sharp lenses that are not huge like the R series are. For the first time since 1998, I am actually considering moving to Nikon and selling my Canon gear. It makes no sense to me to have smaller lighter mirrorless bodies that are then paired to the largest lenses I have seen, such as those with the R mount lenses.

Shooting Canon for near 15 years. From a XT to pro FF bodies and lenses. I kept my Canon family and added a SONY A7iii... one year's use lead to the in-body image stabilizing sensor failing, rendering it useless until I sent it off to get fixed (all good now). I adapted EF lenses and just don't like the system and the results... the learning curve was obnoxious. I often fall back to my Canon rigs for critical work and still yet keep the A7iii around for sports. I bought a RP and like it way better than the A7iii with exceptions. Both focus fast and are responsive. They have some similarities as mirrorless cameras with great new features and the SONY is just flat out better for video... but I am a stills shooter. RP is better to handle physically... the grip is deeper and the touch screen and menu is better thought out than the SONY (gripped too). RP images are BETTER for my taste than the A7iii (the A7iii does win with low light high ISO though). SONY wins at frame rate, ability to switch to crop mode on the fly, silent shutter mode, High ISO performance, battery life, ports for the cards door/battery/and other hookups/USB charging. With the RP I have had issue with the HSS on 3rd party strobes (GODOX/FLASHPOINT) black banding from the shutter curtain and bright striping over 1/500s. I'm still trying to sort that out hoping a firmware update will fix all of that like it did the EOS R.

Fair enough. I've had no physical issues with my a7RIII after two years. But yes, different people prioritize different things.

Hi Dustin, really appreciate your honest and factual reviews. I have quite a few Canon lenses that I was using on my Canon 7D ii and I also have a Canon 50mm F1.2 L lens which was a slight telephoto on the 7D ii.. In order to use that lens I found I had to seriously adjust the back focussing adjustment on my 7D ii to get a decent hit rate. In the end, I decided to get the EOS RP. I am not bothered about video, being a stills photographer, and I have to tell you the autofocussing on the RP is absolutely spot on with my 50mm F1.2 L. The rendering of this lens on the RP is so nice, it was always not quite there on the 7D ii. I was thinking of getting a 5D iv but didn't want the weight so I made the choice for the EOS RP and I couldn't be happier with the results. There is only one thing that I don't like about it, and that is the position of the AF-ON button. It's too far to the right and I can't get used to it because of the smallness of the body making my thumb always being in the wrong place. I might buy the grip to improve things. As for the sensor noise issue, because I was a m4/3 shooter I always try and expose to the right so if there is noise from the sensor I haven't noticed any, it's far less than M4/3. Thanks for the review, I am so happy with the results from the EOS RP.

I have so enjoyed your unbiased, unspun reviews, thanks! As one who just returned his RP due to the sensor, would you mind doing a true A/B test between the A7III and the EOS R? I've watched all your videos on these and what I'm really trying to determine is a blend between ecosystems and ease of use with technical prowess. Cost is a factor and the availability of inexpensive used EF Canon lenses is as compelling as is the variable screen and IBIS. So specific questions (If you have the time... or anyone else). 1. Is there a viable vlogging work around for the flip screen with the Sony (such as Canon's CanaonConnect App)? 2. Is the A7III EVF on par with the RP? (The RP was good enough for me). 3. How much effort does Sony post require with the difference in color? I actually prefer cooler, higher contrast, saturated finals. 4. How easy is it to alter OOC Jpegs in Sony like Canon's profile settings (Standard, Landscape, etc.). Thanks for the help!

Great honest review! Every other reviewer sugar coats the review of this camera. I had this camera for a couple weeks and hated the sensor. Way too noisy at 100iso if you bump the shadows just a tad. I know for the price you get a weak focus system and poor video which I can deal with, but a poor sensor in 2019 is just poor on their part. It’s a shame that Canon still has poor sensors, because their new RF lenses are amazing! I sold off all my Canon gear and went with a Sony A7III. What an amazing camera that is for the money. I no longer need to bracket shots. Files are so clean, shoots fast, and video is great. Love the clean and clear colors of the new Sony files. They finally got the colors right.
